    Gosh anyone who has time for this must be a busybody. Who else laughed at when Mary said ‘I’m told brown bread is no better than white and had no health benefits’ 🤣 ah the 70s...

      Because the readily available brown bread isn’t always whole grain. Normally brown bread is made of whole wheat, which would be the same as white bread, and the nutritional value would be quite minimal compared to the latter.

    There's something wrong with her hands even then, she must have suffered that condition for a long time.

      Tony Ferber She was hospitalised for polio in her youth. One arm is a bit underdeveloped compared to the other. I believe it’s her right arm that suffered from that bout of the illness.

      Fortunately such things are not a consideration these days as they used to be a couple of generation ago.

    Let's face it, Judith is pretty redundant here, no wonder she's so passively aggressively sarcastic.

      Is that Judith Chalmers? I wouldn't have recognized her. Can you imagine a presenter these days looking so incredibly bored??

    • @doubledeckers
      @doubledeckers 5 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      Everything is far too over the top these days with falseness and fake enthusiasm. Here Judith Chalmers lets Mary Berry take centre stage and occasionally voices a question that the viewer might be thinking. To me it seems extremely professional and watchable.

    Didn't think 'girlfriend' was that common to use for 'female friends' in the UK, especially way back then. I thought that was just a US thing.

    • @Daisyandchlo
      @Daisyandchlo 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, you're right. It definitely wasn't something a Brit would say in those days. Even up to middle 2000s.... It's only the internet and influence of the American English that's caused a change in the last few years. I can only think that either she'd spent some time in the U.S and picked up the lingo. Still strange though, as a girlfriend then was someone you were romantically involved with, so I'm not sure why Mary would put herself in what would have been a rather confusing position at that time. Unless the programme makers were hoping to sell some clips to the American market and told her to say it, so it would seem more acceptable. There's a few Americanisms in several of these clips, so it's strange but intriguing to know why.

    How times have changed! Fresh yeast not readily available, and ovens that you have to put a bowl of water in! I hope Mary has an oven with a steam function these days (like mine ;-)

    • @evag2726
      @evag2726 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, they mentioned in another video about only being 'allowed' to use a gas oven at certain times during the day due to the 3-day week at the time (UK), can't ever imagine that now.

    • @evag2726
      @evag2726 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You're still told to place some water in the oven to create steam for bread here in the UK, don't think many ovens come with a steam function but maybe it's just me.

    Be careful when checking the waters "hand hot" with your hand that's it's not boiling hot!! Jeepers I can't imagine TV cook's or Mary doing that today. Mary Berry is more of a British staple than Delia.

    Can't be too hygienic still having your rings on whilst kneading bread.

    • @funsmiling1132
      @funsmiling1132 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      What makes this so great is that she is a common cook...a cook like me. This is not designed and choriographed for a flashy 15 minute segment to promote a kitchen tool...it is to benefit everyday cooks who are watching the show.

    • @TRASHoftheTITANS
      @TRASHoftheTITANS 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @TheRenaissanceman65 It's not so much a hygiene issue as a contamination risk, as smaller pieces of jewellery could fall off during preparation and end up in the food. Bacteria that may have formed underneath rings could leach into the food, but this is less of an issue for food that is going to be cooked. That said, she's only making an example product, not cooking for people, so I don't think it really matters in any case

    • @TRASHoftheTITANS
      @TRASHoftheTITANS 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @TheRenaissanceman65 Not saying it's "ok", but it's hardly the end of the world. The segment was aimed at home cooks and busy mothers who probably wouldn't have had exacting hygiene standards at home. And it's a fairly minor issue anyway, it's not like she spat in the food or rubbed raw meat all over it

    • @TRASHoftheTITANS
      @TRASHoftheTITANS 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @TheRenaissanceman65 I'm not moaning at anybody mate. You asked a question and I gave you an answer. I've been totally civil with you, so the tone of your response seems a little uncalled for. I'm sorry you feel that I was being unpleasant, but I certainly wasn't.
