      Thank you for the review! ❤ We know, Netflix only owns the distribution rights for the show, so there is a hope that it will find a new home. Also, Complete Firction, the production company, hasn't told the fans to stop campaifning, so we do believe there is a chance it will be picked by someone else!

      If you liked these books, Stroud has another series that I read first and still like better: The Bartimaeus Trilogy. It begins as a two POV narrative passed between a noir-radio detective (who happens to be a snarky demon) and his "client", an over-ambitious magician's apprentice. Together they stumble headlong into a plot to take over the government of an alternate history London, and many snarky high-jinks ensue.
      As the series progresses, the character depth scales quite well, and there are solid emotional punches to be had and great callback moments.

And quite frankly, making Quill Kipps from the TV show an eventual Lockwood & Co employee, is much more believable than making the book version of Kipps a member. Just a supreme job by the screen play writers and the casting director.

    The show is legitimately one of the BEST and most-true-to-the-source adaptions that I have ever seen. They obviously made some superficial changes, like you mentioned, but kept the core of the characters/plot/setting/etc true to the books. I really had only 2 qualms (Skull wasn't unpleasant enough, and the change to the climax in the catacombs), but really--that's not very many qualms! I was devastated (but not surprised) when they cancelled the show. I hope the best for the young actors, for they all did a great job. I'm so glad you liked the show and the books!

    I subscribed to Netflix for a month to watch Lockwood & Co on the strength of Jill's video about the fight scenes, and was not disappointed. I also watched Dune (too many compression artefacts) and Enola Holmes 1 & 2 (which I recommend) before my month expired, so I got fair value.

    • @The2wanderers
      @The2wanderers 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The Enola Holmes movies were awful adaptations. Got annoyed at the first one and literally couldn't make it through the second. The books are amazing, and do a much more believable job of fitting their feminist heroine into Victorian London.

      I watched the movies first, then read the books, and I like the movies until I read the books. It's kind of a "you cant go back and like them as much" for me. I think it's because I'm pretty aromantic, and Enola never falls in love in the books (they really aged up the Marquess in the movie, he's a little whiny brat in the book) and I liked that more. The movies are still great, tho

    • @rightsarentpolitical
      @rightsarentpolitical 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's actually really fascinating because I had the opposite reaction - I loved the movies so read the books because people seemed to like them, and really wasn't impressed. I still love the movies, but personally wouldn't recommend the books. On the other hand, I read the L&Co books because I loved the series and read them literally 3 times last year as a palette/ mental cleanser and came away each time pleased (and yes, also am exploring his other series). It was excessively frustrating and stupid for Netflix to cancel this as well as Julie & The Phantoms and still for some reason keep Emily in Paris going despite the corruption topping the racism and statutory r@pe within the show itself. Like, what are we doing, Netflix?!? Two wholesome shows with loving fanbases and... this mess.

    Netflix cancels shows after one season, cause they have to pay the authors a decent amount after that. They get a big discount on writers' fees and cast salaries and directors' wages in order to get the first series off the ground, but in return, they put increased monetary benefits for the cast and creative staff from series two onwards.
    And then they skip on paying those out by simply not making any more series. If your show is not a huge enough hit to keep drawing in fresh subscribers, then Netflix will not be paying for further series. And considering how many people are subscribed to Netflix already, it should be no surprise to anyine that Netflix keeps cancelling shows after one season...

    Mentioning "The Mark of Zorro", just wondering if you might ever consider a look at the 1920 silent film version. If only because 1. it would be interesting to hear your perspective on filmmaking and sword fighting from the dawn of cinema, and 2. that film still ranks as one of the most life-changing film experiences of my life. I saw it at a concert hall with the incredible Paragon Ragtime Orchestra providing live musical accompaniment, and before the film started a presenter came out to introduce the audience to what the theater experience was like in the days of silent films; you were not there to simply sit quietly and watch the movie, the audience was 1/3rd of the experience! You were encouraged to cheer for the hero, boo the villain, swoon for the damsel, gasp in suspense, laugh at the comedy. And I guess I drew the cosmic lottery because by the second half the audience was 100% committed to sparkle motion, and the energy that that enthusiasm generated was indescribable, aided by a fantastic film and a phenomenal musical performance. True, my mother and I both ended up almost bedridden with the flu by the time we got home, but despite that I will forever remember that and pine to relive that experience.

    I'm so happy to hear you enjoyed the books!! They're some of my favourites, and now I'm here to rec the same author's Bartimaeus trilogy as well^^ there's a lot of similar themes but there is 200% more snarky, including snarky footnotes not unlike good omens, and one of the main characters is literally centuries old so there's a lot of fun historical flashbacks as well.
    Now I'm going to go reread Lockwood ❤

    I read the first book years ago as an adult and loved it so much I read the rest of the series in about a week. It’s so much fun. The author has a newer series called Scarlett & Browne that’s also excellent. (I confess, the opening lines remind me so much of Jill: “That morning, with the dawn hanging wet and pale over the levees, Scarlett McCain woke up beside four dead men. Four! She hadn’t realised it had been so many. No wonder she felt stiff.”)

    I DEVOURED this show, and I never watch anything these days. I watched it three times in a row, and loved it so much I bought the books...only for Netflix to cancel it. Pretty sad to see awful adaptations get renewed for multiple seasons but for actual good shows to be canceled immediately.

    Yes it was supremely disappointing to realize last year that the show wasn’t getting a second season, especially when enough people did seem to like it and it spent time on Netflix’s top 10 list. I’ve definitely gotten to the point where it feels pointless to like anything new and get invested because the likelihood that it will be allowed to grow and continue is close to zero 😂 and it’s not like they tried very hard to market it which just begs the question of were they going to cancel it all along? 🤷‍♀️

    I don’t normally have Netflix (since I know I tend to binge watch too much), but decided to get it for the month of May.
    Your Lockwood videos were why I checked out the series and I love it so much! Have you ever watched something and immediately thought, “12-year-old me would have loved this!”? It’s fun, creative, and the banter is top notch. Thanks for sharing and for reminding me that Netflix cancelling a show is not the worst they can do to it 😊 🗡️ 👻

    lockwood and co came out as i was going from child to teenager and they always came out in october or november and i always asked for them for my birthday and this is one of my favourite book series of all time. i revisited the first one when the series came out and they‘re still great as an adult. i honestly need to read the whole thing again because i forgot the ending but it is 100% the best book adaptation i have ever seen.
    it‘s almost bizzare seeing people care about this so mucg all of the sudden because for a long time it was just me in my room with the book in my hand and when i first started getting into online fandom, there was nothing, this is great.

    Finished your book JSMN! loved the story line, flow sorta hard to follow but the crossed daggers breaks were very helpful. Maybe a variety of crossed daggers for each universe? would be helpful. The authors personal life mixing in with her characters life was nice but plays better as video shorts vs book. With some minor improvements would love to see a second book.

    Absolutely gutted to hear that Netflix canceled Lockwood & Co! 😔 This adaptation had so much potential with its thrilling storyline and fantastic characters. It's truly disappointing to see such a unique and well-loved series cut short. The chemistry between Lockwood, Lucy, and George was electric, and the eerie atmosphere of the novels was captured brilliantly. Here's hoping another platform sees the value in this remarkable series and gives it the chance it deserves! #SaveLockwoodAndCo ⚔✨

    I adore the work of Jonathan Stroud- his "Batimaeus Trilogy" was a staple of my childhood, and a book that I come back to whenever I get the chance, and they're the best "Book you loved as a kid that still holds up 20 years later".
    Strong recommendation for the 3 books of the trilogy- "The Amulet of Samarkand", "The Golem's Eye" and "The Gate of Ptolemny", as well as the prequel book "The Ring of Solomon", even if they might not give you the sort of material that makes for a good video. They're just lovely books.

    Yes! The series is so good. I absolutely loved it. The whole world building and characters and mystery and all the cool, supernatural stuff. Plus, Lucy and Lockwood have amazing chemistry. All of the acting is superb, but the actor playing Lockwood might be the best one - and it's his first screen job! I bought the first book in the series right after watching the show and I'm slowly (don't want to finish the good stuff too fast) making my way through them.

    They did a lot of filming in Kensal Green Cemetery and used its name in the programme. I live near there and saw some of the sets, fake coffins etc during filming and have identified all the locations they used there. However, while the chapel they used is there, and has a working coffin lift as they showed, the catacombs they filmed in were elsewhere.

    I actually read Lockwood & Co. years ago, and I liked them so much I bought them. (For context, I work at a library where you can check out any number of books for free, so buying a book is a sign of great esteem.) What really captured me was the lore - there was a definite, logical science behind the art of ghosthunting and -fighting. The characters were likable, too, but solid worldbuilding was the main draw for me. When I visited the author's website at the time, it said that there were talks in process of adapting it for TV, but nothing ever came of it, and I kind of forgot about it.
    Fast foward several years, and I heard there was going to be a Netflix show. I was ecstatic but apprehensive (as I am anytime there is an adaptation of a book to a visual medium). How well would the producers translate it? Answer: they did FANTASTIC. It was so well done that while I noted the occasional change of ethnicity or gender (and viewers who have read the books always do), it wasn't jarring, because the characterizations were excellent. I don't watch much TV as a rule (and thus don't subscribe to any streaming services), but I binge watched the series with my brothers while visiting them, and I loved every minute of it.
    I can't even tell you how devastated I was to hear the show was cancelled. If it were possible to crowdfund the production of a Season 2 (and 3, if needed), I would open my wallet SO fast. But I know that's not likely. It's just so frustrating.

    In the realm of Netflix series that don't get enough hype, have you considered analysing the fight scenes from Blue Eye Samurai? There's some epic fights from duels to 1 v an army, and some great uses of environment, and some awesome character writing alongside! (I would tentatively say even well written strong female characters! 😱) Would defo recommend.
