I can’t express enough how awesome your videos are! I’ve been a sports fan ever since I could walk but I have never seen such an insight to not only the training and preparation, but the emotional highs and lows that come with being an athlete. You’re definitely one f my favorite athletes to follow! I hope you know that anytime your racing or making one of these videos you’re inspiring so many people to get better!!
Lionel, have you spoken with or considered speaking with Craig Alexander? I know the race has changed a lot just in the last few years, but you two champions are so similar in your tenacity and commitment and Crowie is a master of planning out the year and training blocks. Idk, I can just see a really good partnership there. All the best man! Enjoy the journey. And realize that we as your supporters don’t expect anything from you in terms of results. We appreciate you and you impact our lives for the better. That’s an awesome thing. Something I try to do with my sons. Don’t carry the weight of disappointing us on your shoulders. It’s not real
You will make it my men!! We all here in our Tri Club in Germany are with you!!! Trust the experiences from the others (trainer and sportscientests) finde a bike sponsors with a wind tunnel test.. You will make it!! Send you passions from Germany!!
Lionel, you have the gift to win at the World Championship in Kona. The middle way is the best approach. The bike fit is huge, if it's done correctly, and having a coach who can see the path forward from an outside point of view. This race has become so competitive now that every detail is important. We wish you luck and hopefully you can find the formula to win this race.
You inspired me to start up my own TH-cam channel for accountability reasons! Over the last month I haven't missed a workout. I'm already beyond the fitness I had when I won my AG at Boulder 70.3! It's been hard working 40hr weeks of management @Target. Everyday I'm walking 10-15 miles a day but watching a new post from you can pump me up for days. Keep it rolling man! I'm a stubborn shit head just like you but the lifestyle of a triathlete is nothing but living life in style. Rock on man!
Speaking as a fan - you did NOT disappoint me. You are modeling thoughtful regard for yourself, the sport, and the people around you. I'm glad you're almost done beating yourself up, because that's unproductive AF. I wish you and your team peace, a productive journey, and that you will both give and get everything you hope to from this magnificent sport. Keep truckin', Lionel.
Agree. I saw the numbers and thought, oh hell Lionels having a bad day. Just a shame he wasn't in the coverage as a result! Having said that for an 8:30 to be a disaster 😂
I love your honesty and generosity. Your thoughts about the middle way resonate a lot with me. The wholehearted personality is also my strength and weakness.... Gonna subscribe to see if you find a way to embrace more duality.... keep us posted!
You are a superhuman and an inspiration my friend, not because of your athletic performance but because of your honesty and to know your mistakes, and your limitations and you know where and how you need to improve, instead of blaming anyone else. Keep honest with yourself like this, that's how you going to be a champion next year.. and keep sharing.. thank you 👏
Lionel is amazing , reached this level of fitness in self taught way .I cant wait to see what he is capable of when gets the right coaching/professional support
Again, love your transparency and honesty. Even in the midst of failure. Heard someone say to someone who questioned coaching, “Did you pay for the coaching? Do you trust the person giving the coaching? Then take the coaching.” We have to realize that good coaches see things with a clarity that we don’t. That’s why we hire them. It’s futile to pay them and then disregard what they say. If you feel a need to disregard what they ask of you then either you have a ego problem or you made a bad purchase and have no faith. Are you Anakin Skywalker? 😄
You look so much like us .... that I identify myself with you. What surprises me is that you still need a bikefit .... I think you take the right decision but you will have a lot more pressure next year in KOna with all that you ared oing to improve. Work on that part. Well, we all want you to win Kona but all your competitors work a lot too .... it s not gonna be easy but you can do it !! Courage and thanks fot the videos, we learn o a lot from them. Cheers
Man, you're (brutally honest) struggles are even more inspiring than your massive performances. Sounds like you've turned a big corner and you can see 2019 stretched ahead of you. Go for it fella.
Hi brother come to Maui!!!! Great place to train triathlon!!!my home is your home!!!! I live near by pool, near by the mountains, great trails and flats for running!
Ok so this year was not his best in terms of results, but so far in his short pro triathlon career, Lionel Sanders has managed to finish 2nd at Kona, win the ITU long course world championships, win back to back Challenge Samorin Championships, win many 70.3 races, win 3 full IM distance races including breaking the IM branded world record (since broken again by Tim Don), and finish on the podium in many other races. Many coached athletes would love such a resume! Lionel loves to experiment and push the limits in order to learn what works and what doesn't. I'm confident he'll figure everything out and that his best performances are still ahead of him. in the meantime we get to follow along and share in his fascinating journey through his videos and blogs. Thanks Talbot Cox as always for producing these vids!
Lionel goddamned, you have the best “hardware” in the field, the best motivation and are admirable for your openness on emotions. You have what it takes and got second last year in Kona. Get yourself 1 established trainer that have a proven record of making champions. Patrick Lange has Faris El Sultan and not a bunch of trainers that will only confuse you and themselves. Get your mindset on trusting that 1 trainer and you will see that next year you will be competing for the win! Go for it champ 😎💪🏼
Roy Hinnen elite tri coach did a youtube video analysing and advising what might help you. I think it was a genuine and well meant attempt to advise. Worth watching for all Lionel fans. Lionel your a rare breed in top flight sport, more human than automaton.
Me and I think all your followers want to see you win. And accepting that you dont have all the answers and that it would take you years to figure this stuff out is a step in that direction. Thank you for the videos!
One of the things I love about Lionel - always staying humble in win and in defeat. I think you should get Craig Alexander as advisor on your team. It will certainly pay some dividends
Someone I think that would be a very good asset to your team of advisers is Rich Roll. There's a guy who if you've read his books, went from barely making it up a flight of stairs one night to becoming an Ultra Ironman. He's a nutrition plant based guru for sure, but also a world class athlete which can advise on training. Good luck in assembling your team and look forward to seeing your forward progress.
I think a coach is the answer. An advisor who is a friend will be a yes man. Having many on the payroll is probably a mistake. Just my two cents. You have so much talent and drive. I just dont understand why you dont want one. Jan has one, as do all the other world class triathletes! It worries me for you as there are only so many prime years in an elite athletes life.
Fuck, Lionel, you didn't let anybody down. For sure, you didn't let me down. Keep grinding, draw some lessons from the experience and keep growing as a person, an athlete and get ready to grab your dream to win in Kona. We all holding your back.
Great one you are realizing your mistakes pretty quickly and searching for a solution. I just spot that your golf position looks much like your late position while running. You need more drills to open the arms. Keep pushing smartly!
Lionel - Kyla Channell is an outstanding dietician who specializes in endurance nutrition. She's kind, gentle, and strikes me as extremely collaborative. She is Matt Dixon's nutritionist and trained at UC Davis.
I don't believe your performance at Kona was due to poor training. I do believe it was due to overall planning, such as periodization, tapering and nutrition.
I was also fit by Ivan in Boulder. The Retul system is nice. And I've had GR on the deck and spoke with him about his system. These are proven guys. Hopefully your on the right track bro. Good luck! Watch out for quack nutritionists. I don't trust those guys.
You're doing great. I would suggest a sports psychologist to overcome any mental barriers and identify performance blocks. No athletic coach needed but a team of experts is definitely a good move.
Love your commitment to change! What about getting a biomechanical analysis of your running and specifically your one hip/leg that you seem to drag a bit. That might be a weak point in your run especially in the 2nd half of a marathon when we all begin to break down. At that point we're only as strong as our weakest link right? You might already have the answer to what is going on but i'd just thought i'd throw it out there. Thanks for opening up to us and as a fellow Canuck we're behind you 100%
Good shout Lionel, your swim did go to shit this year after the out of ur comfort zone sessions. Just a case of stiching together all ur best bits from the last couple seasons (just) 👍👊😎
I admire you so so much and truly appreciate all that you’ve shared with us. I also have a very extremist personality and can totally relate there. Moving to somewhere like sunny California sounds like a fantastic idea! Are you racing oceanside 70.3 again?
As the saying you've heard so many times......Trust in the process ❗️Don't judge your results on your next few races. You are making changes, so look at the long game. 6-12 months before being too harsh on yourself. Let the process take its and weave it's magic. You'll be awesome ❗️
Will be really interested to know if you discover and “secrets” to the balance between indoor and outdoor training. Each has its place and I know you’ve been a huge supporter/proponent of indoor training, but I find it interesting that you are now looking to Boulder and San Diego, which I believe means you are planning to find a balance between indoor and outdoor sessions. I’ve also asked #triathlontaren to maybe do a video on this subject as I think many others would find this helpful, especially since “winter is coming” as #johnsnow says....
What a shame- I would have loved to see the effect training with Brett Sutton for 2 years would have had on your success. Was hoping to see you move to St Moritz! Cant see being coached by committee is going to be better. I think Sutton would have sliced through all the crap.
What about the suggestion of getting monthly blood work to test all the important stressors to make sure you’re not over trained / over reaching on a constant basis?
I really love the way you are analyzing yourself! And I believe most of what you said is spot on (may be it looks a bit arrogant when I "judge" your words that way... but as I'm exactly twice as old as you and having a very similar mindset and gone through much of what you are experiencing I dare to do so...). Working with a coach - look at Daniela Ryf! To be her coach is ...hard - very hard! Because she is as much of a bullhead as you are, and her coach Brett is grumbling about her all the time. But in the end success is unbelievable. And so I think... you also need a coach who was successful already, who's knowledge is undisputed, and who has nothing to prove; so you know what this guy says is correct - without a doubt, but if you don't everything like he wants, it doesn't damage the relationship and the work with him. I really hope to see you as the best version of yourself (as an athlete...) next year in Kona! So excited to watch that race... and - to be honest - though I hope Frodo will win next year, I hope he will beat you at a level where no other human being than him is able to do so... Continue you way, awesome to witness it...

Yes, yes, yes. Crowie is the Pros Pro. Crowie will be the best guy for Lionel.
I agree Lionel reminds me of Craig!!!!

Love your honest videos Lionel. All the best for the future 😁👍
Surprised you feel the need for a panel of experts. You already have one in the comment sections!
Love the sarcasm ahah
Hahaha spot on....
So true 🤣
So happy to hear you have sorted things out.

Sounds like a good plan. There are people out there who possess very valuable knowledge.
Hi Lionel,
you are still a big inspiration, don't stop and keep going.
love to see that you are still humbled
That’s it! Great! Looking forward to see how you’ll race after this process!

Oh I'm sooooo looking forward to this very positive and no doubt SUCCESSFUL journey. Definitely made the right decision, 100%!!!!!!
He’s just a lone wolf...can’t change that. At the end of the day he’s gonna win or implode all on his own terms. Pulling for you Lionel!

"I know close to nothing" ------ Thank you Lionel! I personally need this in my mindset. Get it!!!!!
Goo lad Lionel. Keep going, you'll be a winner at Kona in two year, no doubt.
