Hi Clint, Sweet bike! I've been able to get my Transition Spur down to 22 lbs 15 oz. It's a 120mm/120mm suspension like yours and that includes powermeter (4iii), bottle cage, and Garmin mount. Key differences that got my weight down are: 9point8 150mm dropper (436g); Rockshox SID Ultimate fork (1352g); Lightcarbon wheels with DTSwiss 180 hubs and CXRay spokes (1246g); Wren stem (54g); Mt. Zoom bar (149g); Garbaruk cassette (349g); and Mixed 7D saddle (105g; I love this saddle, BTW). The bottle cage is a no-name carbon cage. The sub 23 lb weight is with 4oz of sealant per tire, which is what Stans recommends. I actually run with much more than that. So, in honesty, the practical weight of my bike is a bit over 23 lbs. Cheers!
Wow that is World Cup light!
What did the mods cost you? Thanks.
@@alb4619 I didn't mod a full bike. I started with the frame and built it up. The total cost to me, after discounts through my race shop, was about $8,000. Full price would be about $10K. I couldn't get more of a discount through my shop since some of the parts are not ones that they can acquire at wholesale such as the wheels, bar, stem, and saddle. (Regarding the saddle, it's from Aliexpress and cost only $27. It's the deal of the century. I have it on all of my bikes and my wife's bikes.) I'm really happy with this franken-bike. It combines downcountry geometry with xc race weight.
@@TomCollins-c4hexactly, cost to weight ratio is sky high
@@alb4619 These weren't really "mods." I built the bike from the frame up. Nothing was stock. I'd estimate that the total cost to me was around $6,000, including all of the shop discounts I get. The retail price would probably be more like $8,500.
Thanks for this series. I just bought a discounted Trek TopFuel 9.7 and rode it for the first time yesterday and immediately started a list to lighten it and make it a better bike. Sad ~$4k can't buy a bike with everything you need but the dropper post was the #1 issue.
At what cost though?
What differences do you notice between the Fox and Ohlins fork (besides weight)?
The Ohlins provides a bit better support so you feel like you’re floating above the terrain more.
Glad to see your back on the Ray in front. Great tire.
man, i tried and tried to snag one of these a couple years back.. hot item sold out in all corners of the webs..
i ended up getting a Spot Ryve 115, and although that is a great downcountry bike that most ppl have never heard of, i still like the slightly tougher nature of the Spur. it's a beast of a tiny bike! i will be looking for the new color frames after a few months they should start popping up for sale.
Hey Clint. Thanks for the post. If you pull off your shock any chance you could measure the inner width of the lower shock mount and post it? I think I have a frame out of spec.
Why is the true weight considered without pedals? Don’t you ride with petals?
I've found that lateral wheel stiffness pairs well with stiffer, more capable frames, and conversely lighter, flexier XC frames pair well with more compliant wheels (up to a point). And then lighter, lower traction XC tires pair best with flexier wheels and frames as that compliance improves tire traction on XC tires. While a stiffer, slacker frame work noticeably better with stiffer wheels with higher grip tires, because the slacker the fork is the more side loading goes into the wheels in tires through turns.
Hello @Clint, I am a huge fan of your advices because every time I followed your recommendations I made a good purchases. I have a Yt izzo and I love my bike but I am ready to move foward. i am trying to decide in between Epic evo 8 and Spur, performance is nice but I would trade some performance for some capability, which one would you recommend since you rode both? Thanks
Those bikes are really similar. Honestly, it comes down to your access to the bike. That is, how do you feel about the bike shop that sells each of those bikes?.I like the gloss paint job and the swat box on the epic. But the ride of the transition is hard to beat. Still the best bike I’ve ever had, closely followed by my Niner RKT9.
@@ClintGibbs thanks so much for your reply!!!
I’m amazed you are able to get a full squish so light. My old hardtail CC weighed in at 28lbs.
Light. Durable. Cheap. Pick 2. I definitely chose the first 2 on this project.
My medium Spur w/ pedals is 23.7lbs or so and I’ve put several thousand miles on it in the CO Rockies w/o issues. In my case, it fails the “cheap” dimension, costing a fair bit of cash to get these kinds of weight while maintaining reliability/durability.
What about Berd spokes and Kenda tires. Seems Kenda has very light tires.
nevegal Pro is a great xc tire in 2.35
I’m looking at. A spur as my only mountain bike to take on local trails and race some xc. Think that’s a good choice?
Most definitely
Hey everybody, I’m new to biking replacing my tires on my bike ended out buying some tubeless tires question is can you still use tubes in them?
Yes. Always good to carry a spare tube anyway with you when you are running to Bliss in case a puncture does not seal up
The Dream Build improves 😺
You need a silver seat post binder.
Is that with tires full of stans juice?
😎nice ride, its lighter than my hardtail
I surprised you're not running 2.4 wide tires on i30mm rims. A 2.4 Maxxis Rekon Race front paired with a 2.4 Aspen ST rear on those i9 rims at 18-20psi is the tire combo I would be wanting. Or a 2.4 Vittoria Mezcal front with a 2.4 Peyote rear might be good.
He is trying different things out this isn't his ultimate setup yet.
Cool. You changed it from a trail bike to an XC bike!
The spur is both. That’s what makes it such a great bike.
Which brand crank boots?
Race Face
Funny how people say to weight a bike without pedals for a “true weight”. A bike needs pedals so it should be weighed with pedals for a “true weight”. Nice build though.
Not everyone uses the same pedals so therefore bike weight without pedals.
Hi Clint
How do you “get away” with all the bikes and parts, etc ? I believe you’re married (wink). Also, I have a gen 1 supercal and wondering what more travel might do for me. Think I am 100 front and 60 rear travel. I train and race the FLE 30 milers. I’d love your input.
More travel is just going to allow you to feel fresher throughout the race and also allow you to sit more often which saves the legs. When I used to compare hardtails to full suspension, I always felt faster on the hard tail but was actually faster than the full suspension. Adding more travel with lightweight wheels, keeping the bike about the same weight, can only help.
I have a gen 1 Supercaliber. Was running it with a 100mm SID Ultimate SL but I found it a little “twitchy” with the gen 1’s steep head tube angle. I switched out the fork to a Fox 34 stepcast with 110mm travel, so stiffer fork with better small bump sensitivity on roots etc and slackens the head angle by 1/2 a degree. Its a lot more confidence inspiring in descents & tech stuff but I do notice The 100 or so grams extra up front going uphill. I did try 120mm of travel but it jacked up the front too much for me. Hope that helps.
It's incredible that Specialize have just brought out the Chisel Alloy that weighs just 26lb and only costs £2500. I think we'll see bug changes in the bike industry over the next 3 years.
I suspect they will raise the price of the alloy frame so they can justify raising the price of the carbon epics. That's what companies do
@@timjacobsen7315The carbon epics are not selling at their current price, thats why the chisel exists. I think they will hold prices for now.
@timjacobsen7315 quite possibly, but let's hope the industry is changing for the better. I never thought I would see the day an alloy frame weighed that amount.
Now you just have to change the color of the stickers of your fork
So you are running narrower width mtb rims than your gravel bike? Makes sense…
I run Stan's Grail CB7 carbon wheels on my gravel bike which are 21.6mm internal. The Stan's Podiums are 23mm internal, the I-9's are 30mm. Still deciding on which wheelset will be my everyday mtb wheelset.
@@ClintGibbs what happened to the Zipp wheels on your gravel bike? Those are 25mm.
I sold that bike to get this one:

Why is the true weight considered without pedals? Don’t you ride with petals?
I have a friend named Carlos who tows me around the trails.
"ride with petals"!!! Is this a resurgence of flower power lol.
I would guess that different pedals have different weights, and the pedal type is a personal choice based on what your last bike had, etc. so taking it out of the calculation makes some sense to me
