People generally don't realize that Rome in its time dominated the known world much more completely than the United States does in today's world. Rome was the core of the civilized and advanced world of its age. All things considered, with adjustments made for time and technology, and relative to the world as it was known then, the Roman Empire was history's greatest superpower.

Eclipse Solar 83 Western Rome declined because it had an unsustainable economy that was almost entirely based on slavery and plunder and they kept acquiring vast areas of land with few natural resources. Eventually, they spread themselves too thin to be able to keep the barbarian hordes under control. You can’t have an empire if you can’t pay your army. Internal mismanagement was also a problem. They pissed off the Huns and Goths by promising them refuge from their enemies, and then abused and demanded tribute from them, sparking a backlash.
