I did order your book at the end of the last video. For reference...Nikon Z cameras have a “keep focus” menu with power down. If ON was selected, power up retains the last focus distance. If OFF was selected then infinity is selected with all Nikkor Z lenses...
A beefier version of the Z bracket will be welcomed. The current version works fine for lighter payloads, but is challenged by heavier payload, and more so with some wind as I discovered when we were at Crater Lake recently. Looking forward to the new version.
You definitely got some beautiful images there. Thank you for sharing. I can hardly imagine taking the time to get great images like this and also taking the time to document it like you do. Truly amazing work.
I learned from Eric Benedetti that when shooting wide angle, get a laser pointer and point it through the center to align the tracker with Polaris. No need to be perfect when doing a wide angle. Makes setting up the iOptron so much faster. You only need the exact precision when using focal lengths over 85mm
Man, this video is good. I got my first camera last week and I'm hooked. As being a huge star wars and astro fan I found out that I'm able to capture the milky way. I didn't knew this when I first bought my camera. This is awesome!!!
I have experienced That current MSM Z base is not really steady even I did not put gears over the max load capacity. I hope the new version will have a big improvement.
I just bought the Nitecore battery for my Canon R6 and unfortunately, it doesn't have the recharge outlet or the power indicator button on it. Still, I'm happy because it was about 1/3 of Canon's price. Thanks for the tip on these! Also, I will be in Mt Shasta next week and will try capturing the MW with my modded camera + the H-Alpha filter. May have to wait for your tutorial to process, though! 😉.
Hi Alyn, I just wanted to let you know that you can remove the internal bettery and run of off a portable system, like the Jackery explorer or a celestron powertank. Takes less than 2 minutes to do and iOptron will also provide you with a detailed instruction manual upon request.
Great video with a couple of surprise bonuses. 1) At 4:00 a meteor was captured, appearing to the right of the camera set up. 2) At 6:10 what looks like it could have been a bat flew into frame. Gorgeous finished shots.
you have a good camera for it! but yes you need to be in a dark area. the darker the better. also star trackers are amazing in what detail they allow you to get. the workflow gets more complex but it's worth it.
If you come back to the USA during the summer check out Mt Rainier in Washington state. I do many of my astrophotography up there. It is at over 5000 feet. Real dark.
A couple of points on the Skyguider Pro, as this is the tracker that I use: 1. I have the ipolar version which comes with a built in camera to aid polar alignment. It allows extremely accurate alignment and is a very nice feature. However, one huge miss for ioptron with this is that they only have a PC app, which means you have to carry a laptop with you to do the alignment. Why on Earth they don't have mobile apps I don't know. 2. The built in battery: it lasts for _ages_ and I have never been caught short with power. But in case you are, then you can always plug in a USB power bank and power it straight from there. So not a big deal.
Hey Brian, I am in the process of deciding which tracker to buy SGP or SWSA 2i Pro. I was leaning towards SGP. How is the tracker going for you? I heard that the counterweight arm movies on its own even when locked at a certain position. Do you have any other issues with the tracker that you faced?
Alyn just watched another astrophotography WVAstronomy vid and in it he was using your Move Shoot Move Z plate he was very pleased with it saying he would us it all the time
Alyn you've got it tough fella, I don't know how you cope. Those dark skies and core so high in the sky are fair making me jealous, I've not had darkness since the erse end of May and won't see it again till mid August. As always your images are belting.
& even at 1.8 I don’t have coma or fringing like he got. So each lens must be a bit better or on par with his… and don’t buy direct from the states get it on Amazon cause I had nothing but issues dealing with Robinson/ Sam Yang direct. They are a bunch of dicks when it comes down to customer service.
I have ownd one and that inifinity button is very helpful when the lens heater turns the fucus ring accidently while shooting on star tracker so just press it and good to go. lol And I really agree when wide open , That Chromatic aberration is insane through out the frame. But Lr can fix it as I have experienced.
Looking forward to your course on Star Trackers. I have no knowledge about them and would love to get some ideas before I got out and spend money on the wrong equipment.
I have the Star Adventurer, Polar Alignment in the Southern Hemisphere is a nightmare. The good thing about the iOptron Tracker is that you can get it with a built in iPolar alignment camera, perfect for the southern part of our planet. I wish SkyWatcher would do that as well. Although, the iPolar can be attached to the Star Adventurer it becomes tricky removing for camera mounting.
@@soumodiptodash6295 thanks🙏 i just sold my samyang 24mm f1.8 and bought the 20mm f1.8G but haven't hade the chance to try it out yet. To bright nights here in Southern Sweden 🙈 I was pleased with the samyang but wanted to get better photos so I changed to the 20mm sony 😉
The video footage of the MW is already better than many peoples' finished images and the twinkling stars and occasional shooting stars really make an amazing video. Sorry, I just couldn't get over this. What camera, lens, and settings are used for your video? Beautiful finished shots too BTW.
Hey Alyn - video is great, but quick request. Could you do these with non-astro-modified cameras? It would be most applicable to the majority of us, since I anticipate only a subset of followers/viewers will have modified cameras too. Thanks

A lot of good information. Thank you! I'll be looking forward to the new Z bracket. In one video several months ago you asked viewers to describe how they use their Z brackets, which i didnt do at the time. Since you're designing a new one, I'll put in my two cents. I use mine upside down, because I've found that I'd rather have the panning ability at the top. I placed an Arca plate on what is designed be the top, so that I can place that in any tripod head with an Arca clamp, most of which already have a panning function. Then I used a double-male screw to attach an Arca clamp on what is supposed to be the bottom, so that I can just attach my camera that always has an Arca plate or L-bracket on it. That gives me a panning function at the base (from the tripod head) and at the top. My suggestion is this. 1) Put bubble levels on both sides of the top and bottom plates, and/or in the sides of the plates. 2) Put degree markings on each side of plate with the panning dial, so the bracket can be used in either orientation. 3) Either include or make available a low profile, circular Arca clamp specifically designed for the Z and V brackets that can screw in without the need of a double-male screw. In fact, you could have a mark on the bottom of the plate, on the hinge end and by the panning locking knob, and have degree markings on the Arca clamp instead of the bottom of the plate.
I have a Sony a7iv and the same tracking mount. I've not had chance to shoot the milky way yet but planning a trip from my home in Chester to Anglesey in September to try it. I'll be young my 35mm f1.8 Sony lens. I'm too scared to get my a7iv astro modified though 😅. As always, your photos are incredible.
Batteries with built-in charging is genius. and love the green indicator for infinity on the lens as well. Good stuff. Ever do deep sky imaging through a telescope or even using dedicated astronomy cameras? Keep the good wok.
Can you share whereabouts this was? I know you said Mt Shasta, however I'm having a bit of a time figuring out where (think I roughly have it) and if there are any campgrounds near there. It's always a joy to catch up with your video's do you have that backpack with the rechargeable station built in? I have been thinking about investing in one.
Hi Alyn, very interesting new lens, thanks for your useful tips and the high quality content. I was wondering if I am the only one shocked by the fact that the sony a7iii doesn't have a "night/red-light" mode for its screen. On my old entry level canon dslr I could enjoy the night sky without being blown away by the brightness of the screen. Do you know if there is a reason for that or is just Sony not caring for this important detail (extremely easy to fix with a tiny firmware update). This missing feature is driving me crazy, I don't get why they wouldn't implement it. If you could give us your opinion on this it would maybe help me to find peace ;) Thanks a lot and clear skies!
I do'nt think Sony cares much about astrophotographers. We're such a small niche. They could implement longer shutter speeds than 30 seconds, they could add a timer to the screen when using bulb mode, they could allow shutterspeeds longer than 30 seconds in intervalometer mode, they could stop their stupid spatial algorithm from adding weird colours to the stars. Yeah, they don't care haha Screen brightness at -2 is OK at night.
Hi! Did you have a chance to record the night sky in real-time video with this Samyang 24mm 1.8? I am considering it or Sony 24 1.4, only for astro vlogs under the night sky. Thanks!
Interesting to see the Samayang in action, I thought it was interesting when it came out but I already had the Sony 20mm f/1.8, so I just stuck with that. It seems to be really nice for the price, though. Also nice to know that the infinity focus button works properly. I got the Samyang 135mm f/1.8 relatively recently, and while it's excellent for astrophotography and less than half the price of the Sony GM, for some reason the infinity focus is WAY off right out of the box for my copy of the lens. I also don't have the lens station, so I can't change it. It got great results with manual focusing though, even on the Omegon MiniTrack LX3, which is a completely manual wind-up tracker which is fantastic for wider angles but falls behind once you get past around 200mm or when your payload reaches 3-4 pounds. I definitely need a better tracker in the future, but I'm a bit torn on whether to jump for one of the cheaper star trackers or to save up for something like an HEQ5 for higher-quality tracking.
Hey mate, I too found my 135mm Samyang to exhibit the very same issue you had to deal with. However I was able to correct it and set it up without the lens station. How I managed this was to have focus peaking turned on first. Switch off the camera and turn it back while pressing the focus button (to have it turn on astro mode) then rotate the focus ring till my screen showed peak focus and then what you need to do is long press the focus hold button (3secs) and it now stores this new focus point as the infinity point - you will know its successful when the led light flashes and turns green. To test it switch it off and turn it back on to activate astro mode again and you should have it focussing to the point you preset it too.
@@AlynWallace yes that is a drawback of that spot, I usually go to military pass road. I’ve heard great things about those Nitecore batteries, congrats on that sponsor! I wish they made em for Nikon… This was a really nice vlog, your shots came out great and that HaRGB process is fire. Also agree on the trackers. In my opinion, the SGP is the one to get for hiking and portability, but the SWSA has the edge for deep space. Interestingly enough though Sky Watcher is set to have a price increase soon putting the pro pack more expensive than the SGP kit.
@@AlynWallace Okay! Is there any drop in filter drawers in the market? I looked up Astrohutech sony E mount filter drawers but they are for canon EF lens to sony bodies. I was hoping it you have come across anything for sony bodies to sony lens drop in filter system. or may be you could get one made at MSM ;)
Beautiful shots as always Alyn, you make it look so easy 😁 Is the Samyang 24 mm available for Canon systems or is there a converter mount required / available? Thanks in advance 👍
Samyang is only for Sony E mount. If you use mirrorless Canon, than you could use it with an Megadap or Techart adapter, but there is no 100% guarantee it will work.
Wont that infinity button on the lens move out of focus with different temperature? If it’s calibrated to infinity during a hot day then you use it in a cold night surely it will be out of focus?
Can you do a long shoot for hours and let the battery die, while the camera and battery saves your work just before dying? Like the original battery does. Or is all work just lost, because the battery just dies? 🤔 I hope the USB port will be a standard on original camera batteries soon. Om-1 doesn't come with a charger, and therefore needs to be charged in the camera. Really annoying.
@@rayganrambles I see I have been super curious about those do you need a H-alpha camera to use this additional I guess clip filter and can you point me in the right direction thank you
Unfortunately seems to be unit dependent! I’ve seen other videos where it was on par with the Sony 24GM and again others like his where there was coma present.
A prime lens with a maximum aperture of f/1.8 will be brighter at f/2.8 than a zoom lens at f/2.8. Less vignetting and better light transmission. f/2.8 is not the same on two lenses. For that you need to use T-stops not F-stops.

Also agree on the trackers. In my opinion, the SGP is the one to get for hiking and portability, but the SWSA has the edge for deep space. Interestingly enough though Sky Watcher is set to have a price increase soon putting the pro pack more expensive than the SGP kit.
Stunning Images and great Video........ as always :)
Hi alyn!! Do you take out the lens each time to insert the astronomik Ha filter for each frame? Also, how do you manage to secure the focus on stars ?
Yes unfortunately. Focus on a bright star using zoom on liv view
Beautiful shots as always Alyn, you make it look so easy 😁
Is the Samyang 24 mm available for Canon systems or is there a converter mount required / available?
Thanks in advance 👍
Samyang is only for Sony E mount. If you use mirrorless Canon, than you could use it with an Megadap or Techart adapter, but there is no 100% guarantee it will work.
Wont that infinity button on the lens move out of focus with different temperature? If it’s calibrated to infinity during a hot day then you use it in a cold night surely it will be out of focus?
Theoreticaly yes but I doubt it would be enough of a difference to notice. I'll find out in time.
Thanks!!
nice work buddy

Can you do a long shoot for hours and let the battery die, while the camera and battery saves your work just before dying? Like the original battery does. Or is all work just lost, because the battery just dies? 🤔
I hope the USB port will be a standard on original camera batteries soon. Om-1 doesn't come with a charger, and therefore needs to be charged in the camera. Really annoying.
I'm not sure sorry
So awesome...👌🏼
great vid mate
The Milky Way appears to be ablaze.
Full spectrum or H-alpha? I heard you at first say full spectrum and then in description you said H - alpha camera
It's an additional filter he can add to the sensor.
@@rayganrambles I see I have been super curious about those do you need a H-alpha camera to use this additional I guess clip filter and can you point me in the right direction thank you
My a7SIII is full spectrum. My a7IV is H-alpha. I will be making a video very soon about the pros and cons of each.
another cracking vlog mate shared on twitter
Cheers pal

Hey! Would love to see your videos in 4k
Meteor at @4:00
Looks like a big one too at 2:05 just next to the tripod.
Can’t wait for your signed book Alyn ✨🤩👏🏽
Are you having a cold, or is the mic just horrible quality? 🤔
I have sinus issues all year round
So it's very good but you have to stop down to 2.8...
Doesn't sound very good then.
