- The small electric family crossover market battle has just intensified by the introduction of the facelifted Hyundai Kona Electric and the brand new Vauxhall Mokka e. Which of these two deserve your attention, and more importantly, your cash? We help you decide by putting the established, but revised, 39kWh Kona Electric up against the very latest, all-electric Vauxhall, the first Mokka to be powered by volts, and designed and engineered under PSA parentage. Good methodology at work here, compared to others - who still fell it necessary to take a pop at the Vauxhall history. What never gets mentioned for electric cars is how keeping warm - or cool - affects the battery/range.
Built-in storage never bothers me, as we all know that if you have cubby-holes available there are always going to be some who feel they have to fill them. Maybe try a conventional water bottle, because they do mostly fit the standard cup-holder.
I wouldn't say the SRI's prime market is the family, but we should remember that many families have done quite well over the years on far fewer facilities, and these days most kids will be fine with their phones or tablets with no worries about the battery going flat.
The Kona seems to be an exercise in robbing Peter to pay Paul, but the internal trim is pretty important and I never liked fixed, pop-up-style displays sticking up.
I'm on the brink of ordering the Mokka, as it's a driver's car - black interior, wrap-around dash, and it does have a back-to-the-womb feel. When test-driving it, I felt the dark interior really puts your focus on the view through the windscreen and side windows.
I'd go with the red one with the black upper cabin, as it seems to be the only option where the cabin side-stripe isn't a contrasting colour.
There will also be a zero tolerance policy on cheese, chocolate, and canned liquids....front or back!
I have a MOKKAe. SRI; disappointed you didn't mention the storage pocket in the backs of the front seats, the sliding arm rest, the assisted braking/regeneration switch on the central console or the heated front seats. I can store my water bottle easily in the holders in the console and my mobile fits well into the cubby hole below the dash. My grandson's seat has storage for Haribos on both sides or a cup in one side but I've had no problem fitting the Isofix connection and tether. I'm not keen about the deep boot although as you say the floor can be fitted higher but reduces space. I've had the car 7 months and although there was a drop off in range (190) over the winter it's back to full now; sometimes 205 miles
A really good video and I agree with your summing up of the two cars. I would go for the kona with the bigger battery.
Nice review. However dont forget that the Premium and Ultimate Kona with the 64KW battery also come with more features and a more powerful 200+bhp motor (Between 6.5 and 7.4 0-62 depending on which reviews you read...). I dont know if that also affects the driving feel. I just picked up my Kona Ultimate last week and i have found the drive very engaging. The styling argument is far to subjective. People criticised the older kona look for grey plastic arches making it look cheap, now they are body coloured it is better. Mokka lines look great but the styling is very try hard. I agree about the interior plastics, the silver console could be better.....The instrument cluster has had a full face lift along with the outside styling. Its way better than the previous one. Lastly (as this is turning into an essay....) The Kona Ultimate is only may cost a bit more (thanks to the governments recent changes to the grant GRRRRR) but you do get full leather, both electric seats, electric sunroof, heated vented seats and rear heated seats. Plus heads up display which is just great. One thing you didnt mention was app connection. Does the Mokka have this?
Range is everything, Kona 64 kwh vs Mokka 45 kwh usable. Difference is 42%, that is super important. I would never buy 39 kwh Kona. 64 kwh Kona has 204 hp.
No, it is not. It just has to be sufficient for your needs. Completely unnecessary to carry around a heavier and more expensive battery than you really need.
It’s not everything, but very useful.
@@whatever-xw8cw agree to a degree (ref cost) but when a heavier car, Kona, is much more efficient than the lighter one it seems weight isn’t so important. The 39kWh Kona is under 5% less efficient than it’s 64kWh sibling as well.

I think charging needs better explanation. Let’s be honest you can plug in a 350kW charger to either of them so why choose the 50/100kW example? Maximum charging rates are the key, and average charging rates 10-80% as per EV DATABASE. That way people can consider how future proof a car might be as the charging network updates and expands so……rapidly 🙄🙈. Actually the times are important for newbies I guess, and MPH charging is also a useful comparator for perspective buyers IMO.

My opinion is that for many many years we have become accustomed to a front grill, its embedded in the memory, so to accept a none grill car is difficult to accept.
At least the Vauxhall has maintained the grill image.
Thanks for vid. Both much smaller than the MG ZS EV and both cost £10k more. Mokka is a nice surprise from Vauxhall. Kia eniro better. Now comes the Kia EV6, Ioniq 5, Marvel R, Xpeng, Nio, Nissan Ariya, etc. Just wish we had an SUV made in the U.K.

@@markd17 Hi. Yea. When I ordered my ZS EV 3 years ago I was lucky enough to get £3500 government grant and £3500 discount by MG and a free charger. Bit different now. Just looked around the New Kia Nero EV. Looks really nice. Have fun.

i like the colour of centre console in the kona goes nice with the rest of the interior
The difference in PCP pricing at the moment pushed me towards the Mokka. The Mokka worked out at about £50 a month cheaper for the ultimate model, it looks better in my opinion and although it's a bit smaller that the Kona, it works fine for me.
Kona get 120 miles more a charge though

Okay to summarise you don't like the Kona, you like the Mokka. The Kona may not look sporty but its packed with good Tech and the Battery regeneration means you will charge the car less often. I have been driving the Kona recently and it does feel quicker (0-60 less than 8 sec). Again it depends on what model Kona you are reviewing, but I have been getting up to 250 miles range on 100% charge..
Erm, we declare the Kona the winner......
And the car we reviewed is the smaller battery variant. The 64kWh car will easily get 250 miles and outperform the Vauxhall. But that isn’t the car we tested....

@AutoEV 64kwh real world test seems to be pulling over 300 miles. Motorway around 260. Better than my ICE car lol. Quite impressive for a "budget" electric

In the back seat you bang your head in the roof if you lean backward against the headrest. Don't know if the same in the vauxhall mokka-e as in the opel mokka-e...it should be the same. I'm only 5,7 feet tall and this happens...not ok

My Ioniq 38 is also terrible in putting its moderate power down, a common situation with Ioniq and Kona then. Have you tried the Ioniq to see how that aspect compares, is one worse than the other?

The last Vauxhall car I bought set fire to itself. A 1989 Cavalier. I don’t think I will ever buy another Vauxhall.
I had a 1994 Cavalier 2.0CD as a demo when I worked for them. I really liked it. And I nearly bought a pristine 2.0 Manta GT/E that I took in p/x for a new Calibra SE6, but I sold it to a friend instead. Wish I hadn't now..... Anyway, thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.

I really don’t get this review, anyone going for Kona E will now get the 64kw, …we’re replacing our Ioniq and our search was simple, Cost to range and in the 250-300 mile range nothing comes anywhere close to the range to lease cost of the KonaE, (ie. within £100 pcm of Kona, okay Nero but that’s just a worse looking Kona) .. it’s that simple so all the other fuzzy stuff is for me pretty pointless, the car is a utility, but to have less than 250 miles range is pretty useless for anyone living outside big centres…
Do I like the Mokka, it’s okay, nice front end, a bit contrived, but it’s aimed at millennials who will put trim above range.
I don’t care about red trim, tho liked the Mustang MachE so fickle… these are not exciting sports cars, but getting to where you want without having to pray to the charging station gods has appeal :)
We looked at Ioniq 5 and EV6 and MachE and all priced way out of the market. Even ID3 was £100 more pcm than Kona 64kwh, go figure 🤷♂️
@Jon, no, please don't apologise. You've got your opinions, and we love that everyone has those and comes here to air them. Brilliant that you enjoy the channel, and sorry this one didn't tick the box for you. What we try to do with AutoEV is give our opinions. Our view when we started this was not to be the typical "wishy-washy" (as much as we hate the term) "influencer" style of channel afraid of giving our definitive opinion in case we weren't invited to the next car launch. We wanted to deliver our verdicts on what we felt was pertinent to the buyers of these cars. Hopefully we do that.
But of course, we have to accept that others see it differently, and we welcome those comments. The Kona is a great car, let down (we feel) by cheap interior plastics and styling that is denied to the EV buyer. I love the Mokka's adventurous nature and the fact that Vauxhall have trodden a different path, but of course, it won't appeal to everyone. Not should it.

@@AutoEV thanks for that, yeah being a fossil dinosaur 🦖 .. I just I find it hard to get excited about EVs but absolutely appreciate the utility of our Ioniq.. I 100% agree re the Hyundai interior materials, styling is okay, refresh helps, btw the ‘recycled’ plastics in Ioniq 5 feel way less quality than even the humble Ioniq, but its futuristic layout and space is great and was lovely to drive. I’d just make the point you can’t compare the Mokka as folks will likely buy the 64kwh Kona and that for me is still its Kona KSP, the rest I can live with, poor range less so, and where the Mokka needs more…
For the KonaE I’d say the ID3 and Nero still the main 250 mile + rivals.

@@AutoEV It's an B-Segment small-size car. Are you telling me this is intended to be a car moving 3-4 people with luggage throughout the country? This is an lifstyle-suv , focusing on urban or sub-urban areas with low distance traveling. I wouldn't even call the longer Kona an family SUV. I'm not sure how often you guys travel with "family" but personally I wouldn't consider anything below an Skoda ENYAQ iV an "family car".
Well the Kona is stopping construction, so Ioniq5 then. Mokka is PSA or whatever the conglomerate is called now which means French build quality and construction components. About the only interesting cars will be the ID5, non cupra seat el born ( I hope they make it), Volvo C40 and finally the Model Y
No, Kona still in production. Hyundai has stopped it's production only in Korea.
I see many people comment on the ride and sound issues with the kona. I just wanna say, coming from a 40k bmw. And testing both the kona, mokka, and id3. The kona is quiter and softer than all. The interior isn't quite as nice, it could easily have some softer plastics and an idrive styled system, since its 40k too. But yeah its definitely at least 10% quiter than a bmw m135i and a lot softer.

F1 = Drive without trace, Touring cars also bio fuels, clean and renewable and nowhere near the amount of toxic throwaway scrap that battery cars will dump every few years.
I find it so interesting that so many reviews contain so much subjective comments regarding the looks... why? I love how the new Kona looks, others may hate it. I think the Mokka looks cringe, again others may have other opinions. 🤷And that is okay, that's the reason we have such variety on the market. 👍

I had a Kona on loan when my leaf was in for an accident repair. I hated it. Fugly as sin imo. Clunky and felt cheap. I prefer the look of the Mokka

Thanks for the video, love the look of the face-lift Kona, looks like an angry Bull shark from the front. Looks are always subjective, the Moka looks way over styled and grotesque IMHO.
