Thank you for your video and sharing your journey. My sister in law was an ER vet and took her life 5 months ago. Thank you for shedding light on the mental health struggles in the industry. A lot of people don't realise what vets, vet nurses, vet tech, admin staff experience on a daily basis. We are no left with a massive hole in our hearts because the abuse and pressures took their toll. I wish you all the best in your new journey out of the ER. Stay safe and thank you for what you do ❤️

Hey there! What an important video for aspiring vets to see. Thanks for being so open and honest. I almost quit my residency and after taking some time off + meds + a great therapist + wonderful spouse, I'm back and going forward except that I now realize how important my mental health is both to me AND to my patients who walk, slither, crawl, fly or hop through the door! Keep us posted on your journey.

Yes therapy yes! I’m so happy you found a path that was right for you and found your way to move forward. Sometimes you need a change, sometimes you just need time or a break. I’m so happy you’re pet of this profession, we need you here ❤️.

You are going to love general practice if the client connection was what you missed! Just as I know of a vet that struggled with talking to clients and is happier doing night shifts at a 24 hour clinic instead. Thank you so much for being open with us and showing us that, as you said, a work life balance is a requirement and not a luxury!

Thank you for sharing this, I can’t imagine how hard of a decision that was to make, but I respect you for it. It’s awful how many vets kill themselves from the mental and emotional stress of their jobs; a vet I know had a fellow vet friend who recently committed suicide. I’m a HS student planning to become a veterinarian, and even though the exhaustion and extreme challenges of vet school are intimidating, I’m glad to know what I’m getting into.

Thanks for sharing this. One of my roommates who was 2 years ahead of me told me about 6 months into a very demanding internship that she had quit and was trying to decide if she wanted to be a vet or a street musician. I was fortunate that my first job the two partners were there when I needed help but let me have as much freedom as I thought I could handle. I think you’ll excel at client communication. You are a very poised young lady. Love your pooch showing concern when he/she detected stress in your voice.

This was beautifully honest. I worked in a shelter and at a clinic and have many rescue cats, so my vet and the staff are the most important professionals in my life. I am aware of the heartache and difficulties. My vet of many years just closed her practice to be an associate at another clinic because clients were getting outrageously nasty and good personnel was impossible to find and keep. It is devastating but understandable. When people have compassion for other people in addition to the animals, maybe life can be better for us all. 🙏

I too am a veterinarian and I have quit that job as of the end of last month after over 20 years. I am a boarded criticalist (DACVECC). I am tired of the corporate model that is taking over veterinary medicine and I am no longer able to give my clients and patients the honest care and advice that I believe in due to having to bow down to corporate interests over that of the animals. I have also known 6 veterinarians that have committed suicide for many reasons. I am finding that I am having an identity crisis, in that I'm not sure what I am if I'm not a doctor anymore. Anyway, I just wanted to say, thank you for sharing your journey. Much love and respect. All the best.

Hey girl, I have just found your videos :) Not only did I change my job, I changed my career (from working with human cancer patients to a veterinarian) and I relate so much to the struggle of accepting the change, and then also telling other people. Your mental health always comes first. I look forward to your videos in the future!

Remembering what it was like in vet school during clinical rotations, having to stay up all night doing tech work, then back into clinics the next day, I will never forget struggling to just stay awake during the day. Forget about learning anything!
I would never want that for my work life. Give me boring general practice all day every day and I will continue to live a modest lifestyle until the day I die and I will be happy because my mental health and job satisfaction come first.

Good for you for doing what you needed to do. I went through the same sort of thing about 12 years ago. The sleep issue caused my mental health to deteriorate to a point where I almost lost everything. I made the decision to move on, and a couple of years later a friend who hung in there committed suicide. I managed to stay away from corporate clinics because some experienced doctors warned me to be careful about getting in to that world. I'm in a great place now with family, work, travel, ect. Take care of yourself first. Hope your new spot is awesome. Love your videos. I have a therapist and am glad you do too.

I've always lived by the premise that the day you wake up and absolutely HATE going to work is the day you need to find another job. This happened to me back many, many years ago. I quit a job that was toxic and it was the best thing I ever did. I found another job and retired 30 years later still enjoying going to work. Mental health is EVERYTHING and you are one smart young lady having figured this out so early in life. Bravo !!

I am so glad I found this video! I am in the middle of making the decision to switch my major from sociology to animal science to eventually become a vet tech and maybe a vet. I have felt guilt and shame thinking about switching from a major I have put so much time and effort into. But I know I will be happier (as someone who already struggles with mental health) working with patients and their owners than social work/advocacy. I feel like I’m leaving an opportunity to make a difference for the selfish reason of mental health. I keep reminding myself what I would say to a friend if they were in this situation. Thank you for giving me the confidence I needed to allow myself to make the switch ♥️

Thank you for this video. Truly. Very similar to you, I didn’t want to do an internship or specialize, and so my first job out of vet school was also in ER. I ended up getting let go within my probationary period due to not meeting the standard they expected at this busy ER clinic (without adequate mentorship to help get me to this point, as is unfortunately often the case in these settings, as you experienced, too), and I was devastated. I spent two months unemployed before eventually finding a general practice job (which I never thought I’d do!) at a clinic owned by, funny enough, my communication skills coach from vet school, and I’m coming up on 8 months here. Losing my first job turned out to be a massive blessing in disguise - not because my current clinic is perfect, but because, like you said, it’s BETTER. And that’s enough. I truly wish you all the best in your new job 💕

And there are some very hard point and hard conversations to made about this topic. You are extremely brave to leave and choose YOU and YOUR well-being over anything and anyone else and it is nothing but selfish. By choosing YOU you are better person that everyone want to be around ! It is better for everyone soo it is nothing but selfish! I wish you all the best on your future endeavours no matter if they will be in veterinary field or outside of it.

"You're on your way to burnout, kid" is a phrase that shouldn't exist. You're a kid, you shouldn't be burned out like this. My wife and I started a practice 7 years ago, and we get calls from cooperates day and night with 10M+ offers to buy our clinic. I'm the Accountant/Everything. My wife is the DVM. We have 3 DVM working for us making 200k a year -out of school. Come work for us! We would renew you. Make you a SURGEON! These girls came in afraid to diagnose gastroenteritis and now they perform TTT's at least once a month. We have insane parties, public events, we have a 6ft stack oif treats clients bring us that we cannot chisel through, lol. You just need the right place. South east Texas. Straight up no bs we would hire you in a second. LFG! :)
Edit: I'm a millennial, we aren't kids, but you know what I mean.

I hear ya sister. After 16 years of FT work in practice as a vet nurse I am so happy that I left the hospital for working from home in pet insurance. Burnout is real- I worked through it for about 18 months before I dissolved into a true mental breakdown. I took FMLA and had 12 weeks of medical leave before making the final decision to leave hospital work. Now, I work 1-2 shifts a month per diem and that keeps me happy :) seeing great clients and some fav patients still gives me the warm and fuzzies and then when I have to deal with a PIA client I smile through this not being my FT job anymore.

    I have something to say.
I don't have therapist, i don't have friends/colleges that are in exact same mindset as i am, but i just want to put this out there, maybe i will read this in a 5 or 10 years and i will update how i feel about veterinary profession.
I wanted to be a vet since i was a little kid and i didn't care about a lot of people saying it's hard, because i believed i can do it. I have been and i still am in this field for almost 10 years.
I became an assistant, then started a vet school and now, when i'm almost half done with studies i understood that i burned out, because of hard studies and working 3-4 nightshifts a week while studying. Before starting it it seemed so f-ing cool, i thought i will have a lot of experience. I did. But i was not able to study, work and have a hobbies. I took a gap year and told almost no one. My parents still don't know it, even tho i live with them (they wouldn't understand, because when i told them i will do it, they started to became toxic, it's better this way that they don't know). I feel guilty when i tell my colleges that I'm just resting this year and working once a week, because it's this unwritten thing that they seem jealous about it, because they can't take a break, they are also burned out.
idk if i will continue to study. But i needed this break to just rest. I love this profession, i don't want to leave if, but from other hand i want to leave. We will see.
Bella, thank you so much for sharing this, i don't feel alone with this strange feeling of leaving something i love since i'm a kid. And i have watching your channel for like 5 years, it's kind of hear warming to see that i'm not alone with these thoughts.
P.S. You are so beautiful inside out, omg, love your vibe.

Hi, I'm a veterinary care assistant and have been working as one for the last 4 years but I can describe from my experiences that the veterinary industry is very toxic with high demands and expectations. When I started working as a VCA I was employed as a locum and would work at various clinics in the area although a lot of my training got cut short and interrupted by covid which did cause a lot of problems and having to deal with abusive staff definitely affected me in the first 2 years as I had put on 2 stone in weight due to work stress and stress eating.
I have now been working at a stationary clinic nearly for the past year and have settled but still having to deal with clicky work colleagues who like to gossip about other staff members and often you see favoritism in the workplace. I would like to proceed onto studying veterinary nursing but whether the opportunity comes available to me is another story.

Hey Bella, I’m a vet student my self and I really love the wildlife and exotic animals part of the career, but I’m scared because I’ve been warned a lot of times that it’s a very difficult to enter that kind of job because it doesn’t have a big demand of vets as other types of vet work. Do you have any recommendations to me? Or any suggestions on how should I enter this kind of world?

Same! I want to go into a wildlife and exotic animal career like ved med but I’m not sure I can find a ved med job in that field

Me too! But where I'm from (can) it's kinda the opposite...we are in high demand for exotic vets. The issue, most people don't want to specialize in that or vet schools are closing down their exotic branches (therefore Canadians who do want to do exotics, study abroad then never come back). I'm still in school but my word of advise for you would be to look into exotic/wildlife conservation. I've been volunteering at a wildlife rehab center/hospital for a while now and it's so interesting and rewarding to be able to help out the wildlife. Even as a vet, if you specialized in conservation you'd be able to get work in with rehab centers or zoos, and it's definitely something I'd recommend (and it's very interesting!)

Sorry about this. I know how hard it can be. Not only the employers but also the clients can be tough. Not to mention how hard it is to treat our sick patients sometimes. But, you can find a practice that is better for you. Not an emergency clinic. You've got this. Dr. Orion.

Do what you want. Health is wealth. At the end of a long life the only one who cared about your life is YOU. All the other peoples' opinions through the years are long gone and mean nothing.

Also side note, what breed is your dog? He looks like an exact larger version of my dog! The resemblance is uncanny…

I'm new to all the vet field careers so correct me if I'm wrong, but it sounds like you're still a vet but just in a different area? Is that right?

You are a very sweet soul and a very good person. I wish you were my veterinarian. I am in Texas and I have four German Shepherd‘s or females to one year olds and I have two that just turned three and I will tell you the veterinarian I had here all she cared about was money, money money And wouldn’t let you go into the examining room with my dog and anytime something went wrong I would complain about it and then they would never admit that what the vet tech did was a mistake and they never admitted at all to anything they did to harm my dogs so I didn’t go there for a while and then it happened again and then I didn’t go there for a while and then we just decided we’re going to break off and I was going to find another vet. One of the girls that worked as a receptionist told me that the reason why they never admit the wrong is because it’s very hard to hire another vet tech anyway thank you so much for your video. You are a true sweetheart of a person. I am definitely going to subscribe to your channel and I wish you the best of luck in everything that you do. I wish you were my veterinarian for my for German shepherds…JAZZ, STARR, FREEDOM & NAVY….
Always remember that insults that insults are complements from the depths of ignorance, and in some cases stupidity❤

Same, I am currently a sophmore. I’ve wanted to be a veterinarian ever since I was little, but as I was doing research, I found that it takes 8 or more years to become one. Throughout those years, many stress comes with it. I watched a TedTalk talking about the path/day of a veterinarian and it really was an eyeopener. I feel like I won’t be able to keep my mental health in a good place throughout the years to becoming a veterinarian. Right now, I’m considering to change my career job :(

The TedTalk youtube video is called “What Being A Veterinarian Really Takes” , I highly recommend. It helped me decide whether I should become one or not!

Thinking of quiting working in practice after finishing my one year contract.
After passing the board exam i went to clinic practice and then my senior (also boss) only accompanied me for around 2 weeks during my duty. Then i was left all alone in our clinic during my duty with the assistants...

When the masks drop down on the plane, they tell you to put your own mask on first. You can't help anyone else if you don't help yourself.
