    Thank you for these videos. It's difficult finding videos about adopting from foster care without fostering kids first. I am still a few years away from being confident and financially secure enough to care for a child, but adopting a waiting child from foster care just seems to be the best option for me, so that's what I'm aiming for. Your videos have helped a ton. Thank you again!

    The secret to having the best children is always putting yourself in their shoes when you talk with them about anything.
    I was adopted as a teen and I was so happy and relieved. I was surprise adopted on an airplane in Hawaii it was so cool.
    My girlfriend came with four children and I was a dad from when I was 18 years old. The children were so well behaved and loved me so much. They said I was the greatest dad in the world and the coolest dad ever.
    I would always just put myself in their shoes and think about what they were thinking and what they wanted and just talk to them about being responsible first and foremost and then having fun. But even then I would still give them leeway and amnesty. And I would just make sure that whatever it was it got done that day.
    I'm going to foster to adopt one more. I love being a dad.
    Thanks for the informative video. I didn't know that about college being free tuition for your adopted children. That's definitely part of the end game for her growth. I have my eye on getting her through college. We have a good one nearby. But I'll leave the choice to her.
    Thanks again.

    In our foster care training they said you need to know what your “hard no’s” are so that you don’t get a foster kid with issues you aren’t equipped to handle.

    Hey Katie! I’ve stumbled across your page today and I’m so glad! My husband and I have two biological children, two and five months, and have a heart for adoption and hope this will be part of our family’s story! I have read it recommended to “adopt in birth order” and I see the general wisdom of that counsel, though it may not be necessary for all situations of course. You have great insights on trying to be realistic about what you can handle. My husband and I have talked about adopting through foster care and seeing if we could be matched with a child close in age to our oldest. As someone much more immersed in the adoption world, do you think you’d ever compile a video with resources aimed at families with biological children considering adopting through the foster care system?

    I am so glad I found your channel! It seems there are so few videos about adopting from foster care without necessarily fostering. We don't feel called to foster, but we most definitely want to adopt from foster care. We are researching now, but we really have no idea how to get started. We also have some things in our home that need to be fixed/replaced. I figured it'd be best to have that done before starting the process? Thank you for your videos! I'm going through a lot of them now.

      Thanks for watching! Honestly, you could contact an agency or the county now and see what to do about classes. The classes can take several months to complete, so you might be able to get home projects done during that time. I think it was close to a year from the time we started our classes to being matched with our daughter, so there is definitely time in between!

    We (hubby and I) chose our agency last week, had our Zoom orientation on Wednesday, and start training on the 11th of next month! We're planning to adopt a child that is 10 or older from foster care. We've done the fostering thing before and our county really isn't as well equipped as they lead us to believe. Crazy that it's been almost two years since we were FPs. 🤯 Thanks for such a great video! Any advice on how to parent a pre-teen/teen? Lol

    • @adoptinformed
      @adoptinformed  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Congrats! 😊 That is so awesome that you are looking to adopt an older child. Our adopted daughter is 2, and we are currently in the process to adopt a 5 year old boy and almost 10 year old girl...so I don't have much parenting advice for older kids yet 😅 although I am a middle and high school teacher! From that experience I would say parenting older kids seems to be about balancing freedom with responsibility in a way that is best for each kid. However, there is another adoption channel called "Be The Village" I believe and they foster teens...might be worth checking out!

    I think what I'm most worried about is that we are going to make it to the end of the licensing process and then be waiting for years/never get matched. We specifically want young kids, which I know is true of most families, and we live in a small state. Your story gives me hope that it will happen for us!

    • @adoptinformed
      @adoptinformed  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Are you able to be matched outside of your state? Our agency has done a lot of adoptions across state lines, so you might not be limited to just your state. So excited for you! And, don't worry....you will get matched 😊

    I’ve been binge watching your videos and learning so much from them. Was wondering if there is a middle option where you don’t want to fully commit to being a full-fledged adoptive parent but be more than a foster parent (something in between) for the late teens/older sibling groups waiting in the heart galleries i.e. kids that didn’t find an adoptive parent but are at risk of aging out of the system. Could you be a foster parent for them until they are 22+ or is there a guardian option? Is there such a thing that splits the difference between kinship/foster parent and fully adoptive parent or would you have to rely on foster placements instead of applying from the heart galleries?

    • @adoptinformed
      @adoptinformed  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      There really isn’t an in between option. I would recommend becoming a foster parent for teens and just continue supporting them even after they age out. This is definitely something we could talk through in a consultation if you are ever interested! www.adoptinformed.com :)

    relly informative. good job, Katie. question, can you pick a racein addition to age for adoptive placement?

    • @adoptinformed
      @adoptinformed  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, although we said we were open to any race/ethnicity...I think most adoptive parents say they are open to all, but you are allowed to say no.

    Thank you for making this video. I will say that my foster to adopt journey has been a long one. I am a licensed foster parent and have had three placements. But, I was not able to adopt any of them. If there are so many children in the foster care system in the US waiting for families, why am I having such a difficult time being matched with a child? I have submitted for countless children on adoptuskids and a family for every child. Maybe it is because I am single. I also want to adopt a girl. So, that could be why.

    • @adoptinformed
      @adoptinformed  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Foater to adopt can be such a hard route ❤ I think part of the problem is that Adoptuskids is such a popular database...I heard that kids will get hundreds of home study submitted when they are listed on that website. Amd oftentimes the kids on there have more "intense" cases, if you will. So you .ight not be contacted because your checklist and theirs don't match up. The other problem is that often times they don't want someone out of state to be adopting those kids where they want them to still be living close to siblings or other birth family. Before we were matched with our daughter we submitted our home study for a lot of different kids on there and heard back from almost none of them. You are honestly better off submitting to counties near by you, or at least in your state! Both of our adoptive placements were ones our agency social worker found through her research and connections she has in other counties. Saying a prayer for your adoption journey this morning! ❤

    My husband and I have been talking about potentially wanting to adopt a child from foster care. He was in foster care as a teenager and had an amazing foster family that he is still very close with, but his biggest concern in fostering or adopting a child from foster care is how it could negatively affect our two year old (biological) daughter. He has seen and experienced some of the trauma that many children in foster care have gone through, and his biggest concern is that we take in a child who ends up acting out against our daughter and potentially harming her. I don’t have any firsthand experience with the foster care system, but my mother was also in foster care as a kid and has these same concerns as my husband. I’m sure their concerns are completely valid, but from my perspective it seems like there are a lot of steps that adoptive or foster parents could take to avoid these types of issues. Do you have any thoughts on this, advice to offer, etc.? This is probably the only thing holding us back from pursuing adoption through foster care right now. Thanks for all the informative videos!

    • @adoptinformed
      @adoptinformed  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That is definitely a valid concern! I think it’s so helpful that you have people in your family who have experienced foster care to give that perspective. We adopted our youngest daughter first. When she was 2, we were matched with a 5 year old and 9 year old. The biggest reason we said yes is because we knew they had been around other foster children and not had issues with them. They also had been placed together the whole time in foster care and the older one was very protective and mothering to the younger. There have definitely been some frustrating habits she picked up from them at times, but I have never had a safety issue arise and they have now been with us for 2 years. If you are interested, I offer foster care adoption consultations if you and your husband ever wanted to talk about your concerns and make a plan that could best work for you. It’s definitely the best way to answer all of your specific concerns and questions, so I’ll include the link in case you are interested! www.adoptinformed.com/consultation

    We will be adopting our 2 foster kids, we have been their (foster) parents for almost 2 years. But I was curious if your daughters foster parents are still part of her life (like in a grandparent role)?

    • @adoptinformed
      @adoptinformed  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So, we don't see them regularly because they live so far away, but we visit them every so often. They are in their 70s so they don't really travel much. That means we go to them when there is a visit. COVID has made it extra hard this year, but I am friends with the foster mom on Facebook and she always likes and comments on posts and sometimes we message back and forth. And our daughter knows who they are when she sees them in pictures and we talk about them 😊

    When I’ve looked at the waiting child profiles in my area, most all have severe medical disabilities or are in their mid to late teens. Is that often what you see?

    • @adoptinformed
      @adoptinformed  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is more typical, for sure. But also those children are typically not the only waiting children in that area. This is why I really loved our agency because they reached out on our behalf to many counties in our state but also to other states as well. Our youngest that we adopted when she was 2 wasn’t even on any county listings.

    • @adoptinformed
      @adoptinformed  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm not sure if the actual application can be changed (definitely worth asking your social worker), however, you always can turn down a prospective placement, even if they fit the criteria you put on the application. We said no to several potential placements because we didn't think we would be the best fit for the kids even though our homestudy aligned with their needs.
