  • Join us for our December book club episode as we discuss "A Case For The Book of Mormon" with author Tad R. Callister.
"The greatest doctrinal truths, to me, is the atonement of Jesus Christ. It's in the Book of Mormon we get the phrase "the Infinite Atonement" and we learn all the ways the atonement is infinite, including being retroactive in time. We can be cleansed before the purchase price ever took place. In the Bible we know that Christ redeemed us from sin and death, but the Book of Mormon teaches us that it also had enabling powers and that He could comfort and strengthen us in our weaknesses and perfect our imperfections. It was not just designed to cleanse us but to perfect us."

One of the things I have been pondering on is this: when those who are seeking for answers among critics - are you feeling peace in those answers or in those criticisms? Or are you getting more frustrated, more angry, more upset and more caught up in wanting to tear down the faith of those that do believe? Galatians 5:22-23 says the fruit of the spirit is “love, joy, peace…” and if you are not feeling those things then you are not receiving a witness of truth because the spirit is whet testifies and witnesses to our souls of truth and does so in good and loving and peaceful ways. Thank you Ashley for this podcast!! It truly helps me to feel that love, joy, and peace of the Spirit!!

Ashley, I have watched several of your podcasts, what a dynamic giving person, you are. I have really enjoyed your podcasts but watching this particular one with Brother Callister was so good and so enlightening. I am in my 70's, I have struggled, returned and struggled several times over my lifetime in the church. (I am a convert.) I have had to stay home for many years unable to go to church or temple due to health things but I watch a lot of church things on You Tube and LDS TV programs but today, rather this evening, I was so greatly touched and reminded of many issues and helps. I cannot thank you enough and btw, I really do like Brother Callister, he has definitely been inspired to write the books that he has. When the program was over I went to the bookcase and found both books, "Case for the Book of Mormon and "Infinite Atonement". It has been awhile since I read them but I wasn't really 'into them' when I did and this podcast was an answer to a prayer. I can read them again and listen to them on Deseret Bookshelf since I have more time and a better desire to read, again.
I am so proud of you and your time and effort that you put into this blessing for so many people. You have given me a gentle push without even realizing it. I do have a testimony but sometimes we get lax and not take it as such a serious blessing as the gospel is and the honor and privilege to have what we have. The Spirit is awesome, the truth just comes through during each podcast. God bless you and thank you for your sacrifice. And last and by no means least, I am thankful to the Gospel of Jesus Christ and for the teaching of such. My life would be a wreck if it weren't for the teachings. Blessings.

I am so impressed with your courage and testimonies. I'm sure the fiery darts coming at you will be plentiful, but I pray you will be strengthened and supported in this great effort you've begun. I love that you are trying to stay away from the fray of argument, contention, and sensationalism. You seem to be focusing on bearing testimony of Christ and His gospel. Stay strong, my young sisters! I'm looking forward to future episodes.

I've thrown some of those fiery darts myself & my main reason was I'd been told cold hard facts about Joseph Smith by people outside the Church. It's not argument, contention or sensationalism. I'd been lied to, you've been lied to. It's just that simple.

My testimony is a pearl of great price and the world would like to destroy it just as any truth. Thanks to Tad Callister for his sword of truth to help us cut through deceit and build on TRUTH. Thanks to this podcast; we gain strength to hold on to Truth....THANK YOU! And....Thank you Brother Callister for leading us to Jesus Christ.
The spirit is the greatest evidence that the Book of Mormon is True, studying the Book of Mormon has only brought happiness into my life. Best of all, the Book of Mormon has brought me to a clear knowledge that Jesus is the Christ and the savior of this world

My strongest testimony of the Book of Mormon was not in reading it with the idea of asking the question is it true or not, but reading it from the perspective that the person/s who wrote it believed it to be true. When I did that it was as if I was sitting with that person reading their story, and it was so very powerful.

I agree completely with his parting comments that if you leave the church, there is nowhere to go. I attended other churches and studied other doctrines before getting baptized. I learned that other churches simply don’t have the answers. They are vague on so many things. The comprehensiveness of the gospel struck me so profoundly. Thank you for the work you are doing. I’m sorry that it puts you in the path of the anti-LDS contingent. I’m so thankful to have found this channel. Keep up the good work!

Big fan of the podcast here! I particularly enjoyed this episode. I completely agree with Brother Callister here in that patience is key. HOW many times has the scriptures recorded that Jesus was “coming” and it was prophesied YEARS before he was born? And there wasn’t an internet or anything! That’s a lot of faith to have. I have such a testimony of patience in receiving the truth. I have also learned that there isn’t really a timeline for “knowing everything” either. We don’t stop learning and a testimony will never complete in life. We will be presented with new ideas and situations to make or break our testimony. If you find it hard, I encourage you to keep going! ❤ Think of it as an opportunity to become the best version of you!

Don Bradley said the most enlightening thing to me about putting our faith in the right place vs wrong place.
And he said of all the things Joseph Smith was called to be: prophet, seer, revelator, translator.. etc, he was not called to be exemplar. Because we already have a perfect example and that is our Savior, Jesus Christ.
So if your faith is being shaken because of what past or present prophets had said or did then maybe it’s because your putting your faith in the wrong place because ppl will let you down, but Christ won’t. And that is where we should always be putting our faith.

Tad R. Callister is one of my favorite speakers in conference! His talks on the Book of Mormon are riveting. Thankyou for having him and I love this discussion on my favorite book! The Book of Mormon IS the cornerstone of my faith in the Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints. There is no way that anyone could write this book with all it's layers and layers of various groups of people, ups and downs of societal ebb and flow and human nature throughout the book. The disbelieving Nephites as antagonists who can't just live in their own disbelief but need to be destructive and run to stir up the Lamanites to bring about wars. The human nature elements that are in our current times.
This was so good!! THANKYOU ✨ so much!

First Ashley thanks for your story. I watched it on Saints Unscripted and took your challenge to re-read the Book of Mormon again each day to continue to overcome my own addictions.
Just some background. I have always know there is a Living God, but my seed of doubt was whether he loved me individually due to extensive abuse in my life as I grew up. I tested if that was the case during a period where I was sent home but not released from my mission, and received the answer I asked for in the form I asked for it. The real answer came years later as I read the story of Alma the youngers conversion which gave me hope in a time of absolute darkness in my life.
I started reading the Book of Mormon when I was in gradeschool and even wrote book reports on it. By the time I was in High School I had read it 10 or more times. In the year that we had the Book of Mormon in seminary I was enrolled for early morning class and resolved to read it each morning before class began and finally was able to situate where the stories I was so familiar with were located in the text. I have always felt that it was real, but about the same time I put that to the test by using what resources I had to investigate (encyclopedias and the like). First I looked to discover if there was a civilization in the America's that might have the population and sophistication to have the massive wars describe, and found many. Then I examined to see if one of those groups were active during the period of the main Book of Mormon narative of 600 bc to 400 ad (I wasn't sure of the Jaredite period at the time), and I discovered the Maya fit that period nicely, but they had human sacrifice which I knew the Nephites didn't, but that was resolve because the Lamanites did so the Maya might have been a combination of both. I was trhilled to learn years later that other more knowlegeable scholars also felt that was the likely location of the text as well. That put to rest virtually all my doubts for years and as time went on I have learned of other real world evidence to further support my belief in the Book of Mormon.
My next transformation came a few years ago from being most interested in the cool stories to appreciating the robust doctrine it contains as a result of being involved with another group who because of their perspective opened my eyes to doctrine I had been taught all my life but never really understood, the concept of Grace.
I can testify along with you that the Book of Mormon saved my life and continues to tranform my life for the better even when things look their darkest, and that is worth everything to me, since it confirmed that the Living God and Christ are personally interested in me and care about me more than I can currently comprehend. That is what I get from the Book of Mormon.

    • @UtahKent
      @UtahKent ปีที่แล้ว +1

Amen. Let me assure you, God knows you individually and loves you unconditionally. I have also been through many challenges in life and though they are hard, they turned out to be worth enduring them. My trials have fortified my testimony beyond my own capacities. In all things remember 4 words from D&C 122 to Joseph Smith "... hold on thy way..."
And check out the two books written by Dr.John Lund on the Mesoamerican setting for the Book of Mormon. Fantastic.

What's helped me honestly is accepting that the church's history is, in fact, not squeaky clean. The church has been working to be more transparent in recent years which is awesome, and I welcome it! But for so many years church leaders encouraged a perfectly tidy vision of church history, and it was simply not a complete picture. Prophets were never perfect people, many church leaders have said and done questionable things, members have wrongly acted in the name of the church, and so on. However, the church is in a constant process of receiving revelation to improve upon it's past and to advance forward. I've found comfort in the fact that Christ himself is perfect, and that he chooses to work through imperfect people to build his kingdom. This means that sometimes mistakes are made, people are hurt, and reputations are marred. But this doesn't mean that Christ's gospel is untrue, or that the church he's established on earth is unworthy of our membership. It just means that we still have work to do to learn from the mistakes of our past and the past of the church.
My Dad would take me and my brothers and sisters to Church history sites while we were growing up. Plural marriage... Always knew about that. Bank failure in Kirtland... Always knew about that. Problems Saints had with the pro-slavery Missouri militia... Always knew about that. Smith destroying the Expositor, then getting protected and exonerated by the Nauvoo courts, then killed for it... Always knew about that. Young was a controversial leader who harbored racist ideologies while also leading The Saints... Always knew about that.
History was part of my life. And I knew about those things when I had a miraculous experience as a teen, and felt the Spirit of God, and knew The Church was true.
I still had a hard time as a missionary when I encountered anti-Mormon materials. Some of it is asked in a way that makes the antagonism not necessarily a question that is easy to answer. And sometimes anti-Mormons did not allow an answer, or tried to frame what they expected the answer to be.
Sometimes the *honest* answer is, "I have faith." Sometimes that is the honest answer.
I think sometimes Saints think that there is an easy answer for everything, and there isn't and antagonists play that to their advantage.
I guess it was and is easier to me because I was exposed to antagonistic material and the more difficult aspects of Church history prior to my conversion. It would probably be harder for someone who was converted, then experienced anti-Mormon material.
The scriptures are clear that spiritual things can only truly be understood through a spiritual lens. Take the spiritual lens out of the equation (which is what antagonists do) and it is harder to explain or justify the controversial aspects of Church history.
Smiths plural marriages... Taken in the context against Biblical plural marriages is understandable (to me). It was practiced in the Bible. It was practiced by Smith and Young and the early Latter-Day Church.
Bank failure in Kirtland.... Smith was trying to help people, and there was a broad global recession at the same time. Lots of banks failed. Smith and many others lost everything with everyone else. Tragic. Sad. But The Church now has safeguards (lol) against recession and financial loss, and the current Church assets have to be understood against Church history of The Church being destitute in Kirtland, assets taken in Missouri, and assets left in Illinois.
Smith translating The Book of Mormon and Book of Abraham... Smith had power and spiritual insights and gifts you and I and Egyptologists or antagonists to The Church do not have access to-- or really an understanding of (without a spiritual lens). If you want to know The Book of Mormon is true then you have to pray to God. That is where the spiritual answer to the Book of Mormon is found. That is not an answer that satisfies many antagonists to The Church.
Despite my sincere efforts to understand Jesus Christ, I find myself facing questions from others who interpret the Bible differently. As for how it all ends, I believe it remains a mystery until God chooses to reveal it. Until then, the quest for understanding continues.
If God will punish me of believing on something is not true or believe someone saying something that you belong in a wrong faith. So be it!

I just finished a challenge I heard in the latest Gen Conf from bro rasbands talk (this day) I got a missionary copy of the book of mormon and marked and highlighted every scripture that points to Jesus christ and every scripture that taught the doctrine of christ. It was an incredible experience. It has changed the way I feel about the book of mormon. It has strengthened my testimony of the prophet Joseph Smith. This process makes it so crystal clear that the Book of Mormon teaches the truth of the gospel. Thanks agsin for this podcast. Keep them coming.

24:37 Good news! Joseph's only wife was Emma! Eventually the Church will come around to the true state of the evidence that Joseph was neither a liar nor an adulterer, and that others, though almost certainly well-meaning, were sufficiently deceived that they falsely attributed that damnable doctrine to Joseph.

For those who say that the Book of Mormon is not true, then i have a few questions.
Do you truly believe that Jesus Christ is God?
If Jesus speaks, do you listen and believe?
In John 10:16, the Savior says:
And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.
I dont care if you believe in the Book of Mormon or not, because it is between you and God and not anyone else what you believe. But if you truly say that you believe Jesus is God and that he spoke those words, then how can you not believe that he did what he said in appearing to others not of his current fold and that he would bring them into his fold?
There are records from multiple cultures around the world that state they were visited by God. All stories are different, but does that make them all untrue?
There are recorded histories from Russia, China, Japan, India, and many other countries/cultures that profess their ancestors had visits from a God. Many of their stories have similar teachings as what was taught by Jesus Christ in Jerusalem. Are their stories untrue?
Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints believe that the Book of Mormon came from people who lived in the Americas somewhere. Have you done any research to find any truths to that claim?
The Sioux (Dakota), Potawatomi (Bodéwadmi), Stockbridge (Mahican), and other Indian peoples residing in Wisconsin and Canada. Delegations from the Sauk (Asakiwaki) and Fox (Meskwaki) tribes among many other tribes in North America state in their oral and written histories that their ancestors had visits from the great Spirit. There are also artifacts being found that prove their ancestors were already religious before any Christian missionaries came to them.
In Central and South America, only 1% of the ancient ruins have been discovered, uncovered, or researched. Multiple of the native people who live in Central or in South America have also stated that their ancestors had visits from a Great Spirit or a God. There are also ancient artifacts that depict the visitations as well as a religious culture having been present.
At least 75% of the anachronisms written in the Book of Mormon have now been found either in South, Central, or in North America.
So in the end, if you can only believe that only the Isrealites had God and wrote scripture, then you are blind to the histories of people across the world.
John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
How can God be a merciful God and only tell one people his word and leave the rest to never know him past or present?
He didnt leave them to their own devices, because he loves everyone. Jesus knew that his Apostles didnt know there were people in other lands where they couldn't travel to preach. So he said he would go himself.
Believe in the Book of Mormon or not, but its a fact that something happened around the world whether you believe it or not.
Someday all will be judged. Do you want to be open to possibilities or closed to his word because its not in the Bible? You decide!

28:15 this one will take trial and error. There's no one sentence answer. Best way I've seen is study how Jesus did it in the four gospels. Study how nephi, Jacob, and Alma handle it.
Best of all learn to ask the right questions. Three great ones are "what do you mean by that?" "How did you arrive at that conclusion?" And "would you consider [insert your calm response]?"

    2 Nephi 2:
Lehi teaches that the Atonement of Jesus Christ goes much deeper than we usually consider or maybe even understand--it truly is Infinite...
    happiness
    ^
    creation* agency sense&sensibility
    ^
    justice mercy
    ^
    opposition
    ^
Atonement of Jesus Christ... paid for and brought all things into existence... without Him was not anything made that was made
*beyond a compound in one, a thing of naught, a vanishing away
Without the Atonement of Jesus Christ paying the price of opposition and paying the price of the learning curve of progress and perfection... justice (though it could not exist outside the Atonement of Jesus Christ) would instantly damn and destroy existence--no progress could be made.
Thus, mercy is the fruit of the Atonement of Jesus Christ... allowing for creation and existence (beyond a compound in one),... and allowing progress, and perfection to exist.
Mercy is therefore the mother of creation, agency, and sense and sensibility... and happiness.
All truth is circumscribed into one great whole... and all things/truth--knowledge of things as they were, are, and will be--are/is before God as one eternal now.
    Just some thoughts:
In this sense, it is interesting to consider that all things must already exist as one eternal "now" and that time is a function and perspective of the Atonement of Jesus Christ, and all that we see and learn in "time" is a part of knowing all things--perhaps being stretched out so we can see its details and knowing good and evil--over "time"--line upon line--perhaps like lines of the Eternal code of existence being unveiled one line at a time... over "time"?????

It does not follow that if the Book of Mormon is true that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is true. Though it would give credence to Joseph's claims to a prophetic call, it does nothing to support the claims of his successors. Instead, Brigham Young's claim must be weighed against Joseph Smith III's, Sidney Rigdon's, James Strang's, etc., as well as the possibility that there was no true successor. And, even if Brigham Young's claim were to hold up, there are several other schism events that warrant additional investigation. Tad, like so many others, is oversimplifying the issue in a way that favors his preferred claim.
There are problems with every apologetic about archeology he brings up, but this "and it came pass" one is particularly silly. In the LDS scriptures, the BoM is 531 pages, the OT is 1184. The phrase, by Tad's count, appears in the BoM over 1400 times. It appears, by his count, 1200 times in the OT. Not sure how that helps the apologetic argument. The critical argument would note that Joseph is cramming an OT phrase in the BoM exactly as we would expect if he was making it up and using the OT as a reference point for style.
The BoM does do a great job of addressing the doctrinal questions of the late 1820s. I'll agree with Tad there.
Critics change their arguments based off new information is not the flex that Tad makes it out to be.
Disingenuous to say that Helen Mar Kimball was "relatively young". She was 14.
If you want to engage with critics without being combative, one method could be to use Socratic methods. Show that you are willing to consider their position and ask questions that interrogate their position but that show a willingness to learn. We can all be better about approaching these conversations in good faith and with a willingness to learn or change our minds.
If the god described by the BoM exists, it would appear that it would want everyone to know that the BoM is true, that it would know what each person needs to know that it is true, and that it would have the power to provide that convincing evidence without infringing on agency. The known existence of earnest seekers of truth who do not believe BoM truth claims or who have honestly drawn the conclusion that the BoM is not true is a problem for the faithful position. It is tied in with the problem of divine hiddenness.
Just a note that Tad's description of the BoM links its historicity with its truth value. I agree with him on that point. It is a problem when we observe things like Deutero-Isaiah, molten iron ore, and the Long Ending of Mark in the BoM, as well as the absence of things like tomatoes, maize, sugar cane, and New World fauna in the text.

I’ve read Tad’s book multiple times and believed his arguments. For a long long time.
Problem is, I scratched beneath the surface and found his arguments to be problematic at best and misleading at worst.
6:44 Specifically about the plates. The plates issue is very much brought up now, despite Tad’s claim. Problem is what looked like a solution for the BoM for one problem has just created a larger problem.
One of math, size, and weight.
All the metal plates that have been found point to a very huge problem for Joseph’s story. Plates would have to be huuuuge to hold even a fraction of the words claimed in the BoM. I mean enormous.
Tad claims it as a win, but it’s just as big if not a bigger problem.
Unless you think Joseph didn’t use the plates at all, and that will lead to other problems.
This is the tip of the iceberg with BoM problems. I wish Tad had been right, but I no longer trust him as a source of truth telling, nor the BoM.
    It seriously breaks my heart.

    • @diverseratman
      @diverseratman ปีที่แล้ว +3

Because it wouldn't do any good. No one is going to be converted from a debate, and it is contrary to the gospel of Jesus christ. Why? Because it drives the spirit away. We don't argue or debate, we teach and we testify. Then, it is up to the individual to take action to find out if the message is true.

If the Book of Mormon is true.
Then answer my two questions that the Mormon church has refuse/avoided to answer:
    1. The Book of Mormon is written in so called "reformed Egyptian" language.
Where is the linguistic evidence for this language?
To this day, the Mormon church hasn't provided any shred of linguistic evidence for "reformed Egyptian" language.
    2. Why isn't there any archeological evidence to support any stories that is in the Book of Mormon?
Again, to this day the Mormon church hasn't provided any kind of archeological evidence.

Yes, God has provided plenty of evidence and answers for His Bible us to find.
But NOTHING for the Book of Mormon.
Let's hear what God Himself says about evidence in ROMANS 1:20 "For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse..."
You'll find evidence for the Bible whether it be Biblical or Non-Biblical. Archeological, linguistic, historical, scientific, genetic, anthropology.
But nothing on any scale for the Book of Mormon.
God has provided evidence for us to find.
