It is very expensive to make this nowadays, as berries are so expensive. I always make this with a bag of frozen summer berries - much more economical and widely available. Tastes delicious, especially with a dash of booze (or Ribena - yes, seriously!) added.
English food is very good and not overthought at all. All you need are good ingredients, a good cook and a good recipe of which there are hundreds; roasts, chops, game, terrines, puddings, cake, soups, savory and sweet and fish pies, seafood, the British heart attack breakfast and lovely Afternoon Tea with delicate sandwiches, scones clotted cream and jam and cakes with lashings of tea (no coca cola) . English food got a bad reputation in the 19th and 20th centuries because of poorly trained cooks, stodge and no time to prepare a proper meal by many hard-working people.
Summer pudding is delicious. I can do without the rhubard (though it and strawberries in pie is a New England favorite). Drain the liquid reduced for serving with the pudding.
3:29 Mary: Just keep an eye on those Judy. (Thinks: Judith Chalmers you’re an irritant! Get out of my space, woman!) Judy doesn’t take the hint whatsoever!
I was disappointed with the rhubarb I got in summer 2019, my pie was watery and bland, I have used the same recipe for years with great results but last summer was terrible. :(
Oh the video and lighting work is so terrible here food wise. That basket of produce at the beginning probably looked really vibrant and appealing in person, but on screen it looks bleh. I guess good food photography had yet to be invented.
This was 1975. Most people didn’t even have colour telly then. This was high tech for them days. We got our first colour telly in about 1977. It had 6 whole channel buttons when there were only 3 to choose from, BBC1 & 2 and ITV.
I agree. I make fruit pudding all the time, but we just take that fruit filling, thicken it a bit with cornstarch when we cook it, and the refrigerate it, so it's a nice, pudding consistency... and then pour a tablespoon of heavy cream on top, and crumble some ritz crackers.

rhubarb used to be in most people's garden, that's why MB said use it to bulk it out.
That's the Mary Berry I remember!
I use sheets of pound cake and angel bread for summer pudding
In 2020/21 Rhubarb in the discount supermarkets like Lidl produce 3 stalks of Rhubarb for £2.19. 3 STALKS.... Rhubarb certainly isn't cheap any more!
Yep but if you have the space and patience you can grow your own.
4:25 what the fuck

Everyone is complaining about summer pudding as if its supposed to look glamorous haha.
What is a slimming bread??

As Mary says…Not your mamma’s summer puddin!!! 🤣🤣
The mid-70s there seems to be an assumption that a lot of people were growing at least some food crops.
A proper berry pudding 😋
4:24 Weird noise
As this was made over forty years ago during a recession it would be reasonable to make some allowances for the quality of the food and the film.
I have never seen anyone measure tablespoons of water! :)
i wanna make this with THICK brioche and no rhubarb :3
Summer puddings, and Summer not.😁

The host is always murmuring or squinting in or doing something as if she's just about to expose the problem with it.
Rhubarb WASN'T cheap in 2019...£3.00 for 4 measly stalks 🤮🤮🤮

@@sean.furlong1989 I do love a good Rhubarb pie, Seán 😋
@@gaggymott9159 Me too! I always add some cinnamon or ginger. Delicious.
@@sean.furlong1989 Oh yes, both cinnamon for flavour and ginger for heat. Then some nice thick vanilla custard! 😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋
@@gaggymott9159 I want that now!
Rhubarb in summer pudding...are you kidding me?
Why not?
She's putting about $30 of fruit in this thing. And the bread is NO MATCH for it.

The video is really old - vintage!
Lol I love Mary Berry but that looks horrible 😂
It's one of those foods that doesn't look great but tastes good. I'm not the greatest fan of rhubarb though :)
The food looks disgusting!
Sorry...but you are not right!'
