    How I got a 4.0 GPA in my comp science degree:
    1) Aim to be smarter than your professor
    2) Read you text book(s) cover to cover (or the chapters required for your course)

    I don't understand why I lack so much motivation, I don't dislike school more than the average person or anything. It's just once I'm at home I just don't feel any pressure to complete homework or revision.

      Stay at school and study. also, If you feel like studying is hard, try to tutor someone less smart than you. Just find someone you know is struggling, befriend them and then talk about school with them. if you do that, they usually will talk about how they are struggling in the class. Then ask them if they want you to help them by tutoring them. If they are serious about school, they usually will say yes. Tutoring someone will force you to study and learn.

    I think it's so important and I loved how you started the video by addressing mental illness. Mental health does need to come before everything else because if you don't feel good on the inside, you won't have motivation to do anything, let alone study. I'm taking a semester off now because of depression and I'm finally reaching out. so thanks for that

    I hope that by the time you graduate you're able to get over your social anxiety and learn to handle group work. Life after college is nothing like college and social situations, whether it's with your boss, peer, or team is probably one of the biggest factors that everyone has to face. How you present yourself to others, how you work well alongside others is something that I wish college would have pressed on more. Also, getting an A or a 4.0 is great, but the real understanding of achievement comes when you realize perfection is not possible in real life, and you don't get graded at work. I highly recommend people find a part time job, internship or summer program during their college years so they aren't completely shocked after college (which happens to a lot of ppl!) Best wishes in your college success!

    Really great tips! My 'method' of maintaining my 4.0 is to work backwards. So, at the start of the semester I look at the unit outline, and then work out where I need to pull my weight and really apply myself. I then plot this on a calendar to prevent a burn-out on assessments with a small weighting.

  • @laurendelgado3249
    @laurendelgado3249 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    This was helpful but I think it depends on your major. For instance, in hard sciences you have less leniency on just dropping and picking up other classes. This was a nice overview of courses you want to take. But if you're in the social science/humanities you have more range of options versus a Chem/Bio/Physics major. I appreciated the video though but I'm a in STEM so a lot of these ideas don't fit well within my college experience but they can cover a good amount of people!

    • @mokshlakshmi
      @mokshlakshmi 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lauren Delgado Very true! I am pursuing a STEM major, and feel that they're binding on a student's schedule, and require a very different approach to learn! The video was well explained though :)

  • @gabriellamontez8056
    @gabriellamontez8056 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I will personally agree with everything expect the idea of changing of your classes. Here in the united states, when you choose a major in university, you cannot decide which class you want to take. There's four years in university: the first 2 years are for your basics, the last 2 years are classes for your major. For your basics, you can choose any humanities, upper division course or language that you want to take. Expect that you have to take a certain a math class and a english class based on your ACT or SAT scores. For your major, take it or leave you have to take the courses listed on your degree plan. If you hate a class that's your degree plan, too bad. As a psychology major at ENMU, I have to stats 213 and it sucks bad, but I have to take it to pass and move on and take experimental psychology 337 I and the second part of experimental in the spring which would be 338 II. If I don't pass 337 I, I have to wait until the fall semester to take the class again because it's on a class rotation. When on a degree plan, you cannot decide if you want to take the class or not. You can choose to take it online or at campus. But that's it.

    • @jenkrovyu3381
      @jenkrovyu3381 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Gabriella Montez what do you.mean you can't decide what you take??? is my uni that weird, because other than the core of my MAJOR I can take literally anything I want to...it's technically required you take one class in each gen ed section, but that's why you take the CLEP if you're not interested in x gen ed subject, or just take the intro course of it if you can't place out...I'm pre-mad, medical lab specialization, with a Japanese major as well and I take random classes that interest me or fit my schedule. my first 2 years were one semester of gen eds, 4 semesters of my Japanese major, my last 2 was all my med lab classes and 1 yr more for the required internship but i had plenty of flexibility especially with the summer semester (most mls majors just had a year gen eds and 2 of major classes and their last year, 4th, was the internship. i had an extra year because i couldnt fit everything with those two very different majors😅). I guess you're stuck in a block and HAVE to graduate in 4yrs maybe there's not as much flexibility but past your major requirements and the 6 to 10 gen ed classes, there's usually quite a bit of wiggle room to get the amount of required credits to graduate. I know business degrees are very strict in when you take things and what you take but most majors jst have recommendations and give you the freedom to study things you want -that's the point of college, finally being able to choose what you learn..though that's very flawed in the states and still has pointless general requirements but you should still have room for other areas of interest outside your major.
      I'm just curious if uni here have all different crazy ways of doing things, since what you said is so different that what I'd experienced, that's all.

    • @tigermason7624
      @tigermason7624 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I also am able to pick and choose for the most part. My major and the arts degree itself has a few core papers which are a bit of a drag and that you HAVE to do, but for the most part you can choose whatever papers you want for your major/minor and obviously electives.

    • @seafarer_
      @seafarer_ 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well I think she also might have meant that if you don't like that professor or section, you should change to another professor's class of the same course. But yeah, when it comes to core classes, it's expected that your major classes are required, but sometimes you can find a better professor.

    I came here at the beginning of the semester, got motivated, and slacked off anyway. I was at a 3.0 two days ago, now I'm at a 3.2. If I get the grades I want and think I can get through finals, I will be at a 4.2. If I get that 4.2, it would be a miracle and I would be so happy I would probably cry. I'm really trying to do well on my finals which are on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of this upcoming week. I hope I do well. I'll update on how I think I did on Wednesday. When my grades are updated in January, I will also update. Please wish me luck on my finals.

    Hi Sarah!! I'm new to your channel and I love this video! I just had one question. When you meet with your professors before an exam, what kind of questions do you ask them? I want to become friends with my professors, but I don't know what to ask or say to them

      I agree with Nuong. Whatever concepts you don't understand, just ask your professor to explain them in brief. Also, make sure you complete your assignments on time.
      I have a great impression on my professors and they all respect me. The only problem is, I cannot meet their expectations since I always screw up in my exams :(

      I'm taking a physics course right now from distance and I can tell you that the best things that are working for me are:
      1. While you read, write the main idea of the paragraph in your own words.
      2. If your career involves mathematics, practice a loooot. Watching classes on youtube works too.
      3. Don't be afraid to ask.
      4. Try to procrastinate the least.
      5. The "pomodoro technique": study 25 min, then you have a break of 5 or 10 min (up to you), then study 25 min, break 5 min, study 25 min, break 5 min, study 25 min and then "lunch" for "15 or 20 min". The idea is not to sit there for an hour because you'll lose concentration. During the break times, don't think about what you're studying, distract yourself and then come back to your study session. You'll need discipline and you can repeat this pomodoro as many times as you'd like :D

    I agree with everything you're saying. I have had a 4.0 GPA for a long time.The way I do things is; I study right after class for each course while the information is fresh in my head. I always take lesser classes normally so I can put in the quality of work required. During study sessions I read the text book then go over the key points of that chapter and practice explaining the concept aloud in a way that I can understand then talk with the professor and tell him what I understand about the concept to see if I am explaining it correctly. I usually look for great teachers who notify me what to expect on exams and papers. I have taken a full course load and have still maintained really high GPA. However, it's difficult and leads to inefficient study sessions because you have to find a way to focus on all of your classes. Some classes happen right after each other and the work load conflicts with each other. At my school I live on campus and I was told I had to be full time or I would lose my housing. Being full time caught up to me this semester. I took 5 classes. I received a 98, 96, 88, and an 85 in 4 of my 5 classes. in the 5th class I received a 79. I have one exam left.

    Thank you for the tips! Very useful! It's time for me to actually start focusing more. Even tho i have relatively good grades i am not a straight A student. So, kids at school always hit me up with the classic "you're Asian, why don't you have straight A's?" (。-_-。) stereotypes.

    I think you generation Z people are going to have to deal a lot with anxiety, specially if you are not very extroverted and social, since you are so exposed in the social media and constantly judged by how popular you are or how many friends you have, it's the society of the image instead of the soul. I had a little social anxiety myself, but it almost never gave me a problem, but I am sure that if I had been born in 2000 for instance, the pressure would have been completely unbearable

    Yes the pen! But I hate G-2s lol! Pilot acroball every day!
    You're so wise. It took me a year of struggle to realize I need to take care of myself and my anxiety first... I wish I would have taken the year off instead of trying to handle a depression i didn't know I had and try to begin university. I've conquered it now and I'm a more confident, positive, productive, and balanced person, but it was difficult. It feels nice to know I'm not the only one. Yes go to class! Yes don't overload! Id say it's more important to select a professor that teaches in the way you learn. Do not be afraid to ask questions. Use every resource you have. always be early. read in the text and even take notes before lectures. make sure to to take time to study out and expose yourself to the material every day. Having a comfortable and cute study spot or desk is a necessity for me. And listening to instrumental piano or electro pop music while studying helps me so much . I use a binder for each class split in sections of notes, reference sheets, labs if applicable, homework, tests and exams, with the class schedule in the very front. For exam study I read through all my notes then go through practice questions then go through homework assignments and revise before turning them in. And I take my notes Cornell style with colored pens on grid paper.

    omg sarah please do a video on tips for studying philosophy! im in my first week of uni, taking two majors, and one of them is history and philosophy of science. im basically enrolled in three philosophy classes this sem AND they're all level 2 (meant to be taken in year 2 but im taking them in year 1 as i have credit exemption and i can skip like 90% of first year subjects). have never studied philosophy before, its a completely new field for me. i find the content really interesting but what concerns me is all the terminology and the essay writing process. its bound to be very different from what ive done so far (which was a mix of business, marketing and education in the arts). maybe tips on that as well as advice on a new philosophy learner and just how to study the subject effectively and correctly? i think it'd be a great help to others in my situation as well (:
