In the past 6 months, I’ve come to the realization after 62 years on this earth, that people are inconsiderate butt-faces, especially on this side of the Ambassador bridge (American). Dave I really have learned quite a lot from you man! Please don’t lose faith in the decent folks who really enjoy you and your expertise!
After 40 years of owning and playing I've learned how to keep my guitars playable. However, watching your brilliant videos it's easy to get the feeling that 90% of the world's guitars are set-up like a cheese grater.
Henry Rollins used to tell a story about he and a friend who sometimes hung out with a well- known homeless person in Washington DC who was referred to as "Crazy Paul", aka "Sky King". Henry said that despite Paul being bipolar, perhaps schizophrenic, he would occasionally say samething that struck them as incredibly profound. After the guy died, a newspaper obituary encapsulated the backstory of the string of tragedies that led to his life unraveling: in the space of a week or so, Paul's mom died unexpectedly, he discovered that his business partner had been not only embezzling from their restaurants, leaving nothing but debts, but had been having an affair with his fiance, and there was something else that went bad as well, and poor Paul had a breakdown. Bad shit can happen to anyone.
Dave, I watch you to see the beautiful work you do on guitars, but your non-guitar comments about actually seeing your fellow human was beautiful. Peace to you Brother.

Micro Mesh with the foam pad that comes with the metal polish kit version is a great way to polish the rets after level/crown, as well. As for your back, try lying on your back and pull your knees up to your chest as far as you can. Also, try tucking your chin in, while lowering it as far as you can, and that helps loosen the muscles in the lower back. They adaptively shorten when you injure your back. When you lie down, put your heels down, and stretch your spine out. This loosens up the vertebrae and that helps the discs to heal.

Dave, the message you put out in this video really hit home for me. We do have to be good to one another because you just never know who your talking to and what that person has been through up to the point when you talked with them. I had spent a couple days visiting my ailing father several months back and we got the news that he only had weeks if not days left. I went to work literally right after hearing that news. I worked an overnight shift managing a team of support agents for a diabetic insulin pump. So I had to take over a call from one of my people because they asked for a manager. The bottom line was this lady wanted us to do something that I just could not approve in good conscience. Just because she was barking so much didnt mean we could break protocol. Then she went where I never expected her to go. She says "you have no idea what I'm going through and if I die it's going to be your fault" she screamed a few more things about my family and I was just stunned she would bring my family into it. I really didnt know how to respond to her because we had just been given the news about my father, which part of his issues were from diabetes. Anyway, I was frozen for probably a good 2 minutes just speechless. Needless to say her situation did not qualify for what she wanted me to do and I denied her request got her off the phone and probably for the first time in over 20 years I had to leave work due to that incident. It really messed me up. We have since lost my father but when I left work that day I went and spent more time with him. You just never know what that person you are speaking to has just been through, as Dave says we really do need to be good to one another. It would really kill me if I knew I did what lady did to me, to someone else. So I'm always doing my best to treat everyone good. Your a good man Dave keep up the great work!i
What Dave said regarding not trying this stuff (if you're a rookie like myself) on a guitar you like are wise words. Squiers and other low end guitars can be found all day long for under $100 and are perfect for learning guitar repair and set up. If I don't screw up I have a better playing guitar that I can give away to a kid who wants a guitar. If I do screw it up at least I'll have some extra parts laying around.
dave it's interesting to know what you know and how you do it and i like your stories you should do them more often cause i like watching your show/movie !!!!
Great. BTW, I also have a back that can give me trouble as well as knees and ankles if I stand too long on concrete. About 15 years ago I started wearing, on recommendation, ECCO shoes which have alleviated much of the problem and , while not cheap, last foe years.

When I worked at Gloucester and Isabella, (right off Jarvis in the middle of rainbow village) I had a group of college students come into my office. They were doing a study of homeless people in T.O., and what made them homeless. I asked them if they ever considered doing a study of what they were doing before they became homeless. They said they might consider it, but wondered why I would ask that. I told them it had been my experience after talking to some of them, that they may have been pretty successful in the business world, until the drugs got them. Are you putting the capo right on the fret wire at the 1st? Are you doing the same with your finger @ 17? Or are you checking them in a playing position close to the fret? Does it make a difference? Thanks!
I recently bought a used squire. I’m putting a guitar fetish Brian May setup on it. They make pickups that sound like the ones he used along with a multi switch pick guard that allows for phase switching as well as pickup selection. Wish me luck! I don’t get why people make rude comments, but they seem to thrive on it. I try to be constructive with the comments I leave, and yelling at the sky seems to help some days! Now, if you read my comment here, and have any tips on doing what I am going to attempt, I would appreciate it. That’s how we learn! Can’t we just be good to each other? We should! That’s what it should be about! My wife was listening to an interview on NPR, where they were talking to the top Rabbi of the Jewish Faith. When they asked him what all the rules and laws in the Hebrew a Bible was about, if he could narrow down the 500 or so laws they are supposed to follow, he said it all means to be good to each other! My Mother taught me that to hate someone means you wish that person was dead. To hate a thing is different. But you can say you dislike it and it would mean the same thing.
This was pretty useful, actually, I believe that I'm dealing with the same issue with my H-S-S Squier Strat. I am wholly incapable of addressing the fret issues, unfortunately, although at least it looks like I know the problem, which is a good part of the battle..
I was thinking, don't go there, the other day when I was radiusing a new fret board 'how flat is flat'? Is there any significance to the 4 thou measurement? Thanks.
You told us not to do this on a guitar we like if we've never done it and didn't have the tools,so, how did you learn? Did you practice on cheap stuff, how many guitars did it take to learn? Who taught you?
I've pretty much ruined one of my guitars. Not so sure I can salvage the frets. Went too low in many areas. Might have to keep this hunk of wood to learn how to refret, in the future.
That's unfortunate. Does the neck (finger/fretboard) straighten out? If so it might be worth a refret. If it's only a couple of frets it might only need those replaced, not the whole lot. Given some builders use skinny & short "mandolin" style frets, unless the frets are ground to the same level as the fretboard (just tangs or a hint of fret surviving) it might still be levelable. Probably not worth doing if it'll only need a refret next time anyway.
@@MrCheesywaffles I think one of my mistakes is getting a not-so-leveled, neck level, and I did not make the neck straight before I went to town. I need a better level checker. Possibly a better sanding beam. I might actually have a tiny bit of life left in them all to get it levelled but you might be right about it not being worth it, since it probably does need a refret. And I do plan on learning how to refret, hopefully. I just have to learn levelling first. Lol I tend to learn things the hard way. Ive also considered just turning it into a slide guitar, but that seems to easy of a way out. I plan on just putting in time and learning how to level and refret. Turning it into slide could be my last option, if all else fails. Lol
Leem Flanginator yeah right if you take them when you need them and not every day you're fine and number three work well if you don't abuse them and used to be able to go right into the drugstore and buy them right off the shelf in Canada so that's why I was wondering if it was still possible but I didn't really think it was I just wanted to know thank you guys God bless you

Anyone get part 2 of this? My Strat is doing the same thing. I need part 2!
Darn you sky!
Do you usually prefer using a radius sanding block over a leveling beam?
Would certain people say what they say from their computer if they were actually physically in the same room?
I had to turn up my headphones all the way, and there's no doubt about it! That is definitely 330 grit--not 320! I have a finely scratchy ear! hahaha
F the trolls Dave. I did some research and discovered that Trolls are born without balls. True fact!
Anybody know where part II of this video is? I can't seem to find it.
Thanks.
16:29 What grit r u using for that fret levelling?
You told us not to do this on a guitar we like if we've never done it and didn't have the tools,so, how did you learn? Did you practice on cheap stuff, how many guitars did it take to learn? Who taught you?
We're did u learn to work
On guitars? Did u learn from some one u know .i would love to learn.
Lol
I tend to learn things the hard way.
Ive also considered just turning it into a slide guitar, but that seems to easy of a way out. I plan on just putting in time and learning how to level and refret. Turning it into slide could be my last option, if all else fails. Lol
Dave can you still buy Codeine number 3 over the counter in Canada?
No
Opiates are great if you need them, for a while anyway. I can see why they are tightly controlled in most places given how addictive they are.
Leem Flanginator yeah right if you take them when you need them and not every day you're fine and number three work well if you don't abuse them and used to be able to go right into the drugstore and buy them right off the shelf in Canada so that's why I was wondering if it was still possible but I didn't really think it was I just wanted to know thank you guys God bless you
As you speak, I’m on my back in bed waiting for my Lyrica and Zanax and CBD oil to kick in and give some relief from a very bad Sciatic Nerve problem. Rock on 🤘
