I remember when I first saw this song live. I've been to dozens of concerts and this song was by far the greatest concert experience I've ever had. Getting chills just watching this video. Bon Iver is a huge inspiration for me and my music
Happy to have a good multi-cam performance of this favorite Bon Iver track with the bulk of it's original arrangement, let alone the Austin City Limits performance! It's what's missed in the lineup nowadays, this 9-piece multi-instrumental lineup is just captivating. Just wish Rob wasn't the only string player in this and that CJ had some more trumpet players backing him up while playing that French Horn part. There's a video interview where he (CJ) talks about how difficult it was to play those melody parts together at the start of each show during the tour, it's fascinating stuff!

Just for those that don’t know the back story of this song, he wrote this piece the day he learned of his friends sudden death. Seems like each live performance of this song you can see in his face the pain of the tragedy revisit him. This friend of his was from Australia, thus the name Perth, and this friend and him supported each other throughout the infancy of their separate careers years ago. That friend was Heath Ledger.
Close, bon iver had a friend (from Australia) and in the three days they were meant to be doing music video stuff, Heath Ledger (who was Justin's music-video-friend's best friend) died, leading to a lot of high emotions.
