These are proving to be EXACTLY what I've been after! Great work man! I'm tearing into my xv750 virago at the minute. Hadn't been cared for for about 3 years! Your "budget style, but prepared to put in the elbow grease" is just like me 😉👊🏼🏍💯

Doing really well there Mark, many would have walked away seeing the amount of rust on that bike! Chipping away bit by bit it's amazing the difference you're making!

So pleased you're doing a virago 250, I wanted a boulevard 800 and seen your review around a year ago, decided to start smaller and work my way up... ended up buying one of these. I'm now stripping it down and sorting it out too, started on New Year's Eve so your timing couldn't be better for me. Thanks loads, looking forward to the rest of the series!

Ste - Can i ask what year Virago you bought? I have found a 1996 version and i am seriously considering making it a similar project.

For the pitting of metal just get the rust off and treated then use a filler primer and sand it smooth. The pitting I see can easily be filled in with a filler primer and it will save you time and energy trying to smooth out the metal. When I do electrical I use painters tape or masking tape and make a label for both sides of the connector of either what it does or a number. Hope this helps and good luck. Keep up the great videos.

Just for next time Mark, when your in Bunnings they sell what they call 'Cleaning Vinegar' I suspect it's a lot stronger than the stuff we eat.
    Enjoying your efforts.

That's a ton of rus mang .. as a lifelong Virago owner I can say that it takes a hell of a lot for rust to start forming on these bikes.. solid little machines.

I've used Scotch Brite pads on corroded cylinder cooling fins. Doesn't take long to knock the corrosion off and make them look nice.

Nice video mark 😀 a funny story i have is i had a rusted shifter an used viniger floor cleaner to de rust it, i completely forgot about it an 2 weeks later i remembered an bugger me dead there was just a little bit of steel left the size of a 50c peice lol with your speedo housing i would just put a few dabs of clear silicone between the housing an speedo, it will hold nice an secure an will also stop some of the vibration through the housing to the speedo. Good luck mate great work. Mark Dillon

Buy some bi carb soda for doing the alloy, it does dull the chrome but if you are painting it it doesn’t matter
It’s not as harsh as glass beads
You can buy little packets from coles, Safeway etc. or go to a pet stock store or something similar you can buy it in bulk
Works great on alloy Will clean the engine cases up real good and washes away in water

Hi Mark, if you find an old record player, at 16rpm it makes a great turntable for spraying smaller components. You don't have to turn the thing yourself or move around it. It works really well and op shops often have old turntables, plenty on ebay too.

Hey Mark. Another great video. Like said here in comments.. Coke for removal of rust. works well. Tin foil for polishing Chrome. Use the Dull side.. Use the tin foil with coke (dip the tin foil in coke and rub) Cant wait to see how the bike turns out.. (Would have chopped the Virago into a café racer lol but a Bobber is also cool)
    Cheers till next time..
Ps. Love Nays Punisher chairs... and the choice of blinkers and stop lights are great.

Oh yeah.... PPS..... Look at Rustoleum paint for truck bed lining... It is super strong and gives a textured finish... Looks awesome on rims and covers those pesty pock marks.. Spray the spokes with the Satin enamel and the rims with the Rustoleum Truck bed lining paint...

I haven't seen your board, but you should probably change that crank case breather hose, it is cheap and by the looks of that bike it has probably not been changes. Actually any hoses you find should be changed while you have the bike apart.

Bloody fantastic job bloke ! Have you tried using aluminium foil ( wrapping sandwiches etc ) on the wheel rims to remove the pitting . I reckon with a bit of elbow grease they may come up great , just saying .

You've worked your arse off this week alright, good work. I know the vinegar is cheap, but have you tried straining it through potato peelings & straw to filter the rust out, so you can use it on your fish & chips :-0

I honestly thought there wasn't enough vinegar on the planet that would take the rust of that manky piece! haha
I actually quite like the pitted look; it gives it an industrial vibe about it. Continuing the industrial vibe, have you considered the Rust-Oleum Hammered Paint range? You can get it at bunnings and I have used that paint for various bike parts with great success. Just a random thought; I don't know if that's the type of look you're aiming for.
I didn't catch it, but did you re-grease the speedo drive?
I like the idea of the brake lights being like devil's eyes, maybe a spray of nite-shade to give it that 'evil' look?
Awesome video Mark; it feels like I'm there building the bike with you! haha

  • @andypandy.

have you thought about taking the spokes out of the rims to give them a real good sand to getting the rust and pitting off? it will be a pain, but it will be a pain either way, and with them all removed you will be able to really get into them..... Bloody love the way it's turning out mate, the budget build with no corners cut to doing it right!!!!

if you use thin supper glue that runs like water and use bicarb soda or baking soda put soda to form a gusset around the edge of plastic and metal washer drop thin supper glue it will go rock hard and watch out for the smoke

Progress! You might want to think about taking those wheels apart entirely for cleaning and painting. Lacing them back up again is not hugely difficult (a lot of good tutorials on youtube), and great satisfaction with learning a cool new skill!

I'd be using your sandblaster on all that real rusty stuff , rust will otherwise still be 'living' inside those pits and the blaster will get em all back to fresh bare metal .., thats what it's ideal it's for and the rust will blast off much easier than that paint that was on your wood heater.
..., then ASAP after the sandblasting , i'd etch prime the bare metal (lightly) , followed by a primer coat then your finish black coat .
I prefer to always use two pac paints , as (an amateur) I have found they are easier to spray and go on in a single application , as opposed to multiple (and temperamental) coats of acrylic that are needed ..., but that's up to you what you decide to use .
Just remember that you can paint acrylic over the top of two-pac paint - but you cannot paint two-pac over the top of acrylic paints because it wil lcrack as they both have different flex characteristics.
Make sure you finish off each coat with 600 wet n dry between your coats for a nice paint bond and clean with oil and wax remover (and preferably a tack rag) before spraying the next coat.
