      Agreed! Lennon was the master at coming up with the three-part harmonies. "This Boy" and "Nowhere Man" are the pinnacles of the form. "Because" seems somehow pro forma, and "Yes it is" is just weird.

      It’s no coincidence, Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys often says Rubber Soul (the album nowhere man was released on) was the inspiration for Pet Sounds. Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys then in turn inspired the Beatles to do Sgt. Peppers. The Beach Boys and the Beatles had a bit of a friendly rivalry going in those days.

    I had a Beatle-band myself years ago, always struggling hard to discover the specific real Beatle-harmonies, playing the songs over and over again until we found the very last details inside their great songs. I became adicted to it. Your break-ups are absolutely perfect. Even the great little very specific details in Nowhere Man where not lost on you.

    Is it just me or George´s vocals are always the most difficult ones?

    • @stephen212
      @stephen212 7 ปีที่แล้ว +93

      Yes, because it's more challenging for the ear to sing below the melody line.

    • @kirbygene
      @kirbygene 6 ปีที่แล้ว +61

      I've always thought exactly the same thing on their 3 part songs! John usually takes the melody, Paul the high colorful harmony above it, leaving George to sing the parts that are so hard to do. Just listen to "Because" as another example of this. And on their 2 part songs between just John and Paul it seems like John takes the most difficult lines, even more than I used to think. I always knew John sang those odd low harmonies under Paul, but now I'm discovering that he's also often jumping up to a falsetto line ABOVE McCartney. All 3 brilliant at vocal arrangements

    • @phatato
      @phatato 6 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      I feel like it perhaps might just seem that way because we've heard this song soooo much that the melody is ingrained in our heads and it's hard to think of anything else, but we should remember that this song was totally new even to them back when they recorded it, so it might not have been as difficult to think of something other than the melody. More importantly, it's the Beatles after all, they can harmonize like a motherfucker!

    • @surferbeto
      @surferbeto 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      It is often true. If you listen to Sergeant Peppers LHCB, you hear George singing a very tight low harmony that is subtle and has unexpected intervals. And Paul’s high harmony is mostly a single note. Pretty cool.

      George Martin was absolutely important when it came to constructing the Beatles harmonies. The lads had an ear for it, but it was only later that they became good enough to do most of it on their own. In 1965, I would suspect they were still relying on Martin's expertise quite a bit, although they probably had more control over it than in prior years.

    • @mrs.featherbottom5901
      @mrs.featherbottom5901 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, sure, I would also "suspect" that, but we are treading delicate ground here. This is sort of academia, this is history. So we can't mix up our opinions with what we actually know. Sorry, I get touchy about this stuff because I see a lot of beatles fans online just spew out "facts" and in the process also reviogorating myths and weird perspectives on the band.

    Dear Galeazzo, Thank you so much for your brilliant work. I have worked in radio for over 40 years and have produced and sung song parodies (and some original music) since the 70's. I did a parody based on Nowhere Man a few years back. I never could get George's part right. I ended up layering about 8 voice tracks and people here seemed to really like it, so it turned out ok I guess, but I always knew it wasn't quite right. Your video cleared up my mistakes so easily. I went back today and recut it with the CORRECT harmonies. Now there are only 3 vocal parts (though I did double track Paul's part since it just didn't quite punch enough in my mix). It is much simpler and sounds so much cleaner now, thanks to you. I am finally satisfied with it.
    I really enjoy what you do and respect your skills. You have an amazing ear for identifying harmonies. Your Bohemian Rhapsody videos totally blew me away. Freddie's harmonies are incredible but they are all over the place and almost counter intuitive. He goes up and down so much within individual parts. I can't imagine how you figured them all out.
    I'm now a big fan of your channel and have been sharing it with all my music and radio buddies. I know I will learn more from you, but with just this one lesson you have already helped me so much. Thank you again.

I just wanted to tell you I think your videos are amazing and very educational for someone like me, who loves to play guitar and sing! my friend and I have used a couple of your videos to work out our harmony for songs like "Help!" when we perform together.

    Sir, you are amazing. Brilliant harmonies. I am in awe each time I watch your vocal lessons.
    P. S. Your Dear Prudence guitar lesson was great. Do you have other instrumental lessons?

    Outstanding! When this epic song first came out on Rubber Soul - in those glorious days of 1965 - I learned it on the guitar but could never get the vocals right.

    Oh that is Too funny!! My wife and, daughter and I just finished watching the restored Yellow Submarine which is AMAZING, and we thought we'd work on Nowhere Man. I go here and lo and behold [or high and beheld] you have updated the harmony. You are an inspiration
    and a blessing!
    Thanks!

    You do a very good job dissecting the vocals on these . Good job. you're also a very good singer to be able to do all the parts.

    The musical complexities highlight what made the Beatles music such a departure from other rock and roll of the period and pre-dating their introduction to the world.
