In most versions of this song, the male vocals make the Phantom sound smooth and suave. Marko makes him sound like the disturbed and unsettling man the Phantom actually is.
Same for me. But in the end its everybodys individual taste... For me tarjas angelic voice always had some kind of sadness in it that made songs very special I love Floor and her more powerful approach - I enjoy when she does the old nightwish stuff - but its a quite different feeling for me
Tarja got me into Nightwish, AND got me to appreciate classical music as a whole. I didn't think it could be improved upon, I was one of those people who wasn't very into Annette... and then Floor showed up. I love her so much. It was like an old friend coming back from the dead.
Marko has got to be the best phantom of all time. Not only is he acting, leaning into the "darkness" and the almost madness of it, throwing in that rock grit, but he's also SIMULTANEOUSLY PLAYING AN INSTRUMENT!

Tarja truly is a diva in the truest, most complimentary sense of the word--she's effortlessly regal and charismatic and just *commanding* on stage. One of my favorite performers ever! A couple things to note: 1. She was actually sick with the flu and a throat infection during this show! If you watch more songs from this concert you'll notice she has a lot of different stage outfits, and part of the reason is because she still had a fever and kept sweating through her costumes. As if she wasn't impressive enough! 2. This is Tarja from 15 years ago, and she's still today working hard to perfect and expand her vocal skills. She's amazingly versatile, and in addition to still putting out rock/metal albums, she also gives lots of classical concerts that I would definitely recommend if you're interested in hearing her go for that fully operatic style. She's even done folk covers of a few songs with the Finnish bluegrass band Steve N Seagulls, and you wouldn't expect her to be able to blend with them nearly as well as she does! 3. You mentioned talking about voice pairing in a few videos, and in that case I have a recommendation for you: Within Temptation's performance of Somewhere with Anneke van Giersbergen from the Black Symphony show has been dubbed the best duet ever by many in the youtube realm and is a really wonderful example of complimentary voices that I think you'd really enjoy checking out, especially because Sharon (WT's singer) is self-taught, while Anneke has classical training like Tarja.
She is so special. Tarja and nightwish were special. When i see the videos of that concert i feel some sort of pain because we all know this is the end of an era, and they fired her after that concert, with a letter... i guess she don't know that she will be fired during the concert. that is why it gives me pain to watch her like that. what a lost...
Tarja's operatic voice makes a dramatic effect that suits this song. Especially when the performance is also visually very operatic, much more dramatic than what most performances of this musical song usually are. Andrew Lloyd Webber himself has told in an interview, that this is one of his favorite performances of this theme. Marco's phantom sure is haunting.
Ah this is some awesome chaos at the end. Tarja was absolutely nightwish in this era. They all seem to be cool with each other again which is awesome & she's doing her own stuff so good for her
Yes, Tarja does an amazing Dead Boy's Poem, Everdream and of course Walking in the Air. The operatic style makes an appearance in many of her songs. This was her final performance with NW, she got fired immediately after this show. (Hence the name of the DVD: End of an Era)

Her voice together with Marko's voice was a great combination, and yesss she has a very warm and dark timbre, it was even stronger during earlier years and I love it. "Deep Silent Complete" or "Swanheart" from the From Wishes to Eternity concert are magical, the concert was recorded in 2000, so very early Nightwish history, anything from that concert would be amazing!!!
Marko is the best Phantom every. He adds the dark and sinister side to the character that opera singers just cannot achieve. With Marko, you feel the diabolical and controlling character missing in the normal singer. And you gotta LOVE that beard!

Tarja and this iteration of Nightwish was no doubt special. None of us were aware of the behind the scenes drama and that this was her last performance with Nightwish. Which made her departure so jarring. They were so perfect as constituted and it we would have to wait until 2012 to get that magic back again. Very glad you enjoyed it.

Tarja is fantastic. It's very different style compared to Floor (and Anette), and that makes their music much more diverse. This particular show is pure magic, sadly things didn't end well at the time, but now she has a great solo career and Nightwish has Floor so it did work out in the end for both sides.
I adore Tarja very much. She is one of my favorite singers. I love it when she sings arias like mein herr marquis or when she sings symphonic metal and mixes her chest voice with her head voice, or when she dares to do beltings in her solo career. I’m not finished this reaction yet, I’m about 7:30 in… But this is already among the best reactions I’ve seen to this performance, because you have an equal amount to say about both singers, most of the contemporary reactors don’t have a whole lot to say about a classical singer, some do though… And then you have some of the opera reactors should focus more on Marco because they seem to feel like they want to appeal to their audience and who are mostly contemporary listeners anyway. You are one of the best analyzers who actually pays attention to detail and says it as it is without filter and I like that about you.
Some people have complained that she goes sharp on the last note… Well according to Elizabeth from “the charismatic voice“, she did a review of two guys from home free singing opera/Nessun Dorma, and one of the things she said was that a lot of opera singers, including Pavarotti, go sharp on a lot of their notes intentionally, because it helps those notes to ring out as well as I think it adds to the emotion. Basically, it’s better to go a little sharp than a little flat.
Tarja is a Opera trained Mezzo soprano and in my opinion made the band. I honestly haven't like them since this show. If you ever heard her sing live it would give you chills. The woman could fill that hall with sound without a mic.

My other favorite Nightwish song with Tarja is "I Wish I Had An Angel" (also features Marko), and "Nemo" is another classic Tarja version to check out.
I really like both singers, it is sometimes great to listen to them sing the same song...both have great Ghost Love Score and Ever Dream versions. It's really amazing that the same band can just replace the lead singer and it still work so well, even with the same songs. There is also a version of "Over the Hills and Far Away" were they both sing on stage together in a duet.

Tarja's abilities are why Tuomas decided to go the symphonic metal route instead of the acoustic mood music he originally planned. This performance was 2005 in Helsinki. The DVD is called End of an Era because it was Tarja's last Nightwish show, although she didn't know it. After the concert, the guys gave her the open letter dismissing her from the band after 9 years and 5 albums. She has gone on to a long solo career, and is still active today. Marko has the ability to sound great singing with almost anyone. Andrew Lloyd Weber is a fan of this version, calling it his favorite or one of this favorites. @Dio I don't think Floor has a larger range. I think they're about the same. However I tend to agree that Tarja's version is typically the best version, though I do think Floor has a great voice and has done some good covers of Tarja songs. She just doesn't sound the same as Tarja, which to be fair no one else does. There's only one! (as Jeep would say)
I could (and WILL) listen to this performance a thousand times. I own the DVD and despite the sometimes dizzying music video style editing, I love the whole show so much.
NW performed this song again for their show in The Netherlands. Have not performed it since this one. There's only fan shot footage of it. Since Marco's departure, they brought in a guest vocalist. A very famous Dutch singer, Henk Poort. He was The Phantom on stage in The Netherlands for 3 years. He and Floor appeared together on a Dutch t.v. show, Beste Zangers, in 2019. They performed this together during the finale. Was instantly a viral sensation. Messed up part about this performance. Tarja's vibing along, hometown crowd, everybody's vibing with her. Only, everyone in the band knows she's getting fired, and it's their last time together on stage. Except her. Debates can be had over why things happen, and whether it was ultimately a good or bad decision, but, How things happen can be just as important as why. Sometimes more.
I really enjoy Tarja's more warm and darker tone. Floor is amazing, and I can't really place why, but I feel the Tarja era songs more with Tarja's presentation, even though Floor is more crisp and just as technical with all that. Kinda like an analog vs digital thing? I don't know :P Swanheart from the From Wishes To Eternity concert would be amazing!

She was in Nightwish for 9 years, so it was a shock when she was fired in October of 2005. But she went on to a very successful solo career, releasing 9 albums, and selling out tours. She rekindled her friendships with Marko in December of 2017 and Tuomas in February of 2021.
Mad thing about this song is that, as long as Tarja hit that last note, Markko hit his last note even earlier, and held it longer. IMHO this is his best vocal performance in any of their songs.

You can hear Tarja at her best on "Paradise" with Within Temptation (Sharon den Adel). They're magnificent together. The official video has the best version of their voices but watching any Within Temptation live is worth the time Mother Earth from Resurrection Fest 2019 will blow your mind esp as it comes at the end of 80 minutes of full on stage power.
She has such a beautiful sound to her voice, her style, her stage presence and the way she carries herself is all about class. Please check her performance of Supremacy (Muse cover) from Woodstock 2016 and her take on Mein Herr Marquis from her Beauty & The Beat tour, to hear her versatility in both contemporary and classical music. In Mein Herr Marquis you get to hear her bright and powerful soprano sound and in Supremacy her gorgeous lower register. In 2015 she released an album full of different versions of Ave Maria called En Plein Air. She even wrote one herself, it is very beautiful. You might be interested to hear her take on Ave Maria by Paolo Tosti. It was recorded in Lakeuden Risti church and she said nothing was chanced nor any tricks used, but you can hear her as she sounded in the church performing the song with the musicians without any audience. Absolutely gorgeous voice. She is about to release her Best of - album December 2nd, from which she has a new song "Eye of the storm" out already.
There is a version of Ave Maria from Tarja I've been playing for years LOUDLY on Christmas Eve once it gets dark. I'm not one for lights and decorations, but the neighbors "need" to hear this every year. It's the one with a blue background and she almost looks like Zena with her bangs. The lady pianist from her post-Nightwish band plays the accompanying piano.
This was the song that introduced me to Nightwish when looking for covers of Phantom. Hooked, instantly. And indefinitely. Tarja is my fave still, but Floor really is a supreme singer and performer. Has she watched/reacted to Walking in the Air yet with Tarja?
Ha, ha, when you tried to describe Tarja `s voice, I said: "Good luck with that!" I have heard thousands of people to this day, critics, experts and non - experts, try to do it. It`s a phenomenon very, very difficult to describe. I could "write a book" only about that one note she sings in "Walking in the air", or in "Swanheart" for example. Magnificent vocal artist. I love Marco on this song. He brings something different from the others singers who played the Phantom : His version is quite sinister, almost scary. And to, that's how the Phantom should be because we're talking about a phantom, a ghost, a spirit, some for of undead. Yes he should be charismatic and seductive but he also should be sinister.
You should watch the whole End of an Era show. Tarja owns the stage. Absolutely love Floor, God willing she is fine after her surgery and able to front the band in December. If not, well we've waited two years. We can wait a bit longer for her to be well which is far more important. She's made many of the older songs her own, of course, she is her own person. But there are some songs that will always be Tarja's in my mind. Sleeping Sun being one of them. But don't take my word for it. Watch the show and see how she performs it. I also flip between Everdream and Nemo. The version I prefer in the moment depends wholly on my mood.
I'm quite fond of the musical The Fantom of The opara, which I've seen several times at the theater, but this is actually my favorite version of that track 🙂

Marko is a master in blending his voice with other voices. He has also said that sometimes he had to subdue his voice even with Tarja for not overrunning her but never with Floor. Love Tarja and for my loss she’s the only Nightwish singer I haven’t heard live.
Well that is total BS from Marko. They are using mics for god sake and they can adjust the levels how ever they want to. I'm not sure what he meant with this statement, but it can't be the volume he was talking about.

But they could have just turned his mic down a bit and even put limiter there, so that he could have screamed as much as he liked. It was still a stupid comment from him, giving an expression that Tarja and Anette had weak voices. And maybe it was another way around, and Tarja hold back with him...who knows if they never talked about it.

Marko can use his voice in almost any way he wants, just like Floor. It doesn't matter who he is is singing with, their voices always work well together.
If you know this band you must know the history too. It was founded in 1996 by Tuomas, Emppu and Tarja to make mood music and campfire music. Later Tuomas changed it to symphonic metal. They had made the five first albums and grown to be the world leader of this genre before this very concert and also formed their sound and style. Yes they act the roles so well here too.

I'm a fan of many of these singers but Tarja is Queen of the Symphonic Metal Queens. Her voice brought Symphonic Metal to the world.

I would also suggest "Slaying the Dreamer", from the End of an Era concert. That's another one where Tarja shines.

@Dio I don't think Floor has a larger range. I think they're about the same. However I tend to agree that Tarja's version is typically the best version, though I do think Floor has a great voice and has done some good covers of Tarja songs. She just doesn't sound the same as Tarja, which to be fair no one else does. There's only one! (as Jeep would say)
I could (and WILL) listen to this performance a thousand times. I own the DVD and despite the sometimes dizzying music video style editing, I love the whole show so much.

NW performed this song again for their show in The Netherlands. Have not performed it since this one. There's only fan shot footage of it. Since Marco's departure, they brought in a guest vocalist. A very famous Dutch singer, Henk Poort. He was The Phantom on stage in The Netherlands for 3 years. He and Floor appeared together on a Dutch t.v. show, Beste Zangers, in 2019. They performed this together during the finale. Was instantly a viral sensation.
Messed up part about this performance. Tarja's vibing along, hometown crowd, everybody's vibing with her. Only, everyone in the band knows she's getting fired, and it's their last time together on stage. Except her. Debates can be had over why things happen, and whether it was ultimately a good or bad decision, but, How things happen can be just as important as why. Sometimes more.

I really enjoy Tarja's more warm and darker tone. Floor is amazing, and I can't really place why, but I feel the Tarja era songs more with Tarja's presentation, even though Floor is more crisp and just as technical with all that. Kinda like an analog vs digital thing? I don't know :P

She was in Nightwish for 9 years, so it was a shock when she was fired in October of 2005. But she went on to a very successful solo career, releasing 9 albums, and selling out tours. She rekindled her friendships with Marko in December of 2017 and Tuomas in February of 2021.

It was so special at this time, metal with that opera voice, i loved it. For her softer voice i would recommend Sleeping Sun.
Mad thing about this song is that, as long as Tarja hit that last note, Markko hit his last note even earlier, and held it longer. IMHO this is his best vocal performance in any of their songs.
You are my favorite reaction vocalist to watch. You are so pleasant and have such true emotions and your awe smiles are so wonderful to see. This was a new version for me and I always get inspired to watch the Nicole Scherzinger live version.

You can hear Tarja at her best on "Paradise" with Within Temptation (Sharon den Adel). They're magnificent together. The official video has the best version of their voices but watching any Within Temptation live is worth the time

She has such a beautiful sound to her voice, her style, her stage presence and the way she carries herself is all about class. Please check her performance of Supremacy (Muse cover) from Woodstock 2016 and her take on Mein Herr Marquis from her Beauty & The Beat tour, to hear her versatility in both contemporary and classical music. In Mein Herr Marquis you get to hear her bright and powerful soprano sound and in Supremacy her gorgeous lower register.
In 2015 she released an album full of different versions of Ave Maria called En Plein Air. She even wrote one herself, it is very beautiful. You might be interested to hear her take on Ave Maria by Paolo Tosti. It was recorded in Lakeuden Risti church and she said nothing was chanced nor any tricks used, but you can hear her as she sounded in the church performing the song with the musicians without any audience. Absolutely gorgeous voice.
She is about to release her Best of - album December 2nd, from which she has a new song "Eye of the storm" out already.
There is a version of Ave Maria from Tarja I've been playing for years LOUDLY on Christmas Eve once it gets dark. I'm not one for lights and decorations, but the neighbors "need" to hear this every year. It's the one with a blue background and she almost looks like Zena with her bangs. The lady pianist from her post-Nightwish band plays the accompanying piano.

This was the song that introduced me to Nightwish when looking for covers of Phantom. Hooked, instantly. And indefinitely. Tarja is my fave still, but Floor really is a supreme singer and performer.

Ha, ha, when you tried to describe Tarja `s voice, I said: "Good luck with that!" I have heard thousands of people to this day, critics, experts and non - experts, try to do it. It`s a phenomenon very, very difficult to describe. I could "write a book" only about that one note she sings in "Walking in the air", or in "Swanheart" for example. Magnificent vocal artist. We are lucky to live in her time! For Floor: Stay strong you sexy beast!

I love Marco on this song. He brings something different from the others singers who played the Phantom : His version is quite sinister, almost scary. And to, that's how the Phantom should be because we're talking about a phantom, a ghost, a spirit, some for of undead. Yes he should be charismatic and seductive but he also should be sinister.
One of her most beautiful performances is Swanheart from 2013's Beauty and the Beat concert. Highly recomend that and Sleeping Sun from End of an Era.

You should watch the whole End of an Era show. Tarja owns the stage. Absolutely love Floor, God willing she is fine after her surgery and able to front the band in December. If not, well we've waited two years. We can wait a bit longer for her to be well which is far more important. She's made many of the older songs her own, of course, she is her own person. But there are some songs that will always be Tarja's in my mind. Sleeping Sun being one of them. But don't take my word for it. Watch the show and see how she performs it. I also flip between Everdream and Nemo. The version I prefer in the moment depends wholly on my mood.
I'm quite fond of the musical The Fantom of The opara, which I've seen several times at the theater, but this is actually my favorite version of that track 🙂

Marko is a master in blending his voice with other voices. He has also said that sometimes he had to subdue his voice even with Tarja for not overrunning her but never with Floor. Love Tarja and for my loss she’s the only Nightwish singer I haven’t heard live.
Well that is total BS from Marko. They are using mics for god sake and they can adjust the levels how ever they want to. I'm not sure what he meant with this statement, but it can't be the volume he was talking about.
TARJA is a classical singer with a huge and powerful voice… There’s no way in hell Marco could’ve ever overpowered or overrun her voice…
@@Rosannasfriend true, but Tarja didn't really used her "opera voice" too much with Nightwish, so maybe Marko "had to hold back" in that sense. But they could have just turned his mic down a bit and even put limiter there, so that he could have screamed as much as he liked. It was still a stupid comment from him, giving an expression that Tarja and Anette had weak voices. And maybe it was another way around, and Tarja hold back with him...who knows if they never talked about it.

Mics and mixers can fix volume, but especially on live setting changing the rest is trickier.
Marko can use his voice in almost any way he wants, just like Floor. It doesn't matter who he is is singing with, their voices always work well together.

If you know this band you must know the history too. It was founded in 1996 by Tuomas, Emppu and Tarja to make mood music and campfire music. Later Tuomas changed it to symphonic metal. They had made the five first albums and grown to be the world leader of this genre before this very concert and also formed their sound and style. Yes they act the roles so well here too.
Tarja has a much more "enchanting"/"fairy tale" voice than Floor in my opinion, which it why it works so well for the more fantastical songs.
