  • We had planned for a caesarean section (Kaiserschnitt), but the NICU stay afterwards was definitely "unexpected". Come along with us on this very personal birth vlog where we share our story of giving birth in Germany as a foreigner. A special 'Dankeschön' to the doctors, nurses, midwives and support staff for their exceptional care. Our son is happy and healthy today because of your efforts and we will always been eternally grateful for the high quality of universal healthcare in Germany.

Oh, am I ever crying for you. I'm crying with relief and joy both. I'm crying not only for all the normal good things (medical technology and supportive community) but, as an American, I'm crying with relief this happened in Germany where the surgery, your hospital stay, and Theo's NICU stay won't bankrupt your family. I'm so glad financial devastation isn't added to your transitioning to a family-of-four challenges. And my heartfelt congratulations to you all. May kindness swaddle your family in your journey together.

And, BTW, in 1790, the first Congress, in which 20 framers sat, required all ship owners to provide medical insurance for seamen; in 1798, Congress also required seamen to buy hospital insurance for themselves. 27 years ago I was in this Uniklinik and got our second daughter in week 29/6. Also a C-section. It took us 7 weeks to get her home, but without the amazing people there, the nurses and the doctors, it might have been that none of us (my daughter and me) would have come home.
She has become an amazing adult, she is and was healthy her whole life since then and we are so grateful of this - then and now and forever. So even when a start is humbly there will be light.

Ah thank you so much. For us, the most difficult part of the NICU experience was the unknown. In the beginning, we were told that he would only need "one or two days"... but then it turned into three, four.... and eventually six in total. In the grand scheme of things it is hardly any time at all, but being separated from him was tough. Theo was definitely the man in control and we just had to go with the flow and pace that he needed. So incredibly thankful for the care that we received and the guidance of the doctors, nurses, midwives and staff.

Before our youngest was born, we knew things would be "complicated." But nothing prepares you for the moment they call you over and tell you they're taking your newborn to the Intensivstation (in our case, before my wife had even held him). It was almost a month, including my first trip riding with blue-lights and sirens when he was transferred to another hospital, before we finally got to bring him home. But the joy when you finally get home is all the better for it. Wishing you all the best.

First of all congratulations. Much love to all of you. Secondly, I fully get that feeling of gratitude. My son developed severe epilepsy at the age of eight. It was sudden and dramatic. For years now he has had a team of people working so hard to care for him. Not just the doctors and nurses who themselves are incredible but family, the staff in his schools, neighbours, friends and even complete strangers who have rushed to help in emergencies. You can say the words 'thank you' as many times as you want but I doubt they really understand just how deeply, deeply grateful you are when people help the child you love. He is doing much better now thanks to some new treatment and again I'm so grateful to the people who worked to develop the latest drugs. I should say we live in the UK so are also deeply grateful for the NHS. We've never had a medical bill.
I wish your family all the happiness in the world and look forward to your future videos.

We are so, so grateful for "our village" of friends. Being so far away from family is always tough in situations like these. We can't just call grandma or grandpa to help babysit when we need to rush to the NICU (and unfortunately, Jack was not allowed to visit in the NICU). We really are so grateful for our friends in the same way you are to yours. It makes a world of a difference.

Gosh, watching this video triggered so many memories. Our kids are now 9 and 10. This taking the punches as they come, feeling helpless and just generally the stress of it all... Seeing the toll of the pregnancy on Ashton's face, seeing Jonathan prepare for attending the surgery, going back and forth between home and hospital. For me these are all distant memories, like the endless number of diapers, the mess of it all, the question how to hold the baby and make sure the head is supported.
I'm so happy for you guys that everything went well. Also happy for you (and a bit envious) for this awesome time when the little ones start exploring the world, the first walk and talk.

Births are really the place where to expect the unexpected. My second was born during the first covid lockdown, so I had to go in alone. It ended up being an emergency c-section where they couldn't get him out for a few minutes which means he got my drugs because I was put under (the epidural didn't quite work), so his first apgar was 4. I lost 2 litres of blood because it took so long to get him out and they had to use the vacuum. So he also spent some time in the NICU and I was pumping in my room. But we were ok in the end and it seems like he didn't suffer any brain damage either. I'm also very grateful for all the care we got.

The adrenaline rush I got was astonishing. I ran around trying to get a signal to phone my husband to get here quick, he left our other son with the baby sitter/cleaner & zoomed the 25km. Congrats from the heart! You are brave parents! It is wonderful that you both survived rhis birth and are being so grateful. Try to write diary if you can, as you still remember details. You are a great mom and Jonatan is a great dad! It will be fine, but just for safety's sake - you might (!) be getting some degree of posttraumatic stressyndrom, and then do ask for help and support, and then have your diary tohelp you remember. Both kids are so extremely cute. A mother and her feelings and her ups and downs are also important. Do cry and laugh, both are so vital. All the best wishes, to the whole family!

@@korneliacevasco9939 I hope everything will be perfectly handled by all the system and friends and relatives - after surprising procedures there can be feelings that are surprising and mixed, too. Not only relief and gratefulness and happiness over the saved, woderful baby. But what do I know. I just wanted to give a hint, that a caesarian is not just an OP, it can be existential. I feel that Germany provides good care, and that knoelwdgw and insight is growing all the time. I'm not directly worried, but the words "crying on camera" made me a little concerned. I'd just want to add, crying, and telling, and remembering, and marvelling are all good thing. I didn't want to come too close. But I felt really close and sisterly. I wollte nicht auffdringlich sein oder zu nahetreten. Alles, alles Gute für die ganze Familie.

Congratulations! I am so glad you were able to bring this new life into the world. We had a similiar experience last year, when our little boy was taken straight from the c-section into the NICU and remained there for 11 days. It's humbling and (for me) kind of scary, but I am so glad we live in this day and age in which doctors and nurses are able to take care of these babies who need a little extra help in the beginning of their life. Greetings from NRW!
