@@MostlyFish21 because it’s tenth anniversary fell in line with Wii U era, so it was remastered then the same way Wind Waker was remastered for its tenth anniversary. It sold alright but not great cause the U was on a heavy decline, and then Nintendo just got lazy and never ported it over to the switch. Shame

I loved the combat moves. Wish that stayed in the series.

Before breath of the wild was released, Twilight Princess was the most sold Zelda game
Majoras mask streamlined the overworld compared to ocarina, created characters with far deeper backstories and personalities. Not to mention the dungeon design is peak Zelda, I don’t understand how it wouldn’t be on par with the others.

So true, Majoras mask is the most unique and deep Zelda game! Definitely on par with Ocarina and soo much better than twilight princess IMO!!!! Plus it has one of the most brilliant melancholy soundtracks ever!!!!!
Music has played a much less important role and hasn't been the focus for newer Z games unfortunately...
I blame it on the fact that they're original composer koji kondo has been gradually stepping back and letting other composers make the newer soundtracks (they're decent but not as amazing)
The visual aspects of the games have improved more recently which is still an upside.. but its like a trade off
Pacing. A lot of wacky things happening with the time travel mechanic, and some sidequests are ehh and others are amazing and they are the main thing about the game.
Also, the N64 original is so buggy and obviously rushed, the saving system is horrible...
My thoughts also, it took what was good about OoT and managed to make it better.
Twilight Princess was the "Zelda formula" at it's peak. Everything that made Ocarina of Time great was pushed to 11 and it's just the best in that regard.

Twilight princess also brought attention back to the series. Windwaker was good but it came out at the wrong time and many ppl felt Nintendo was going kiddy. Twilight princess re-established the Zelda franchise as a gritty fantasy. And it worked.
Twilight Princess is sinfully underrated. A true magnum opus of what a Zelda game should be.

It is obvious that LOTR fantasy gave the Legend of Zelda much of its aesthetics. But out of all the Zelda games I think the one which wears its LOTR inspiration on its sleeve the most is Twilight Princess. The Jackson movies were also ending around the start of TP's development, so I think the point is clear. I really love TP for those reasons, that it seems smarter and more adult than most of the other Zeldas. And the art design choices really put it on top for me.
@@ohandanotheronebitesthedus6247 Twilight Princess is not blurry. The Twilight is just bloomy but that's the point, the HD remaster toned that down and it looks awful and flat.
Majora's Mask is my favorite Zelda game with BOTW and OoT. I understand why some people don't like it, but to me It's an awesome game. Great video, though.

For majoras mask I felt that when u slow down time it really helps with that rushed feeling and yes you do still have to have multiple cycles but that was part of the fun for me imo
Another game that uses multiple cycles is Alan Wake American nightmare. That game is really strange And you're supposed to play it three times.

I'm currently replaying A Link to the Past, and it's amazing how timeless the dungeon design is. I love how dungeons require multiple items. There is some amazing use of verticality in a 2D game too. For example, you have to drop down a bridge in the Dark Palace. I also love when the overworld and dungeon mix like in Skull Woods.
It's my favorite Zelda game. I think it's perfect.
It is amazing to look back at how good the design is for Link to the Past.
Easily the best Zelda game of all-time. Like Anto J. said, it's literally perfect. BotW can't even hold it's jock.
@@TheABElia I'm curious what you guys think of A Link Between Worlds as well as Ocarina of Time because those games are a revisit to the same Hyrule and the ALttP template most well done in 3D, respectively.
@@ade1174 I loved ‘A Link Between Worlds’ but I didn’t enjoy ‘OoT’. I played it for the first time around 10 years ago and found the world empty and barren. ‘ALttP’ has a world that’s lived in. The villages are full of people with unique personalities. OoT is just dull. I guess you had to be there when it first released to think it was great?
Twilight Princess is by far my most favorite game in the series. The atmosphere of the game is second to none, and the characters, story, world, dungeons, and soundtrack are easily some of the best in the series. The game gets way too much hate for no reason.

I think the “hate” he’s referring to is that TP doesn’t get hailed as one of the greatest games of all time consistently. That game hardly has any flaws.
@@BanshoShinra I usually see it on the bottom of the list for 3D Zelda tier lists, which makes absolutely no sense. I've also met people who have hated the game for some weird reason. Twilight Princess is probably the pinnacle of the traditional 3D Zelda series. The dungeons were some of the best in the series, it has the best companion character, and the best combat. The tone/atmosphere of the game paired with the darker visuals is also the best in any Zelda game.

@@Litlrox you're not wrong, but I'd expect contextual evidence to be more important than a single space to convey meaning to you. I think it's obvious to the reader that the author loves the game intro, in which there are no flies, that he meant the sequence, not a non existent fly.

As a kid from the 70s!! Breath of the Wild is the best game I’ve ever played. Ocarina of Time was in a class of one at the time and a Link to the Past I still play every couple of years. Wind Waker is still worth your time as is Twighlight Princess.
The last Zelda I played was Majora's mask, I came back to botw, and just started it a few months ago, I'll tell ya, if I didn't have to work 10 hours a day and some weekends, I would do nothing but play BOTW. It's amazing.

Ima be honest Twilight Princess is phenomenal it’s such a great game
I actually really liked Majora's Mask, and while I can see the whole time thing getting in the way sometimes (it did), overall I liked the sense of "hurry the f--- up or you're gonna die" kind of dread that it brought. It could really get intense. Admittedly, it could also piss you off, but there are also songs that you can learn and use later in the game that you can use (and sometimes have to) to mitigate the game's normal time progression.
I agree with most of your list. However, A Link between Worlds is excellent IMO. It was way to easy but that’s why you get the master quest which makes it so much better. I’ve played it through three times and love every bit of it.
And the gameplay in it was so smooth I really like that game and the music those puzzles,interesting characters fun bossfights my fav top down Zelda
It was that good that I was disappointed with botw when it came out. Why is there no real dungeons and music in botw and totk?!
majora mask is really good. Part of the fun i s exploring everything that is happening on all three days everywhere in the game. then doing different things and seeing what the characters do during the timelines depending on how you interact with them.
When you got to Twilight Princess and said people will call you an idiot, I expected it to be put really low. So to be put in Excellent was a nice surprise. It's my favorite Zelda of all time.

It was the first game I ever bought with my own money, such a great time. Until recently, I wasn't aware that people felt negatively about TP.
@@DanielZeal I remember getting it in the 8th grade in wii. My mom said I could get any game in the case, and it was either TP or Paper Mario. I went with TP because I remembered loving ocarina as a kid (my only zelda experience) after TP I was sold as a die hard fan of the series. Was the first I ever finished.
I'm a 90s kid and the first Zelda I played was BOTW as an adult. What. An. Experience.
As a longtime Zelda fan, I really appreciate that game for getting more people to check out the series 🙏🏿

My absolute FAVORITE two are Oracle of Ages/Seasons. My dad had a business trip, forgot where, but he brought me home a gba and both of those.

I've just bought these two games on 3DS eShop. So good games! That eShop will close soon but these two games will exist on Switch Online and that's so good!
They were my Zelda intro and remain some of my favs too! The rail puzzles still take me awhile to figure out when I replayed it a few years back 😂 I will always hope that Nintendo one day revisits them and remakes them but with the 3rd intended game also created! (The original concept for the games was a set of three games, but it got too complicated from my understanding for the gb)
I'm team ocarina. As a young kid in the 90 the graphics in ocarina were mind-blowing. My first Zelda was actually links awakening on the gb . Damn I feel so old 😂

Twilight Princess is actually My third favorite Zelda too, just after Breath of the Wild and Ocarina of Time. The bizzare snow temple theme is so cool, the forest theme and cave theme are some of the best in My opinon. And I Totally loved the water temple and the gravity boots concept
I think there's a few points where you don't seem to know that Link's awakening came *after* link to the past. When awakening came out it was like they miniaturized a bunch of graphics from link to the past ... Which was kind of an impressive technical feat.

Hot take: Skyward Sword and Oracle of Ages/Seasons are excellent!! IMO.
Skyward Sword (I never had an issue with the Wii controls at the time I even thought it was refreshing) and I like the game as much as Twilight Princess and Ocarina of Time.
Oracle of Seasons/Ages were my first Zelda games I ever played, which means they are still my favorite 2D Zelda games.
Ocarina Of Time blew me away. So imaginative! The music, story, weight… I can remember the day I finished it for the first time. With that ending where is goes back in time and meets Zelda (again) knowing what had went down… masterpiece!
A Link To The Past is my GOAT forever. It's just so well designed and super polished.
Twilight Princess is also my number two. I love wolf stuff, the atmosphere is insanely good.

I mostly agree with your list with a couple exceptions. Skyward Sword on the Wii was great because it made me feel like I was swinging a sword. My top three is Twilight, then Ocarina then Breath.

I agree. Ocarina of Time is the best one. The dungeon design. Music. The jump from 2d to 3d. The story. It's the best all round Zelda game. And to be honest, it's probably the best game ever made. Infact, I think it is.

Damn, Majora's Mask was the first Zelda game I *LOVED.*
I had 2 copies of Zelda 1 on NES (don't know why), played through LTTP (slowly), bought OoT at launch & never finished it, then somehow got absolutely hooked to MM. From there, my appreciation for the series skyrocketed, and I made a concerted effort to play through all future Zelda games.
Until BotW, it was still my favorite. Bummed to see it so low, but hey, not all games resonate with everybody the same way! 😁

I played TP(HD) for the first time, left it half way as I felt it very "tunnel" based and weird, I guess it was because I had only played ALTTP, WWHD, BOTW, LA-remake which are more open.
I didn't want to leave a Zelda unfinished so got back at it again and tried ...it became one of my top Zelda games, almost sheared a tear, it left me wanting more "Zelda".
Also, I think A Link Between Worlds is not talked about enough, I finished it 2 months ago and it was awesome, strangely, it now makes me feel ALTTP a bit ...thined down.

Nah TP is perfectly rated, windwaker for the longest time was underrated until everyone became adults and realized we were just a bunch of moody teens that wanted a realistic zelda.

What I loved about lttp is that you used multiple items from previous dungeons to solve puzzles in subsequent dungeons. The jump to 3d dramatically toned this down. This was especially my issue with twilight princess. Just about every puzzle in each dungeon was solved with that dungeon's items.

I've never played Twilight princess but I played Link between worlds and it had that problem I never really felt like that before.
Also a lot of people are using this description to describe link to the past but I think links Awakening did it really well.
@@bland9876 that's a shame. I've never played link between worlds. Links awakening was amazing. That dungeon on the mountain had me stumped for a long time as a kid.
@@thedarkknight221 link between worlds had this one guy that would sell you all the items and so you would buy one item and then go to whichever dungeon that item was made for and then go back and buy another item from him and go to the next dungeon.
The 2D to 3D transition of a link to the past to ocarina of time can only be compared to super Metroid to Metroid prime. Amazing games that borrowed from each other, and how these franchises doubled down on greatness.
I agree with Twilight Princess being in excellent. It is my favorite Zelda game, and it is severely underrated.

Anyways my point of comment is I LIVED the jump from 2d to 3d with ocarina of time and Mario 64, ect, ect.........I totally agree with most all ur comments and ur rankings good sir. But ppl tht didn't live that jump , like u said, just won't totally get tht amazing MAGICAL feeling tht we all experienced......... Side note:Majora's mask is the only Zelda game tht I DO NOT LIKE at all. As a kid and all the prob 10 times I tried to force myself to like it as an adult . Anyways good vid rgt!!
I didn't watch this video at 1st. I waited a couple days but once I seen it I love it. Ocarina of Time was the best Zelda game because of nostalgia. But before breath of the wild obviously the best Zelda game ever made was Twilight princess. It had darkness, it had graphics it had everything. This is the graphic style I want Zelda to return to in the next generation of Zelda on the switch pro. I mean we should have a zelda that looks like horizon dawn in 4k. But at the same time I'm so addicted to this new anime style I would like them to put this anime style more detailed and in 4k
Unpopular opinion Skyward Sword is my favorite Zelda game and this is coming from someone with Ersb Palsy in his right hand/arm and had a hard time with motion controls. The story was great and I loved the gameplay and the remaastered version on the switch with the improved controls further established it for me. Then it’s Wind Waker HD and 3rd Breath of the Wild

This is based I only recently played the game for the first time about a year ago, and I am playing it again now and I really think it is my favorite. I love almost everything about it even its flaws

Probably the most brilliant and surprising puzzle was in Phantom Hourglass, where you had to close your DS to solve the puzzle. Not sure what you would have done on the 2DS.
Thanks for giving twilight princess the love it deserves it's my favorite Zelda of all time I could go on forever on how much I love it, I definitely prefer the hd version.

Not an easy task ranking Zelda games but I think you did well. I'm a bit of an old school gamer and do rank I and II higher than most would
I don't get why people hate Majora's Mask so much. I loved the overall darker fatalist tone it had and the time travel and tracking mechanic opened a lot of dynamic variation in all areas. Some of the masks were pretty useless, but they added a lot of flavor to the game. I happen to prefer the original N64 version more than the 3DS remaster as well. While I like some of the improvements, I feel they went too far with making it needlessly easier.
I will stand by your choice to put Twilight Princess in the excellent category! Midna is probably the best sidekick, Link has ever had.

I guess some people don't like the whole 3 day cycle and wanting more of something like Ocarina of Time. While I respect people's opinion, I do agree that Majora's Mask is alot better than people give it credit for. I go as far to say I think it's superior to Ocarina of Time.
I never had any Zelda games as a kid. I mean, I had friends with them (NES + SNES games)… i just started playing A Link to the Past on an emulator and OMG im so hooked.

A Link Between Worlds is actually one of the better 2D Zelda’s in my opinion. Yeah I suppose it’s not talked about as much these days but then again not many of the portable entries are. I feel that has more to do with the platforms they’re on than the quality of the games themselves. A 3DS Zelda game just wouldn’t be talked about as much as BotW or Skyward Sword generally because it’s perceived smaller and thus less notable. But I think there’s a ton of great game design and storytelling in it. Only thing I’m still not a fan of is the art style, similar feelings on the LA remake but that’s just me.
Overall my favorite is probably BotW. I know that’s a normie take and I really don’t care. Personally, I respect OoT more than I enjoy it (like with most of the N64 library these days) but it was my second Zelda game (we’ll get to the first) and obviously super important in video game history so it has its place. Actually feel similarly about Majora. Love everything about it *but* the actual structure and moment to moment gameplay.
Humorously enough, *Spirit Tracks* of all things was the first Zelda game I ever played, so I’ve always had a particular softness for it and also a sadness that it’s often just outright overlooked. Obviously having the context of the more essential titles under my belt I can understand why, but I still will argue that it’s a perfectly solid nice little charming DS game. I’ve also still yet to play Wind Waker itself which might be offensive but I’ve honestly been holding out for the hypothetical switch port, which by now maybe I should just boot up that GameCube copy already and get it over with… 😅

I played TP(HD) for the first time, left it half way as I felt it very "tunnel" based and weird, I guess it was because I had only played ALTTP, WWHD, BOTW, LA-remake which are more open.
I didn't want to leave a Zelda unfinished so got back at it again and tried ...it became one of my top Zelda games, almost sheared a tear, it left me wanting more "Zelda".
Also, I think A Link Between Worlds is not talked about enough, I finished it 2 months ago and it was awesome, strangely, it now makes me feel of ALTTP as a bit ...thined down.

One of my best memories of Legends of Zelda Link's Awakening. After I got the game, I remember skipping school and heading to an abandoned train track. I sat there on the tracks playing all day. Of course I took some lunch and some extra batteries. But that was a great day. And kids, I don't recommend skipping school just to play video games all day long.
the Wind Waker had one of the best stories, great visuals, and a charming personality in Link who showed so much emotion. To me that’ll always be my favorite.
Thought I would hate it and absolutely loved it. One of my fav games to finally beat

Is there any noticeable difference between the GC and Wii version of Twilight Princess? I own both versions and have beaten neither. I WANT to play it on the GC because I would like to avoid flailing around with the Wii nunchuk if possible.
It's so sad a ocarina of time remake from the 3ds is not on the switch with the starfox remake and Luigi's mansion 1 and 2... my favourite is a link to the past, up to this date is the zelda with more and better dungeons. The game has 12 full dungeons. Ocarina of time and links awakening are my 2-3 favourites. They have less dungeons than a link to the past but still excellent games for me. Botw didn't make it for me, great sandbox, great exploration and experience but that's not to me what a zelda game is + weapon durability. I hope they will improve this in botw... mostly the luck of dungeons of the first game.
Everything you said that was great about the gameboy version of Link’s Awakening applies to the Switch remaster. But the Switch version has much better controls (no longer having to switch equipment all the time to be able to use the feather). I played Link’s Awakening DX on my gameboy color back in the day and loved it. The switch version is just a slightly better version of it, so of course I love it, too!

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (1991) came out Two years before Link’s Awakening (1993), and that SNES epic is the one was the first “return to form”, that was the one to “get the formula” down before going to the GameBoy for Link’s Awakening which would have never been much of what it was At All without the First on SNES.😁

The original Zelda is the main reason I bought an NES back in the day, then Link to the Past came out when I was in college and remained my favorite game since. (To be fair, I had about a 20-25 year break in gaming after SNES/graduating college ie having bills) and just got back into gaming as my favorite pastime the past few years with the mini retro systems then Switch. Trying to work my way through the Zelda history I’ve missed out on with Switch online

Majoras Mask deserves to be at least one tier higher. No other Zelda game used emotions as a story telling device in such a way.
If you can't explore just because there is a count down you must be quite a bit sensitive to time pressure... However, there really are things to explore just like in OoT, though the world is smaller it has more details. Pro tip: Play the song of time backwards.
I used to love adventure of link, I don’t think it holds up to this day but it definitely introduced me to a lot of rpg mechanics

LOL 🤣 when I first played Ocarina Of Time, I got so frustrated with the Water Temple. After awhile playing the game, I got the hang of it and how to maneuver around in the Water Temple. So as of now, I can say, yes I like the Water Temple.

Open world in the modern HD Setting was cool but the plot literally took place 100 years before we start the actual gameplay. No hate but in my opinion BOTW just wasn't that great ! Hopefully Tears of the Kingdom lives up to the hype ! 🙏🏽

I mostly agree with your list but I think a link between worlds was excellent because I thought the puzzles were ramped up to 10. They had some amazing ideas with it and I loved it.
For me, the pinnacle of the series has always been A Link to the Past.
Also, Link’s Awakening came after A Link to the Past. It’s actually a direct sequel to the SNES classic.
To me, Twilight Princess is best of the 3D Zelda’s. Yes, even better than Ocarina of Time. I prefer the GameCube and WiiU versions. The Wii version was fine, but the controls held it back.

Twilight Princess is that game, it was like Ocarina of Time all over again. I obsessed over it from the day it was announced to the day it was released, and still to this day. I would even imagine I was Link playing out in my neighbourhood as a kid. This was an awesome video Shawn and just in time for Zelda's Anniversary too 🗡
