    Great vid.
1 more to add: fear factor. I've seen people panic at the start of a tri because they didn't realise that a lake has currents and even waves, plus the fear of not being able to see the bottom and/or swimming through fish or weed.

Scariest thing that happened during my first tri was someone inadvertently swam over the top of me and pushed me under. While underneath, seaweed wrapped around my leg and I thought I was about to get trapped. After that, my goal changed from "get a good time" to "finish safely." Tri swims are chaotic and can be very scary. Be sure to go a speed that you're comfortable at during your first.
You're probably not going to win your first triathlon. So just be safe and enjoy it. As long as you get through, you're going to get a PR!

Well explained Taren!!!!! As open water swimmer, I use to train in the pool using a lot of pull buoy and paddles. Much more than a pool swimmer. It really works very well for me for improving endurance and strenght.

I'm just digesting some of the things you talk about in this video, and your last one on triathlon swim, as I watch the women swimming in the choppy water of Kona this morning. Really good stuff, Taren. Thanks for your videos. They are good training advice, but also changes what I see when I watch pro racing!

Greg Paltrinieri's technique looks the same whether in 1500m or 10k km

Question: I take your point re leg kick but if I don't use my legs much I get calf cramp. I take Mg supplements and I'm doing exercises to build calf strength but what else can i do?

Question on the 2 swim caps. Why not just put goggles under (instead of over) 1 swim cap? What am I missing?

My take is that the silicone band of the goggles holds well against your two rubber or silicone caps., staying very secure.
The worst case scenario is that on of your cap breaks or gets lifted by violent water you still have one. Remember they are mandatory in a race

Wish I could retrain my brain to breathe bilaterally. It just feels "wrong" and I just end up waterboarding myself....Maybe something for the offseason.

8:16 What does he mean by "only breathing every 20-30 strokes"?

Taking a guess here but I think he meant "sighting".

I'm faster swimming breaststroke in open water than freestyle 🤷🏻‍♂️
