I love how this anthems melody is the same as the modern Germany. Shows a relation between the two states and allows people too more easily understand appreciate how the nations of the past have influenced the modern ones
Buddy! Get it together! It's Gott Erhalte, Deutschlandlied, Sei gesegnet ohne Ende , Afrikaners Landgenote, and more. It's happened to many of us, I not how it feels.
Several years ago, I was watching Sissi - Schicksalsjahre einer Kaiserin. Near the end, as they were playing this tune. I thought, wait a minute, why are they playing Das Deutschlandlied in a movie about the Austrian Empress. Thus began my bit of research. I never knew that the tune was originally the anthem of the Holy Roman and Austrian empires. Thank you for posting this.
So much confusion, when a bit of research could do the trick. Its a personal anthem to the Habsburg Kaiser Franz. He was both Holy Roman Emperor as well as Austrian Emperor. Its not a "national" anthem of the HRE. This song originally had association with the House of Habsburg and therefore with Austria (in this case the Austrian empire is what I mean), because Austria was the hereditary land of the dynasty and the HRE was dissolved only 9 years after the song was written. It then become more and more also an anthem of the country Austrian Empire and later Austria-Hungary, as well as its people as national/imperial identity become more pronounced in the 19th century. Fallersleben wrote a new text to the melody when German nationalism was rising in the 1840s. This song melody became the German national anthem with Fallerslebens text in 1922 only, after the imperial age of both Austria and Germany was over. In short National anthem of Austrian empire: Yes National anthem of HRE: No Hymn of the house of Habsburg and the dynasty: Yes

Last stronghold of feudalism in Europe, it was better than any nation state could ever be. It was the true definition of Empire as something glorious and worth preserving. 1st Reich >>> 2nd and especially 3rd.
