There have been suggestions that this album harks back to the band's prime time early 70's period. The song titles even suggest this e.g. Portable Door = Knocking At Your Back Door (okay that is '84), Lazy Sod = Lazy, Pictures Of You = Pictures of Home and Money To Burn = Burn. Okay this is a bit of a stretch but some of the riffs sound familiar. The band have produced an album that is sharp, to the point, energised with less 'progressive tendencies of say Purpendicular and Now What?! although the final track Bleeding Obvious is multifaceted. Simon McBride is a more 'straight ahead' player than Morse and is reflected in the more concise song structure. Reinvigorated and re-energised this is a powerful album that is however sympathetic to Gillan's more restrained vocal delivery. For me Ian Paice is the star turn with his best drumming performance in a long time. Just listen to A Bit On The Side and Now You're Talkin' (my personal favourite). For those stating 'no Blackmore no Deep Purple' (sorry Michael) are missing, in my estimation, the band's most creative period under Morse in terms of song structure arrangements. This album should appease those who mourn the passing of prime Deep Purple of the early 70's, at least in commercial terms, whilst simultaneously creating a modern 1,2,3 punch of an album that is more immediate than anything the band has written since maybe The Battle Rages On?

It is a pretty good album, for sure. McBride brings a bit more 'Hard Rock' vibe to DP, but a lot of us aren't ready to christen him as the new Blackmore or Morse, quite yet. The songs are very good and Gillan still does well in the studio. Live is another thing, unfortunately. Their playing is superb, as always and even though it is a bit mid-tempo, they pull it off quite well. The fact that the vinyl is a 45 rpm record, should help the sound quality, although I don't like changing speeds on my older, JVC Quartzlock turntable, as it can be a little fussy. I'll get the album, since they are my favorite band and I have almost everything that they've released, other than a few odd-ball special releases that are hard to find and the lifeless Turning To Crime. Either way, it is a very good album and it shows that they can still put out quality music.

IMO, if the album was shorter by two-three weaker songs, it would have been the best album since Perfect Strangers. Saw them live a two weeks ago, and they were great.
Nice video. For me the most disappointing part of the album (CD for me) is the cover art. The tunes are great, and it sounds like a natural progression from Whoosh! which I also loved. As for the cover art, they've been there and done that with a White Album replica: "Now What?" was close enough. The inside art could have easily made cool cover art work. I'm grateful to Deep Purple for continuing to make these rockin' albums . . . and hoping Aerosmith has another Hard Rock album to get out
I'm sadly in the minority here. I don't like this album. I haven't liked a Purple album since Perfect Strangers and the only Morse album I don't mind is Perpendicular. This album for me is very middle of the road with every song having a similar tempo. But lots of others are digging it so I'm happy for them and for the band.
Sorry, but no Lord & Blackmore no band. Mark II was the best line up, Mark III a close second. Even Mark IV was as close as DP came after to be DP, but the band split - up and Bolin died months later. The Mark II lineup regrouped in the mid - '80s showed some flash but by '89 Gillian left a second time. When Gillian came back in the early '90s Blackmore was finished and washed his hands of DP, basically because of the fraction and tension with Gillian going back to the mid - '70s. Bringing Gillian back ten years later really was a mistake, another strong singer and Blackmore I think would of stayed 'alot' longer and the band would had achieved some of its early glory. But with all do respect to the musicianship on this new album, especially with Ian Paice the last original still there, the songs I heard didn't Rock me like DP once did, talkin' Mark II & III(did see the original DP with Evans on vocals and Simper on bass with the rest of the core band during the 'Shades of Deep Purple' era in May '69 in Providence, Rhode Island) Gillian is what the band needed after Evans left in mid - '69 and those two albums 'In Rock' and 'Machine Head' are those two special classic Rock albums. Even 'Burn' with Coverdale was great, but when he left the magic for me was gone, and I'm a Big Led Zeppelin Fan. No I wasn't impressed with what I heard on the new DP album even with Gillian, Glover and Paice. Sorry DP fans but that's what I heard or should I say didn't hear on the new album. If this is the final curtain call for DP(remember Paice ain't getting any younger pounding those skins and touring at his age, and when he stops playing DP will be in my mind a Really Good Cover Band) But if this is DP swan song I have the perfect eulogy to sum up the bands demise and yes I believe Gillian is that reason(he is one of the great voices in ROCK and Frontman) my eulogy is simple, "Might just take my Life", ironically that song was sung by Coverdale from the 'Burn' album. Jon Lord 🎹 R.I.P. 🙏
I haven't listened to ANY album all the way through since about 1979. Who still does that at 65+ years old? I guess maybe if you're stuck at home and can't go anywhere maybe....
Inspiring they put out music they wanted to make not the compressed noise passing for 'gawbagge' I...sorry, 'Rock' muzak, eh hem. Just heard Lazy Sod (also a Sex Pistols tune @ka Seventeen.'
Well micheal you need to replace a person in the band with the same talent level as the rest of this band this is & always have bin an impressive rock metal band, if you compared zep, sabbath, purple talents are very compatible to each other there is no denyingthis throw the drummers in the air it’s close, bass, same guitarist also very close ( one is a great song writer, one great lead guitarist, the other a little of both so greatness is there just need to pick the right one but overall I agree it’s a very good album ( when really there is nothing out there that is turning heads or ears ) & they are one of the older bands that still know how to rock ( not useing backing tracks or AI. ) so let’s applaud them for still being Deep Purple !!!!!
130 million lps sold. 1973 the biggest band in the world in gate receipts and lps sold. Repeated in 1983. Not bad. Rip Jon Douglas Lord. Gillan is 78 holly shit. Ritchie Blackmore was a top 3 guitarist in the world in his day. Lord Blackmore Pace are hard to replace. Especially Ritchie Blackmore.
When you compare the young Morse in 95 with McBride now you realize, that McBride is very good, but Morse was a genious like Blackmore. McBride couldn't have replaced Blackmore back then. Morse could.
Just listened to it. I went all the way through, didn’t care about lyrics, or song titles, just listened. I liked it, sounded like Deep Purple all the way thru. I think that Ian Pace is the Deep Purple sound. He doesn’t get the recognition that he deserves.
2 or 3 better tracks but overall a disappointing album for me. Feels a bit restrained to me . More of the same like before with great musicianship but the songs are generally meh. They need a new producer after Bob for the past 5 to get a hard rock sound IMO as this to me is comfortable progish rock. I really hoped that Simon would have been unleashed more on this album but not to be. Love Paice as much as ever. Bought my first Purple album "In Rock" in 1970 so its been a journey.
I’ve loved DP but =1 is a disappointment Gillan clearly has given up on singing. From possibly the best rock vocalist ever, to talking his way through an album; what a descent! Listening to the tracks; one of them sounds like Uriah Heap and another could be a Rainbow B-side, nothing stood out to me. The first time I listened to ‘In Rock’ and then again in ‘Machine Head’ I was bowled over. I’ve listened to ‘Made in Japan’ a thousand times and still do. Machine Head was the reason I took up guitar. But this album sucks. Without Lord and Blackmore they were going to struggle, but this is a new low.
Agree. The magic ingredient was always the combination of Blackmore and Lord. They produced the timeless classics. Without both of them that incredible level can never be reached and what we have had since is a very good rock band making average to good rock albums and entertaining people with good shows but never again scaling the heights reached in 70s.

Mike how come you never did a review of the latest Uriah Heep
Perhaps because the last Uriah Heep is very good performed, has solid songs - of which not a single one remains in my memory after I have heard it?
The last song from the record was best !
Inspiring they put out music they wanted to make not the compressed noise passing for 'gawbagge' I...sorry, 'Rock' muzak, eh hem. Just heard Lazy Sod (also a Sex Pistols tune @ka Seventeen.'
"Lazy Sod" is the best song Purple has recorded since "Burn"......
HAHAHAHA whew that's a good one man... wait, you're serious?

Now You Are Talking is by far the very best track ! Period ! 😊😊😊 No doubt about it ! That said Morse was never my cup of tea 😢
Paice is still in the band.
@@rainbowdeep9234 yup only member from 1967. Only drummer in Purple.
@@Fuxerz 1968* Deep Purple were formed.
@CB-xr1eg Yes, I have mrk 1 lps. Just letting the fans know how big they were in the day. I saw them in 73 and 74 mrk 2 and 3 then with Steve Morse.
Not repeated in 1983, the band didn't get back together till 1984.
The covers album was a misstep. Now, they're back on the great 2003-20 trajectory.
When you compare the young Morse in 95 with McBride now you realize, that McBride is very good, but Morse was a genious like Blackmore. McBride couldn't have replaced Blackmore back then. Morse could.

😮 Wrong!!!!!...
Bleeding Obvious ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐1/2

I just knew this was a cut that 4 and 1/2 stars wasn’t gonna fly with everyone Kojack! ❤
@@MichaelNoland-TheBottomLine "Lazy Sod" is a 6+ star. Best Purple song since "Burn"....
No Richie Blackmore? It's not Purple without the 3 greatest guitarist like Hendrix & Duane Allman or Jimmy Page.
So remind me, when were the 3 guitarists you listed, ever in Deep Purple?
An Interesting album in today's mediocrity
Try Uriah heaps latest album colors one of the best albums in the 2000s
@@mikekeeler6362 Sea Of Light is better. Heep*
Just listened to it. I went all the way through, didn’t care about lyrics, or song titles, just listened. I liked it, sounded like Deep Purple all the way thru. I think that Ian Pace is the Deep Purple sound. He doesn’t get the recognition that he deserves.
Paice*
@@CB-xr1eg sorry, didn’t look it up, kinda felt I was wrong when I wrote it. Still a great drummer, should be at the table with the greats.
Better!
It's good but not as we hoped...
AT least you are being honest. What WERE you hopeing for if you don't mind me asking?
Did you just call him “GLOW-ver”?!?!?!
He did once but later he said it correctly.
No Rod Evans.
No Deep Purple!
Oh ffs give it up. I hope you're joking.
I like the guitar and the keys/organ but they are not enough to save the record. Time to retire.
To me the best Deep Purple Sound was In Rock, Fireball and Perpendicular
I’ve loved DP but =1 is a disappointment
Gillan clearly has given up on singing.
Please say which tracks you mean when referring to Uriah Heep* and Rainbow
you just have to open your heart and ears... still expect 80 old man to sing as 25? C'mon
@@A-Man-Alive He's not 80. Not even 79 yet...in a few days.
It sucks.
It is not good at all.
I didn’t like it…. Deep Purple should stop producing average stuff for money…! Simply boring…
Regrettably I agree with you.
Agree. The magic ingredient was always the combination of Blackmore and Lord. They produced the timeless classics. Without both of them that incredible level can never be reached and what we have had since is a very good rock band making average to good rock albums and entertaining people with good shows but never again scaling the heights reached in 70s.
And yet it's reached Number 1 or 2 in most countries.🤷♂
@@CB-xr1eg That is not true. It's done well reaching number 12 in the UK.

Respect to Deep Purple, always a REAL band who actually still play LIVE. Their new guitarist is fantastic. I think most albums work best when they are about 40 minutes long or so.
@@LarryGravesCanadianStudmuffin Morse in the 90's was better. Now it's too late. They should have asked Blackmore for a few shows and then retire.

MK VIII, IMHO.
For years now, we've been off by one MK. LOL
The brief lineup w/ Joe Satriani (with no DP studio album) really shouldn't be bestowed with a, MK. It should be earned with at least a studio album (ie. Come taste the band or Slaves and Masters). =1, is the MK VIII lineup. Not that it really matters. Maybe this requires a poll. 😅
@@micolsen9824 Well as far as I'm concerned Slaves & Masters shouldn't even count as a Deep Purple album. It just isn't one. I don't care if it's Ritchie's favourite or not.
@@micolsen9824 Actually it doesn't really matter to me since I quit listening to any "new" stuff since the Perfect Strangers 1984 tour and album which were both a real letdown for me after seeing them LIVE in 1972 and 1974 when Deep Purple ruled the rock world..
