Would love to see the new Rangie against this crowd. The L405 goes back to 2013 which is forever old now.
In 10 years one will be worth $50,000 and the other two will be worth $10,000 combined
No kidding with this comment 😂
I don’t know anyone who holds a car for 10 years.
NOT A SINGLE PERSON.
@@eranmaron909 You are a statistical outlier. I have a 2005 Jaguar, 1989 Ford, 2007 Mazda, and a 2011 Ford. About 90% of the people I know have at least one 10+ year-old car.
Lol now a days hardly anybody keep for 10 years. Lexus is good for used market not for if they owner. wants to keep for 3 or 5 years the first owner
Since they lack in tech and luxuriousness than other auto brand and they feel older faster than other auto brands
That's the old Range Rover, which is ten years old now. The new model has been on sale for nearly 2 years now: a totally different beast.
Also rock crawl was the wrong mode. Mud and ruts would have done way better

I had chance to test New Defender in offroad. And when I mean offroad it was actually muddy corners and steep hills and just a real offroad. The Defender was absolutely beast.
I’m a Toyota/lexus fan because of the reliability but I think that Range Rover is so cool, I got to drive one recently and man they drive like a dream, when they run right lol
exactly. We caretake for an older couple and their ranger rover was in the shop more than it was in the garage. This went on for about 6 years before they finally just sold it for pennies on the dollar. It ended up with an electrical draw that couldnt be fixed without some crazy dollar amount to replace the whole harness or something. It was pretty good in the snow and drove well.
Forgot to mention they bought a used 2008? land cruiser after that and they drive it back and forth to Canada. I think it has 350k or more on it now and has been very reliable.
Wow imagine being so boring that reliably makes you a fan of a car😂😂😂😂😂😂

Tommy is doing a fantastic job with all of the content he is involved with! Super clear and enjoyable to watch! Oh, and this was a great 4X4 battle!
Love the video! I think it would’ve been better having the new Range Rover as well, but, we got to understand that they cannot comer across all the vehicles needed at times. When Land Rover introduced this long wheelbase model I was working for a JLR dealership and they advised us against any modifications due to the stretched wheelbase. These long wheelbase models were intended for mainly on-road use. I think all three vehicles here did well considering that all of them were wearing street wheels and tires. If I want reliable, yes, the Lexus takes the crown and drive home with me. But, after working for JLR for about 6 years, there’s something special about the Rovers. I’d still buy one with the S/C V8 engine.
Why did Lexus think it was a good idea to put a vacuum cleaner on the front of that car?
I don't hate it either.
Huh?

If you squint, you can see Darth Vader's mask!...but seriously, not many people are spending this kind of money to offroad a luxury SUV...and if they are, they aren't going for any of these 3 vehicles. The real shame here is that there is no button on the dash that makes the car go "whoooo-paaahhh, whoooo-paaahhh, whoooo-paaahhh".

Toyota all the way, every time (yeah, I know, but we don't get the Lexus here in Austria).
Tommy 👍, probably the best off-road comparison review of these three competitors I have seen, great work TFL 🤗🤗
Great video, great content. Lexus LX I believe has the hydraulic KDSS which forces fluid into the alternating front to rear wheel (driver or same thing on pass side). It's great for articulation while still preventing sway. It's articulation was off the charts
When you started the video with the rollers I audibly gasped. Thank you!!!!!!!!!
Now we want to see GX overtrail vs Defender
That’s a GLS not a GLE
Surprisingly, the GLE can actually be specced with a 2-speed transfer case and metal skid plates.
Surprisingly? Those GLE’s and the ML before them have been know off roaders. Our 2017 GLE 350 couldn’t get stuck no matter how hard we tried haha.

going on the 10 year old 4wd system in the rover that was pretty damn good, I've been offroad in both the l405 and the new one and have to say the new one has a faster responding system, with better programming to tackle tricky terrain, it also has better articulation than the old one does. it would be interesting, personally though both rangies I've driven have had the 3.0 tt diesel, which with the extra toque delivery really sold me on them. love your work guys!
My friend wanted a range rover so bad and finally was able to get one. Loved the car but broke his lease early due to chronic mechanical problems. He traded it on a 300 series. It had to be flat bedded to the Toyota dealership on the trade in day because it wouldn’t engage first gear.

Its awesome that you're comparing the three off road, try putting the Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator to the mix, really curious to see if they can actually go off road
You guys should do a bit of research with you owning that range rover on what the different drive modes do with the suspension because some maximise articulation but some try to keep a maximum ride height and if you know that it could help you on the trial depending on what situation you’re in

GLS is the perfect all rounder, especially with a diesel engine = low fuel consumption and big range.
Proud LX600 owner watching the video with a big smile❤😂
Love the L405 .. looking forward to how it holds up through your ownership!
Comparing a previous generation Range Rover to the current models of Benz and Lexus is rather pointless from the standpoint of evaluating if Range Rover is still king. You should have used a current Range Rover.
Especially when you consider that design came out in 2012
You beat me to it.
Is not like the new one stands a chance. Range Rover is history. Only people will no knowledge want them.
@@Offensivebeast of course you like those money pits. You think that design has anything to do with off road performance.

Maybe a bit unfair to compare a 10 year old RR to the newer MB and LX. Great vid though!
1 thing your right about is the off road package is extremely rare on the GL/GLS BUT the new gls do still Have it as a option it’s just rare people option it
LX is the one you want to buy and keep long term. Lease a Range Rover if that’s your style (it is good looking), cause it will start to bankrupt you on repairs. Can’t speak for the Mercedes admit. Yes I own a 2020 LX.
Totally agree with you I own a 2019 LX and imma keep it forever, also have a 2020 rover sport so far
no issues fingers crossed
I have a 2019 LX. It has “weapons grade” 4WD systems!
Toggle switches are killer
Mercedes while not as OR oriented(obviously)would compete with the Lexus for all the other check boxes. Accept long term cost might be higher for license and insurance. Maintenance. But that is not to say it has repair issues. Just that Mercedes going in for regular service intervals will be more expensive than a Lexus. Trust me, I have had Mercedes, they are under rated for long term reliability. Older generations, could get a lemon. But modern day Mercs are just as reliable in my experience. And I have had both Lexus and Mercedes. (and BMW, along with a slew of others lol)
An excellent comparison and luxury SUV display. So despite popular reviewer opinion, these big wheel/tire luxury SUVs are not completely useless off-road after all. Imagine what they could do with a dedicated off-road wheel/tire combo.
Definitely would like to see the latest Range Rover go through the test, particularly with rear wheel steering.
Well if I'm not mistaken the Lexus is a body on frame so essentially a truck while the others are unibody. Nevertheless, they all made it through the course (w/street wheels/tires) so that's the true decider for any of their off-road capabilities. With the right tire wheel package, they can only do better.
Love that moonswatch Tommy!
Those lexus/ lcs are ridiculous. Would take that all day everyday 2x on sunday.
Yea I hope overland trim comes to this model. They did say overland trim is coming to other LX models
Overland is coming to LX?
@faheemabbas3965 sorry for the confused. Lexus did say that the trim is coming to other models, but it's not confirmed if it's coming to the LX model.
I have a 2007 l322 tdv8 with the rear diff lock and it is the best car i ever driven offroad. Lifted old 110 with 33 inch mud terrain cant keep up with it.
So what's the difference between that Lexus and that overtrail version (besides the wheels}
Id take a new Range Rover and compare it to a new Lexus instead of one that originates in 2013.
Maybe try fully load up the vehicles with people and see how they perform. Could give a true look
Those skid plates on the RR - I wouldn't trust those to protect you when high-centered. At best they're good for keeping branches from snaking up and snagging a hose or wire. But that RR is a heavy beasy.
You guys bought another vehicle?! That Lexus is certainly amazing, and the likely the most reliable of the three vehicles there.
I’m curious how these crawl control systems would do in low traction ice/snow environments that usually require wheel spin and momentum. Thinking some driveways with packed snow plus some sun.
Based on the performance here, I'm guessing admirable. But most certainly would have needed a change to snow tires for that one.
That L405 had an unusual amout of wheel spin. I've been studying them and checking out their capabilities for a long time now and this was the only one who spun the wheels a lot that I've seen!
This one is a long wheelbase with no locking rear diff which is very uncommon in a Range Rover which is why it was slipping so much
@@lbnewell23 I've seen others as well with no locking rear. Heck, even the L322 slips less.
Because he was using rock crawl mode when it should have been Auto or Mud/Ruts.
The error is always the nut behind the wheel.
@@lbnewell23was nothing to do with no rear locker. He had it in the wrong mode. If you don’t KNOW (not guess) which mode use Auto.
@@jerrymyahzcat he may well have had it in the wrong mode and it would’ve done better in the correct one but in that circumstance it had everything to do with the rear locker. If it had one both rear tires would’ve turned at identical speeds and because it was a rear tire that had traction it would’ve simply driven off the rollers with no slip at all
You can still get an off road package with skid plates on the gls580
Great video there. The Lexus is truly a beast and definitely delivers the best of both the on- and offroad worlds. By the way, both the Landcruiser 300 and Lexus LX are commonly sold in the same market overseas, so its not a case of only one or the other as has been the case in the US.
GLS, need to spec the off-road package for it to be a fair test. This adds additional low range and locker plus metal skid plates.
The Lexus is a rebadged Land Cruiser, not surprised how well it does
Why would you use the rock crawl setting to get off the rollers which basically simulate slippery conditions? Wouldn't you use snow/ice setting as you would in real life?
How about a mpg test. Lowest setting vs highest setting. Do your loop.
I had commented this about a video where your dad and I think it was Alex on Auto's compared the LX 570 to the Range rover offroad and I said that with the hydraulic suspension of the lexus, in the most jacked up state the car becomes its most comfortable as the hydraulic actuators that offer the dampening and raise of ride height of the system open up when the wheels are in compression to offer more damping. This is why after the lexus drove out of the rollers it bounced so much, its like the E active body control of the gls on a baja course. I feel you havent fully understood how it works. The air suspension has to maintain certain forces to keep the car up and cannot react as fast as the hydraulic actuators in a hydraulic suspension system that is why an air sprung setup is so jiggly offroad. Also lexus does offer a offroad edition with 18' alloy wheels. The mercedes is also a GLS and those aluminium skid plates wont be so good during rock crawls, you need steel ones like on the lexus
One thing Range Rover does far better than Lexus is making the offroad systems intuitive and well organized. In the RR all the buttons for the offroad controls are all in the same spot, and work well together with the software. The Lexus still puts the 4wd low range button here center diff lock there, mode mode over yonder, crawl control a country mile away, hill decent in a different zip code etc
can’t believe the older range rover is still the best on and off road. it truly is the best
The older ones are better at it. They get less and less off-road capable with every update.
On top of the Lexus performing great it will also have the best aftermarket support out of all 3 so you could take its off road ability on many higher levels.
hydraulique suspension less likely to fail ? That's the sign that you don't have much Citroën in the US ^^
Should have thrown in a maxed out Rivian R1S if we are talking 100k plus luxury offroadish SUVs. 😄
The LC Prado we’re getting is kinda lame. It’s diet Land Cruiser. Wish we got the real 300
OMG can I use the coupon again? I bought onX at original price!!!
Next test, BMW X7, Cadi Escalade, Lincoln Navi
So the question is has the new RR improved enough to compete with this Lexus because everyone knows the old LC wasn't this fluid. It was reliable and a little clunky/outdated but that was alright.
I'm surprised that you have not compared the bmw x7 and the nissan armada specifically to the other three 🤔
Mercedes-Benz removed the low range from the GLE and GLS very quietly with this facelift.
The Lexus is incredible.
Always boils down to what you need/want from a vehicle. What you can afford. What is your intention for ownership period. IF you are a 1 and done kind of person whom might 1 day want to throw that Lexus off road on a regular basis, I would take that over all 3 choices shown here. IF you want that plush ride with class leading tech. and reliability to match, the Mercedes. IF you want the short term ownership experience of a RR(under warranty)it would suffice I suppose for the experience. Is it capable OR? Yes. Is it the King? I would say it is Royalty, but I would not give it top billing in the 3 shown here.
Interesting video. But annoying music in the background.
At least it's quiet.
I still don't know why people put music in car videos
There’s no way you just tried to get away with comparing a 10 year old vehicle with brand new ones.
Toyota did me a temporary favor by dropping the recovery hooks and V-8 from the pickup lineup in 2023. I'm still a Toyota guy at heart but this time I wound up ordering a v-8 Tremor (with the Torsen front diff) and am getting around 20 mpg or more combined and it has performed Very well off-road. The big question is if it will be reliable long term. Peace, Love!!
Why wouldn’t it be? The notion of Toyota somehow being more reliable than everyone else is nonsense.
@@tylermacconnell217 All auto manufacturers need to spend as little as possible + make as much as possible per vehicle (= profit margin). All auto manufacturers spend their money on vehicles differently. Toyota often lags behind other manufacturers for the latest tech and "newer" powertrains, but Toyota has always invested far more into engineering their vehicles for longer, more reliable performance.
For example, if you've been waiting for a hybrid power train option in the 4runner, you've been waiting a very long time, but the 4runner has arguable one of the most reliable powertrains in the world. The Landcruiser is known to be engineered to last 20+ years (every single component of the vehicle). The big 3 U.S. auto manufacturers will give you newer and more tech and features, but they don't spend the money on over-engineering like Toyota does.
If you buy your cars new and you're only planning on keeping your vehicle for 2-5 years then getting the latest, coolest stuff is fine and you won't likely really notice much difference (although with the only Dodge I owned I spent 3 different days at the dealer service shop getting various electrical and mechanical issues fixed...I've never once been near a service shop in the 2 Toyotas I've owned). I owned a FJ Cruiser for 13 years and when I sold it, it drove exactly as it did the day I took it off the lot (from 9 miles to 97K miles)...every mechanical part, button dial, everything worked exactly as it did when I bought it. I drove it offroad in Utah, many long road trips, commuted to work and back every day, it was absolutely driven...and still felt brand new.
So, in short, yes, it is true that Toyota is more reliable (because that's where they spend their money) than other manufacturers...and the resulting data also proves it...just search for "most reliable auto brands" and every single credible source will list Toyota and Lexus in the top 3 every single year (with Ford, Dodge, and Chevy usually being at or very near the bottom).
Dont forget to hand calculate fuel economy and adjust your AFE Bias.
@@ALMX5DP Hand calculated 18.5 to 20.5 relatively in town, Truck says over 21 after 9k miles. Went from Aztec to Denver and back on one tank (obviously at elevation). Truck said 23+, I didn't bother. If I had gotten 17 on that trip I would have been happy.
I had bought a 17 LX new, kept it for three years before selling it. The vehicle felt cheap inside, constantly had the alarm going off randomly, door lock actuators failing, and the brakes were inadequate for towing causing severe shaking. Lexus rides in their hard earned reputation from the first half of their existence where unrivaled quality was built in. They are clearly all built to a much cheaper standard in recent years.
But you will hear no one mentioning these things, just praises.

Bro Forgot that Defender Exists
Where the GWagon at?
I’d argue ‘rock crawl’ modes are not the best test on rollers. Rocks tend to offer grip whereas a ‘mud’ mode would simulate lose slip more realistically for the roller
Not exactly. Because rocks are supposed to offer high traction but be very irregular, the chances of lifting tyres is very high, so rock mode is usually the most aggressive since you get wheels on the air (no resistance) and the opposite being on a high traction surface (no slipping which means very high load so more torque is needed to turn it)
Mud or sand however offer way lower traction. So you want slipping and power. Which means less brake action in favour of trying to maintain momentum. No point in trying to crawl in mud or sand because you're going to break traction MUCH more easily
@@pablomoreno1999 that does make sense
