    I dyed some 'Green' = (un dyed in their natural state) Micarta knife scales for some Becker knives using an empty Jam jar, the jar is plenty tall enough for knife or pistol scales and does not use a large amount of Rit dye, I used dental floss instead of wire. I also did not continue to boil the dye solution while the Micarta scales were submerged, I brought the bottled water to a boil, added it to the jar, poured in what I thought was a decent amount of dye, stirred the solution with a popsicle stick and submerged the scales into the solution for 25 minutes. The Micarta took to the Brown Rit dye quite nice! I was unaware that G10 could be dyed in a similar way, thanks for the video, well done Sir!

  • @Baruch-Hashem

    dye scale not so secret. Only 5 minutes at a time, rinse, evaluate color. Then if darker is desired, due again for 5 more minutes, and so on. You are right, after 15 minutes, they do not take up much more dye. Only other tip, and this may make be shocking, but usually you do not need to disassemble the knife at all! Just have a compressor to blow out all the water when done and use a little WD-40 once (the WD stands for water displacer) This is a great video and it is fun to do. (I have never tried bleech to lighten, may need to on a few someday) BTW, for some knives, a little dye job makes them more valuable to other collectors for sale or trade if it looks good. I tried painting metal and even micrata scales a few times, usually badly dissapointed. One exception, I painted a black micarta hinderer scale it gold, it looked terrible, then I sanded it and it became amazing and I sold the scale! Have fun.

    Most inspiring video I've seen on dying scales is one where the guy takes a couple of tbsp of liquid dye, pours it in a cup, then adds boiling water. He then take his knife-to-dye, grabbing it by the blade and sticks the scale side of the knife into the cup, gets the shade of color he wants, puts it in a second glass of water, then rinses the knife under running water, dries it and voila! His justification for not taking the folder apart - stainless steel doesn't dye. Makes total sense to me.

    hey ltk, nice to put a face to the voice, it's not "i thought you would be taller", but your voice makes you sound "younger"- (i think there's a compliment in there somewhere!)-keep up the good work bud.........

  • @pedroperalta5719
    @pedroperalta5719 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    The reason for the detergent is to add surface active agents, aka surfactants, which essentially reduce water surface tension and enable the dye to penetrate the scales more effectively. Just out of curiosity what temperature are you at? I think I’m going to try this out on my Bestech Kendo, like the way it accents the grain in the G-10.
