  • Human bodies are needed to advance medical science and many tissue banks that distribute bodies donated to science provide a valuable service. But unlike organ donation, this market is for-profit and largely unregulated, creating opportunities for bad actors to mislead families or outright con people out of their loved ones' remains to line their pockets. In this eye-opening documentary, CBS Reports goes inside the $100 million market where bodies donated to science are bought and sold for profit.

    I used to work at a place that processed bodies "donated to science" and had to quit because my moral compass was spinning. The bodies are not treated with respect. The loved ones would be promised that what wasn't used would be returned and cremated, with no charge, and I don't believe that happened once. The parts that could not be used were thrown in a biohazard bin and unceremoniously incinerated. Most of the donations were from people who could not afford cremation services. These people were told their loved ones would be taken care of and used for science, but really their donation would make over a million dollars, make products for cosmetic dental procedures, and the family saw none of that. It was disgusting, and I am permanently scarred from working in this industry. It needs deep, widespread reform.

    The night my father passed away, my mother received a call from someone purporting to be an authorized non-profit with state authorization asking her to donate my father's body. My mother, still in shock at the loss of her husband called me in a panic, thinking some government agency would take my father's body away. How the caller knew that my father passed away so soon after his passing and the nature of his treatment at the hospital meant someone at the hospital unit or the hospital morgue gave him the heads-up. After cursing him out, I had no energy to address this with the hospital, who should have spoken to us at the hospital, rather than disclose my father's information to a third party. The incident made me change my preference from organ donor to nondonor. This video is important. There are unscrupulous people in this industry. They take advantage of those who want to give their bodies as their last act on earth to benefit the bodies of the living.

      I am an RN that worked for 20+ years in several emergency rooms in Southern California. I don't know if this is for all states or limited to CA but there is a checklist to be completed when a patient dies. On that list is instructions to notify, I believe, it was the eye and tissue bank or maybe it was just eye. I could be wrong about the name since I haven't worked in a hospital for several years. Any way I would have to call and discuss the patient i,e . diseases like cancer, AIDS,,, The eye and tissue bank would make the decision based on that info if tissue could be harvested and if so the patient info would be provided along with next of kin contact. I always felt odd about giving the info because I could imagine while the family is grieving they would get a call from some stranger about donation.

    • @shebadaboss
      @shebadaboss ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Correct Linda, I actually worked for LifeGift Organ Procurement Center as one who received the call. Based on the information provided from the hospital, we had to make the call within 4 hours of time of death because the procurement has to be done within 24 hours of death. Unfortunately, there was an incident where a coworker contacted the NOK to ask for the eye, bone and tissue donation before they were notified from the hospital itself. I did not stay there long at all once I got a full understanding of what all was going on there.

    • @JazzyJae88
      @JazzyJae88 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I work in an ICU. So I handle a lot of death. By law we have to report all deaths to the organ procurement organizations within 60 mins of time of death. We are also not allowed or supposed to approach the family about donation. The procurement agency does. Also if a patient meets certain qualifications before death, the procurement agency needs to be notified within 60 mins. We give them name, DOB, race, admitting diagnosis, medical and surgical history. That’s how they know what they do. So please don’t curse out the staff just doing their jobs. I don’t care what type of panic or grieve you’re in, it’s rude, disrespectful, and not excusable.

    My thoughts were that I wasn’t going to be using it anymore so I wanted to help create new treatments and further knowledge on diseases but I don’t want there to be a possibility of my flesh being carved away from my bones and then them being displayed. I don’t understand how this industry isn’t heavily regulated. To know that someone with an infectious debase can be dissected and shipped across the country and nobody knowing is scary. They dismembered my dad and sold him in pieces, and sold my sweet mother's body whole. The "cremains" we received were not my parents. Those evil people were scamming people to pay them for services not fulfilled, and then selling bodies and body part on the back end. Although there may be reputable companies, most of them are not. The lack of respect in the mutilation of those who should be honored is dispicable. Just because something isn't illegal, doesn't make it moral. Last, there is a difference between body snatching and legally donating a body for legitimate scientific research.

I wanted to make sure there was no mix-up in the process, so I could be sure I received HIS ashes, and not someone else's. They told me it was against state law to allow that. (Missouri) But is that really true? And why would they make a law forbidding that?

    I found this so disturbing it made me so sick to my stomach. Those people who had that dissection event and the people who went there to handle the body parts and watch a dissection of a human body are sickening and perverse - they did it for morbid curiosity and entertainment . A body once held a soul and had the ability to create life, it's not just a meat suit. Human remains should be treated with more respect. This is so sick...what is going on in America?

    • @sparkytuttle2966
      @sparkytuttle2966 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ok. Don't donate because the people handling a body will make some money. But how do they keep the lights on, hire someone to deal with the body and whatever else they profit from? Even though almost everything mentioned here actually helps mankind? So these people should work for free? And what happens when you don't donate? Doctors don't advance, the military doesn't advance, the forensic department won't advance which will ultimately harm a living person due to lack of donations. And past that, you would rather be paying for a funeral at a cost far higher than cost. It's your right to do whatever you want, that dead body is not your loved one. It's a cadaver. Your loved one is more than than bones, organs and hair. I say, please research before you say no.
