After our year with the Mini, we still think the Civic Si and Golf GTI are more well-rounded machines. Would you take a Cooper S over any of its competition?

NO!! I would take the Honda over both.

I’m sure glad this review didn’t come out BEFORE I bought my ‘23 two (3?) door! I’m loving mine. OK, I don’t have to wrangle car seats, but dude, if you need a bigger car get a bigger car. Why so much angst? My A/C worked great through the hottest Texas Summer I’ve ever experienced. The problem is the A/C controls are just plain weird, but once you figure it out . . . Oh, and definitely get the upgraded seats with lumbar-way better for longer trips.

People considering this car should realize that this is a recreational car and for most part is usually a 2nd or 3rd car in the household. Secondly, in my opinion it wasn't designed to traverse long distances like one does in the US (not that it can't) and hence the absence of creature comforts . Lastly, it's a single/dual passenger car and not meant for filling it up like a mini van with passengers and luggage. If you keep that in mind then it's an awesome car to blow steam off (if you can find some curvy roads) and a blast to drive making even the most mundane grocery runs to be fun. The Golf is a better option for folks leaning towards practicality but then it doesn't drive like a Mini...

I love my mini. 2023 Cooper s I bought it in Aug. of 2022. I’ve driven it from SoCal to Albuquerque NM and back with my dog (golden retriever) and it was a blast! Side note, do not crash this car. I did a few months ago, thank god for insurance, but the costs to fix are outrageous! Hit a curb nothing else. Over $8k to fix. Like I said, thank you insurance.

That review is pretty much spot on. I have a basically identical '23 MCS, but it came with Hankook Optimo run-flat tires. I think the Hankooks might ride a bit better than the Goodyear F1s. I find the Mini's suspension to be plenty comfortable for road trips and the cargo space (seats up or down) is more than adequate and there's also a large storage area under the rear cargo floor. There can be a good bit of road and/or wind noise depending on pavement surface and speed. I prefer using the iDrive controller and don't like using a touchscreen while driving. No android auto, but my android phone pairs up fine for music and calls and the integrated BMW navigation works better than android or Apple maps/nav anyway. The 7 speed dual clutch automated manual transmission is great. While I only use the paddles for a quick downshift now and again, pulling the shifter over into manual mode lets the car behave exactly like a manual transmission. That works great in traffic, through the curves, or in the hills. So it will drive exactly like a manual if you want it to. My MPG is similar, but I drive the car pretty hard pretty and have also seen greatly increased MPG on road trips. At 6'0 and on the large-build side, my wife and I both find the front seats and interior to be plenty spacious and very comfortable. Yes, the AC is kind of weak, but it worked well enough through our relatively mild MD summer. The heated seats and steering wheel work VERY well. I probably wouldn't make this my only car, but as a fun driving second car for commuting or weekends it works beautifully. I love the three door hatch style w/ frameless windows and the huge moonroof(s). Civic Si is a sedan/manual combo only with no heated seats. While the GTI may be a more rounded car for a single car household, I prefer the three door hatch style w/ the frameless windows. And I think I paid about the same for the Mini Cooper S as I would've ended up paying for a GTI or Civic Si. GTI prices have gone way up and Civic Si prices are still subject to dealer markup around here. I got $2k off the sticker of my well equipped Mini.

I'm looking to get a "personal" daily driver, something small but sporty, the Mini Cooper S as one of the choices, however my only concern is the ride on long highways and freeways, my daily commute is at least 30 to 40 miles, most of it on the freeway.
I'm used to sports cars, so i don't mind a little stiffness, but I don't know about the seats

    • @wademorefield3797
      @wademorefield3797 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

That's exactly how I use my Mini. I have the base seats and I find them very supportive and comfortable. Freeway comfort is excellent. I'm 6' tall and about 240 pounds, and the seat are a nice snug fit w/ good lateral support and sufficient lumbar support (but no lumbar adjustment in the base seats) for me. There is a thigh extension on the base seats like the BMW sport seats, but I don't find that to be useful for me. The driving position is generally low and your legs will be extended more than you would expect in a typical sedan or SUV (reminds me of an old Toyota Tacoma pickup seating position - high floor and low seats). But I actually love that seating position in the MINI. I think there is an upgrade seat, but I find the base seats more than satisfactory. I've done 8 hour road trips and felt better at the end than I did w/ my Honda Odyssey or Nissan Rogue (and those both have comfortable seats too). No back ache or butt hurt. And I have some hamstring issues that typically show up on long trips, but not when driving the Mini. The Mini seating position seems to facilitate long term comfort. The synthetic seat material on the base seats is great and the seat heaters (optional, but typically equipped) kick ass. I don't find the suspension to be stiff, but my wife told me that she does. I'm also used to motorcycles and sporty cars, so I think it's relatively soft by those standards. But you'll want to dodge the big potholes!

@@wademorefield3797 thanks for sharing, my concern of getting the Mini are the seats, I don't mind the stiff suspension that much since I myself come from sports cars, but the seats are what matters (I'm 6'1 , 240 too)

Odd... I live in Florida and have never felt the a/c in my '23 Mini Cooper S couldn't keep up. Also couldn't help but feel there was a unfair amount of griping in this review. It's a Mini! I guarantee no one looking to buy this car expects to get a baby seat in the back. I consistently get 32 mpg with the manual transmission with fairly spirited driving.

Two-door hardtop is definitely not a family car, more a 2+2. A 4-door hardtop or Countryman/Clubman are the more logical choices for families. As for the stiff ride on 17-inch wheels, I switched from 18-inch rims to 16-inch rims and got regular tires, instead of the runflats. Totally different ride, still fun to drive and race through corners without taking a beating.

I love my 2023 Mini Cooper S. Bought mine on Dec 2022. It's fun to drive and the space inside is just right for me. I must admit that the ride is quite stiff. Makes me want to cry everytime I hit a pothole. 😫 Not sure if I should change tires.

I'm sorry I disagree, the suspension is not that stiff, and the 17inc wheels are fine, if you really wanted to complain, try the JCW with the 18's. Mine has NO AC problems, and I live in FL, mines EXTREMELY GOOD. Next thing, MPG, I've gotten 38 mpg while doing 75 MPH in my manual, and filling up my tank if like 30 bucks and that with gas being $4 a gallon. And yes the trunk is small, but not "Jenga" bad, I've been shopping for a family of 5 to Walmart and no seats were folded. Oh yeah, and my 12 Y/O brother fits amazingly in the back seats, so they are not that small. Cope harder, and try again

I have. the S convertible and the only negative for me is the blind spot is huge. You turn your head and you see nothing but the soft top. The side window is not big enough. I have resigned to driving in the right lanes on highways because the blind spot makes changing lanes frightening.

I have the 2023 4 door (2nd MINI). Bought last year after owning a 2018 VW Golf TSI (Hated the handling).
I love my MINI but it's DEFINITELY lacking in tech.
-No android auto (I had to buy and iphone 🤢😂)
-Still push button entry... I was spoiled on the toughless entry.
-Still scooting the seats forward like a savage, no automatic.
-Even the back up cam is exposed so it gets dirty all the time and is useless in the rain. (VW's flips out of the rear logo emblem)
I was expecting so much more for a $38k car.
But I'm a MINI lover for life so I'm sucking it up. 🫶🏿

I know car seat regulations have changed but when I was a kid in the 90’s we had this old Chrysler minivan that had little fold out car seats in the middle row. They were genius and I loved them. I wonder why cars that are clearly not made for adults to fit in the back don’t bring back the fold out child seat or just make them obviously child sized seat belts with 5 point restraints? Just commit and make the back seat of a (insert sports car here) a toddler only zone.
