I’ve been reading from this for the last month and a bit (reached Letter 131 which is ridiculously long 😂). It’s such a delight! It’s got all sorts of fascinating biographical information but, more interestingly, the conversations about life, relationships and faith are a welcome surprise. I also appreciate any recollections of Tolkien’s amusing interactions with Americans lol

Amazon is an absolute disgrace when it comes to the way they ship books! I will spend my money with book sellers who care about my business, who value my return business and who ship my books with care! Kind of ironic since Amazon, the worlds largest book seller, treats their customers with such disdain.
I am going through that experience right now.
I keep sending the same book back to them; same thin paper packaging with damage inside and outside.
I've had the same experience many times!
This is terrible to hear from so many people ...
Also be aware some books ordered from amazon are NOT sold from the same publisher but sometimes printed on demand with terrible paper and a terrible smell. Had that happen to me two times. I will never buy books from amazon again and in general I try to buy from other sellers or when possible from stores.
I loved this expanded edition, here in Brazil this edition is such a big block. 😂❤❤❤

I fully understand your decision on not purchasing from Amazon again. Some years ago i received a broken package which contained multiple deluxe editions. Luckily enough no damage but never again I said!

Started my collection only a couple of months ago, things were getting out of hand, so I made a rule not to buy different editions of the same book until I have one of everything.
Fortunately, I don’t have a copy of Tolkien’s letters, so it’s fair game 😂

Have you seen the new editions of The History of Middle-earth box sets from Harper Collins? It's been quite some time since they released single hard back editions of the series, but it's finally happening. I'm pretty excited about it!
They look great, but I’m still not sure if I can justify their purchase at the moment … not to mention the long gaps between releases. But by the time they’re all released, it I’ll be time to launch a new edition 😅

Enjoy your videos. I recently bought the beautiful illustrated 4 volume boxed set of the Hobbit and LOTR after watching your video on it. Should I put those volumes in mylar covers? Will they fit in the box if I do? Or is mylar less necessary with a boxed set?
Where will you be buying books from? I'm curious what online sellers package books properly.
I've always found Blackwells UK to be quite considerate when packaging its books.

I have a paperback of tolkiens letters already. Do you think the added letters here are important enough to get the new hardcover?
Hi there! I would certainly justify the acquisition of this new edition. The addition of 150 letters is quite something, and while they may not reveal anything particularly groundbreaking, the wealth of information and detail on Tolkien's life and correspondence in general is something any avid reader should get access too.
Perhaps one could always wait for the paperback edition to come out.
How is the quality of the book itself? I hate Amazon for books. I got a boxset recently shipped in nothing more than a paper bag. Needless to say several corners were crushed. Thanks for the review! I always enjoy your thoughts.
Quality of the book is not bad - but quite standard. Pages are relatively thin, but it get's the job done. It's not a limited or collector's edition ultimately, so one should not expect a highly-polished quality of a book - but it can always be produced better, especially for what you pay for it.

The problem is not Amazon. The problem is the publisher. You do not address the PHYSICAL QUALITY OF THE BOOK, so I will: IT STINKS. The paper quality is barely one level above newsprint. Worse: the binding. The pages are not bound in individually sewn-in sections. Instead they are just glued in together like a paperback. The book will not stand up to a good reading without falling apart. Once again HarperCollins is hustling what amounts to just another overpriced shelf ornament. Better to wait for the paperback when you will get your money's worth.

@@brewingbooks Yet it was not always thus. My first American edition, which I bought off the shelf in 1981, is beautifully bound with high-quality paper that has stood up to multiple readings. There really were "good old days" in publishing. My library proves it. Standard hard-cover editions now are little more than glorified paperbacks.
