CalTrain Action on the San Francisco Peninsula Subdivision

  • The CalTrain commuter railroad runs along the former Southern Pacific Peninsula Corridor, between San Jose and San Fransisco. Running a semi-frequent schedule midday, and even more frequent service during peak hours, CalTrain action is some of the finest quantity commuter action you can on the West Coast.
As most know, CalTrain is currently undergoing a major transformation to the corridor. The ambitious electrification project has gained full speed, converting the diesel railroad into an electric one. With the line changing so quickly, I made it a priority to get some shots of the corridor before major changes occur in the coming months and years. In addition to the changes of the line, the EMD F40PH are also bidding a farewell to the line, after nearly 30 years of service.
In this video, I explored various parts of the Peninsula Corridor between San Fransisco and San Jose in the south. I focused on a few various places, such as the Brisbane/Bayshore, and the South San Francisco Area (with its 100+ year old signal bridge).
In addition, I was also lucky to catch JPBX 504, one of the two MP15DC switcher locomotives CalTrain has on the property. On this particular day, they headed light power to San Francisco, and brought back a dead set (JPBX 917) to the CEMOF facility in San Jose. Later, some switching ops are seen at the College Park station next to the CEMOF facility.
All locations listed in the video.

504's bell is amazing. If only all of Caltrain's Mechanical Bells were those and not the garbage EMD Steel Bells.

Will they get the Siemens chargers for the gallery car or nahhh?

They're electrifying from San Francisco to Tamien by 2024 (hopefully it doesn't get pushed back again), so they'll be using bi-level Stadler EMUs, except for the trains to Gilroy (and in future Salinas), where they will likely use just their MP36PHs, and/or maybe F40PHs nos. 920-22.

they are getting rid of the gallery cars due to them being 35 years old and they have a design that dates back to the 50's

I find that idea by Caltrain retarded because commuter trains services are purchasing sc 44 that pull old bi level coaches and Caltrain should have some for their electric fleet and for future stations they might plan in the future. I’m not saying they should do it but that’s just my opinion

Yes, one of the reasons why this section of CAHSR will be ridiculously slow

Bases have been installed on almost all of the trackage, and poles are coming along.
