I went to a predominately white university and all the girls, Black and White loved this movie and watched it in their dorm rooms. It was a beautiful thing to see that we (Blacks and Whites) could connect over this movie.
The irony is Monica's presences mattered to Quincy that night he needed her. Reality is she didnt know how to give it becasue it wasnt given to her from the person she needed it the most from(her mom)
@@torealburk528 Good point. However, she had her own priorities. She even offered them to go back to her dorm due to her curfew. But he didn’t want to. She kind of didn’t have a choice. Missing curfew would have costed her playing time
Monica said towards the end the she was all about ball...making it hard to balance that relationship/school life. when she went overseas she got a eye opener of how lonely it was only having basketball!Monica lived out what she saw...her mother was all about "family" neglecting her wants!Monica chose her wants (which was ball) and it almost costs her Quincey! As for Quincey....he also lived a life where he didnt see his parents "support"each other...his father also chose his career over family! BUT when it came to him playing ball that was the common ground his parents supported him in.So you essentially you got two broken/selfish people trying to hold each other down and dont know how to.
She said a lot of things bad about her because she was angry about Q's engagement. I knew that slap was coming, it was just a matter of time. But her mother was selfish in her response which could be taken as callous and cold. She insulted her sport, and showed envy and insecurity
Naw if you watch the beginning of the movie, she’s felt that way about her mom since she was a kid. What she said about her mom had nothing to do with the engagement even though that’s what the conversation started off as…but then it transformed to how her mother was and how she felt her mom was treated as a house wife.
Later her mother admitted she ultimately was somewhat jealous of Monica's ability to fight and go against the grain in a way she never could which gave her the confidence and courage to speak up and tell Quincy how she really felt before it was too late, at least some good ultimately come from this in a roundabout way.
Such an eye opening scene from both characters. When I was growing up this was one of my favorites cause I was a hooper, but now that I'm grown and have been through life a bit, I love it cause of the depth of the characters
Sanaa and Alfre always give great mother/ daughter chemistry on screen. I hope they’ll do a 4th film as mother and daughter. For those wondering they’ve done Love & Basketball (obviously, lol), The Family That Preys and Something New together as mother and daughter.
This is one of the many parts I hated in the movie. The girl expressed that she doesn’t like the way her mom is being treated by her dad and the mom slaps her in the face. Then the girl apologized even though the mom was the one in the wrong and the girl was only expressing her concerns. Then the mom goes on saying that the moment that she was the most proud of the girl was when she wore makeup for a high school dance. Um hello? You daughter is a star athlete. She played basketball for a good college and over seas.
It was the way Monica reduced her Mom to being just a cook and wash woman of her husband's dirty draws. While her mom was cooking and cleaning, her father was out making a living for the entire family. Did she think about that?
I think that was one of the themes of this movie. Look at the two main women in Monica's life growing up. Her mom and Quincy's mom. Both played traditional housewife roles. They both put all their energy into their family but never invested that same time into their own growth. For them, that was how you made a happy home. But in the end Quincy's dad cheated (woo, many times) and Camille put her dream on hold. Not saying their lives were wasted, but from Monica's perspective she's trying to figure out what marriage, family and following her dream look like and she cant really look to these women for that. In the end you see Monica playing and Quincy cheering her on with their daughter. They learned they didnt have to be like their parents. They could make marriage work on their own terms.
I see the slap differently. Its about what it takes to make a Home, it's about Mom sacrificing their dreams for their family and kids. Its about Monica not seeing that, not realizing that, and not being grateful for that. For her mother to quietly do that for so many years bringing up the kids, being prissy. Cooking and Cleaning is hard work by the way, not the work itself, but doing it day after day, week after week, year after year. The question is Why did she do it.
my parents came to all my games, even the away ones and one time I was bitching to one of my friends on the team about how my dad wouldnt give me money to buy a drink from the concession stand for the boys game because "he brought water" (which when ur in high school is super embarrassing lmao) and my friend looked at me and just said "at least your parents go to your games" and thats ALWAYS stuck with me even to this day because they really came to all my games except one and that was because they both had the flu lol
Camille, Monica is right. You should have stood up for yourself when your husband came in with those pizzas. After spending hours cooking. Heck, I would have been FURIOUS. REAL FURIOUS at him. Also, you could have been a wife, mother and caterer. Women have multitasked since the beginning of time. Shoot, go and work. There's no law against it.
Y'all always hollering bout women multitasking, men do it too. How many men out working everyday to pay ALL the bills, while everybody laid up at home? If he stopped bringing in the check, all they asses be out on the street.

Monica's mother, Camille, is 100% the primary reason why Monica has low self-esteem & insecurities about herself. Camille never took an interest in Monica's hobby or in Monica as a person. Simply because Monica's hobby didn't appeal to her & she viewed Monica as unfeminine.Throughout the movie Camille insinuated to Monica that she was unattractive by making underhanded remarks. Camille intentionally created the gap between her & Monica. Yet, is confused as to why she doesn't understand Monica smh

That scene hits so different, I played football in highschool and I think my parents might have came to one or two games (really one each). It definitely mattered!!!
Monica was completely out of pocket. She was very disrespectful to her mother. Homemakers are looked down upon in american society now and it's a shame. The feminist movement has destroyed the family unit. The "Stay at home mom" has so much value. My Grandmother was a homemaker while my Grandfather worked and together they raised a wonderful family.
Exactly! And if mom was a single mom working to support the kids Monica would be knocked up and hating and blaming her mom for not being there.!🤣🤣🤣satan really has turned this world upside down!🙏🙏🙏🙏! Honor thy mother and father that your days will be long here on earth, period.
For reals I get her point at her wanting her in her games, but dang did she come off as ungrateful, to both her mom and dad I'm sure both the mom and dad made sacrifices, dad's not home all day to pay bills and make sure food is home, and Mama's home making it and being there for her daughters.
I see what you’re saying, but that was not the case Here she did not look down on her mother, for being a homemaker. She resented her mother for choosing her homemaker life over, her and not embracing who her daughter for being a tomboy, always comparing her to her sister, who was a feminine woman so if anything, her mother set it up, so that Monica eventually looked down on her, because she started out, looking down on Monica, for not being what she thought a woman should be, and she even admitted that she was jealous of Monica, because Monica knew who she was, and did not stray from it
Very good and bad points by both mother and daughter. Clearly the mom loves her daughter and the person she becomes but also is a tad bit jealous that the daughter is outspoken and doesn't want to deal with old fashion gender roles of a woman . That's prolly one reason mom did not attend games as it was to much to stomach for her at times. The daughter on the other hand didn't see all the stuff and setbacks mom endured behind the scene to ensure that the household will continue to prosper.
I mean her daughters are grown , she can be a caterer at that point or since monica left for college. I think both had their positions. The mom felt monica was ashamed of her for being a house wife & monica felt she didnt care about her basketball. The mom may have felt monica didn't care if she was there as she thought of it as a boys game saying u had daddy & the coaches. Maybe they should have talked more.
Monica seems kinda selfish to me...she mad at her momma for not coming to her games even though she was cooking and cleaning and taking care of her family...would she have been happier if her mom didn't come to her games because she was too busy with a catering business?? Spoiled children never acknowledge the sacrifices their parents make for them smh...how about be mad at your daddy for disregarding your momma over and over again or is he good cause he made it to the games?
That’s not selfish. Her mom didn’t think ball matter and never took the time to go to the games. She knew that ball meant a lot for her child but never did anything about it.
Monica was ashamed that her mother never stood her grounds as a woman. Even as a man myself, I still think it’s disrespectful for A man to come home with pizzas for the kids after his wife’s slays in the kitchen for hours to prepare a nice meal. It shows that he has no respect for the time she put into cooking in the meal
No, that’s not selfish at all I was Monica in a way I use to dance a lot and my mom never came to none of my performances, using “being a wife, taking care of family” is an excuse for a mother , I have a son now too and I couldn’t imagine not being their for my son to support him, even if she didn’t like her daughter being a basketball player she still should’ve supported what her child loved , people always wanna point the fingers at the “child” when her mom was completely wrong.
@@kekedavis8858 Yes, it is selfish because some people didn't have ANYONE come to ANYTHING they were involved in and it wasn't because their parent was actually at home cooking for them and cleaning up behind them. Monica had her dad and sister at her games while her mama was at home essentially being a maid.
THIS THE MOVIE CANT NOBODY TELL ME NUN ION KNOW ABOUT THIS MOVIE I KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS MOVIE SO YOU CANT TRY TO TELL ME NOTHING CAUSE I LIOVE THIS MOVIE
I go to everything.....even my sons practices.....i cud never imagine not being there if 1 of my boys got hurt practicing. And it happened.....my youngest had his hand crushed between 2 helmets and im glad we were there for him. A month ago one of my oldest sons teammates snapped his wrist falling back and none of his parents were there.........as he lay on the ground yelling in pain with the coaches at his side......but its not the same as 1 of ur parents. When my son was 7 he won his 1st football championship......i was surprised of the parents that werent there to see their sons win that. There must have been 5 kids with no one to celebrate with, just dropped off for the game......i was later told those kids were to call the parents for a ride when it was over.
My husband shared a similar experience with me about lack of supportive parents for school activities ( basketball, football, track & field, ROTC). He was a starter with great stats but never really celebrated his accomplishments. That was deep conversation we had about our childhood. It’s the reason being visible/support is at the top of the priority list. Yes I have a busy career but nope my family comes first. We support each other as much as we can. For me it was being heard during my childhood. My husband presence & attentive listening skills ☺️ He literally takes me for a long walk in the park so I can talk , get a away road trip so we can talk lol 😆 Hey I like to talk… As parents we openly communicate with our little one trying to make sure all needs are met. Always room for improvement.
NaturalDivineGoddess Sadly, I’m getting divorced to a Sista who lived a similar life. I don’t know what happened or who got into her head, but the more I “accomplished”, the more bitter she got. After 20 years, I couldn’t do anymore. There’s no shame in being a housewife. Especially one that could come and go as they please and did whatever they wanted. Last year was the nail in the coffin for us. During my brother’s (small) destination wedding, everyone got to go around and introduce themselves. All of the bridesmaids were sorors and HIGHLY successful. That was the turning point for us because she stated that she didn’t want to be known as the “Doctor’s Wife” and that she lived in my “shadow”. What she didn’t know is that every one of those ladies were single, divorced, or baby-mamas; despite being lawyers, judges, doctors, etc. Scenes like this crush me because I was never able to successfully “stop” her from doing anything. She wanted to start a business; I financed it. She wanted to take classes, I said go for it. But we both viewed attention differently. She loves it and I hate it. Lastly, after that relationship, I think I’m done for life. I overcame a lot to get here, but I hate the spotlight. I almost died in the Army and 3x last year and all I ever heard is “what about me” or “what are people gonna think”? I’m 40 with six degrees and 2 doctorates and I’d rather die young or die alone than suffer from the last 15 years the way that I did.
@@Mae-kg6kt This scene was right after she saw Q at the hospital & found out he was engaged. Monica got upset because her mom told her to just send them a wedding gift when she asked her mom what she should do. She still had feelings for Q.
It was very similar to how Quincy lashed out at Monica in college when the real issue was his anger over what happened with his dad, there were a lot of themes in this movie that kept reappearing with the characters no matter what stage of life they were in.
It was the way her mom responded or told her to respond to the situation. Like if my daughter came to me or my son came to me and they still have feelings for their ex and I know that it’s hurting them. I can give them some compassion and understanding whether I agree or not I could just tell him just follow your heart. I can give a honest answer but I could show them that I understand where they’re coming from.
Her mother needed to hear that. It’s tough growing up as a girl and seeing your mother make herself small to fit into the perception of her husband. Parents aren’t perfect, but sometimes they need to hear how their actions affected their children’s behavior.
Monica was being disrespectull and that is a horrible offense. I never spoke to mom in a hostile or sass mouth way. Her mom sacrificed too to give them a good life. Just because you are different does not mean you disrespect your parents. PERIOD.
Rosa Hodge Well true but Monica mom was little verbally abusive, Over her because she was into basketball in being a Tomboy in Monica mom didn’t like it yeah Monica couldn’t disrespect her because she was little support but she was into being a house mom!!!! @@Du808-o8k Nothing can justify being disrespectful to your parents. I have a daughter ...without me...she would not have had the quality of life I gave to her. I sacrificed so much..So Monica needs to check her mouth.
Rosa Hodge Rosa Hodge but isn’t that what we’re supposed to do? Sacrifice to give our children a good life. Much respect to you for being a good parent, but we don’t deserve a cookie for being good parents. Kids don’t ask to be here, so sacrificing for them should be expected.
@@a.m7557 No human being is perfect. Don't look at the imperfections of your parent. Be grateful. Seriously. Parents do what their suppose to do and they try and sacrafice. That should be recognized and appreciated. They have feelings too.
Eric Matterson I forgot I even commented on this 😂 but yeah, it won’t be nearly as good but they did have a daughter at the end. They could do a storyline using her
I think in some universe, all 3 movies(The Woods, Brown Sugar, and Love & Basketball), they're kind of connected in a way, considering, they're literally childhood/teen crushes(Sidney and Dre-Brown Sugar, Alicia and Mike-The Woods, and Q and Monica-L&B;), not great at communicating(Q and Monica-L&B, Harper and Robin-TBM, and Sidney and Dre-BS), and not to mention, the backstory of their relationships all started in the early or mid-80s.

Sanaa’s characters STAY getting slapped 😂
This is why in life, a person should have both an original and a backup plan.
Alfre is queen!
Claire Mitzuki Not. Monica is right.
I think monica just wanted her mom to take up for herself alot more even against her own dad. She felt her mom was powerless at times in the house.
“Oh no, are they cursing they mammas in Spain!?” 😭 the only reason i came here! I say this randomly throughout the day! 😂
That slap was like a thunder strike you can hear that over seas!!
THIS THE MOVIE CANT NOBODY TELL ME NUN ION KNOW ABOUT THIS MOVIE I KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS MOVIE SO YOU CANT TRY TO TELL ME NOTHING CAUSE I LIOVE THIS MOVIE
She’s always getting slapped 😂
MANE MY MOTHER SLAPPED ME LIKE THAT ONE TIME WHEN I WAS 16
why?
You probably needed it.
😅🤣😂
Why
2:35 her face tho😂
Love this movie
My husband shared a similar experience with me about lack of supportive parents for school activities ( basketball, football, track & field, ROTC). He was a starter with great stats but never really celebrated his accomplishments. That was deep conversation we had about our childhood. It’s the reason being visible/support is at the top of the priority list. Yes I have a busy career but nope my family comes first. We support each other as much as we can.
For me it was being heard during my childhood. My husband presence & attentive listening skills ☺️
He literally takes me for a long walk in the park so I can talk , get a away road trip so we can talk lol 😆
Hey I like to talk…
As parents we openly communicate with our little one trying to make sure all needs are met. Always room for improvement.

Sadly, I’m getting divorced to a Sista who lived a similar life.
Alfrie Woodard is such a phenominal actress!!!
In retrospect this scene is happening so fast...this mom is about to break mentally no she is being confronted with the truth.
Is funny how quick kids are so quick and judge a mother when we love our children no matter what .. ❤️
Modern classic!
What was your presentation about? Gender roles and stereotypes?
sixunderground2002 actually, i want to know too!
She was angry about the breakup with Q and lashed out on her mom--that was the real issue
This scene was 5 years after her breakup with Q it has nothing with him
@@Mae-kg6kt The hospital scene when she met Qs fiancee was a lot more recent
They Need to get back together
1:30--"Jump up shot, lol"
Lol
I love this movie
Her mother needed to hear that. It’s tough growing up as a girl and seeing your mother make herself small to fit into the perception of her husband. Parents aren’t perfect, but sometimes they need to hear how their actions affected their children’s behavior.
It Mattered Momma. If you did Sports your felt that.
Life lesson mommy, TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR ACTIONS!
After that last scene I bet mom never missed another game
What's the name of the piano song that starts at 3:25 ?
Monica was being disrespectull and that is a horrible offense. I never spoke to mom in a hostile or sass mouth way. Her mom sacrificed too to give them a good life. Just because you are different does not mean you disrespect your parents. PERIOD.
Rosa Hodge Well true but Monica mom was little verbally abusive, Over her because she was into basketball in being a Tomboy in Monica mom didn’t like it yeah Monica couldn’t disrespect her because she was little support but she was into being a house mom!!!! So Monica had anger in hurt inside of her see why she already been over q because she love q...
@@rosahodge420 I mean that's what you signed up for when you decided to have a child..
@@a.m7557 No human being is perfect. Don't look at the imperfections of your parent. Be grateful. Seriously. Parents do what their suppose to do and they try and sacrafice. That should be recognized and appreciated. They have feelings too.
Ugh love & basketball 2 plz :( i love that movie
I don't think it would be nearly as good because all of the storylines are resolved.
YES!

I said it years ago if i was ever famous snd they want to do a biopic of my life i would only have two women play my mom maybe three. Alfre Woodard, Viola Davis or Dani Gurira. All three are strong women just like my mom and would do her justice.
Stokes!... Mariah Stokes!
Sanaa Lathan Is Moze
The funniest part of this scene is that she defaced Monica with a hand full of flour.
