  • Digitized from the Lp shown above, released jointly by Melodiya and Eurodisc in 1976. Sixteen Waltzes, Op. 39 is a set of 16 short waltzes for piano written by Johannes Brahms. They were composed in 1865, and published two years later, dedicated to the music critic Eduard Hanslick. Almost all of the waltzes are in a recapitulating binary form. For each waltz, the first half moves to the dominant, the relative major, or a substitute key. Then, the second half begins with a developmental passage that leads back to the main theme and the tonic.

Johannes Brahms (German: [joˈhanəs ˈbʁaːms]; 7 May 1833 - 3 April 1897) was a German composer and pianist of the Romantic period. Born in Hamburg into a Lutheran family, Brahms spent much of his professional life in Vienna, Austria. His reputation and status as a composer is such that he is sometimes grouped with Johann Sebastian Bach and Ludwig van Beethoven as one of the "Three Bs" of music, a comment originally made by the nineteenth-century conductor Hans von Bülow.

The harmonies of Brahms are always thrilling! He seems never at a loss for a melody, bar room or not, and how he transforms it is genius indeed! One usually recognizes the music of Brahms; nonetheless, it is never predictable. He takes the listener to places unexpected, whilst weaving lovely countermelodies throughout. His rustic roots are evidenced in his compositions as well as the sophistication of his harmonizations. To comment loosely on his musical form, they bear repeating!

This is Brahms! Thank you for uploading. They were husband and wife and play with one heart, one mind. Victor Babin and Vitya Vronsky, also married, played the same way.

The rendition by two virtuosi is so intimate and perfectly synchronized that it sounds almost like being performed by one person. Thanks for the valuable upload with the highest possible sound quality!

Victoria y Gennady fueron matrimonio, y tal vez eso produce el efecto que aparenta como si fuera solo un pianista interpretando. Encuentro realmente muy buena la ejecución: Gracias a David por esta puesta.

Commenting on the music of Brahms seems irreverent to me. I think he is one of the pillars of music of all time.
I just want to say that this version is one of the most beautiful I've ever heard of this piece that I've studied and played all my life in two and four hand versions.
