Gleefully bought the book on opening night, have equally gleefully finished it and now it's time for a slower, savouring-all-favourite-moments kind of rereading and rewatching of the shorts series :) Thank You for the excellent entertainment 💚
"Dwarfs" vs. "dwarves" - "Dwarfs" is technically the correct term for multiple Real World little people, but "dwarves" is the generally accepted plural form for mythical little people, because Tolkein (being Tolkein) decided "dwarves" made more etymological sense. Seriously. 😂
I believe he preferred "dwarrows", but went for "dwarves" for legibility. I think he also wanted to distinguish his fantasy dwarves from real world dwarfs. Snow White's little men could really be either, and being a pre-Tolkien fairy tale, could even be fantasy dwarfs.
" Tolkein decided "dwarves" made more etymological sense " Well he was an Oxford Fellow and a Professor of Anglo-Saxon so if anyone should know it would be him. There is the story about how he got his new students to speak to him, and then identified every bit of their accents and their origins, just to demonstrate that when he spoke to them in Anglo-Saxon they could believe his language and pronunciation.
@@bloodspatteredguitar They could definitely have been fantasy Dwarves. Even Tolkien just grabbed Elves and Dwarves from Germanic folklore, and Snow White is a Germanic fairy tale.
I always enjoyed mirror mirror because everyone seemed to be having fun. I was always under the impression that they were handed a horrid script and everyone involved just went “this script? Are you sure? F**k it, at least we’ll have fun with it” and proceeded to go completely over the top with everything. There are scenes where you can see the actors struggling not to break. It’s not good, but it’s infinitely more fun than the dour, joyless Snow White and the huntsman that came out the same year.
That's why I started liking Arnold S. (not attempting to spell last name). We saw Red Sonja when it came out and he seemed to recognize that it was just a fun, campy movie and went with it. So then I started watching for any time he was in a comedy.
I still believe the absolute best flirty fight is between Zorro (Antonio Banderas) and Elena (Catherine Zeta-Jones) - and I haven't seen anything to top it yet!
Yeah, I enjoyed Mirror Mirror mainly for the supporting cast (having the 7 dwarfs played by 7 of the best ACTUAL dwarf actors was truly inspired), the general campy aesthetic, and just the fact that it's bizarrely thirsty for a PG movie
I watched that film in theatres with my mother. She said "This feels exactly like a Bollywood film", includimg the dance number at the end. That was literally Punjabi music, and it confirmed what we already believed. Turns out the director is Punjabi. I asked my mother about it just now, and she has fond memories of it. Edit- The answer to all your questions is "Bollywood". Snow White isn't the self insert, the prince is...
So they might be interesting characters by Indian standards, but distractingly trite by English standards? Not as a statement that one standard or the other is better, just looking for different things.
That makes sense tbh, Snow honestly felt like a side character femme fatale written to just validate all the men around her. I mean she goes around either falling in love with the first guy she meets or changing everything about herself to fit in with a group of men. And she has zero thoughts and feelings of her own. Not even so much of a reaction to anything she’s experiencing or anything happening to her. The only time she seems to smile is when she pleases some guy, it’s a little weird considering she’s the main character. Plus the end of that fight scene was sus. It felt like the writers going “don’t worry guys, the prince may have (barely) lost this fight because the plot demands it, but he has already won the heart of the princess without even trying! Look, she’s making doe eyes and calling him cute! Isn’t that great?”
Once I got to the dance scene all the strange choices and fun outfits made 100% sense. And it was so much more enjoyable than snow while and the huntsmen
My impression of the dialogue is that it's all first draft lines. "You're a jerk" and "if you and your friends stop robbing them" are just straightforward descriptions of what the characters are feeling. Like if you took a swordfight scene from a Pirates of the Caribbean movie and removed all the jokes and personality while still having them plainly state their intentions, this is what you'd get.
I was having trouble putting my finger on what was odd about the dialogue but I agree with first draft lines. Definitely a case where the script needed more time in the oven. However I have to admit the production design and costumes looked amazing.
Mr and Mrs Smith (2005) has a great flirty fight scene where they destroy their house. The plot of the movie makes almost the whole movie one long flirty fight.
Funny story about keeping one's eyes open when around swords... The actor Günter Meisner was blind as a bat without his glasses. He played Adolf Hitler in the 1983 miniseries The Winds of War. Many scenes were filmed on location in Germany. Well, when you are an American crew filming in Europe and need extras, hitting up US military bases is something of a tradition. My dad, was stationed in Garmisch-Partenkirchen (I was a toddler) working as a public affairs liaison for the USAF. He was tapped to play an SS officer, and was the shortest (5'10") one in line. He was also the darkest (brown hair and hazel eyes) in the line of 6'+ blond US Army guys. However they taught him to do the saber salute for the scene were Hitler arrives at The Eagle's Nest. Günter Meisner missed his mark, because he, as I mentioned, is blind without his glasses. My dad did the saber salute and damn near took off Meisner's hand (because they gave my dad a real sword). So, I agree, keeping eyes open is important. Also, my dad "kept" the SS Officer's gloves he was supposed to turn back in. So, there is a bit if film history in my dad's house.
When she says she is an actor combatant I like to imagine she hangs around on top of theatres during dark stormy nights brooding just waiting for some thespian to step into a dark alley and start reciting Chicago and brandishing a butterfly knife before swooping in (rightfully) slaying them like some kind of love child of Batman and Zorro.
The prince is as dumb as dirt, too. Book is progressing nicely. Really liked the flashback scene of how Rosamund and Hugo met. Hope Nemo is doing OK. Bye for now and 🧀

As I understand it, dwarves is 100% correct in the Tolkein context and beyond that it is a stylistic choice. I believe this was a debate between Tolkein and his editor until Tolkein pointed out he wrote (part of) the dictionary his editor was using to defend "dwarfs".
If you've watched the entire Fantasy Heroine series of shorts or compilations, you already KNOW the story! There are obviously differences in a novelization, but the story beats are the same!!!
I love this movie, especially the Bollywood song at the end. The fight scene for me was more of him playing with her and humoring her. I thought she wasn’t meant to be great with the sword since she never held one before. This movie was just so camp.❤ and I loved the end credits telling us about the dwarves.
Yes - that is such a good idea! I am pretty sure she likes Firefly, because if I remember correctly, some of her earliest videos are about the characters!
Just started the book and loving every page! As far as the prince 'charming goes', there's a fine line between flirting and condescension. I don't think princey even sees the line
The chemistry between Westley and Inigo was so much better (and not even romantic). I only watched this movie once and totally forgot about it until this video of yours (yet I lost count of how many times I watched Princess Bride).
Personally, as someone who only knows and loves the German voice acting version, I think it is a very fun fact to mention that the love potion is, quite literally, a puppy love potion. And thank you for analyzing this fight, although it is quite… meh. I take it more as a comedy than anything else.
I was just wondering if maybe the german dialogue is better? Because I watched the movie initially in german, too, and quite liked both characters. (I was also very impressionable, even more when it came to modern fairy tale adaptations)
@@BixLovesMiley As far as I remember, the German dialogue isn’t better, and the characters are also a little flat, but the combination of all the characters, their interactions with each other and the surrounding circumstances combine very well and make the movie very enjoyable. Another big part is the voice acting - Julia Roberts’ German voice is great, and the prince is funny. Though in the fight scene the dialogue is the same, just in German. But the German voices are great. :)
I remember Mirror Mirror. I remember Julia Roberts being hilarious. I remember that there was a dance ending and the apple scene seemed to have her magically figure out who was offering it. I remember nothing else. I did not remember that there was a sword fight or a prince.
Very similar to this one, I would love to see your take on really any of the fights in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. There's some fun flirty fights, some really emotional fights and it's all so perfectly wrapped up in the otherworldliness of the wuxia style of fighting!
that's INTERNATIONAL best selling author. and yes, my copy arrived sometime while I was dealing with yesterday's crises. I plowed through the remainder of my previous book so I could get started on it this morning, and it is great.
this movie is such a guilty pleasure of mine. Is it horrible? yes. does it make make me cringe out of my skin at times? absolutely. will I still rewatch it over and over? of course.
Lovely analysis! And I mostly agree, however, I differ in that I actually genuinely do enjoy this movie, and rewatch it every so often, but I like it not because the characters are particularly likable, but because a) its so silly and cheesy, it just makes for a fun watch b) I just really enjoy the fun, over the top costume design in it, the costume designer went so hard with some of the fits! And finally c) I just really have a personal interest and enjoyment in seeing and reading all sorts of different interpretations of fairy tales! I know some people think they're over played/over done and its not ENOUGH if its not a SUPER ORIGINAL INTERPRETATION, but I think its just really fun to see that these old classic tales still hold enough value to us as a society for us to continue to reinvent them over and over, hundreds of years later 🥰
Same - I enjoy the campiness, it's visually appealing, Julia Roberts is great fun as the evil queen, and I also had a childhood obsession with unusual/more dark variations of fairy tales!
I think his condescension and being a jerk would work fine, if they gave him a better arc by the end! I keep thinking of the prince in Ever After who changes so much. But this prince… doesn’t really grow all that much. So it falls flat.
My boyfriend is a HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) instructor for 10 years - specifically Meyer and Lichtenauer if I remember correctly. It is always a joy watching movies, series or even documentaries when sword fighting is involved… He is forbidden to comment (until I start) upon the fighting. Recently they started also with rapier fencing, so yeah me I guess…
Congratulations! For the first time since the plugin became available, I did not skip the sponsor read. I've finally got a day off tomorrow so I'm off to my local bookshop to collect Just Stab Me Now😃
As much as I enjoyed the Rosalind shorts, I’ve missed your fight analysis videos. They’re the reason I started following you and I’m so glad you have time to do them again!🥹
But they did have chemistry. They're the childish chemistry of tepid water (Snow White) and dirt (Prince not at all Charming). The resulting mess is an unappealing mud pie.
I saw this in the theater, and as a stage combat guy I remember thinking “oh….they…copied….wait…this is just the westly/man in black vs inego montoya fight from Princess Bride! That’s why the flourishes, the hand changing, the front flip! YOU SCHMUCKS! “ so…that was my read and why I never went back to it:):p
It's good to see you back at fight analysis, Jill. The curls are glorious, by the way. I didn't realize this movie was made that long ago. I vaguely remember watching it, feeling uncomfortable when Snow and Prince interacted, and I don't think I even got through the whole thing (which is saying something!).
Besides the wardrobe and the sets, my single most favorite thing about this whole movie is that besting one much smaller friend in combat and standing on a ball = sword fighting expertise. I was six when I watched it and I did not argue with that logic.
I legitimately laughed several times in this video. You're hilarious 😄I actually like _Mirror, Mirror_ , but your comments are spot on. It is really dumb, but I guess it's my kind of dumb. 😁
I kind of enjoyed the flirty fight between Esmerelda and Phoebus. Also, I remember when I first saw the trailer for the live-action George of the Jungle and it looked like another Tarzan movie. Then you hear "duh, duh..." I didn't even need the third note--I was rolling in my seat laughing because I thought it was so hilariously ridiculous that they would make a live-action George of the Jungle. Then I saw the movie. I wasn't wrong. lol
I think the biggest issue with the fight for me is that it almost feels too playful on the Prince's end. Its been a while since I saw the Zoro fight but from what I remember you at least got the implication that if the guy didn't take his foe seriously he would get badly hurt while here I never got the impression that even if this was a serious fight the prince would get hurt. It felt more like an older sibling playing with a younger sibling rather than two romantic leads interacting. The fact that Snow White wins seemingly more due to luck regarding positioning and having a good throwing arm rather than skill or careful maneuvering does not help matters.
I felt this whole fight just increased my impression that the prince was an arrogant, condescending sort and not charming in the least. There was no chemistry between the white rice and mayonnaise.
Mostly-uncultured American here, albeit with an ear for various ways English words are pronounced. I could listen to Jill say "out now" all day long. It's so adorable and Irish. And yes, hooray for the book. Ordered it yesterday.
I'm going to say this again - Just Stab Me Now - couldn't put it down! The only thing I'm disappointed about it is how quickly I managed to finish it! I "just one more chapter'ed" myself through it in about two days! What can I say? I couldn't put it down! It is fantastic! I love it!
I chuckled at the George of the Jungle joke. Pleasantly surprised that you picked up on it. Enjoyed the analysis. Patiently (?) waiting for B&N to ship my book order. Good luck on the move.
I'm so done with this cold. I hope everyone else is feeling well, or at least better than I am feeling. I'm reading THE BOOK right now and I'm enjoying it.
So, I received the kindle version of Just Stab Me Now the other day… And so yesterday I just sat and read it. All of it. I finished your book in a day. That’s generally a pretty good sign for me.
Will admit that I love this film in large part because I've got a huge crush on Lily Collins, but I also enjoyed the fantastic costumes, set design, and those silly musical set pieces.
Just got my copy of Just Stab me Now, in the mail and as soon as I’m finished with my current book, it is what I’m planning to read next. Also I was really happy to see this video pop up in my feed. I hope to see more in the near future. ❤ 😊
maybe a bit technical, but it looks like this production had a seasoned stunt coordinator and fight choreographer, but a first-time second unit director (and about 12 people credited as second or third assistant directors). makes sense that the sword work was passible, but the dialog and character relationships were meh at best. Add to that 12 executive producers, three producers, and an associate producer, and I wonder if there wasn't a lot of "just who is in charge here" going on around that set.
At the beginning, I was like "Oh, I haven't seen that film," then seeing the clips with the...unique costuming choices triggered my memory. I had successfully blocked this film until now. I take solace in the fact that at least most of it is still a fuzzy vague impression, but I am grateful for the fight analysis!
The book is brilliant, as is this video! Congratulations to actor combatant, content creator and bestselling author Jill Bearup! I hope you have ample cheese to aid your recovery from a quite tremendously busy week.
Yay, more fight scene analysis! I love seeing these - I can never have even seen the move you're talking about, but I get so much from your breakdown that I feel like I know the entire story of what's happening and why we are where we are. And for the ones that I HAVE seen? You open my eyes to so many more details that make watching it again an even better experience! Can't wait to see the book!
This was my FAVORITE movie growing up, but I haven't thought about it in years. Juila Roberts was such a good villain, and the customs were beautiful. If you were to dig deep into the recesses of my google drive, I'm sure you'd find some AU of this from like fifth grade...
I like this movie, but not because of Snow and the prince. Mostly because Julia Robert’s as the Queen is so good and the dwarves are also great. I feel like this movie knows what it’s trying to be which is a campy Snow White comedy and so nothing is meant to be taken too seriously.
It's good to be back (happy, contented sigh) Hope you're all having a fabulous day.

Sean also lives throughout the whole Sharpe series where he is Richard Sharpe, some say that is why he is cursed to play characters that die now

There are a lot of bisexuals who beg to differ about it not being romantic.
@@kiiroshidori4296 Yeah right, the Julia Roberts voice actress really makes a difference.
Wait, Sean Bean lives? Through the whole movie? Is that allowed?
Well he became a beast that was destroyed so he dies twice but survives on a technicality.
It's becoming a game, will he survive or not
@@chadfalardeau5396 To be fair, those are the only two options for everyone in a movie.
Yay for fight analysis! On an unrelated note, your hair looks super pretty!
I thought she wasn't like other girls?
I remember Mirror Mirror. I remember Julia Roberts being hilarious. I remember that there was a dance ending and the apple scene seemed to have her magically figure out who was offering it. I remember nothing else. I did not remember that there was a sword fight or a prince.
Jill. Jill. Jill... you are burying the lede. Sean Bean lives in this one!
7:36 sat here eating cous cous and mayonnaise(admittedly with garlic and veg, and ngl, feeling quite seen, lol
"it is alleged he might be charming" 😂
Ooh, a phantom of the Opera reference!
Very similar to this one, I would love to see your take on really any of the fights in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. There's some fun flirty fights, some really emotional fights and it's all so perfectly wrapped up in the otherworldliness of the wuxia style of fighting!
Jill has already got a video up about the Dojo fight scene with many, many weapons.
Yaaaaaaaay!!! Fight choreography! I love the jerk parrying behind his back move, that is so condescending!
It's been said I'm sure but dang Lily Collins has some truly impressive eyebrows. They're neat. Also I loved the book, it was a lot of fun.
She looks a lot like audrey hepburn especially with the bangs and eyebrows
@@bisma1352 Definitely.
Your face when you talk about their "chemistry" is a great one! 😂
that's INTERNATIONAL best selling author.
and yes, my copy arrived sometime while I was dealing with yesterday's crises. I plowed through the remainder of my previous book so I could get started on it this morning, and it is great.
this movie is such a guilty pleasure of mine. Is it horrible? yes. does it make make me cringe out of my skin at times? absolutely. will I still rewatch it over and over? of course.
I do enjoy the costumes in this movie. Especially the ball scene.
@@sakunaruful oh absolutely, the costuming is beautiful
"Bear with me"
Or "Bearup with me" if you will
Him slapping her on the butt with his sword gives me Roshi vibes in the worst way possible. It really just makes the prince look like a perve imo.
At least they didn't transform snow white into the ultimate sword master in a single montage.
Lovely analysis! And I mostly agree, however, I differ in that I actually genuinely do enjoy this movie, and rewatch it every so often, but I like it not because the characters are particularly likable, but because a) its so silly and cheesy, it just makes for a fun watch
b) I just really enjoy the fun, over the top costume design in it, the costume designer went so hard with some of the fits!
Sean Bean's character LIVES! That doesn't seem to happen too often.
Yay, flirty fight reviews! You look so happy to be doing these again, even if it's a bad movie.
MY GOD!!!! A movie where Sean Bean Lives!!!!!!
Obviously the Queen is the best character in this. I love how silly this film is 😊
"A particularly vacant version of Christine Daae" 🤣🤣🤣
not gonna lie, i'm pretty her outfit with the blue blouse and embroidered corset thingy are what made me enjoy this movie when i was younger
Yay for a fight analysis!
White rice &mayonnaise flawless descriptor.
Well done on The Book!
Holy crap, this makes the romance between Padme and Anakin in Attack of the Clones look steamy.😂
Well, it was made in 2013. A decade ago now.
@@sakunaruful isn't that crazy to think about.
Besides the wardrobe and the sets, my single most favorite thing about this whole movie is that besting one much smaller friend in combat and standing on a ball = sword fighting expertise. I was six when I watched it and I did not argue with that logic.
"She's a pretty girl and he likes to play". Love this line.
I legitimately laughed several times in this video. You're hilarious 😄I actually like _Mirror, Mirror_ , but your comments are spot on. It is really dumb, but I guess it's my kind of dumb. 😁
Still waiting for my book - promised this weekend
And hoping the page before chapter 1 has just one line "The plot it goeth thusly"
Very good. I could leave a spoiler, but I shan’t Mabry it.
I wasn't wrong. lol
the Dutch love to read :) It's a great compliment if you make our bestseller list!
It warmed my heart to hear "The plot goeth thusly" again ❤️
*Sean Bean's character LIVES??!!*
🤭🤭🤭
I think the biggest issue with the fight for me is that it almost feels too playful on the Prince's end. Its been a while since I saw the Zoro fight but from what I remember you at least got the implication that if the guy didn't take his foe seriously he would get badly hurt while here I never got the impression that even if this was a serious fight the prince would get hurt. It felt more like an older sibling playing with a younger sibling rather than two romantic leads interacting. The fact that Snow White wins seemingly more due to luck regarding positioning and having a good throwing arm rather than skill or careful maneuvering does not help matters.
Welcome back, Jill! It's lovely to have an analysis again :D
I'm sitting here with my dinner that is primarily boiled white rice. I feel unjustly called out!
The footage has a Hallmark Movie quality. A combo of scenery, costuming, and lens choice?
Also the aspect ratio is not actually 16:9 but it's not a proper cinematic ratio either, and it's weird.
I'm going to say this again - Just Stab Me Now - couldn't put it down! The only thing I'm disappointed about it is how quickly I managed to finish it! I "just one more chapter'ed" myself through it in about two days! What can I say? I couldn't put it down! It is fantastic! I love it!
According to Tolkien (who wrote the entry on the word "dwarf" in the OED) both dwarves and dwarfs are correct.
8:05 “like she’s a particularly vacant version of Christine Daae” 🤣🤣🤣 I’M ROLLING
I'm just in chapter 2 but I like it so far.
Unfortunately still waiting for my copy to come in
So, I received the kindle version of Just Stab Me Now the other day…
And so yesterday I just sat and read it. All of it. I finished your book in a day.
That’s generally a pretty good sign for me.
YESSS FLIRTY FIGHT FEBRUARY IS BACK!!!! I absolutely love this series and I'm so hyped
Will admit that I love this film in large part because I've got a huge crush on Lily Collins, but I also enjoyed the fantastic costumes, set design, and those silly musical set pieces.
I unapologetically love this movie...but as a lover of flirty fights, this one hurts me! Like physically hurts! It's so icky!
That is. a LOT of directors. Surely they can't all be directing? Who's directing the directors?
At the beginning, I was like "Oh, I haven't seen that film," then seeing the clips with the...unique costuming choices triggered my memory. I had successfully blocked this film until now. I take solace in the fact that at least most of it is still a fuzzy vague impression, but I am grateful for the fight analysis!
God the costumes in this film are just so gorgeous! RIP Eiko!
Thank you for your book "Just Stab Me Now" I've gotten back into reading!
"This hurts me, and now it will hurt you to." - is a mood.
