Snap Dave. This week has been Strat fix time for me too. After 23 years of faithful faultless service I had to adjust the truss-rod of my Strat for the first time since it left the factory. Shell 1996 MIJ Anniversay The slotted nut was still covered in buffing polish when I took the neck off … The relief had climbed to 0.016”. It wasn't bad to play but the extra height was affecting tuning on the fretted notes. More than it normally should. A quarter turn dropped it to 0.010 !!! Overshot. Just less than one eight of a turn got it to 0.012/0.013 Curiously the intonation needed a fair bit attention too. Not something I had expected as it had been fine up till last summer. She spent about 7 months stored upright in a gig bag, in a friend's house - stable environment, while I moved house. All's well now but I was surprised at how much she'd shifted compared to the previous 22 years ...
I just took a guitar _just like this one @ __8:55_ w/floppy springs and unclipped strings, and shoved it into one of those standard stompbox pedal housings; I call it the Eludium Q35 Non-Electronic String Modulator...
I like to use bullet strings on my Strat. They sound great. I’ve had troubles with the ball ends. They want to get stuck when I change them. Especially the G, B and high E.
Cheers Dave for showing what to do with a strat-trem. I had no idea how to setup those springs at the rear. My partscaster will get the treatment now and i will actually retreive that trembar i had never used. good stuff. please feel free to make more jokes by the way.
Great videos Dave, hope this strat gets to shine the way it deserves to. Keep up the good work putting a smile on our face and educating us at the same time. ✌🤙👍
It does but at the point of tension, which for a guitar is at the saddle, tuner peg, or locking nut. So, that is to say a fixed point. When a wire breaks from stretching, its generally always going to be at a fixed point. Guitar strings have pretty good ductility, so there aint much deformation if any when you stretch a string during tuning. I find that string breaks happen when the strings lose their softness and become brittle due to oxidation.
Nut Sauce brand works for me. Yes, thats what its called. It is expensive for the little tube you get but it has the tiny applicator tip and a little tiny drop goes a long way.. I apply to each nut slot before new strings are laid in the slot.
With regards to the string & pickup heights...are these being set to a 'standard' height?. I guess every player like these to be set as they like them?

I used to play Earnie’s for years, had to change them really often (twice and sometimes three times the week for three guitars) they seem to rust quite quickly wearing down the frets really fast. I changed to elixirs for my jazz guitar and Gibson Pure Nickel for my Reissues and it saves me a lot money. The strings are stable, have a long durability, don’t rust as fast and sound amazing.
Hey Dave (or anyone who knows what they're doing and would like to comment), got a question about the rule - or suggestion... - about having Fender bridge saddles parallel to the deck. Fully agree and understand the reasoning on 6 saddle guitars. On a three saddle bridge however, they have to tilt down at the outsides (strings 1 & 6) don't they? Just to retain the "arc" of the fingerboard radius?
On my Tele, with brass saddles, they are all parallel, despite the guitar having a very curved ('65) neck. As for the radius thing, I don't give a flying fart. Maybe I did so more with the old steel, multi-slotted screw-looking saddles, cos the strings don't slip onto the grubscrews on those. Maybe I didn't.
