- Hi guys! In today's video, Jonathan and I spoke only German for 24 hours and it was hilarious. We also are excited to announce a HUGE challenge that we are starting December 1st.
Although we moved from the United States to German a while ago, our German language skills can best be described as "good enough to get by". And the thing is... now that Jack is in German Kita and we are building a house in the Black Forest, that's just not cutting it anymore. Now THAT is the way to gain the respect of all Germans by learning the language in such a manner. After I spent a few years in Germany and got the lingo down, I had an American Student friend come and study in Heidelberg. He learnt German for years. He had book German knowledge and knew the grammar better than me but he used to struggle to get the words out to speak fluid sentences. It was a pure headache situation for him but he persevered and became more fluent than me within six months. Keep this up and enjoy enjoy enjoy! You guys will be very fluent within a year at the rate you are both going. Also I loved how you corrected your speech in the sub-titles!
Thank you! We would love to be fluent one day. It is important that we do it for Jack. Speaking German will be such a major part of his life and we want to be able to converse with him and his friends. ❤️

Once he is in Kindergarten he will learn German real fast, even if you would only speak english at home

Au weia! Das kenne ich nur zu genau...ich habe vor langer Zeit mal mit meiner ex Frau Tina viele Jahre in den USA gelebt. Auch wir hatten *Englischtage*... no german language was allowed at all times!

Tina and me are divorced by now but we still are friends. And when we meet or phone 2-3 times a year....our language is a mixture of english und deutsch!

Ich habe mich köstlich amüsiert über euer Deutsch. Ich finde es toll, eure Aussprache und euren Mut. Also, ich bin mir sehr sicher, daß wenn ihr jeden Tag deutsch sprecht, wird es schnell sehr gut.
Mein Englisch ist katastrophal. Es reicht um immer wieder nach Hause zu kommen.
This is a good way to practice the language. When I traveled to Munich last August or to Berlin in 2013, I tried to speak German as much as possible without the aid of Google Translate or switching back to English. At a restaurant in Munich, a local person who was also dining there said I speak it very good. He was actually surprised that a US tourist could actually seak the language. I explained that most people in the US learn Spanish to finish their foreign/classical language requirements in high school or college. Furthermore I had to explain that not all US high schools offer German (mine didn't).
Oh, I could feel that headache you mentioned at the end in my bones. Soooo stressful at the start to speak nothing but your foreign language all day. Glühwein always helped, though. 😄
Yes! So when I first moved to Germany, I took 4 hours of German classes in the morning and then worked all afternoon around German-speaking colleagues. When I came home at night I felt completely drained. Although, it really made me appreciate how intensive the language learning experience was.
"Es ist gleicher als Glühwein..." => "Es ist ähnlich wie Glühwein, ..." ginge hier auch.
By the way: There is a big difference between "als" and "wie" which many Germans do not get right neither.
"wie" is used, if you are comparing something similar. "Etwas ist gleich hoch / gleich schnell / gleich lang wie etwas anderes.".
"Als" is used, if something is more or less as something else. "Etwas ist höher / schneller / länger als etwas anderes".
"Ich laufe schneller ALS mein Freund." vs. "Ich laufe genauso schnell WIE mein Freund."
If you get that one right you are already doing stuff better than at least 40-60% of the native Germans in the south I run into ;).
Und um es gesagt zu haben: Klar waren da ein paar Fehlerchen dabei, aber habt ihr wirklich super gemacht :).
This is really helpful! Thank you so much for explaining and giving an example. This sounds a lot like the words 'similar' and 'comparable' in English.
@@TypeAshton Yeah, it's comparable to "better than" = "besser als" versus "as good as" = "so gut wie".
to make it a bit more difficult: he is more well known as dancer than as singer.
In german: Er ist bekannter als Tanzer denn als Sänger. (it would be weird to say: Er ist bekannter als Tanzer als als Sänge)
Es ist schon recht gut, auf welche Weise Ihr Deutsch sprecht. Das Ziel ist erreicht, wenn niemand mehr merkt, daß Englisch Eure Muttersprache ist.
Ihr drei seit einfach *mega* sympatisch! Ich habe B1/B2 Niveau in Englisch und kann mir jetzt gut vorstellen wie es sich für euch anhören muss. Tolles Video!.weiter so. :-)

Kudos for trying this and congrats, it most definitely was not "eine komplette Katastrophe", quite the opposite!
I would advise you to do this more often, maybe one German Only Day once a month. Doesn't have to be on camera but it will most likely give you a lot of practice.
One last minor thing, Jonathan, you don't have to be formal with your audience ("Sie"/"Ihnen"). At least not with me - you can say "you" to me ;-😉

So, from now on, werde ich nur noch deutsch kommentieren. Ihr macht das schon sehr gut. Vor 44 Jahren kam ich erstmals nach England und hatte die gleichen Probleme wie Ihr, nur mit der englischen Sprache. Jede Sprache ist ein Abenteuer und es gibt ständig etwas Neues zu entdecken. Perfektion sollte nicht Euer Ziel sein. Das wird Euch Euer Sohn in wenigen Jahren ohnehin voraus haben. Also, gut gemacht!
Ich freue mich, weiterhin auf Deutsch zu antworten 😊 Wir freuen uns darauf, besser zu sprechen. Wir können andere sehr gut lesen und verstehen, aber ich habe das Gefühl, wenn ich auf der Stelle zum Sprechen gebracht werde - mein Gehirn geht einfach aus.
Wenn wir ein weiteres Update-Video zu unseren Sprachfortschritten machen, können Sie hoffentlich einige Verbesserungen hören.
@@TypeAshton Amerikaner hier - es ist gut, als Anrede - zum guten alten 'Sie' - was auch früher groß geschrieben wurde - zurückzukehren. Das alltägliche 'Geduze' ist nicht so schön. Warum? Weil nicht alle unter 30 sind.
American expat here - I find it is a good thing to address Germans with 'Sie' - non existent in English - because the German 'Du' seems to be prevalent nowadays - not so cool, in my opinion. Why? Because not everyone is under 30.

Ja, es hat Spaß gemacht! One note about kids and two languages: we raised our son bilingual from day one - my wife spoke her native German and I spoke English. Our son used to get VERY upset when we would speak to him in the “wrong” language. He even catagorized visitors immediately into the appropriate language group and wouldn’t accept it if they tried speaking to him in the other language. I would be interested to see how Jack reacts when you try German on him.
Keep up the good work! You have a lot of the short idioms down pat. Most of your mispronunciations come from “reading” the words using an American-English algorithm instead if a German one. That gets better the more you speak with others (“holding you accountable”) as time goes on. So get involved with more native speakers und viel Spaß dabei! Cheers, Doc.
That's so interesting! We have done a lot of research on this recently and will be making a video covering our plan soon.
There are a lot of words that sound almost accent free, here. Congrats! I wonder if you get tought the more invisible things of German. Like, when you speak colloquially the "the" is mandatory before names. You write "Ashton drinks wine", but you say "the Ashton drinks wine".
This is something we fail at quite often. I think it will be come more natural the more we speak German.
In the North, virtually no one ever uses articles with names. Sounds weird to my Westphalian ears personally, but then again they live in the South so I suppose this is solid advice.

Ihr sprecht beide wirklich sehr gut. Ein kleiner Tipp wäre statt „so“ „also“ zu sagen („Jack hat morgen Geburtstag, ALso backen wir…“. Und anstatt „this“ wörtlich mit „dieses“ zu übersetzen, einfach „es“ oder „das“ zu sagen. Man versteht euch natürlich auch so, aber mit den beiden Änderungen klingt es natürlicher
"Jack denkt, das ist alles für ihn." Da hat's mich weggerissen. :D
Zwei Sache, die mir so spontan durch den Kopf schießen: Bei "Zimt" und "viel" müsst ihr den Anfangsbuchstaben mehr betonen. Bei euch klingt es noch wie "Simt" und "wiel". Aber beide Daumen hoch für eure Fortschritte!

Thank you very much for all your effort. Additionally it‘s really an honor to have you in our society. Everyone of you three is such a beautyful and honorable person it‘s really a gift. One point would I like to mention and I hope it‘s not a valid one. You have decided to raise Jack in Germany, built a home and so on. I hope all this has happend based on true and honest impressions and you did not suffer of kind of „confirmation bias“. I wish you will stay lucky here in Germany for your whole life.

Learning German is an absolute uphill battle, I'm with you guys on that as I am well into my own journey with it;
The trick is, never give up and always keep adding on what you already have assimilated, even by a small every day margin 🇩🇪😃

Wow, das war richtig gut! ☺️ Jeder in Deutschland kann euch verstehen, egal wenn die Aussprache und Grammatik noch nicht perfekt sind ;-) etwas, dass mir sehr geholfen hat, als ich damals Englisch gelernt habe, ist, Filme/Serien mit Untertiteln zu schauen. Aber nicht in meiner eigenen Sprache, sondern in der, die auch gesprochen wird! So hat man das Audio und kann gleichzeitig mitlesen und checken, wie die Wörter geschrieben werden und wie die Grammatik sich verhält. Und meistens versteht man anfangs ja beim Lesen mehr als beim Hören. Setzt natürlich ein gewisses Grundverständnis schon voraus, aber ich glaube das habt ihr schon längst! 😊 Liebe Grüße und bleibt gesund :)
Ein Tipp: so oft wie möglich TV, Radio, Filme in der Fremdsprache schauen/hören NEBENBEI! Auch wenn du nichts verstehst du wirst nach einiger Zeit feststellen wie gut deine Aussprache wird. So habe ich Italienisch gelernt. Bekomme positives Feedback von Einheimischen, dass ich keine Typisch deutsche Aussprache habe.
für neun jahre in Deutschland euer Deutsch ist gut, ich versuche immer noch Italienisch zu lernen hier, aber lang nicht so weit wie Ihr... das wichtigste is immer dranbleiben und sprechen, sprechen, sprechen... natürlich auch zuhören :)

Ich kann euch aus Erfahrung sagen das es super wichtig ist die Sprache viel zu sprechen und nach Möglichkeit kein Englisch zu sprechen. Ich war 1990 für ein Jahr als Ausstauschschüler in den USA und musste englisch sprechen.
Das hat sehr geholfen und nach drei Monaten habe ich auf Englisch geträumt und musste mich konzentrieren wenn ich deutsch mit meinen Eltern gesprochen habe.
Euch weiter viel Spaß beim Lernen!

It's funny how your voice sounds when you speak german. Almost exactly like my beloved second-degree aunt/godparent from France. there is this cute sound to the voice that literally makes it possible to hear the person smile :)
I'm french and was married to a British. When I spoke English to him he never recognised my voice.
So interesting - There have been 2 or 3 times where I was speaking German in Freiburg at the Münstermarkt and I have had the vendors ask me where I was from in France. I always just figured it was because I sound different and we are geographically close to France... but maybe there is something about my accent that mirrors the french pronunciation?
@@TypeAshton I think, the guy on the market booth just realized an foreign accent without being able to localize it. Due to the close border to France he obviously assumed french origin, I guess. I feel it is easy to differentiate between an english/american and french accent.

Its was really fun watching you speak broken german and seeing your family. I was pretty lucky born and raised in a bilingual family. My mother coming from the Philippines only spoke the first years english with my father and even today we speak both german and english.
When I took the course placement test to further my German language education at the Goethe Institute, I was found to be at B1 level too. I guess University of Michigan taught me well (I took the language in college to finish my foreign language requirements). As you guys are from Midwest, you must have noticed as I did that although more people still learn Spanish, German is actually very popular to learn in high school (if the language is offered) or college in your necks of the woods. Especially considering that many Midwesterners have German ancestry.

Aber das Gute ist, dass Deutsch sehr viele Redudanzen hat, die absichern, dass man trotzdem gut verstehen kann. Bspw. reicht das Personalpronomen und ein falsch gebeugtes Verb.

I think that it is not so difficult for an English speaker to learn German because the language is very similar in many areas. Obviously it is difficult to master the complete grammar. But that's not so important for understanding either. In my experience, most English speakers have a very good command of the language after a year!

Ich habe so herzlich gelacht. Ihr müht euch so sehr damit deutsch zu sprechen wie ich mit englisch. Gesprochene Sätze verstehen ist die eine Sache, die Worte zu finden die man grade braucht um das auszudrücken was man möchte ist etwas anderes.

Jawohl! Es ist so, als ob wir, wenn wir es von jemand anderem hören, denken: "Oh ja, offensichtlich!" .... aber dann, wenn wir an der Reihe sind, es zu sagen, werden unsere Gedanken einfach leer. 😂

Dankeschön! Das war ziemlich viel Arbeit, aber es hat sich für uns sehr gelohnt.
Hier und da musste ich schusseln, denn in soooo vielen Satzkonstruktionen, schlummern noch viel mehr Ausdrucksmöglichkeiten, aber, ich fand Eure selbst gesetzte Herausforderung (um "challenge" nicht zu nutzen) echt super - weiter so! ... Jack schaute nach dem Wecken so in die Welt, wie auch ich mich morgens fühle - "Morgenstund' hat Gold...", egal, ich schlafe lieber noch ein Stündchen! 😜

@@TypeAshton Ich würde euch empfehlen in den Kommentaren und Videos die "Du" form zu verwenden. Die Höflichkeitsform "Sie" verwendet man auf TH-cam und generell im Internet im deutschsprachigen Raum so gut wie gar nicht. Ich würde mich mehr angesprochen fühlen, wenn ihr die "Du" Form verwenden würdet, weil es fast jeder so macht :) Nur als kleiner Tipp!
Das habt ihr sehr gut gemacht. Im Grunde konnte man alles verstehen, auch wenn ab und an ein paar Buchstaben bei den Wörtern gefehlt oder die Satzstellung nicht komplett richtig war. Weiter so!

What helpdesk me in learning a language was learning common phrases or simple sentences that are often used. They worked as building blocks and my language speed varied a lot more. Whenever one of these blocks was usable my speaking sped up and I had more time to think about the single word that I usually needed to change
Yes! I love that German words really are a lot like legos - if you know the root words you can figure out much more complex phrases or terms by looking at the "building blocks".
@@TypeAshton But you can sure run into problems as a German when you use the same method in other languages. I once knew "to allow" means "erlauben". So I assumed allowance would be the substantive and mean "Erlaubnis". Seems I was the only one thinking that way :-)

Nein - es war keine komplette Katastrophe, es war auch weit entfernt von perfekt… aber es war vergnüglich und surely the most effective approach - it is just the only means to get into learning the language, do and speak it dispite the many many errors you‘ll produce underway, just the heck with it :-) -

Mein Englisch verbessert sich mit jedem englischsprachigen Video, deshalb kann ich nur empfehlen deutsche Filme zu schauen. Am besten mit deutschen Untertiteln, das hilft, wenn jemand zu schnell spricht. Mir hat das jedenfalls sehr geholfen.

Sehr gut gemacht! I am recognising the same kind word order issues that I still struggle with and use of the word ‘so’ which should be ‘also’! my german teacher is slowly trying to correct that one but it is really hard for English speakers to get out of that habit!
You guys should be proud though because you already speak way better german than most English/American People do around here, most don’t even bother with learning german. This will pay dividends when you move to your new house in the countryside, you will get huge amounts of goodwill from the locals, we certainly did when we moved to a small village outside the city. Wow thank you! Honestly, I kind of feel like we have "stalled" a bit in our German learning. Working from home and losing out on daily conversational German really slowed us down. We are looking forward to getting back at it!
@@TypeAshton I'm actually facing a similar problem. I worked my whole professional life in international environments. Hence the communication with colleagues and customers was most of the time in English. Furthermore our formerly German company was owned by US companies for the past 10 years. Consequently the company language was of cause English. Recently I changed my job and joined a company where all communication is in German. Already after a short while I noticed that speaking English gets rusty and more difficult due to a lack of daily practice. Furthermore working from home doesn't help either. However, on the other hand the understanding and the comprehension is improving due to watching a lot of content in English. To master a foreign language it is required that you immerse yourself in it, use and exercise/practice it in your daily live.

@@TypeAshton a friend of mine comes from syria and without any knowledge about the german language. He learned it well within 6 month! by watching german television. In the first weeks i did not anderstand any word but more and more he gets used to it, the pronunciation and so on. 2 years later he nearly speaks like a native german. I think, you guys should watch more tv in german ;)
I know, our language is hard do come bye, but in my opninion its one of the greatest languages in the world... we have so many words for every single situation that may occur... have fun and enjoy the Schwarzwald! Freiburg is an awesom city (was there two times for vacation)

Ich habe jetzt schon mehrere Videos von euch gesehen, wirklich sympatisch. Das schöne daran, ihr versucht Deutsch zu sprechen und ich versuche mit euren Videos mein Englisch etwas aufzubessern. Da ich schon mal in für 3 Monate in El Paso war, musste ich feststellen, dass in Texas doch ein etwas anderer Dialekt gesprochen wird. Ist halt so, das es bei uns Dialekte gibt, aber in den USA genauso. Aber allerhöchsten Respekt euch beiden (ach ne ihr seid ja drei 😊), mal die Herausforderung anzunehmen auch innerhalb der Familie Deutsch zu sprechen.

Tolles Video und großen Respekt das ihr das so gut hinbekommen habt.Ich möchte euch an dieser Stelle einmal etwas trösten...so gut wie kein Deutscher benutzt die Grammatik im Alltag absolut richtig.Es gibt auf der einen Seite das 'Schuldeutsch' und auf der anderen Seite die 'Umgangssprache'.Die beste Art und Weise eine Sprache zu lernen ist,sie im Alltag bei jeder Gelegenheit zu benutzen.Fehler machen ist ausdrücklich erlaubt!...Viel Spaß und weiterhin viel Glück und Gesundheit.

One thing I learned in one of my first English classes is that If i do not know the word. Describe the word with other words that I already know.

My Brother in law is british and my syster live with him since years in the UK. He was spending few weeks with my uncles family to imrove his german. But he made the experience that to many germans switch to easily to english because it is more comfortable.
When I first came to Germany I was taking 4 hours of intensive German in the mornings through a local school and then working at the University with German speaking colleagues. The in-class exercises paired with speaking to my colleagues was SUCH a great learning environment. I can tell that working from home with the pandemic has stunted my learning, so I am really looking forward to getting back into a structured program. ❤️❤️

@@TypeAshton Are you reading any German newspapers? That would help with correct English from a theoretical standpoint and helps with extending vocabulary beyond the everyday knowledge.
Last year Jonathan and I read the first Harry Potter book in German. It took us FOREVER but it was such a good exercise. I know this isn't the same as speaking colloquially, but it was great because we already knew the story from English. We could read the book and relax because we weren't worried that if we didn't understand it 100% that we would miss out on a huge part of the story plot.

You should NOT try to get rid of your acent:
It indicates that you are not grown up with the culture of the land where you now live in. There are may litle cultural rules and signs. You learn them only if you grown up or lived long, long time in that culture. Hearing the acent other people dont expect from you to follow this "litle" rules. They give you more freepasses and are less offended. And that helps both. Thats why it often not to clever to try to get rid of ancent.
