They were both wrong because neither of them took the relationship seriously beyond having sex and bragging about each other's basketball statistics. When push came to shove to have some serious conversations, both of them chickened out. Monica wanted her basketball stage to shine more than she wanted Quincy yet still demanded his loyalty and Quincy used his family turmoil between his parents as reason to pull a Jody on Monica and start romancing other women. So clearly they both have ego issues that are getting in the way of sustaining each other's trust, not just the trust the they won't fool around on each other with other people but also that they will go to each other for support in times of need without letting their emotions cause them to talk past each other and point blame!
Q had a lot of wounds he didn't clear up with his family and I guess didn't feel Monica would be understanding enough to hear him out so it was easy for him to go and get a quick fix from other women rather than be bothered with her anger which likely only tried Q's patience. I would argue Monica didn't do enough to make it work either because that scene in the bleachers was telling: she would rather start than support Quincy through his struggles with his dad. Sure she can't fix his parent's relationship for him and Q does kind of have to accept that that's between his parents and there's nothing he can really do about it, but a little more empathy from Monica when he wanted to talk to her about it would have been nice. At the end when she comes in and he's engaged to Carol it seemed like she was swooping in as the curtain was closing and trying to beg him for forgiveness almost like, "Man, I messed up! I didn't know what a good thing I had with Quincy despite his temper tantrums. I need to make amends and try one last time to convince him to be with me!" So I would argue they were both immature (or shortsighted) in their approach to the bond. I wouldn't put it all on Quincy.
I think what most people didn't realize is that he would lay down everything for her. If she needed him, he would be there for her. He was just asking her to be there for him during one the roughest times in his life. She couldn't do it at this time.

If Monica had stayed that night, what would've changed? The only reason he went pro was because his father told him education comes first. It was nothing more than rebellion. Hadn't watch this movie in forever, but this scene pissed me off. 1. When they were at the club and he started to be forceful with the kissing and she said no and to stop...idc if it's the bf/gf, when your lover says no you stop. 2. She realizes something is wrong and that he's drunk, so she said she'll come by later so they can talk, but he gets an attitude and gets sulky and said no "I got curfew" 3. He then decides to embarrass her at the dorm meeting with another woman on purpose and acted like that to "prove a point" fast forward years later when she met him in the hospital. That same embarrassment I felt when he introduced his fiancee. They're both at fault, but he was being a complete ass. As much as I want my lover to be with me all the time, I know school and ball were and should be important. Just like ball was important to him too. And he knew she couldn't get in trouble and yet he acted that way🙄

I could be reaching but I feel like she just didn’t know how to be there emotionally for him because she never got the emotional support from her mom. Quincy was mad at his dad lashed out at Monica over it similar to how Monica lashed out at her mother when she was mad about Quincy being engaged. He at least called himself out later in the movie about how wrong he was in that situation right before they played the climactic late night basketball game. I'm glad they ended up together in the end, they understood each other in ways nobody else could.
Quincy's behavior towards Monica was foolishly unnecessary. It's okay to be disappointed & upset at the negative actions of his father towards his mother. I think Q was wrong to expect Monica to risk her position on the basketball team for him. He could have went back to her dorm and they could have talked or better yet he could have went to a professional therapist instead. Nevertheless, I am glad they eventually made up and got married. It would be nice to see a sequel.
Q was immature and not thinking clearly. He was selfish in that moment as he was only focusing on what was going on in his life. Since it was his first year in college it’s common for someone to act that way. Also with being a star in everyone’s eyes he expected everyone to drop what they’re doing for him, which is what is seen with Monica. Q was used to seeing the household of his mama being just a stay at home mother. Prime example was when him and monica were kids and he tried to make her ride on his bike. Q was expecting her to risk what she worked so hard for because her being a working woman with big goals and dreams didn't matter. He just wanted her under him like he saw with his parents.

Q is selfish. He expected her to throw away the position that she worked so hard for just to "be there" Sometimes a man has to put his woman's goals ahead of his own issues. He should have told her that he was upset about the cheating of his father and that he needed a little time, instead of just friend zoning her.

They were both wrong because neither of them took the relationship seriously beyond having sex and bragging about each other's basketball statistics. When push came to shove to have some serious conversations, both of them chickened out. Monica wanted her basketball stage to shine more than she wanted Quincy yet still demanded his loyalty and Quincy used his family turmoil between his parents as reason to pull a Jody on Monica and start romancing other women. So clearly they both have ego issues that are getting in the way of sustaining each other's trust, not just the trust the they won't fool around on each other with other people but also that they will go to each other for support in times of need without letting their emotions cause them to talk past each other and point blame!
Kristina Williams that's so true, I got mad towards the ending because it felt like she's was the only one trying to make the relationship work.
Q had a lot of wounds he didn't clear up with his family and I guess didn't feel Monica would be understanding enough to hear him out so it was easy for him to go and get a quick fix from other women rather than be bothered with her anger which likely only tried Q's patience. I would argue Monica didn't do enough to make it work either because that scene in the bleachers was telling: she would rather start than support Quincy through his struggles with his dad. Sure she can't fix his parent's relationship for him and Q does kind of have to accept that that's between his parents and there's nothing he can really do about it, but a little more empathy from Monica when he wanted to talk to her about it would have been nice. At the end when she comes in and he's engaged to Carol it seemed like she was swooping in as the curtain was closing and trying to beg him for forgiveness almost like, "Man, I messed up! I didn't know what a good thing I had with Quincy despite his temper tantrums. I need to make amends and try one last time to convince him to be with me!" So I would argue they were both immature (or shortsighted) in their approach to the bond. I wouldn't put it all on Quincy.

If Monica had stayed that night, what would've changed? The only reason he went pro was because his father told him education comes first. It was nothing more than rebellion. She fought to the very end to get that scholarship. He could've been more willing to compromise with Monica by walking to her room like she offered. If he felt some type of way about her choosing curfew, it should've been addressed at that moment period.

Hadn't watch this movie in forever, but this scene pissed me off.
1. When they were at the club and he started to be forceful with the kissing and she said no and to stop...idc if it's the bf/gf, when your lover says no you stop.
2. She realizes something is wrong and that he's drunk, so she said she'll come by later so they can talk, but he gets an attitude and gets sulky and said no "I got curfew"
3. He then decides to embarrass her at the dorm meeting with another woman on purpose and acted like that to "prove a point" fast forward years later when she met him in the hospital. That same embarrassment I felt when he introduced his fiancee.
They're both at fault, but he was being a complete ass. As much as I want my lover to be with me all the time, I know school and ball were and should be important. Just like ball was important to him too. And he knew she couldn't get in trouble and yet he acted that way🙄

He’s never had to put it all on the line for her. At that point, it’s only words. So, what it looks like is him asking her to give up her dreams to comfort him. Her spot on the team wasn’t secure, but his was. I’m hearing the other comments out, but I haven’t been convinced on how they were BOTH in the wrong.
I could be reaching but I feel like she just didn’t know how to be there emotionally for him because she never got the emotional support from her mom. She couldn’t give or didn’t know how to give something she never had. He on the other hand came from what he thought was an emotionally strong family and when it all came crashing down and she wasn’t there for him he didn’t know who to trust. He rarely showed emotion but u can tell he really loved her from the things he would say especially the lines between them “I’d never ask you to choose,” and him saying “You’d never have too” like he’d choose her over everything. B-ball was everything to her but she was everything to him. However in the end she realized that he was everything to her all along as well... that being the reason she said b-ball wasn’t “fun for her anymore because he was missing from it” Aside from just this scene if u watch everything after it u can see all he wanted from that point on was for her to show him she cared. He acted like an asshole until he got that from her. Not the best way of communicating between two adults but hey it wouldn’t be a movie without the dramatics 🤷🏽♀️ The fact that he even played the game for his heart showed that he wasn’t over her either.

Quincy was mad at his dad lashed out at Monica over it similar to how Monica lashed out at her mother when she was mad about Quincy being engaged. He at least called himself out later in the movie about how wrong he was in that situation right before they played the climactic late night basketball game. I'm glad they ended up together in the end, they understood each other in ways nobody else could.
