What? He didn't make this review in 2004! The game is from 2004! I remember waiting up and going to the midnight launch with my uni buddies.. we stayed up all night and I ended up failing my exam the next day.. I wish I could say it was worth it but.. it was a let down.
Designandrew He's talking about Mark's reviews in general, he's been doing reviews since 1999. Wow. When you look at it that way it's kind of freaky how fast time seems to fly in retrospect.
Things overlooked in Halo 2: 1. Play as the arbiter 2. Get to fight both the Elites and the Brutes 3. Has more levels than previous Halo. 4. Combined the atmosphere and brilliance of Halo: CE with the gameplay standards and ambitiousness of Halo 3
I'd have to honestly say one of my favorite parts about this game was just the great music throughout and the chilling sounding music in the menus and during the 5 minute long loading screen that made it seems like it as worth the epic wait.
imo 2 multiplayer, but story 3 is better but ONLY because of 2, halo 3 intro was WOW! got the chills from that, and will still get it if i start a new game i think!
I preferred Halo 1, but 2 was still a great game. Only things I didn't like were the vehicle changes (destructible), getting rid of old maps, changing the pistol and assault rifle and lastly the Covenant speaking English. (I always found it funny in Halo 1 when the grunts were the only aliens to speak English. Having the lowest class learn the "lesser" language.)
One of the best games out there no doubt. I keep my old Halo Edition XBox machine just to play Halo CE and Halo 2, yes the 360 can play them but the emulation mode can pull dirty tricks on the display.
kungfuchief they already got several games inc F2P titles like WOT that's only on 360 this year. Considering gold is not needed for it now to play f2p games online. The 360 market has grown in that regards of late. MS wants to keep the 360 alive for some time as its a good money maker still. And MS don't own or control 343 in the same way they did with Bungie. Now they do what they think it best. Sure MS don't mind more platform exclusive titles.. but considering all of em besides halo 2 is already on 360. Having em on the new console is the best idea. Sure they look better on xbox one then on 360.. Besides halo 2's new 2nd layer cover. The games will not look better pr say. Just have a higher resolution. Graphically. Noting has been done.
kungfuchief well we are in the F2P era. You might not give 2 fucks about it. But others do. And if they pay for it. It will keep growing. And like most MS is following the money. And no. Spartan Assault is an iOS port made by a 3th party. Non related and its now on PC, 360 and Xbox one. Not really tied to anything. And most Halo fans look past it like they did with Halo Wars. Tho Halo wars was not a bad co-op game.
kungfuchief If money is still lingering big at an old product. Abandoning it would be like shooting yourself in the foot. Sure they want people to upgrade. But many don't care about it yet. I have a PS4 and I don't even use it as I get the same games on PC for half the price and the PS4 exclusive titles that are worth more then 2 cents are all delayed. And Xbox one is not released in my region yet. So there are people that still lingers around em still. And will do for some time. Heck you did see how long it took PS2 to die. And Sony was smart enough to still support it. Mostly due to the Asian market. But they did not ignore it. And made more money on it after PS3 came then they did before at times.
Halo 2 at his time was a unbelievable. So far above anything on the ps2. The multi player alone... by the way the game doesn't look half bad even 10 years after the released.
I was a playstation kid but Halo eventually took first place with me.. It just has the perfect medly of things. Music, style, simplicity, multiplayer.. Easy to learn while difficult to master..
Funny that you should mention it being a rough draft of Halo 3 Mark, usually that's a silly criticism to make but in this case it's actually not because at first Halo 2 and 3 were meant to be the same game from the Cairo Station all the way to the last level of Halo 3, which is called Halo but because of so many time constraints and what-not, Bungie decided to strip the game in half so they could continue the other half in Halo 3 - whether they kept the assets from the development cycle is hard to say but to be fair that development decision was necessary because fitting in the elite's betrayal of the covenant and the brutes taking their places and all other things would be a bit too jarring if it's all crammed into one game. Although I really wished they kept the giant sentinals in Halo 3, I thought they were pretty badass enemies so it was a real shame to strip those from Halo 3.
I actually love that PC, XBox One AND PS4 are now really supporting indies and stuff like that. Innovation is found there. If one of them becomes a huge hit it'll receive more funding and basically ''grow''. I like those concepts a lot.
I have to agree with Mark.. about Halo ODST.. for myself it had amazing chilly atmosphere.. a story which wasn't force fed to you.. I remember feeling the isolation of the game.. the protagonist waking up after all the events had occured.. having to find out alone what happened to his squad.. During his exploration, one of the only companions he had were.. tapes he found of a woman trying to escape the city, during the conflict.. I remember actively seeking them out, not only to find out more of the incident.. but also just to hear a voice.. in such a desolate place after such a terrible event had occured.. This is just one part of what makes this game a true gem.. An amazing game.. an underrated part of a slightly over-hyped series..
I still own my original copy of halo 2. I miss playing it online. Doing super jumps, exploring outside the maps and doing glitches also playing in modded maps online such good times.
I'm not big into gaming online but this is one of the few games that kept me hooked for months! loved it and still have my copy. Pity about the servers, should go on forever lol
One of the best things I loved about this one is the EASTER EGGS, and I mean, man were they fun to glitch out of the map and find one of em'... Good times, good times xD.
Halo has always had the best of both worlds in my opinion. Outstanding single player campaign and outstanding multiplayer. It’s my game of choice for parties. 4 player splitscreen on the one screen, duking it out on blood gulch or midship. Good times
Say what you want about the halo (franchise) but this game revolutionized what we now know as "live" gaming. Yes PC's have been doing it for years but this game...god what memories. As an Xbox and PS fan this game (and the 3rd for sure) with its score, overall gameplay..and atmosphere...takes me back! Not a perfect game but when it came out....god was it the KING of multiplayer! I wish I knew how many hours I have played the game.
Hey Mark. Great review. There's a game on Steam for sale called "Legendary" and it's only $0.74 and I would love to see a review for it. Keep up the awesome work. Long live Truxton and Lord Karnage! PS. The world needs more Vectrex.
I've enjoyed this game for many years now, and you just explained more of the plot than I knew. Anyway, it is a great game. I especially enjoyed the co-op missions, and the music is cool. Excellent multiplayer. They could make a hundred of these. "Master Chief is too legit to stop killing aliens."
I absolutley LOVE halo, its the reason I bought an xbox not only the story and the characters of halo but also because its not as repetitive and overated and cliched as cod is. I'm just so happy halo exists because to be truthful halo is the game I play the most. Other wise id be playing gta 5 and gears of war
Halo 2 is my favorite Halo. Great game play, campaign, music, the best multiplayer maps with the best console online play of the time. We played this game for years lol good times
This review felt old school CGR. Great Job. I honestly can't play first person games or even watch videos of them, they make me feel crazy motion sick.
I can't wait for the rerelease of this game and I think it is a shame that they didn't carry on with the duel wielding in the later games as it was a cool little mechanic.
Looking forward to The Mater chief edition for Xbox one, Ive played Halo 3 and had no idea what was going on story wise because I didnt own an original Xbox so it will great that I can play the series from the very start :)
I picked up Floaty Space Ring 1 for £2.99 recently. It runs on my X Box 360. The graphics must have been cutting edge when it was first released and the gameplay is enjoyable and intense though some of the weaker alien enemies are annoying cannon fodder. A great FPS.
I love how Mark's Favorite one in the series is ODST and yet a shit ton of people hate that game. I like it, but not the majority, but hey, that's Mark for you!
I've bought this game just a few months ago on pc and the online was still up and running so people who wanna check out the online can go for the pc version or just wait on the master chief collection for xbox one
Gotta say excellent review! Better then usual I might add. Calling a rough draft of halo 3 is exactly what I would have said. Much like GTA: San Andreas is (in my opinion) the rough draft to GTA 5. Fun games regardless if your a fan-boy or not though.
I don't like shooters with a pad, but this was a very enjoyable campaign in split-screen co-op back then. I wouldn't have played it through on my own though. If it was reviewed as a 2-player game it might have fared better.
my favorite parts in halo 2 were dual wielding needlers (Which never happened in the other games) and hijacking regret's floaty chair thing to beat the crap out of him.
Before sequels had sequels. I'm looking at you Assassin's Creed. *Floaty* *Space* *Ring:* *Reach* and *Floaty* *Space* *Ring* *3:* *ODST* is by far the best of games of the Floaty Space Ring franchise. They both have a easy to follow plot and there is less references to, "The Little Shop of Horrors" which automatically makes them both better games because of it. Don't get me wrong I love Rick Moranis but let's face it, Gravemind is basically the _proto_ "That Wizard came from the moon!"
I played Halo 2 (PC) a few weeks ago and I got many achievements on my xbox 360. I think Games for Windows will close the multiplayer servers in July...
Love the Floaty Space Ring series. My favourite will always be the original, but 2 was also very good. I didn't like the turn the graphics took in and after 2 though. Too much sparkle.
Anyone remember this review? CGR Undertow - STAR WARS: KNIGHTS OF THE OLD REPUBLIC review for PC I sent to the show hoping that Mark would review it and he never did, plus it was the double pack for the PC so KOTOR 2 TSL never got reviewed! Please God have Mark at least review the sequel! :(
I played this game more than any other game in my life. Halo 2 was pretty much perfect. Well, except for Capture the Flag. That was the best on Halo 1 in the original Blood Gulch level. And the people on live with the plasma pistol. And the de-levelers and standbyers on live. I minored in Halo 2 xbox live in college.
Corporate greed indeed... So far, just about everything I've played or seen my family play on the PS4 just look like upscaled versions of the countless drudgery of shooters you can get on the PS3. Nothing unique or fun, just hyper-brown generic money churners. At least I can count on great games and having fun on my Wii U. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze was glorious. Along with Mario Kart 8. If only the PS4 had a great 3D platformer. At least the remastered Ratchet and Clank is coming.
My only complaint about the Halo 2 campaign is playing as Arbiter. Overall, it's great, in fact if I had a choice between Chief or Arbiter, I'd always pick Arbiter, but I am disappointed that you could kill elites as a spartan but not the other way around in the campaign. All Arbiter did was kill flood, heretic elites, and drone things. I don't remember killing one human in the campaign as Arbiter.
Actually it is still played. You just have to do a bunch of work to set-up Xlink-Kai or another alternative P2P multiplayer utility. (Your Xbox runs through your computer and through the application to get online)
That's the most I've laughed in a while at CGR reviews-- "floaty space ring". But damn, you are eating enemy fire.. has to be normal difficulty- or less ... if there was a less..
It's been 10 years and I still love Mark's reviews more than ever.
He's like fine wine.
Just gets better with age.
Designandrew Probably 10 years since he's watching Mark.
I know right! :D
More like cheese for me....
Fun fact: The last online match of Halo 2 went on for 16 days, I think.
lol 7 years ago
Halo 2 is easily my favorite Halo game.
Goddamn it's fricken Robert Santellan.
Things overlooked in Halo 2:
1. Play as the arbiter
2. Get to fight both the Elites and the Brutes
3. Has more levels than previous Halo.
4. Combined the atmosphere and brilliance of Halo: CE with the gameplay standards and ambitiousness of Halo 3
One of the best egoshooters ever made. If not the best.
.
Playing as the arbiter is overlooked? That is one of the most memorable things about Halo 2!
I'd have to honestly say one of my favorite parts about this game was just the great music throughout and the chilling sounding music in the menus and during the 5 minute long loading screen that made it seems like it as worth the epic wait.
Halo 2 has always been my favourite.

hell halo 2 is being remade and 3 ..... and4 ..........and one so yea halo out the ass

Red lemmon No, Halo CE and Halo 2 are receiving anniversary editions for the Master Chief collection Halo 3 and 4 are just being ported
yes but when I say re made I mean 1080p 60 fps and in halo 4 there was a lot of pop in and im sure it will be fixed eh1
Gotta agree, I loved ODST's story and atmosphere. The music is some of the best I've heard in a game.
I have Halo 2 for PC and freaking love it!
One of the best games out there no doubt. I keep my old Halo Edition XBox machine just to play Halo CE and Halo 2, yes the 360 can play them but the emulation mode can pull dirty tricks on the display.
I hope they bring the Anniversary Edition of Halo 1 & 2 to PC
kungfuchief Exclusive to windows vista of course is going too bomb..
Not for the 360 sadly as far as I know. There is a Halo 1 to 4 version coming to Xbox one. That includes the anniversary ed of Halo 2. Inc its MP.
kungfuchief

We need more old Xbox reviews
Best musical score of any media be it video game / cinematic... Period.
Dane DeMuth agreed
I am a fanboy of Halo.
But Metroid Prime is knocking on the door.
Up there. At least.
"Fans should DEFINATELY enjoy 'Floaty Space Ring 2': The Prequel to 'Floaty Space Ring 3'"
ROFL XD
Halo 2 at his time was a unbelievable. So far above anything on the ps2. The multi player alone... by the way the game doesn't look half bad even 10 years after the released.

Easy to learn while difficult to master..
Anyone else think Halo 2 is better than Halo 3?
I can't wait to jump back into halo 2 this november, I have so many good memories from that game.
I went to video games live earlier this year and absolutely loved it. I'd recommend it to any Video Game fan.

Really? That's a cool fact. I guess that was the reason for the cliffhanger ending in 2, huh?
Aesu That is the reason indeed! o/
God, I can't wait for Halo vs Street Fighter. It's gonna be so epic.
Master Chief was in a fighting game I believe. Or at the very least someone was wearing his suit in a Dead or Alive game if memory serves.
Oda Swifteye Dead or Alive 4
SuperJumpReviews That's the one!
Oda Swifteye :)
+SuperJumpReviews really?
Cant wait to replay this on the xbox one with the master chief collection.
Video game live is amazing. Saw them when they came in Vancouver.
I actually love that PC, XBox One AND PS4 are now really supporting indies and stuff like that. Innovation is found there. If one of them becomes a huge hit it'll receive more funding and basically ''grow''. I like those concepts a lot.
odst was my gvorite campaign as well extremely immersive the combination of music and atmophere and extremely likable characters was spot on

I actually went to a concert where they played the Halo music by an orchestra. It was beautiful
I still own my original copy of halo 2. I miss playing it online. Doing super jumps, exploring outside the maps and doing glitches also playing in modded maps online such good times.

"Why, it's the Arbiter." "You are no match for an Elite." All coming back to me now.
It's amazing how this game still looks great ten years later
Halo 2 is my favorite Halo. Great game play, campaign, music, the best multiplayer maps with the best console online play of the time. We played this game for years lol good times
"Halo ODST it's my favorite"
Based Lord Karnage ODST is the best Halo shame it's a short game
Halo 2 was a Pioneer in online gaming so much awesome memories
Glad I still have my physical copy. :)
ur not special
ur not either
Jedidiah Martin im super awesome
This review felt old school CGR. Great Job. I honestly can't play first person games or even watch videos of them, they make me feel crazy motion sick.
I also found Halo ODST to be my favorite as well.
beat this game so many times. Played co-op with my sis. Loved it so much I bought the pc version too
HELL YES VIDEO GAMES LIVE!!!!!!! Did you go to the one in LA during E3? It was pretty cool.
I can't wait for the rerelease of this game and I think it is a shame that they didn't carry on with the duel wielding in the later games as it was a cool little mechanic.
For me the greatest time in Halo 1 & 2 is playing the campaign with a friend.
Favorite game of all time. Can't wait for the remake.
Looking forward to The Mater chief edition for Xbox one, Ive played Halo 3 and had no idea what was going on story wise because I didnt own an original Xbox so it will great that I can play the series from the very start :)
Finally! A halo review where the critic doesn't kiss halo's ass for 8 minutes
@RunningZguy I agree, but due to the multiplayer. Floaty space ring 3: Orbital Drop Shock Trooper had the most enjoyable campaign for me.
Floaty Space Ring! Yes, and I think Driver should be renamed "1970's Movie Car Chase the Video Game."
Give this guy some support he has to have over 1 million
HALO 2 IS THE BEST IN THE SEARIES anybody agrees?
jonathan dcruze ce is a extremely close but the retarded difficulty on truth and reconciliation gives it a 2nd place...
Can't wait for the halo collection!
I picked up Floaty Space Ring 1 for £2.99 recently. It runs on my X Box 360. The graphics must have been cutting edge when it was first released and the gameplay is enjoyable and intense though some of the weaker alien enemies are annoying cannon fodder. A great FPS.
Anyone else agree that halo 2 is the best in the series?
Dabbled in the 1st player game (never finished it) but played the multiplayer for years.
I love how Mark's Favorite one in the series is ODST and yet a shit ton of people hate that game. I like it, but not the majority, but hey, that's Mark for you!
Looking at this gameplay, you can see this was what Time Splitters was competing with.
halo 2 had the best online multiplayer out of all the halo's imo. can't wait to play it online again in the anniversary release.
I never played that game, and now I know why the name Halo.
Thanks Mark =)
I've bought this game just a few months ago on pc and the online was still up and running so people who wanna check out the online can go for the pc version or just wait on the master chief collection for xbox one
Ordered it today?
Joe Gear I ordered my halo2 somewhere in 2013, but I believe it's still available somewhere
I ordered it but accidently hit ?
Joe Gear what do you mean?
Reach will always be my favourite in the series.
Gotta say excellent review! Better then usual I might add. Calling a rough draft of halo 3 is exactly what I would have said. Much like GTA: San Andreas is (in my opinion) the rough draft to GTA 5. Fun games regardless if your a fan-boy or not though.
The Dark Knight of the Halo series
@jeuroq or maybe that yeah
I don't like shooters with a pad, but this was a very enjoyable campaign in split-screen co-op back then. I wouldn't have played it through on my own though. If it was reviewed as a 2-player game it might have fared better.
Cant wait for the Master Chief Collection on Xbox One cause I never got a chance to play through Halo 1 and 2 only Halo 3,4, ODST, and Reach
"Floaty space ring"....... Sounds legit.
I can't wait for the master chief box set to come out for the one
my favorite parts in halo 2 were dual wielding needlers (Which never happened in the other games) and hijacking regret's floaty chair thing to beat the crap out of him.
Before sequels had sequels. I'm looking at you Assassin's Creed.
*Floaty* *Space* *Ring:* *Reach* and *Floaty* *Space* *Ring* *3:* *ODST* is by far the best of games of the Floaty Space Ring franchise. Don't get me wrong I love Rick Moranis but let's face it, Gravemind is basically the _proto_ "That Wizard came from the moon!"
Well we can play it again soon when halo master chief collection releases November 11 which contains halo 2 anniversary and the original multiplayer.
Mark, you should totally review Halo 4, too! :)
I played Halo 2 (PC) a few weeks ago and I got many achievements on my xbox 360. I think Games for Windows will close the multiplayer servers in July...
Halo is pure bliss.
It's been a decade already... OMG I feel... well you know.
this guy has the best reviews
who's ready ready for Floaty Space Ring 5: People Who Protect Stuff
I liked the game except for two things:
1)some of the areas were reused many many many times;
2)the cliffhanger ending.

If only the PS4 had a great 3D platformer. At least the remastered Ratchet and Clank is coming.
Floaty Space Ring 4: No More Floaty
My only complaint about the Halo 2 campaign is playing as Arbiter. Overall, it's great, in fact if I had a choice between Chief or Arbiter, I'd always pick Arbiter, but I am disappointed that you could kill elites as a spartan but not the other way around in the campaign. Lol all PS fanboys are like "killzone iz da best game evarrrrrrrr"we like "halo 2 bitches"
CGR, please upload your reviews that are exclusive to Dailymotion, like Cyberbots and Guardian Force!
halo 2, such an amazing game. still stands out.
I will hence forth and forever more refer to Halo as Floating Space Ring.
Actually it is still played.
You just have to do a bunch of work to set-up Xlink-Kai or another alternative P2P multiplayer utility.
(Your Xbox runs through your computer and through the application to get online)
" im still waiting for Halo vs Streetfighter" hahahah
the graphics were incredible for the time
You can still play this online on XBConnect.
Excellent franchise, Halo 3 is my favorite though.
ODST is my favorite out of the serese too
Halo 2 had the best plot of them all, well next to the first game of course.
Can still play Halo 2 online with the PC version!
private servers ??
AFAIK Bungie were supposed to patch it to use different servers than GameSpy (which is closing down), but I'm not sure about the ETA.
As far as i know you Halo 2 on PC is still active to date.
well you can do that on xbox too using xlink kai. it's one of the most played games there.
you need a fan program called project contingency to play halo 2 pc online
That's the most I've laughed in a while at CGR reviews-- "floaty space ring". But damn, you are eating enemy fire.. has to be normal difficulty- or less ... if there was a less..
Epic game and superb gameplay, still the best halo.
