My mates and I use to play and explore in the dyers, we walked over the railway bridge into the works, it had its own fire station.

I remember walking through the dye works in the 1950s on our way from Ripley Street & over Mooney’s field to Bowling Park.

Excellent. Was it intact at the time?

I was only a small child then, my memory of it is that it was not in use. Seem to remember walking through a yard & don’t remember the path you followed. Sorry I can’t remember any more. Thanks for reminding me of our trips to Bowling Park.

    Great Video guys.
My mum worked at Ripley’s mill on Killinghall Road in the early seventies, as a burler and mender, do you know if Ripley Dyeworks mill is anything to do with that one.
It’s great to go back in time with your video’s.
    Many thanks

Brilliant video. I used to walk down the path at the side with my dad every Saturday to my grandparents on Manchester road. They lived in the flats that have recently been demolished. Thank you for documenting everything that will eventually be forgotten.

The path went from Bowling Park gates at Paley Road down to Ripley Road at West Bowling. It would have been alongside the Ripleyville houses at one point. I used to use it as a cut through to visit friends in Little Horton rather than taking two buses into town and up to their house. We called the path 'the Dyers'. I'm gonna have to go back and have another wander if I can. Thanks for the video guys, great memories flooding back.

I only quite recently found out thayt ripleyville (the recently demolished housing estate) was named after the original ripleyville and many of the names of of the different parts of ripleyville were named after streets of the original ripleyville.
You guys are doing the people of bradford a great service with these videos. Well done guys

The round ended bricks are called bullnose bricks.
    The "angled"bricks were plynth bricks.
Did you know that in its prime bradford ,had the largest number of roll royces anywhere in the uk. It really was a powerhouse to the economy.
Enjoying your appreciation to days gone by👍👍

Thanks for information on the brick work 👍🏽
It's hard to believe that we were once a power house , but when you start digging deep you can see lots of evidence 😉
Thanks for watching and commenting 🙂

Hi fellas, as a boy my late dad's family had 2 spinster sister relatives living in a 'yard' cottage off Rook Lane/Tong Street known to me as aunts Lilly & Lucy. I think they were spinsters as their boyfriends were lost in WW1 and to survive they shared a house together. Different times back then and they stayed together till death never .marrying. My paternal grandmother used to work at one of the worsted factories on Rook Lane.

I know the area well Douglas. I used to frequent the old fish and chip shop, and play around factory street. Lovely people used to live on Rook Lane.

@@akrecyclingltd Cheers Jaw Jaw, TBH I wouldn't know that area at all now, it was back in the 1950's and I grew up and left Yorkshire in v early 70's My paternal family were Birkenshaw based but my dad settled in Batley with mum. The rest is history as they say. Cheers DougT

Thank you very much for the upload like you I did not know that this existed I will google it and see what comes up about this complex it was very obviously a very large site.I do hope that these remains will be left intact and not removed as they are an essential part of bradfords textile history.I have just googled this it appears to be the remains of what was once one of the largest dyeworks in west yorkshire and there was a village very similar to Saltaire but it was demolished apart from some almshouses around about 1970 had it survived for longer it would probably have been listed.

You're right. This is very important history and at least some of it should be preserved.
This is only a tiny part of it. We have yet to uncover Ripleyville.
