    I have always appreciated the sheer craftsmanship of leather bound, handmade books like these. But never had the chance to own one. Looking at the prices of these new deluxe editions - while quite fair by overall book standards, they simply do not measure up to the asking price.
    This being said I do feel like the regular hardback of many a tolkien books are quite nice.
    So while the ultra expensive deluxe editions do not carry the gravitas and level of sophistication I long for as vessels containing the monumental content within, the regular editons do carry enough heft and competence to justify their pricetags. And it does making reading tolkiens works satisfying on more of a budget. Especially for a new reader like me.

    • @brewingbooks
      @brewingbooks  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You certainly make an excellent point. I have found that the standard hardback editions of the last two decades or so have maintained a standard in quality (much better than the evolution of the recent deluxe editions)

    Top notch production! I love those rounded corners and the hubbed spine as well! I wish Harper Collins had done the same for TLOTR and the Hobbit too. Not that l dislike the recent deluxe illustrated by the author ones, but here you can easily see the difference. The only editions that come close to these two are the Easton Press leather bound volumes. Great video!

    • @stu356
      @stu356 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is no comparison between the quality of these and the recent editions, sadly. Although the spine hubs on these are still only decorative (like Easton Press) , rather than functional they are solid and wonderfully pronounced. The recent editions just have a thin card former for the spine and the hubs are hollow voids, pushed in from behind. It is the worst kind of fakery pretending to be a quality binding. I think of the recent editions as being like disneyland; attractions that look good from a distance, but don't hold up to close inspection. I can't say enough good things about these 2007/2009 super deluxe editions, though. I really wish HC would revisit this format -- though I wonder what price point they could hit to do so (maybe £500).

    Excellent quality Limited Edition books and commentary on their quality of construction, however their quality of construction would make for a sturdy and hardwearing travel companion of each book. It is a great pity that the these types of superior constructed books are not used as books and used instead as ornaments to be opened once or twice or kept on on display. Leather will, unless it is in a controlled atmosphere or possibly treated with cream, crinkle and tighten over time so better in my humble opinion to use the books and enjoy them before that happens.

      @brewingbooks  ปีที่แล้ว

      Great points 🙂

    • @stu356
      @stu356 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The construction is pretty much identical to the first prints of the corresponding deluxe editions they were based on. The leather is coated - it doesn't need treating and in fact can't absorb anything you might put on it. It is unlikely to suffer the same aging as an aniline leather which needs maintenance.

    I have both of these and I always felt the production quality was much higher on CoH. Clays did a reasonable job with S&G, but LEGO really knocked it out of the park with CoH. I think the two-colour foil really lifted CoH and the stamping on S&G was just a bit bland in comparison. That said, CoH has fake marbled end-papers and the S&G has genuine ones, so in that respect is a little better. These are far the best Tolkien books HarperCollins has ever produced - and S&G wasn't badly priced at release (introductory price of £250 later increased to £350). The last couple of hundred copies were sold for £200 by the Folio Society after HarperCollins had failed to find a market for them. CoH started at £350 (no early-bird discount), but they regularly had 40% discounts to try and shift them (and it took more than a decade to sell all 500).
    I doubt they will ever do anything like this again, given how hard they were to sell - I imagine the overall profit on the sub-par author-illustrated deluxe editions is far greater as they can shift many thousands of units without even having to care about them being decent quality. Times change, and these 2007/2009 editions should be cherished. I personally think they are better than the '22 Folio LotR in almost all measurable respects.

      It was just timing I think. S&G was the next new (not previously published) title to be published after CoH. I assume if they had sold better they would have continued to produce similar editions of other works. I'm glad they went with S&G - it is probably the best post-CoH posthumously published work. I actually think it is a better work than CoH in truth (though CoH is a better edition).

    • @brewingbooks
      @brewingbooks  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi 🙂 I’ve rechecked the paragraph you are referring to. It’s the way the sentences are grammatically structured. In the opening of this particular paragraph it states - in the present tense - that the rings are destroyed. But then it continued - in the past tense - how before the rings were destroyed Sauron re-emerged in Mirkwood before the events of the War of the Ring.
      It’s an interesting paragraph and certainly a good catch from your part though it’s quite clear that it’s meant retrospectively 🙂

    • @brewingbooks
      @brewingbooks  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Bookplates are usually individual sheets that are signed by an author and then glued onto the front page of a book. In this case, editor and illustrator signed on the actual page/book rather than an intermediary such as a bookplate - which makes it more significant imo 🙂

    • @-johnny-deep-

    • @stu356
      @stu356 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@brewingbooks That's not correct. The pages were signed and then tipped in. Particularly on S&G there have been issues where the book has been opened too wide and this can cause the tipped in signature plate to delaminate. It is glued along the gutter to the page in front. Neither CT or AL actually held these books. They are basically full-page bookplates. If you look at your S&G, you will see you can't open that page fully (please don't try!) - there is a 3-5mm strip that won't open. It would have been better if they had glued it onto a stub, but for whatever reason that isn't what they did.
