Photographing the Aurora with the Sony A7IV and A7sIII

  • The Sony A7IV is a great Astrophotography camera but there is a bucket shot I have wanted to capture for years and to do it I am putting the A7iv to the test. Chasing the Aurora Borealis in Alaska is challenging under the best circumstances and the A7sIII and A7IV are a perfect cameras to film and photograph the Aurora but can I capture the aurora from inside a glacier ice cave?

    Great video....2 questions for you...what kind of lens you used, and what kind of Arcteryx jacket you wearing?

    • @JakeSloan
      @JakeSloan  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use an Arcteryx AR jacket and for the lens I used the Sony 24mm 1.4 GM on my a7siii for all the video shots and on the a7iv I used the Sony 20mm 1.8 G for all the photos.

    Thanks

    I’m going to Alaska this august and will be about 50 miles south of the Arctic Ocean off of the Dalton. Can you see the aura there? If so what were your camera settings? I have the Sony a6600, thanks!

    • @JakeSloan

      You will have a decent chance to catching some! I typically shoot 5-8 sec exposure at 800-1000 iso at f1.4 to f2.8

    Did record a video or a timelapse? I am trying to know the settings for a timelapse for northern lights.

    • @JakeSloan
      @JakeSloan  23 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I did both, for time-lapse I recommend 3-5sec interval aperture as open (low a number) as possible fix you focus manually, set white balance to 4000k or 4400k and then shutter speed can be 1-3 seconds and iso as low as possible but where it needs to be to get the right exposure

    Amazing work and persistence!! 🙏How big of a difference does A7s make compared to A7IV in terms of aurora filming?

    • @JakeSloan
      @JakeSloan  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The A7IV can film it ok if it is a bright and active Aurora but it has just a bit noisier image

      I don't think you understand what is happening in that moment, the fact that ANY camera can film in near zero light and capture this is incredible, this was filmed about iso 80,000 to 102,000. I'd love to see any other camera in the same price range do better. Good luck on your search for a camera that fits your wants
