The weirdest thing about this fear response is how it only feels terrible when you think about it. A panic or anxiety attack feels like the end of the world, but in an actual dangerous situation, you hardly even feel it. Like you said...it gives tunnel vision and you don't even think. I always found it weird how I would have these intense panic attacks, and feared those feelings because of how they caused me to catastrophize and spiral into darker and darker thoughts. Yet, one time I accidently kicked in a wasp nest, and got chased by the entire hive. I felt like a ghost. It was the coolest and most surreal experience, terrifying yes, but in the moment there were no spiraling thoughts. Just "RUN." And I practically flew across the field, I felt like Usain Bolt.

I've suffered from generalized anxiety disorder all my life. I've learned to relax through breathing, humming, meditating, going on walks, self-soothing, etc. However, I don't always do this and then my anxiety returns. I'm a highly-sensitive person and tend to be hyper-aware of my body sensations, so it's especially important for me to calm down and try to be more of an observer. I used to suffer from severe social anxiety too but I got better thanks to useful techniques like on Emma 's videos, also I recommend you to check Dr Thomas Richard online therapy for SA, It helped me great deal.

It gave me a smile on my face realising that the fight flight freeze reaction that i so often 'suffer' from is actually a sweet loving (but often overactive and exagurated ) reaction of my brain to keep me alive: it wants me strongly to live! That makes ME to want to live, because its MY brain! I'll just need the skills and insights to relax and soothen her. Maybe some might think: duhh! But for me that was a new insight, kind of an epiphany. I finally blew up emotionally towards my mom today after years of repression. Felt like a huge weight lifted off my body. I’ve had gut & anxiety issues for forever, & I could feel the anxiety and gut feelings strongly when venting. Makes sense why my repressed emotions effect my gut etc. I cut her off and am going to focus on not repressing my emotions as well as being myself without fear of being judged etc, I’ve repressed that for forever too.
I have wasted so many decades on anxiety and depression to end up where I am right now. Thanks for offering these free courses and I am willing to listen and follow your recommendations. I hope I end up in a better place after they are done. :)
I have complex-ptsd, major depression, anxiety and ocd. I also have social anxiety and that's not counting all my other health issues. It's a daily struggle.

From experience, The instant cure for anxiety is to understand the fact that there are infinite amount of possible outcomes in this universe and our brain only thinks of a handful . A bad outcome can become the means of a good outcome in the future. Just like that a good outcome can become the means of a bad outcome. For example, you lost your job (bad thing). But then you got a new job which is better ( bad thing led to a good outcome.) It's an endless cycle. So just go with the flow and don't think about it . 😄 Goodluck.

The amount of anxiety I have is crazy rn. I notice that my anxiety tends to be around social and relationship situations as I journal through this series. I've discovered that when you are experiencing anxiety, it is most important to deal with the anxiety FFF's first before you can work through your deeper emotional issues otherwise it feels as though I'm spinning my wheels while stuck in a rut(its okay cause I'm not going to hurt myself but the rut gets bigger due to uncertainty or wheels spinning). I think for anxious ppl trying to learn emotional skills. This video is probably the most important since I've been trying to force myself to face my emotions when I feel triggered. Not the best, I'm learning that it's not a distraction to go do something that calms your anxiety. It's important in order to access your higher functioning part of your brain which allows for rational and reasoning. Brute force with my emotions is what I've been doing and it's not the best solution. I need to take care of myself first
Many cannot get help because when these people talk a lot they are labeled as crazy. Everyone is busy engaging in providing physical needs and the daily routine even in care centres to keep things in order. These patients are usually ignored. Most cases are not serious and they can be help. The covid makes things even worse. The sufferers usually just have to endure. Hope more people are aware of this type of problems and can at least help those in their own family and be more patient and understanding regarding their condition. You helped me a lot through this single video. A bout more than my half lifetime, more than 30 years, I don’t know what happened. When I speaking public, when I date a girl, I was freezing so many times, I can’t make a sound, say a word. I lose so many opportunities like jobs ,girls, I still unmarried. I blamed me so many times. I analyzed me so many times. There is no results, no improvement. Today at this lonely night in someplace in this world, at this moment I seemly find the answer. I must say thank you with my poor English.

My fight or flight comes with extreme fear and doom, mainly from panic attacks starting at 12yrs old. Being 40 now they are not any less scary. This is wonderful that you’re providing help for those of us with anxiety. Mine is mostly under control with medication as it was truly debilitating with agoraphobia, but I still get anxiety with lightheadedness when driving on a fwy, especially if I’m unfamiliar with the route. I did a course decades ago which still helps as I was instructed to put thumb and index finger together that relates to when I listened to calming dialogue. I think I need CBT and should pursue that. One time when on the fwy, I got so lightheaded that I thought I was going to pass out but then it peaked and quickly went away. Scary!

This video is fascinating in the information it provides about common signs of anxiety and why our brain reacts in the way it does. Personally, I found that coffee is a major trigger for producing panic attacks and extreme anxiety. In the future, I'm going to try to cut down quite a bit in my coffee consumption.
Me too, coffee kickstarts my fight response and affects my digestion and nerves. It sends me into a hypo mode where my heart & breathing rate are rapid. I’m much better on decaf or tea :)
I have been practising the Mindfulness of Breathing technique th-cam.com/users/postUgkxIIDVgnLN8pF_fPOyoZ1nTjbLvvZcib6r as taught in this CD for about 2 years having read about it in Paramananda's Change Your Mind book and taken a real liking to it. However at times I struggle to remain focused on the breathing and thought that at such times this guided version might suit me. So after two years I finally decided to buy it! The first 7'24 of Track 1 of the CD is a body relaxtion which I do not use: I don't like body relaxation techniques and I find 27' just a little too long for meditation. The remaining 20' of gentle, guided meditation helps me tremendously to relax and stay focused. I find him's voice very soothing and whilst he is present to guide you through the 4 stages of the meditation, his presence is not intrusive or distracting. For the past two years I have tried to follow this technique as best I can with gentle meditation music despite music not being recommended. Having used this CD a couple of times I think I will try from now on to adopt a new routine of no music and just this CD as I find it so helpful. I realise now that the music really is distracting and I have enjoyed listening to the ambient sounds around me which I am normally unaware of. I can not comment on the other 2 tracks of Metta or Walking Meditation as I bought the CD solely to help me with the Mindfulness of Breathing and it does just that - very effectively. In my opinion this CD is money very well spent as it will guide you through a thoroughly useful and beneficial meditation technique and I don't think you can put a price on that.
As a child, I was punished for making bad decisions. I grew in to an intelligent, caring, talented, well spoken adult. However, it's only now (and I am in my 50s) that I have realised that I have spent my entire adult life with a fear of making bad decisions. My brain makes up thoughts and beliefs to prevent me from getting in to situations where I have to make a 'big' decision. A few years ago, I had been dating a girl for four years when I inherited some money. I had been saving to buy my first home for years and I was in a great financial position. But I needed to choose a location and a house. I was fairly sure that my job would be moving from 25 miles away to nearer to my girlfriend's home, where I was living at the time, but a voice in my head told me to keep saving until I knew for certain if my job would be moving. I obeyed it, and just looked online at houses for sale in both locations, each time wondering 'what if it turns out to be in the 'wrong' location?' I ended up priced out of the market and my girlfriend dumped me, making me homeless. It's only since then that I have realised I have had a problem for my whole adult life. I dated a lady in my 30s, who I really should have married. It was only after we finished that I realised what a mistake I had made by not asking her to marry me. I can look back rationally at when I received my inheritance now, and cannot believe or understand what must have been going through my head. I'm sure this isn't the first time in my life when I have looked back and wondered 'what was I thinking', but Emma sums it up perfectly in this video when she says that 'your thinking brain shuts down when you're highly emotional'. At the thought of having to make a 'big' decision, I subconsciously get emotional, thinking that I will be punished if I get it wrong, so don't make a decision at all. I was incredibly indecisive with both my long-term partners. I wonder how they put up with me. I went to test drive cars, liked them, but then still had to 'go away to think about it' before I would buy one. I seem to wait until I have no choice before I make a decision. There are numerous times in my life when I realise that I want something that I could have had, but can't any more. I should have married either of my long-term girlfriends, I could have easily bought a house when I inherited, when interest rates were low, but didn't. Now I'm homeless, so having to try to buy one. House prices are 50% higher, mortgage rates have quadrupled. I'm priced out of the market where I would like to buy (and if I had been able to think rationally when I inherited, I would have realised where I should have bought). I've never considered myself to have anxiety. I've researched it, so that I could help others manage theirs, but never thought that what I was reading applied to me. All of what I read and watched implied that people think 'this is an anxiety inducing situation, I think I'll run away'. Sure, I get a bit anxious if I have to speak in a meeting, but I don't 'run away'. My triggers are more subtle. When I knew my job may be moving, I knew that 'my job' wouldn't exist any more and that I would be given a different one. My counterpart's job at the company taking us over became available, on higher pay than I was on, but I still didn't apply for it, as I was anxious about the change of location (even though in my head, I knew I would have to move anyway). I liked the culture of my old workplace, feared the change, saw the takeover as a threat instead of an opportunity and resisted the move, even though I had no power to. I've always been indecisive and and overthinker. I bite and pick my fingernails and the skin of my fingers and thumbs. I fidget a lot, but I wouldn't have described myself as being 'anxious'. I'm one of those people who others probably think that I'm good at everything. I'm intelligent, talented, logical, well spoken, good at sport etc. But I know that if I won't be good at something, I don't even try, for fear of embarrassing myself. I wouldn't dance at a party, try to draw a picture, get involved in a conversation about something I know nothing about etc. I so wish that I had realised that I had a problem years ago. Every day, I break down as I think how my life could have been if I had known about my anxiety even 5 years ago. I've ruined my ex-girlfriend's dreams of having children, after she invested so much in to our relationship. I've cost myself a fortune financially, because of the 'cognitive distortions' my anxiety caused. I find it really hard to understand how I've gone from being able to buy a lovely home for my girlfriend and me to live in so that we could marry and start a family, to being homeless and priced out of them market within 5 years.

The freeze response can also slow your heart rate significantly, especially in little kids. I read a case where a toddler was a victim of attempted murder - cut with a knife from ear to ear. Her mother died, and she was found 12 hours later, Alive. Her body slowed her heart enough that she didn’t bleed out, a result of freeze response
totally on my to-do list. Section 22 is on the skill of cognitive defusion, which applies to intrusive thoughts, but I will make a specific video about it

I feel discouraged and disconnected from the human race when every video about how to cope with anxiety recommends taking a walk. I cannot walk, I’m surrounded by snow and I can’t leave the house even if I tried to wheel outside for some fresh air. I’ll keep on looking for help, but thanks anyway. One of my biggest challenges is catastrophizing. Anxiety rushes in automatically, my face gets flushed, then the thoughts of FUD arise. All happens so quickly. Never used to be this way, so strange. It's like fear meets uncertainty which lowers confidence. In reality, the situation is nothing. I’m not sure how to use this skill for my anxiety. I wake up with such intense anxiety. I am aware of my anxiety before my eyes are even open. I lie there for sometimes over an hour to try to deal with my anxiety to no avail. I end up getting up and taking Xanax, but I feel like that’s just a cover up. I need to deal with what’s going on; I just don’t know how.
@@amandamiles4590 Then I think what you are experiencing could be depression, not anxiety. I have suffered from depression a number of times in my life but I also suffer anxiety. Some of the feelings/symptoms are similar but they are two different things. People respond differently to treatment so you need to find what works for you. The best thing for me was exercise and routine, mixed with healthy living. Minimize stress. When it was really bad I saw a good doctor and used antidepressants but came off them gradually when I knew I could cope. Talking to people who care helps alot too. Best of luck with it. It does get better.

The weirdest thing about this fear response is how it only feels terrible when you think about it. A panic or anxiety attack feels like the end of the world, but in an actual dangerous situation, you hardly even feel it.
Like you said...it gives tunnel vision and you don't even think. I always found it weird how I would have these intense panic attacks, and feared those feelings because of how they caused me to catastrophize and spiral into darker and darker thoughts.
Yet, one time I accidently kicked in a wasp nest, and got chased by the entire hive. I felt like a ghost. It was the coolest and most surreal experience, terrifying yes, but in the moment there were no spiraling thoughts. Just "RUN." And I practically flew across the field, I felt like Usain Bolt.

I've suffered from generalized anxiety disorder all my life. I've learned to relax through breathing, humming, meditating, going on walks, self-soothing, etc. However, I don't always do this and then my anxiety returns. I'm a highly-sensitive person and tend to be hyper-aware of my body sensations, so it's especially important for me to calm down and try to be more of an observer. It gave me a smile on my face realising that the fight flight freeze reaction that i so often 'suffer' from is actually a sweet loving (but often overactive and exagurated ) reaction of my brain to keep me alive: it wants me strongly to live! That makes ME to want to live, because its MY brain! I'll just need the skills and insights to relax and soothen her. Maybe some might think: duhh! But for me that was a new insight, kind of an epiphany. I find that accepting anxiety instead of fighting anxiety can reduce the intensity of what I am feeling.

I finally blew up emotionally towards my mom today after years of repression. Felt like a huge weight lifted off my body. I’ve had gut & anxiety issues for forever, & I could feel the anxiety and gut feelings strongly when venting. Makes sense why my repressed emotions effect my gut etc. I cut her off and am going to focus on not repressing my emotions as well as being myself without fear of being judged etc, I’ve repressed that for forever too.

From experience, The instant cure for anxiety is to understand the fact that there are infinite amount of possible outcomes in this universe and our brain only thinks of a handful . A bad outcome can become the means of a good outcome in the future. Just like that a good outcome can become the means of a bad outcome. For example, you lost your job (bad thing). The amount of anxiety I have is crazy rn. I notice that my anxiety tends to be around social and relationship situations as I journal through this series. I've discovered that when you are experiencing anxiety, it is most important to deal with the anxiety FFF's first before you can work through your deeper emotional issues otherwise it feels as though I'm spinning my wheels while stuck in a rut(its okay cause I'm not going to hurt myself but the rut gets bigger due to uncertainty or wheels spinning). I think for anxious ppl trying to learn emotional skills. This video is probably the most important since I've been trying to force myself to face my emotions when I feel triggered. Not the best, I'm learning that it's not a distraction to go do something that calms your anxiety. It's important in order to access your higher functioning part of your brain which allows for rational and reasoning. Brute force with my emotions is what I've been doing and it's not the best solution. I need to take care of myself first

Many cannot get help because when these people talk a lot they are labeled as crazy. Everyone is busy engaging in providing physical needs and the daily routine even in care centres to keep things in order. These patients are usually ignored. Most cases are not serious and they can be help. The covid makes things even worse. The sufferers usually just have to endure. Hope more people are aware of this type of problems and can at least help those in their own family and be more patient and understanding regarding their condition. This is wonderful that you’re providing help for those of us with anxiety. Mine is mostly under control with medication as it was truly debilitating with agoraphobia, but I still get anxiety with lightheadedness when driving on a fwy, especially if I’m unfamiliar with the route. I did a course decades ago which still helps as I was instructed to put thumb and index finger together that relates to when I listened to calming dialogue. I think I need CBT and should pursue that. One time when on the fwy, I got so lightheaded that I thought I was going to pass out but then it peaked and quickly went away. Scary!

This video is fascinating in the information it provides about common signs of anxiety and why our brain reacts in the way it does. Personally, I found that coffee is a major trigger for producing panic attacks and extreme anxiety. In the future, I'm going to try to cut down quite a bit in my coffee consumption.
Me too, coffee kickstarts my fight response and affects my digestion and nerves. It sends me into a hypo mode where my heart & breathing rate are rapid. I’m much better on decaf or tea :)

I have been practising the Mindfulness of Breathing technique th-cam.com/users/postUgkxIIDVgnLN8pF_fPOyoZ1nTjbLvvZcib6r as taught in this CD for about 2 years having read about it in Paramananda's Change Your Mind book and taken a real liking to it. However at times I struggle to remain focused on the breathing and thought that at such times this guided version might suit me. So after two years I finally decided to buy it! The first 7'24 of Track 1 of the CD is a body relaxtion which I do not use: I don't like body relaxation techniques and I find 27' just a little too long for meditation. The remaining 20' of gentle, guided meditation helps me tremendously to relax and stay focused. I find him's voice very soothing and whilst he is present to guide you through the 4 stages of the meditation, his presence is not intrusive or distracting. For the past two years I have tried to follow this technique as best I can with gentle meditation music despite music not being recommended. Having used this CD a couple of times I think I will try from now on to adopt a new routine of no music and just this CD as I find it so helpful. I realise now that the music really is distracting and I have enjoyed listening to the ambient sounds around me which I am normally unaware of. I can not comment on the other 2 tracks of Metta or Walking Meditation as I bought the CD solely to help me with the Mindfulness of Breathing and it does just that - very effectively. In my opinion this CD is money very well spent as it will guide you through a thoroughly useful and beneficial meditation technique and I don't think you can put a price on that.
As a child, I was punished for making bad decisions. I grew in to an intelligent, caring, talented, well spoken adult. However, it's only now (and I am in my 50s) that I have realised that I have spent my entire adult life with a fear of making bad decisions. My brain makes up thoughts and beliefs to prevent me from getting in to situations where I have to make a 'big' decision.
A few years ago, I had been dating a girl for four years when I inherited some money. I had been saving to buy my first home for years and I was in a great financial position. But I needed to choose a location and a house. I was fairly sure that my job would be moving from 25 miles away to nearer to my girlfriend's home, where I was living at the time, but a voice in my head told me to keep saving until I knew for certain if my job would be moving. I obeyed it, and just looked online at houses for sale in both locations, each time wondering 'what if it turns out to be in the 'wrong' location?'
I ended up priced out of the market and my girlfriend dumped me, making me homeless. It's only since then that I have realised I have had a problem for my whole adult life. I dated a lady in my 30s, who I really should have married. It was only after we finished that I realised what a mistake I had made by not asking her to marry me.
I can look back rationally at when I received my inheritance now, and cannot believe or understand what must have been going through my head. I'm sure this isn't the first time in my life when I have looked back and wondered 'what was I thinking', but Emma sums it up perfectly in this video when she says that 'your thinking brain shuts down when you're highly emotional'. At the thought of having to make a 'big' decision, I subconsciously get emotional, thinking that I will be punished if I get it wrong, so don't make a decision at all.
I was incredibly indecisive with both my long-term partners. I wonder how they put up with me. I went to test drive cars, liked them, but then still had to 'go away to think about it' before I would buy one. I seem to wait until I have no choice before I make a decision.
There are numerous times in my life when I realise that I want something that I could have had, but can't any more. I should have married either of my long-term girlfriends, I could have easily bought a house when I inherited, when interest rates were low, but didn't. Now I'm homeless, so having to try to buy one. House prices are 50% higher, mortgage rates have quadrupled. I'm priced out of the market where I would like to buy (and if I had been able to think rationally when I inherited, I would have realised where I should have bought).
I've never considered myself to have anxiety. I've researched it, so that I could help others manage theirs, but never thought that what I was reading applied to me. All of what I read and watched implied that people think 'this is an anxiety inducing situation, I think I'll run away'. Sure, I get a bit anxious if I have to speak in a meeting, but I don't 'run away'. My triggers are more subtle. When I knew my job may be moving, I knew that 'my job' wouldn't exist any more and that I would be given a different one. My counterpart's job at the company taking us over became available, on higher pay than I was on, but I still didn't apply for it, as I was anxious about the change of location (even though in my head, I knew I would have to move anyway). I liked the culture of my old workplace, feared the change, saw the takeover as a threat instead of an opportunity and resisted the move, even though I had no power to.
I've always been indecisive and and overthinker. I bite and pick my fingernails and the skin of my fingers and thumbs. I fidget a lot, but I wouldn't have described myself as being 'anxious'. I'm one of those people who others probably think that I'm good at everything. I'm intelligent, talented, logical, well spoken, good at sport etc. But I know that if I won't be good at something, I don't even try, for fear of embarrassing myself. I wouldn't dance at a party, try to draw a picture, get involved in a conversation about something I know nothing about etc.
I so wish that I had realised that I had a problem years ago. Every day, I break down as I think how my life could have been if I had known about my anxiety even 5 years ago. I've ruined my ex-girlfriend's dreams of having children, after she invested so much in to our relationship. I've cost myself a fortune financially, because of the 'cognitive distortions' my anxiety caused. I find it really hard to understand how I've gone from being able to buy a lovely home for my girlfriend and me to live in so that we could marry and start a family, to being homeless and priced out of them market within 5 years.

Surely if your going to doctors to get help for all these years he is not doing his job so where is there is one to go or are people not listening the lady is giving very good advice please listen it's for your own self wish this help was out there years ago keep well

Andy, Reduce negative thoughts to have a healthier life with a simple practice. Your breath is directly related to your mind [brain] causing negative thoughts-anxiety. For a relaxed life sit on a chair, back straight, eyes closed, be as still as possible and observe the sensations of your incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for around 5-10-15 minutes or more. Don’t fight with your thoughts. Slowly the mind will relax. No deep inhalation-exhalation needed. Anytime of the day or night before sleep sit or lie down on your back and observe your breath. Stillness brings internal peace. Like me, make this a lifetime daily habit to have a good life. Best wishes Shyaaam Sir. -Counsellor.

The freeze response can also slow your heart rate significantly, especially in little kids. I read a case where a toddler was a victim of attempted murder - cut with a knife from ear to ear. Her mother died, and she was found 12 hours later, Alive. Her body slowed her heart enough that she didn’t bleed out, a result of freeze response

I feel discouraged and disconnected from the human race when every video about how to cope with anxiety recommends taking a walk. I cannot walk, I’m surrounded by snow and I can’t leave the house even if I tried to wheel outside for some fresh air. I’ll keep on looking for help, but thanks anyway. One of my biggest challenges is catastrophizing. Anxiety rushes in automatically, my face gets flushed, then the thoughts of FUD arise. All happens so quickly. Never used to be this way, so strange. It's like fear meets uncertainty which lowers confidence. In reality, the situation is nothing. So far, catastrophizing has proven false 100% of the time, yet I fall for it emotionally nearly every time.

Ohhhh that explains why colors would suddenly look brighter for me whenever I had panic attacks in my teens, it's like someone turned up the contrast to my vision
I’m not sure how to use this skill for my anxiety. I wake up with such intense anxiety. I am aware of my anxiety before my eyes are even open. I lie there for sometimes over an hour to try to deal with my anxiety to no avail. I end up getting up and taking Xanax, but I feel like that’s just a cover up. I need to deal with what’s going on; I just don’t know how.

@@bluemm2852 Yes, I have went through a trauma and loss recently.
@@amandamiles4590 Then I think what you are experiencing could be depression, not anxiety. I have suffered from depression a number of times in my life but I also suffer anxiety. Some of the feelings/symptoms are similar but they are two different things.
People respond differently to treatment so you need to find what works for you. The best thing for me was exercise and routine, mixed with healthy living. Minimize stress.
When it was really bad I saw a good doctor and used antidepressants but came off them gradually when I knew I could cope. Talking to people who care helps alot too. Best of luck with it. It does get better.
I’m the same way. Everyday is the same Anxiety. Feel scared all the time, I always think I’m not normal by the way I feel.
Trying to deal with it...is the creation of tension .. please let your energy flow...let your River run...no dams...just open plains over which the energy can run out over... please walk...do not fight your nature
