Brendan I'm so happy you brought this up, after listening to =1, I personally find the DP Prog Rock Albums my Best. IN ROCK FIREBALL PERPENDICULAR BANANAS RAPTURE OF THE DEEP NOW WHAT INFINITE =1 1 Song Now You Talking
One of the most difficult tasks, is ranking all the Deep Purple albums. Here's just one example, their debut album, "Shades of Deep Purple" is given a ranking of #22 out of 23 from our host. However, legendary keyboardist Rick Wakeman proclaimed, Shades of Deep Purple as one of the 10 best UK albums of the 60s. Something to chew on.
We disagree on almost everything but I'm so glad you show so much love for "Come Taste the Band", such a unique and exciting album! What a shame that mark IV didn't manage to release another studio album! Along with "Fireball" my 2 favorite DP albums!!!
I started listening to DP around-72 and I was very disappointed with CTtB when it came out. It did not sound like DP anymore and I liked only half of the songs. I liked Ritchies Rainbow album a lot more. I haven’t changed my mind but I hear the potential. I feel the album was rushed, Bolin didn’t get the time to compose enough good songs and the others did not contribute enough. As I understand, Glen Hughes was not even there, instead he was doing drugs. With more time and contribution from the other members, I think this line up could have done great things. Alas, that was not to be.
I started listening to DP around-72, that’s why I put the albums from the sixties higher in the ranking, I never expected them to be a Hard Rock or Heavy Metal group at that time, they were in fact called a progressive rock band at that time. I think tBoT and DP3 are very good albums, combining pop and rock with jazz and classical music. In fact, when albums like Stormbringer came out, DP were criticized for not doing that and dropping down to the level of mediocre bands like Status Quo and Black Sabbath. That’s what critics thought about music at that time.
I have to say Slaves and Masters remains one of my favorites, probably because I love that 80s metal sound in the production. The reason 80s sound good is because it's high energy, gets the adrenaline pumping, and it rocks hard. That's not popular with today's ballad music from today's introspective soul searching culture; then again culture is engineered to be that way, while the 80s sound remains instinctively better. when you says "80s" that's a compliment folks, "80s elements" = great music. It's definitely my favorite among the Ian Gillian absent albums, even though I love David Coverdale on Whitesnake. I'd rank Perfect Stringers, Machine Head, In Rock and Who Do We Think We Are as better, and inFinite and Now What as equals. Thanks for your review
It’s difficult for me to rank their albums, but my top ten is as follows: 1) Machinehead 2) In Rock 3) Fireball 4) Burn 5) Come Taste 6) Perfect Strangers 7) Purpendicular 8) Who Do We Think 9) Stormbringer 10) Battle Rages On
Great show on my favorite band growing up. For me, Burn and Stormbringer hold a special place in my heart listening to them when they first came out. Stormbringer doesn't get a lot of love, but I love every single song from beginning to end. My #1 would be either Burn or Machine Head. My favorite Deep Purple album with Morse is Purpendicular. Their new album =1 is absolutely fantastic and definitely one of their best.
This is only one band with many mark members , and I love all these albums .Amazing band.Hats off for Deep Purple , Long live rock n roll . Band number 1 for me .Best band in the world!!!
This was just what I was looking for, the last album i bought was perfect strangers, I then heard SOMETIMES I FEEL LIKE SCREAMING, which I thought was one of the best purple songs, I've seen a couple of reviews for the new album and they have been really positive, I played it this morning and thought it was good after only 1 listen, so I'm looking forward to see where you place the later albums.
Great ranking. I agree with your #1. I bought it on 8 track when it came out. Loved then and I love it now. A lot of really good albums in their catalog.
Thanks, Brendon! Enjoyed listening to this. Glad to see you like the Come Taste the Band album as much as I do. I don't care for the Ezrin-era of albums as much as you (though I like them), but I do really like the new one. I haven't listened to the new album enough to rank it, but would probably rank it after Abandon. I like doing mine in tiers, this is how I like the Deep Purple catalog: 1. In Rock 2. Machine Head 3. Fireball 4. Come Taste the Band ------------------------------- 5. Who Do We Think We Are 6. Burn 7. Stormbringer 8. Perfect Strangers 9. House of Blue Light 10. The Battle Rages On 11. Perpendicular 12. Shades of Deep Purple 13. Abandon 14. Deep Purple --------------------------- 15. Infinite 16. The Book of Talisyn 17. Now What?! 18. Bananas 19. Rapture of the Deep 20. Slaves & Masters
Perpendicular is my personal favorite as it's the album that turned me from a casual listener to a fan... and i find it pretty close to a prefect album! Now What also ranks quite high for me too. Of course In Rock and Machinehead are absolute classics!
Always nice and interesting to see some different opinions about Deep Purple. My top 3 would be: 1 - Fireball, 2 - In Rock, 3 - Purpendicular ! I also praise CTTB a lot and rate it higher than Burn.
I have to admit that i’m a 1969 - 1976 Deep Purple fan. Never been a huge fan of anything that came after. 9) Who Do We Think We Are 8) Fireball 7) Stormbringer 6) Machine Head 5) Made In Europe 4) In Rock 3) Come Taste The Band 2) Burn 1) Made In Japan
If you dig into the Steve Morse era with an open mind, you might find you really like it. It's hard to compete with the nostalgia of the music we loved in our youth.
My number one favorite album by Deep Purple as far as ranking all of their albums, my number one favorite is: perfect strangers! When the number two lineup reunited for that album, I went to see them back in 1985 and they really blew my mind off of my head when I saw them the first time during that year!
Brendan for me that would’ve been a hard ranking to do because I pretty much love all their albums with the exception of the one that you had on the bottom which was the covers album. They did better covers on their first few albums than they did on that last one. Now, as far as live albums, go for you, I would suggest made in Japan, which you’ve probably already heard and also another live album. That was really good with. I think the mark three lineup is made in Europe.
I love most of the obvious Deep Purple classics, but I an also a fan of Rainbow. I like "Perfect Strangers" "The Battle Rages On" and the under appreciated live album, "Nobody's Perfect." Yeah, Joe Lynn Turner made "Slaves And Masters" Rainbow like, but it is a fine album, beautifully recorded, definitely one of their most commercial sounding discs. It was a late attempt for mainstream success that failed at the time. Great vocals, great production and outstanding playing by Richie Blackmore. I still play the CD often.
A bit too soon to tell, but I'd probably put the new one around 9th or 10 place, behind the most obvious classics and just below 'Now What?' and maybe 'Purpendicular'. 'Come Taste The Band' is easily the Purple album I've played the most in the last decade or so. Not saying it's the best one, but it probably helps that while all the songs are excellent, there's no 'classics' or radio hits that have been on all compilations, or played live after 1976. So it still feels somewhat fresh. The remix on the anniversary reissue is great, too.
It's nice to see a list where all albums are ranked. I know there are some which doesn't count the Steve Morse-era albums or even anything after Come Taste The Band. I think people can like what they like but to discount reality is a bit strange (albums DO exist no matter what you think of them). I would personally rank the Mark I-era albums a bit higher though. I hear you on the on many other choices. I think many judge Bananas on not having Jon Lord on it, the silly cover and that it came at a time where the band didn't get much attention (=1 has gotten far more attention than Bananas ever got, for example). Whilst I wouldn't rank Bananas as high as you.. It's far better than many make it out to be. Keep on rocking!
Interesting ranking, Brendon. i wouldn't rank Stormbringer so low. In Rock is a better album than Fireball so i would change those out but i agree with your number one. Just my personal take.
Thank you for your interesting take on album rankings, not that I totally agree! However, from a DP live perspective, I rank as 1. Made in Japan 2. Concerto for Group and Orchestra, and 3. Made in Europe.
I think Purple is like Rush , really depends when you come into them perhaps ? For me I love Fireball , then Come Taste The Band , then In Rock , Machine Head ....., Stormbringer , Perfect Strangers ..,
1. Made In Japan (the band at heir best) 2. In Rock (that was the band saying this is who we are) 3. Machine Head (every song is great, but maybe a bit formulaic) 4. Stormbringer (it has a great feel to it) 5. Deep Purple (Chasing Shadows & April) 6. Perfect Strangers (we're back!)
My 1968-76 album rankings would be: 01)- Fireball, 02)- In Rock, 03)- Machine Head, 04)- Burn, 05)- Come Taste The Band, 06)- Deep Purple 07)- Shades Of Deep Purple, 08)- The Book Of Taliesyn, 09)- Stormbringer & 10)- Who Do We Think We Are.
I LOVE PURPENDICULAR!!!!!! My top 15: 1. Machine Head 2. Fireball 3. In Rock 4.Who do we think we are 5. Purpendicular 6. Come taste the band 7. Burn 8. Stormbringer 9. = 1 10. Perfect Strangers 11. Infinite 12. Naw What!? 13. The hause of the blue light 14. Slaves and Masters 15. Abandon
I'm glad you don't give the Satriani era a mark. 👍 No album, no deal. MKI ~ original lineup MKII ~ classic lineup MKIII ~ funkysoul lineup MKIV ~ T. Bolin time MKII (b) classic reunion MKV ~ Rainbow time MKII (c) 25th anniversary MKVI ~ Morse/Jon Lord MKVII ~ Morse/Don Airey MKVIII ~ Airey/McBride What a ride.
Agree with your classification. Actually, it's a strange situation with Satriani. According to official website information, he was a member of the band, but in fact, he was only a touring member. On the posters of those years it was written: "Gillan, Glover, Lord, Paice, FEATURING Satriani." After the tour, he turned down the offer to join the band. He played only 8 shows in December 93 and 30 shows in June 94. Not enough to official mark, as I think.
The covers album was recorded during the pandemic and lockdown. It was something for the band to do because they couldn’t tour for the new album Woosh at the time. So they didn’t just squeeze it out for no reason. And it was nice to get an extra album. Personally I just don’t like the cover songs they chose and how they chose to cover them. The album doesn’t sound like Deep Purple to me.
Lots of labels stop having sales certified because it costs the label to have it done so unless it’s an album that matters they probably have let it slide. Not that I think the album has sold 10 million copies but it’s probably higher than just 2 million.
In Rock (my favorite album by any band) will always be #1. #'s 2 through 5 (today) would likely be: Fireball Burn Now What Purpendicular Machine Head (unfairly, perhaps) ranks a little lower for me because I prefer it's tunes much more on Made in Japan. While it's still early, I think i'd rank =1 behind the rest of the (non covers) Ezrin albums. I like them all, but do prefer the Proggier elements that the others have.
I personally think that the first few albums of Deep Purple are extremely underrated. Even the cover versions are very unique check out their version of Help. Maybe they could’ve done more albums with Tommy Bolin, but as I understand it, he was kind of messed up with his addictions
Have you heard the recently released remix of Machine Head by Dweezil Zappa? It's the best the album has ever sounded and he did some interesting editing things to make it a different listening experience. Everything is clearer and the mix really jumps out of the speakers. As for your ranking, I think you are mostly in line with my opinions. The only major disagreement I have is placing Who Do We Think We are so low and Come Taste the Band So High. I gave CTTB a few listens a little while back and really tried to get into it, but it just didn't land for me. Glenn Hughes is a talented huy for sure, but I'm not a huge fan of what he brought to Purple. In an alternate universe I would like to see what would have happened if they had replaced Gillan with Coverdale but kept Glover on bass. Maybe Ritchie wouldn't have become frustrated and left.
The reason The Battle Rages On flew under the radar was because Ritchie flat out refused to do ANY promotion for it. He refused to do band pictures for the back cover. BMG wanted to do a couple of videos...Ritchie refused. But the 1993 tour was, to me, the best Deep Purple tour of all time. The setlist was great and the sound was fantastic (...apart from Gillan, of course. The man should have retired in 1988).
My personal fav studio albums: 1. In Rock 2. Machine Head 3. Burn 4. Fireball 5. Perfect Strangers 6. CTTB 7. WDWTWA 8.Stormbringer 9.Deep Purple III 10. The Book Of Taliesyn.
No, I’m not into doing song countdowns. I’ll do album rankings but not song rankings. I did try one for Scorpions. Of course, never say never, just not for now.
Going to see them about 20 minutes from my house in New Hampshire on August 28th. I agree with most of your rankings especially the bottom tier. I don't dig those 60's albums!
I wonder you have Stormbringer so low?!? Especially as you have Burn and CTTB very high. It's easily within my top 5 albums. Love Mk 3 and 4, the groove and funkiness of these albums.
Agreed on DP not being Metal. So tired of people calling them a Metal roots band. That goes to Black Sabbath, Judas Priest and even Scorpions to some degree. DP was Hard Rock/Boogie Rock no matter what others say. Great ranking video!
I never knew that Guns n Roses were inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame before Deep Purple and Cheap Trick!!! Guitarist Slash publicly complained and you guessed it, Deep Purple especially and Cheap Trick were finally put the The Hall!!! I automatically thought legendary bands like those were shoo ins!!! As a matter of fact Lars from Metallica gave the induction speech for Deep Purple because of how much they influenced his life and musical aspirations. Thought I'd share that story!!! Side note, my first album from Purple was Perfect Strangers. I still Love It!!!
One slight correction: the inclusion of Simon McBride makes for the MK IX line up of the band. Many forget that mark VI were Gillan, Glover, Paice, Lord and Satriani, (yes Joe Satriani). He replaced Blackmore to just help finish up the remainder of live shows the band had to do
Satriani did not join the band and was a touring member only. Therefore it’s not one of the Mark line-ups. Simon McBride’s is in fact the Mark VIII line-up 👍
Not according to the band. Satriani himself said he turned down the offer to join because he didn’t want to be compared to Blackmore. Bottomline, he wasn’t a member and the Mark line-ups are related to members of the band.
Well according to Deep Purple official website, the current line up is in fact mark IX - not sure what your sources are Brendon. Chapter 10 2022- ( Mark IX ) In 2022 came the sad news of Steve Morse’s departure due to personal circumstances. Moving forward, Deep Purple sought out the masterful skills of guitarist Simon McBride and played the year out in style, exciting crowds with a new energy and excitement.
Highest on list: Machine Head, In rock, Perfect Strangers, The battle rages on, Rapture of the deep, Infinite............. so many. I would put Come Taste the Band at the bottom of the list by far.
1.-in rock 2.-perfect strangers 3.-come taste the band 4.-machine head 5.-burn 6.-infinite 7.-the house of blue light 8.-rapture of the deep. 9.-bananas. 10.-now what 11.-the battle rage on 12.-purpendicular 13.-=1 14.-fireball 15.-stormbringer 16.-deep purple 69 17.-Whoosh 18.-who do we think we are 19.-the book of talyesin 20.-shades of deep purple 21.-Abandon 22.-Slaves and masters
1-Machine Head, 2- In Rock, 3- Fireball, 4-Perfect Strangers, 5-Burn, 6-Stormbringer, 7-Who Do We Think We Are, 8-House of Blue Light, 9-Battle Rages On, 10-Slaves & Masters, 11-Purple Passages(mk1 comp). Note, the music for Slaves & Masters was already written before JLT turned up.
Studio albums 1) In Rock 2) Machine Head 3) Fireball 4) Burn 5) Perfect Strangers 6) Who Do We Think We Are 7) The Battle Rages On 8) Stormbringer 9) Come Taste the Band 10) Deep Purple Live 1) Made in Japan 2) Stockholm 1970 3) Live in London 1974 4) In Concert 1970-1972 5) Made in Europe 6) Stuttgart 1993 7) Live at the Olympia 1996 8) Nobody's Perfect 9) Long Beach 1971 10) California Jam 1974
Do you give each album a listen before you do these rankings? I know I'd have to before I could even attempt something like this. I love how you always list an album higher up on your lists that mostly have a bad rep in the general public.
I know the albums inside and album so I can do the ranking with or without listening but I also like to listen while I’m putting the rankings together because I love the band so much.
My Top Ten 1 Machine Head 2 Who Do We Think We Are 3 Burn 4 Bananas 5 Perpendicular 6 Whoosh 7 Fireball 8 In Rock 9 Come Taste The Band 10 =1 Bananas and Perpendicular are very underrated albums.
In Rock, 1 made in japan, 2 machine head, 3 burn, 4 fireball, 5 who do we think we are 6 perfect strangers 7 stormbringer 8 come taste the band 9 deep purple 10.
After listening to =1 for the better part of a week, I’m ready to do my new ranking to see where it slots in. Not including live albums or compilations but am including the covers album, (which I quite like). 23. Bananas 22. Rapture of the Deep 21. Abandon 20. Turning to Crime 19. Infinite 18. Now What 17. The Book of Taliesyn 16. Deep Purple 15. Shades of Deep Purple 14. The House of Blue Light 13. Whoosh! 12. Purpendicular 11. =1 10. Come Taste the Band 9. Perfect Strangers 8. Who Do We Think We Are 7. The Battle Rages On 6. Fireball 5. Slaves and Masters 4. Deep Purple In Rock 3. Burn 2. Machine Head 1. Stormbringer.
I think for me In Rock would be number 1, and Perfect Strangers number 2. Machine Head is mainly only number 1 typically because of Smoke on the water. But Deep Purple are much deeper than that.
Kudos man...really great choices...
Thanks Andrei!
Hey Brendon. Great rankings episode of DP. MY favorite is Perpendicular. I liked DP back in the day but have recently got more into them.
Great podcast , so glad you showcased this awesome band 🤘
I'm sure this was a tough one. Definitely gonna add some of these. I have probably half. New one is definitely sounding killer. Thanks for ranking!

Wow, jewel cds! Congratulations!
For me '=1' the best album since Perfect Strangers, love it❤
It’s an amazing album! Completely blown away by how good it is.
Definitely not better than Slaves and Masters, The Battle Rages on and Purpendicular.
Oh man...what a masterpiece...
Really good album. I'm grooving on it in my car
We disagree on almost everything but I'm so glad you show so much love for "Come Taste the Band", such a unique and exciting album! What a shame that mark IV didn't manage to release another studio album! Along with "Fireball" my 2 favorite DP albums!!!

I agree about S & M
Wow,I agree with so much of your list
I would love you to do a Thin Lizzy album ranking. It would be interesting from an American side of point of view. And very much appreciated.

I'm glad you don't give the Satriani era a mark. 👍 No album, no deal.
MKI ~ original lineup
MKII ~ classic lineup
MKIII ~ funkysoul lineup
MKIV ~ T. Bolin time
MKII (b) classic reunion
MKV ~ Rainbow time
MKII (c) 25th anniversary
MKVI ~ Morse/Jon Lord
MKVII ~ Morse/Don Airey
MKVIII ~ Airey/McBride
What a ride.
Wring That Neck totally rocks!
Agree on your top 3 and, notably, your bottom pick. When you're capable of Whoosh and =1, why squeeze a covers album between them? Thanks for the vid!
My personal list
1 Fireball
2 Who Do we think we are
3 Machine Head
4 In rock
Greetings from argentina
merci pour la video vue DEEP PURPLE 3 fois en concert dont 1 fois avec john lord groupe magnifique vive le rock
😄=1 is such a great album! Its hard to believe a band can up with such original stuff
Wait..Machine Head only sold 2M in the US..i thought by now it would've at least reached diamond status
Lots of labels stop having sales certified because it costs the label to have it done so unless it’s an album that matters they probably have let it slide. Not that I think the album has sold 10 million copies but it’s probably higher than just 2 million.
@@BrendonSnyder Machine Head doesn't matter?dude it's one of the most iconic albums of the 70s and a must have for classic rock fans
Agree with most but I would put Stormbringer into the top 10. Maybe because that's the album got me into music. Nice work.
Brendon, could you do a ranking of the Joe Lynn Turner solo discs? He has quite a few.
Nice job B. Beast
In Rock (my favorite album by any band) will always be #1.
#'s 2 through 5 (today) would likely be:
Fireball
Burn
Now What
Purpendicular
Machine Head (unfairly, perhaps) ranks a little lower for me because I prefer it's tunes much more on Made in Japan.
While it's still early, I think i'd rank =1 behind the rest of the (non covers) Ezrin albums. I like them all, but do prefer the Proggier elements that the others have.
Bananas is very, very good. Saw them on that tour.
I personally think that the first few albums of Deep Purple are extremely underrated. Even the cover versions are very unique check out their version of Help.
Maybe they could’ve done more albums with Tommy Bolin, but as I understand it, he was kind of messed up with his addictions
What at Purpendicular? One of my top 3 DP spins.
I agree on most of those, specially the top 3.
Deep Purple in Rock, Machine Head, Perfect Strangers and Burn
In Rock is a pretty great album indeed
I don't care for perfect stranger but fireball is a better album I like perfect strangers when it first come out but to me it's dated
Hey man I thought Deep Purple were all dead by now …. They have a new album ? Hope I can get it on 8 track that would be wicked pissa !
Joshing around a little , don’t have the covers album or =1 yet , but all the rest … for me Rapture of the Deep is awful!
My personal fav studio albums:
1. In Rock
2. Machine Head
3. Burn
4. Fireball
5. Perfect Strangers
6. CTTB
7. WDWTWA
8.Stormbringer
9.Deep Purple III
10. The Book Of Taliesyn.
Any chance of a top twenty DP song list? 🙏
Post Lord and Blackmore I'd say Infinite. Time for Bedlam sounds like a classic lineup song
Slaves and Master is top 5 album from Ritchie Blackmore. Who are you to rank it like 19th album???
Love your review but “Who Do We Think We Are”belongs in the top 5 IMHO!
I wonder you have Stormbringer so low?!? Especially as you have Burn and CTTB very high. It's easily within my top 5 albums. Love Mk 3 and 4, the groove and funkiness of these albums.
That's a fair list, I'd swap Stormbringer with CTTBand. =1 is too new for me to rank.
Agreed on DP not being Metal. So tired of people calling them a Metal roots band. That goes to Black Sabbath, Judas Priest and even Scorpions to some degree. DP was Hard Rock/Boogie Rock no matter what others say. Great ranking video!
They ve created Heavy Metal too. No way out. They ve played so many genres very well and they are true masters of overall music.
No. 1. Come taste the band. No. 2. Machine Head.
1 Come Taste the Band
2 Burn
3 Stormbringer
I know it's a live album, but Made in Japan is neck and neck with Machine Head as my two favorite DP albums.
😎👍
One slight correction: the inclusion of Simon McBride makes for the MK IX line up of the band. Many forget that mark VI were Gillan, Glover, Paice, Lord and Satriani, (yes Joe Satriani). He replaced Blackmore to just help finish up the remainder of live shows the band had to do
Satriani did not join the band and was a touring member only. Therefore it’s not one of the Mark line-ups. Simon McBride’s is in fact the Mark VIII line-up 👍
@@BrendonSnyder well, when I looked it up, he’s listed as an actual former member of the band and not just as a touring musician
Chapter 10
2022- ( Mark IX )
In 2022 came the sad news of Steve Morse’s departure due to personal circumstances. Moving forward, Deep Purple sought out the masterful skills of guitarist Simon McBride and played the year out in style, exciting crowds with a new energy and excitement.
@@AlexandreTherrien-i6lYou're absolutely right.

Now What is my favorite Steve Morse era album.
Good ranking but i don't have any albums after The battle rages on
There are so many good albums after Blackmore left. Don’t miss out.

Machine Head will always be my favorite album by Deep Purple
1) perfect strangers
2) now what?
3) perpendicular
4) in rock
5) machine head
On what planet is Battle Rages on above Purpendicular? It has TWO good (great) songs.
Apparently on this planet….and as I explained it has at least 4 stellar songs….not just “two” 👍
Personally, they're two of my favorite Deep purple albums. Been a fan since 1972.

Hi Brendon i enjoyed this Video Only thing i would say i Class DEEP PURPLE as heavy rock AND not Heavy Metal I LOVE THE BAND
Yes and in the video I said the same thing. I did not classify them as Heavy Metal. I only said they are one of the bands that pioneered it.
@@BrendonSnyder Hi Brendon and Thanks and Fair Enough love your Channell
Gotta go In Rock as my favorite
=1 at #7
I think for me In Rock would be number 1, and Perfect Strangers number 2.
Machine Head is mainly only number 1 typically because of Smoke on the water.
But Deep Purple are much deeper than that.
I believe machine Head is sold 37 million copies at least that's what I recently found out
No thats incorrect. It’s only sold a little under 3 million.
