    I hope you have been enjoying our series on shade. Today is design #1. I will take you through the design step by step. This design is a shade bed in front of the woods. The design software I used is called PRO Landscape. It is a professional software program that I used when I was a landscaper. I am on the hunt for a good homeowner app or software for all of you, so hopefully I can find one for you. I hope you are inspired by today's degign! If you have not seen the first 4 videos on shade perennials combos, shade conifers, shade flowering shrubs and shade perennials, please feel free to check them out!

    I love how you create a design right over the photo of the space. It helps seeing the space develop one plant at a time. Your design looks beautiful.

    I love cardboard! I save it all winter to use in my yard as well as my daughters. Sooooo much better than landscape material. I know your grandkids will get so much fun out of the path! Mine run along the space between my perennial garden and hedge and have enjoyed it for years. Looking forward to seeing your new bed. Your plant choices are always great! I can’t wait for Spring to start shopping for some of them to add to my yard. Thank you for fun channel.

      @gardeningTLC  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You are right. I think I am going to do the cardboard instead of removing the sod.....I don't want to nick up or cut all the tree roots, well and that it is a lot less work. I will have a ton of cardboard once all the spring inventory begins to arrive.

      I have a pile of saved cardboard as well. Over the past 2 years, several new garden beds have been created with the lasagna method. I have plans for more this season.

    Wow! First let me say, What a great name! I’ve recently stumbled on your videos and they are packed with lots of information given in a direct manner. Love it! This is my first year on this property and am building a flower farm. There will be lots of flower beds for cutting intermingled with landscaped beds/berms/seating areas for relaxing, photos and beauty to be enjoyed during events.
    At times it’s overwhelming. Love how you break it down into manageable sections. Still looking for my “go to” supplier” I’ve always bought plugs/liners or small bare root. I would like the base plants to be larger, looking like they have been here for a couple years! Thank you for sharing your knowledge!

    I love this idea. We have a lot a large trees on the edge of our yard so this design will be very helpful. I do have a "what would Michelle do question?" We have an area, very similar to the area behind your house, that you recently designed in your other shade design video. The big difference for us is that when the sun is overhead in July/Aug, we get full hot afternoon sun. Coneflowers and salvia seem to do well, but what other perennials could we use that will tolerate partial shade for the majority of the time and about 6-8 wks of that full hot afternoon sun in the summer. We're in zone 8A, heavy clay soil.

    Love your videos especially this one. I started last summer with planting evergreen shrubs and a few trees replacing a lawn area next to the drive. It already looks awesome. It’s now time for the perennials. Love the goatsbeard so definitely will get those. And will plant a few forsythias in the wooded area. Already replanted hostas and ferns that were totally overgrown in other areas. Hostas are peeking out already. Ferns need a bit more time. Had a ton of both. Can’t wait for it. Daffodils are looking great too. Will plant more in the fall. Probably relocate some bulbs.

    I’m not sure about Huchera yet, have to see if it comes back this year, I hear a lot of comments of it disappearing over winter, I’m hoping for its return.

    Love this design! I have a similar situation in my backyard and you have inspired me! My focus this year is on a north facing slope under mature trees. One side is steep and this is where im struggling. Just groundcovers or a mix of plants and dwarf shrubs? Its only 6 ft top to bottom, and the bottom meets a sidewalk. This is such an awkward spot that i think many viewers in older neighborhoods might have.

    What would Michelle do? We have a steep bank beside the driveway probably 6’ high by 25’ long with around a 30 degree angle. What a great channel! I am in a mid city older area in zone 8a but we have had 2 very severe cold spells in the last 3 winters with a lot of wind so I'm looking for plants hardy in colder zones that are also able to withstand the heat and high humidity of our summers. Just to round out the challenge I have a long narrow (68" wide) side yard in full deep shade on the north side of my house. I have a 7 ft wood privacy fence on the property line and a neighbor's house about 15' ft beyond that. The space is only used for access between my front and back yard but I need something to screen the view from my windows on that side of my house. So I'm looking for an evergreen shrub or small tree that is taller than wide and can be maintained at 22 - 15 feet in very deep shade. I plan to interplant with shorter interesting shrubs to break up the monotony.
    Any suggestions

    Please help
    I have a garage bed that is facing south but has a giant mature maple tree right next to it.
    If this tree was not there it would be full sun, I have tried growing many different plants here both sun and shade but it just doesn’t look good and things struggle.
    This year I purchased a bench to go under the window and have thought about putting a few pots next to the bench but am unsure if this is the way to go.
    The bed is 25 feet long and about 8 feet wide the tree is about 5 feet away.

    Beautiful! What is the distance between the tree line and the beginning of where you plant? My WWMD question is about septic areas - around the tanks, the field and the mound. Mostly the tanks which are about 100 feet outside the living room windows, 30x15 oval area in full sun.

      It is 70 feet to the west of the house and gets full sun after it passes the house until just after mid day. It is a blank slate so I want to make it attractive and I love to garden. It is 6 ft tall and we don't really want to go over the top of it.

    Thank you for your fantastic videos! Your trees look like pines & oaks, so I'm wondering: can forsythia and other shrubs also be planted under hemlocks? I was recently warned about hemlocks' shallow root system and something called a "no-cut zone" around their drip line that I was told not to plant inside of (unless I misunderstood). So how close to the dripline of the mature trees can your new bed start? And is it different for hemlocks? (I have a row of them and want to plant underneath them to create a privacy screen that will reach about 5-6 ft tall) Thanks, again, for your videos!

      I do not know about the hemlocks..sorry. I would check with your local extension office.

      @@gardeningTLC Thanks for that quick reply! I tend to forget about the extension office, so thank you for reminding me. I’ll try that!

    I need a sun loving video, preferrable with a few Spartans in it in a space that is approx 60 feet long x 15 to 20 feet wide. Gardening zone 8, dry environment but plenty of supplemental water.

      Excellent! Thank you for this episode. I have lived in a condo for 35 years and now that I have a house with 4 acres. This has really given me some direction.

    I love this video because I have a wooded area in my yard I want to address. My situation is that it is my neighbors wooded area, right at my property line. It's not maintained in any way and is full of grapevine, Virginia creeper (so invasive), poison ivy and weeds. All invade my property. How would you handle keeping those things out of the space in front of the woods?

      @gardeningTLC  หลายเดือนก่อน

      That is tough as it is not your property. Can you have a conversation with the homeowner?

    What direction is the new bed facing?

      @gardeningTLC  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      South. The tree line is north... so with the overhanging branches it gets a little morning and a little late evening sun....
