The asthma segment in this video is incorrect. You do not need a TUE for inhaled salbutamol (albuterol), salmeterol or formoterol when used in permitted doses. The current prohibited list states that athletes are permitted to administer inhaled salbutamol (in divided doses not exceeding 1600 µg in 24 h and 800 µg in 12 h), formoterol (≤ 54 µg in 24 h) and salmeterol (≤ 200 µg in 24 h) [12] without a TUE. Inhaled corticosteroids do also not require a TUE.

Hate to say it, but rightfully so he shouldn’t have raced because the paperwork hadn’t gone through yet. Also, if there was an alternative that was just as effective he should’ve taken it so that he wouldn’t have to send in a TUE (I think that’s what it’s called)

Your point about TUE is wrong! Amateur athletes do not require a TUE before competing, as there is no way the system could cope with all those applications. If you are an amateur athlete and you are tested, you must apply for a TUE in retrospect (where necessary). There is however a time limit to apply for a TUE in retrospect (i think it is 2 weeks??), so amateur athletes are advised to be prepared by having supporting documents ready in advance. It is a common misunderstanding, partly due to misinformation like this!. When in doubt, do your homework and read the rule book. Unf. this video contributes to the misinformation, so I suggest taking it down or correct it!

Do you care to share the source of your information? After reading your post I read and re-read the USADA TUE Policy and there's nothing in there that suggests that a RCTUE (for recreational competitor, i.e. "Amateur") can be applied retroactively (5.d). In fact, it's pretty clear (in 5.d.2) that it's expected that the RC "has submitted a completed TUE". The Policy goes as far to say that a RCTUE "may not be accepted in an International Event or National Championships". I believe the requirements to get an RCTUE may be a little less stringent than other non-RC athletes (as in 5.d.3-4) but there's nothing in the policy stating that RC can submit retroactively. www.usada.org/wp-content/uploads/tue-policy-1.pdf

Also, pls refer to the ITU Anti Doping Rules 4.4.4.3: “If ITU chooses to test an athlete who is neither an International-Level nor National-Level Athlete ITU shall permit that athlete to apply to his or her National Anti-Doping Organization for a retroactive TUE” (For the meaning, of ‘International-Level Athlete’ and ‘National Level Athlete’, you’ll need to read the document).I recall that my governing body advised Age Group Athletes >do not< require a TUE in advance of competing at the ITU Age Groups. When in doubt, your National Governing body, should be able to answer any questions you might have.

@@clebertduarte after a bit more reading, it appears USADA’s requirements (for amateur/recreational athletes) are different to ITU requirements. In particular, USADA has an RCTUE system and a TUE pre-check form. UKAD do not have RCTUE’s or a TUE pre-check form. British Triathlon follow ITU rules regarding TUE’s in retrospect. (The time limit to apply for a TUE in retrospect is 5 days after receiving notice of substance abnormality in a test result). I think this explains the difference; and also it explains why some British Athletes incorrectly think they need to apply for a TUE in advance, when they do not.

Even though caffeine is on WADAs “watch list” it may be important to know that caffeine is a banned substance in NCAA competition. The concentration of caffeine in a tested sample cannot exceed 15 micrograms. This means that the athlete would have to drink about 6 cups of coffee shortly before testing.

That's pretty wild in regards to the apheresis (plasma donation). Clinical lab medicine is my field when not doing tri training and transfusion medicine falls under our area of expertise. I supposed they banned it because there are anticoagulants in use when the blood is put back into the body (obviously to keep blood from clotting). I can imagine that it would be easy enough to slip in some other drugs during the veinous return portion of the donation. Platelets and red blood cells can also be donated on an apheresis machine.

I think the big one is cold medicine for pro athletes. I think that's the one that could be an easy slip up if the pro athlete isn't well educated on what they are allowed to use. And t the key is the expectation that these "pro triathletes are well educated on the subject mater" and Starky was perfectly well educated and aware of the rules. So thank you Taren for helping educating all of us on these issues. The more that people know about this stuff the less accidental mistakes we'll have in our sport.

In Germany, the national anti-doping agency has published an app that can help with ingredients in medication. Others should perhaps join in too. I am of the opinion that everyone at a world championship (e.g. in Kona) should undergo a doping test after drawing the qualification slot. If the result is positive, the rolldown has to be done afterwards. After all, dreams are not only bursting by doping for professionals.
    Stay Safe and clean! 🤙

Applied for TUE. Raced while paperwork was being approved. TUE was then denied. So he raced with unapproved drugs in his system on the assumption he would retrospectively be okay? One heck of a risk to take as a professional athlete. Even if it was approved would they have back dated his approval?

TUE process/procedures for AG aka non testing pool athletes varies by country. In Canada some drugs require the TUE beforehand like Testosterone. Some you apply for the TUE retroactively such as ADHD medications (only apply if you get tested). This saves the CCES from an insane number of applications from non elite athletes.

Where did you find the information on insulin? Without it you die. Being a type 1 diabetic for 30 years on a pump im taking it 24/7. Somebody taking it that isn't diabetic or a diabetic taking more than they need at that time would find it debilitating not enhancing. Besides I'd like to know how they would test for it since everyone has it in their bodies.
