      @@MauritsVeen : I've read the dutch wikipedia page about the Markermeer, (which is the grey overlayed area), and perhaps they did it because it is only 2 till 4 meters deep. So Ruben Janssen's answer "shallow waters" could be correct.
      (Ik vond het ook al vreemd).

    ATC was indeed nice, but I’m glad the pilot was even better :-) as I was on that plane. Two go around on a stormy night is not fun at all.

    I swear, Dutch people always seem to speak better English than we Americans do! (I know, that's not a very high bar...) Normally when I listen to these recordings from non-American ATC, I struggle to understand, but everything these pilots and controllers say (the English bits anyway) is so clear! They are easier for me to understand than a lot of American and UK controllers.

      I have an explanation for that. Dutch is not spoken in many parts of the world, so we have to learn as a trading nation very early. Besides that, Dutch is one of the most difficult languages in the world, difficult to learn and difficult vocalisations. That trains our vocal abbilities ad Dutch speaking people in The Netherlands, Belgium, The Dutch antilles and parts of South Africa. Therefore with other languages the vocalisations are never a problem. Dutch is almost only good audible when correct articulated. So we are used to that too. That makes learning and speaking other languages for us more easy.

      Patrick As a Dutchman I agree with that! We usually speak more then two or three languages. I live in the U.S and it's really hard to find someone speaking Dutch in my neck of the woods.

      I think the reason is this: Dutch people can't speak English as an mothertongue level, so they spoke slower than the Americans. And you can understand it better, cuz the americans is spoke english as fast as possible. And you can understand better the slower english, than the fast! (Btw I'm not american, moreover, I'm hungarian, but I think you guessed it, cuz my text got some grammatical mistakes! If you want to correct me, you can do it!)

      To be fair, I've found that the general standard in the UK is very good, standards are very high. You never hear 123.905 read back "twenty three niner" for example, as seems to be standard in the US. But for sure, the netherlands is no doubt the best I've heard!

      Also, their absolute dedication to speaking English, so every1 can understand, even when Dutch ATC is speaking to a Dutch plane, only switching to Dutch (partly) on the discrete frequency, when no1 else is there, who might need to know/understand, what theyre saying.

    Got to experience this not once but twice!! Both times were on NWA A-320's going into MSP. Actually, both landings were smooth as glass but it felt like the seatbelt would cut me in half when they hit the brakes!

      Jimbo McHooch it's quite normal for KLM pilots (and other Dutch Airliners like TUI and Transavia) to speak Dutch or some sentences in Dutch with the controllers.

      During Summer time, I will still say 'good evening' even if the sun is shining still rather brightly.
      And 'half past five' is 'half zes' in Dutch so I figure it's already evening. Yet others I talk to will insist it still is afternoon.

      +Evilroots Just that! It's a special frequency with less traffic and radio operations so emergency aircraft can talk to ATCs freely :)

      It's a hugeky late reaction but the origin of the discrete frequency is a result of the Bijlmer crash investigation. It was concluded that the many frequency changes added a significant workload for the pilots in an already high workload situation. Having a discrete frequency 'all the way' tries to reduce the workload. Simple and effective.

      At 9:30 he did, but it was hard to understand / cut off (and not in the subtitles). EHAM Arrival responded with "You're welcome"

    Kind of surprising that a jet with mechanical problems was routed directly over Amsterdam Centrum on the second landing attempt on 22. But still very cool event to replay, now that we know it's all okay.

      Well, they didn't call an emergency situation. So obviously the plane was not in distress. Then other factors come in play which balance to the 22 approach, like distance to next approach and possibly wind.

      At the moment, they still had enough of fuel and regular flight controls worked fine. Only the flaps, needed to slow down and retain control during landing, were not working properly.

      Just easier for Dutch pilot talking to Dutch ATC in their common native language. As Dutch people are educated well in English and consume a lot of subtitled English TV and internet/social media it's easy to switch between the two. No specific reason, just habit.

      The rule is the language of ATC is either the native language or English irrespective of where in the world the ATC centre is. In Beijing, you can speak Mandarin or English to the controller. In Mexico, it's Spanish or English. In Canada you should be able to speak English or French. In Amsterdam, a pilot of American Airlines, if they spoke Dutch, could speak in Dutch to the controllers.
      However, in places where people are very fluent in both languages, they often unconsciously switch between the two (usually to pick the most efficient words or phrases). Spanglish (mix of Spanish and English) or franglais (mixture of French and English) are common terms for the mixtures of those languages. The mixed languages can be used as long as both the pilots and the controllers are clearly understanding the other. In this case, they are both clearly communicating very well so they acted like adults and spoke in the combination. When the instructions were for the KLM pilot but the information was important for other pilots to know as well for situational awareness, speed, altitude, and direction information, the instructions were normally in English.

      There is not a rule that they have to speak english al time if they want they can say little words in dutch like good evening. Its easier in a emergency to speak your own language otherwise you wil make mistakes

    He only said technical, is that allowed? Because if for some reason this plane crashed only evidence might have left could be "Technical". And also I have seen too many Air Crash Investigations so these things bug me a lot.

      The comment is very old but information is up to date. When pilots are managing or dealing with their problem, there is no must for them to tell the problem with details in some cases. "aviate" is the first thing to do for them. "Navigate" is the second. The third thing is "communicate". If they are focused on aviating and/or navigating, it is ok to say just "technical".

      My guess is that any native speaker will talk so rapidly and pronounce rather poorly, it will be completely unintelligible even to foreigners who actually speak a bit of that particular language.
      One time, many years ago, I was chatting a bit with my brother who was sitting next to me in a restaurant during lunch time. A German girl asked us, rather curiously, 'what language we were speaking?' Knowing she was German, I was surprised that she couldn't at least recognize that we were speaking Dutch!
      If I listen to French speakers in movies, it's incredibly hard to follow most times.
      But one time I was watching a newscast by TF.1 and I was shocked that I could hear and understand every single word the news anchors said in French.

    Great job by both atc and pilots. But still it's a bit weird they offered Runway 22, which is Schiphol's shortest runway (2014 meters/6607 feet), to an aircraft they know is having flap problems an thus will be needing more runway length, as they are coming in at a higher speed then normal.

      Only if both pilot and ATC are from that same country.
      You will never hear a Dutch ATC talk like that to an American or Indian airlines pilot.

      They are probably so accustomed to using the aviation terminology in english, that it would be more effort and less clear to do it all differently.

      Dutch ATC protocol, partly because Tenerife created awareness how easy confusion could arise if common language is used.

    must be anoying for pilot and atc to keep saying half dutch half english sentences, my brain already melts if im on TS for a day talking english and i have to switch back to Dutch after.

      Rather late reply: it's not annoying at all. Only for English language listeners.
      The official flight language is English but when the situation becomes rather serious, most people will revert to their native language when they're certain that the other person has the same native language.

      Most Dutch people do this unconsciously, we can switch between English and Dutch in the same sentence without even noticing it ourselves lol.

    The controller assumes that the pilots speak Dutch because they work for KLM. That is a BAD ASSUMPTION. It is improper to depart from standard practice when controlling an international flight.

      Not too big an assumption. Dutch accents are quite distinctive, and a Dutch controller would pick up on that. The controller might even know that pilot personally - EHAM is KLM's home base after all. Besides, after switching to the discrete frequency other traffic listening in is no longer a factor.

      KLM is not like foreign companies who hire pilots who speak English only.
      Even though we like to pretend that we love speaking English, we also value native Dutch speakers.
      And a KLM pilot not being a native Dutch speaker is unheard of.
