      I did choose one area and did it! But I have so many more little areas to work on and am so blessed by the gardening vlogs out there, like yours, that keep me motivated. You are Zone 9 and I'm in So. California, Zone 10. Would be great if there could be a You Tube gardener show from Zone 10 so it would be more applicable. Appreciate that you and Laura educate us so well and even bring us into your home as well as your garden. I am so enjoying the process you are going through of packing up and moving; unpacking and setting up house; your new office in order; your seeds planted; and now you have your climbing jasmine for the front of the house's trellis. Although, they do look wonderful where you temporarily placed them - in front of the zig zag planter - so much so that I agree with Michael - buy some more and plant them in the zig zag for privacy! Would look so beautiful there. BTW, I agree with Michael, keep the zig zag planter. It's quirky but with the new paint job and new plants it's now working! You have a knack for making it all work. Look forward every morning to watching two of You Tube's gardening shows and your's is one of those two.

    Lots of exciting ideas, however I would like to suggest that instead of a pipe underground directing any runoff to the street, that you find a way to keep that water on site (rain garden?). Water is such an elusive commodity in CA, and we all need to hold on to as much of it as we can. Question about the deck to your office: if you do a "bridge", rather than a path, won't that make it impossible to, say, move a wheelbarrow through there? The shipping container pool sounds great, and I am sure the girls will be thrilled to have it sooner than later.

    Love all the plans especially a shipping container as a pool but how will y’all get a shipping container back there with all the structures and garden planters in the way? Have to be honest, the idea of a bridge sounds nice but think it will hinder access…maybe a bridge somewhere else on the property. 🤔 💚💚💚

    I always heard not to plant high shrubs infront of windows because it gives people a place to hide. Just sometimes to think about. I, too, love the painted zig zag planter and the idea of a courtyard. It's going to be so much fun executing Michael's plan, seeing it come together. Especially your talent for plant combinations, its going to be beautiful.

    For your front door area, not sure what it looks like inside but if it’s like most California homes there is no actual entry (bench, coat rack, shoes etc). I would be tempted to use the outside small rectangular area and turn it into an entry area - you could either extend your house (expensive) or enclose the area with an interior and exterior door, not official part of your house but give you a real entry.

  • @mavisstaton1530

    Love Michael Glassman! I’m a landscape designer in Dallas,TX and learn so much from him and of course, you! I look forward to your show every morning.
    Just one thing to consider before putting in the raised bridge to your office (from your back door), your ability to pull carts and such from your driveway to your raised beds will be cut off. Accessibility will be challenging.

    I love what you are doing and have a question. I'm a practical gardener (sort of, lol). My question is, if you put in a bridge to your office, and say you get another soil drop or wood chips, or a big tree, which may happen over the years, how do you get it to where you want it to go in the back there easily? I use my Gorilla cart almost every day hauling compost or dirt - how will you get it there easily if there is a bridge in the way - or will this not be a raised bridge? One thing I've learned as I've gotten older, I need access to areas - so I can work in them. I have to say, I love, love, LOVE, the fence around the metal beds area. That is gorgeous!

  • @Linda-gi8pr

    Ok. Another thought....your gazebo should have a modern look, or somewhat modern. Your home has a retro, modern, streamline look...so the gazebo needs to look similar. Not a Victorian look.

    I think the bridge to the office is a cool concept but I think you would be over it within a few months. Whenever you need to go through with stuff from the metal shop you will have to go around the office to get through. With everything you plan on doing with the property it will end up being a journey from point A to B.

  • @Bcaf0731
    @Bcaf0731 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    I do love these ideas, but personally I’d struggle to block 100% of your cute homes curb appeal. You just went to the trouble to remove the roses blocking the view to the home only to block it again with a zigzag planter and screening. . I like the idea of the court yard, but maybe not the entire front of the house. . Just a though. .

    • @gailcarter7855

    Putting a bridge to your office will block off access from the driveway to the back garden. (Like the compost you got for the beds) I would rethink the deck in the front. Take it all out and put beautiful pavers instead. I didn’t really see his vision for the living wall in the zig zag planter. Rebuilding the front pergola sturdier with thicker wood would make it look more upscale. Putting in a canopy is going to be more upkeep and seems not a fit with the style of the house. A dry creek in the front yard? I guess once I see what he’s designing it will be amazing but right now hearing about it, I don’t like it. Lol!

    I am not sold on the gazebo, at least not that close to your house. If you are going to have paths, have one of the paths lead to the gazebo, a destination point if you will, at other end of property. You can sit on your front flagstone patio, look out over garden, take a stroll and end up at gazebo where you can view your beautiful garden from another angle.

    Not done watching, had to take a pause.....but rhoughts so far....thank you for keeping the zig zag. From day one I thought it was fun, quirky and unique to your home, embrace it !❤ two, I think if you put star jasmine or whatever and male a living fence in the zig zag it will look like your hiding your home and also you won't get a full view of the beautiful landscape out front.....now I will go back to the video.

    • @galakrupa469
      @galakrupa469 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That's what I was thinking about the living fence in the zigzag. It will look like your hiding your home and you wouldn't be able to get a full view of the beautiful landscape out front through a little hole basically. You already have a fence up in front for privacy and are talking about replacing it eventually which I totally agree with. Don't you want to see your beautiful landscape and house together when you pull up onto your driveway. This is just my thoughts and whatever you decide will be fine because it is your house and property.

    I feel like the easier solution in the front would be to get rid of the deck and just have a step down from the kitchen. Then you also get some additional privacy/separation from the driveway as the seating area would be lower compared to the zig zag planter. Plus then you wouldn’t lose the door to the ADU.

      Yes! Get rid of the deck.

      Totally thinking the same thing. You would have more head space as you walk out of the front door. If you want a chandelier or fan, you will need more room.

      If it was me, I would not even paint the front deck, I would be outside with a sawzall cutting it up.

    If there is concrete under the deck, why not just take out the deck? It would look so good. I agree about not blocking the front of the house. It’s so pretty.

    Love the brainstorming (again) but want to say NO to the bridge to your office. That would create such an obstacle in that area. Might you want to keep that area flat so you can drive through it? Or cart through it with your garden tools? Just my opinion, but my first reaction to that was WHAT? NO! A stone path or something would be beautiful and I wouldn't even plant around it....maybe just at each end of it.

    This plan will have so many great ideas! I do wonder about the practical logistics of the raised bridge to the office door. Wouldn't that cut off flow from the driveway, shop building, etc.? I can imagine many times that you and your family, along with occasional guests and tradespeople, might need access through that area between the back of the house and the office to haul things into the back garden or the house or to go back and forth from the house to the shop or from the office to the garden, etc. Maybe a ground-level covered walkway would be more practical while still allowing for a covering of lovely vines. That way, you wouldn't need to step down into the office. However, maybe I am misunderstanding what he means. I look forward to seeing the plans in a few weeks.

    Hi, Janey: I had that idea in a previous video -- the obelisk over the concrete piece in the front!! Say, does Michael need any help at his design firm? (🤣🤣). That would be my dream job!! One idea that I would give some thought to Janey, is the bridge to your office. I really think it could be problematic with cutting off that area from the traffic in your yard, especially wheelbarrows. You will be constantly leaping over that bridge. Although it's a cute idea, would something else work just as well? I think the arbor over the area, with plantings on the arbor, would look wonderful if it keeps the area clear for ease of traffic. Just my two cents. There are lots of decisions to be made. From my experience, always think long term when making your landscape decisions, especially with the big items. Whatever you decide, I'm sure it will be amazing! Looking forward to the journey! ❣❣

    Questions: where do you park your cars? Which door do you go out of to get to your cars? Which door do you bring your groceries in? Do you most often walk in front of your office to access your raised bed area? While the bridge to your office sounds cool, would it be practical?

    🌼🌼 JANIE 🌼🌼 my husband has a question. He is wondering if you looked UNDER the front deck to see if there is concrete all the way to the zig zag planter? He is thinking there is, but questions how far. Possibly you could just take the deck out completely - to help with the ups and downs, until you are ready for your final plan to be put in p,ace, or you just end up liking it. There might even be a stair that goes to the slider under there, unless when that door was put in was when they added the deck. All speculation, however by the looks of the venting, he thinks there very well could be a full concrete pad under there. It might help to know he was a Contractor here in California. 🌼🌼

    I know Janey said she couldn’t take out the asphalt now because of finances and big trucks but I would at least get rid of the majority of it on the orchard side! I would make that my first project. It is an eye-sore.
    I agree with everyone else about the bridge to your office door. That won’t work for you. I also would prioritize what ever kind of pool you end up with. Trust me when I tell you the time your kids are kids goes by soooooo fast! You don’t want to miss that time spent in the pool with friends and family! Blink and they will be off to college! My sincere hope is that your channel explodes with views and the finances will all change❤ also I hope you pick up more sponsors!

      If it was me, now that the painting is almost done, I’d put asphalt removal as priority #1. It is pricey but definitely cheaper removing it than installing it. It is going to make a mess removing it and better the mess now. There is so much of it.

    Sometimes less really is more. It feels a tad overdesigned. The jacuzzi, the container pool, the gazebo, the dry riverbed etc . Just a coat of paint has already done wonders. Add more plants and trees, a new deck and fence, do something about the cracked driveway, and the property would be lovely. But then, I suppose you need "the Wow factor" for TH-cam and to make it worthwhile for a landscape architect.
