I had a go at this. With her quantities of flour my dough came out totally un-kneadable, and the yeast didn't take properly to the hot water. I used a brand new sachet of test, and I got this totally inanimate lump that I could do nothing with.

When did the UK go all metric? Funny to hear Mary give all her recipes in ounces and cups and temperatures in Fahrenheit when for years it's been grams, liters and Celsius.

After joining the EEC in 73. Although it wasn't really until the mid 80s it became much more widespread and I think the early 90s when it became mandatory to advertise product in metric measurements. There are exception, many of us still think in pints, many products are packaged in 1lbs instead of 500 and whatever the odd number of extra grammes that equates to etc.

Dough:
12 oz plain flour
12 oz wholemeal flour
2tsp sugar
2-3 tsp salt
1tbp oil
Yeast mixture
3 /4 of a pints hot water= 12oz
1tsp sugar
2tsp yeast

She said three quarters of a pint of water (12 ounces)....not 3 pints. That would be 1 ½ quarts!
