  • O.K. Corral Shootout! WYATT EARP: RETURN TO TOMBSTONE marked Hugh O’Brian’s return to his most memorable role, Marshal Wyatt Earp. The movie was an instant smash in its premiere on CBS in 1994 and became one of the most requested movies among film buffs and western movie and TV fans. By taking scenes from the classic black and white ABC-TV series, “The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp” (1955-61), the producers created flashbacks for an all-new story set in 1914 and shot entirely in Tombstone. It was the first, and still only, Wyatt Earp movie actually shot on location on the actual locations. The new footage and the old footage, combined, were then colorized. A new music score was added, and a cast loaded with familiar faces and western icons were hired to complete the unique Featurization process. Special appearances included Bruce Boxleitner, Harry Carey, Jr., Bo Hopkins, Alex Hyde-White, Martin Kove, Don Meredith and even Paul Brinegar from the original Wyatt Earp TV series. To top it off, country music legend Johnny Cash was hired to sing verses of the famous theme song rearranged by Dana Walden, who also scored the movie, to link the new and old footage.

I'm 81 today and when I was a schoolboy I loved watching the Tombstone TV series with Hugh O'Brien in the '50s.....Back then it was in B&W, in rather small TV sets with no remote control...even so it was like being in a movie theater for us watching this at home !
I loved so much this movie that I'm downloading it to make sure i can keep it safe.

I always thought that Hugh Obrian was a little overdressed in his portrayal of Wyatt Earp, but that is a minor point. Wyatt Earp was a man's man and so was ex-Marine drill sergeant Hugh O'Brian, also a man's man. Well suited to role and very convincing in the part. He had the necessary gravitas in spades.

    WOW!!!!!!!!!!
To say that I've been hoping for years that this movie would show up on TH-cam is the understatement of the last five years. To say that I'm a HUGE fan of Word on Westerns is the understatement of the decade!!!!!!!! I had the honor of speaking with Hugh O' Brian over the phone several years before he passed, and I think that while playing the character of Wyatt Earp, Hugh also played himself, much as John Wayne and Jim Arness did. All three of those men played Western characters that have become icons to those of us who love them, and it doesn't hurt to believe that all three men had a bit of their characters in them, too. THANK YOU from a 59-year old that has never quite grown up!!!!!!!!!!

A remarkable retrospective not only of Wyatt Earp, the legendary lawman of the West, but of Hugh O'Brian's popular TV series of the later 1950's and earlier 1960's made by the avid Western lover and dedicated Western producer, Rob Word. The taut scenes, acting and dialogues go to make the retrospective of the events leading upto the famous gunfight at the OK Corral both serious and largely realistic. The courage and dedicationof lawmen like Wyatt Earp to law has tamed the wild West of the 19th century making it liveable for the peace-loving people of the West. Hugh O'Brian's acting has conveyed this aspect of Wyatt Earp's persona rather well. Hats off to Rob Word, Hugh O'Brian, the Directors Fran McDonald and Paul Landres and the screenplay script-writer.

I'm not surprised at all. Since the whole series was based on Stuart Lake's book and Lake was a consultant on the series, the portrayal of the shootout was pretty close to what was in the Lake book, which itself was a close approximation (clouded by personal recollection and incomplete research, at least compared with more recent efforts) of what happened.

The Hugh O'Brian TV series did more to cement Wyatt Earp as a heroic figure than anything else. The prior movies had usually used the Stuart N Lake book Frontier Marshal book as source material as did this TV series. It was typical of it's period in that the good were solid honorable men and the bad were dishonorable, evil, and possibly cowardly bad men. Such was and is the power of this television show that the Earp's will always be remembered as such. The movies Tombstone and Wyatt Earp were based on more realistic and humanistic portrayals of the Earp's. No one is all good or all bad, but these great portrayals from the movies just showed that there was a few warts on Wyatt. Hugh O'Brian's portrayal is still the default despite the many inaccuracies.
It always surprises me that factor's that will get a production made. Often have little to do with how it will be received or cost.to produce. It really is a surprise that good shows actually air. The talent that created the now considered great classics often just barely were able to get the production green lit, and then distributed. This was an enjoyable watch Rob.

Only flaw I saw in this was that they mixed some of the Wichita and Dodge City episodes and told them like they took place in Tombstone. But that is a relatively minor flaw. Overall, though, it was a fun movie! Loved the idea of Wyatt going back to Tombstone years later and reminiscing!

Besides being a great actor...few people know that Hugh O'Brian inspired hundreds of thousands of high school students in leadership roles with his HOBY (Hugh O'Brian Youth) program. He was inspired after a meeting in Africa in the 1950's with Dr. Albert Schweitzer, the 1952 Nobel Peace Prize winner. O'Brian was determined to do something positive for young people after his 9-day visit. So began HOBY. It started with just 26 student ambassadors in 1958 and now has eclipsed the half-million mark in 7,200 high schools! O'Brian died in 2016. No other Hollywood actor has ever accomplished as much for youth!

What a pleasure to watch this! Hugh will always be who I think of when I hear the name Wyatt Earp. I discovered the show about six years ago and I have been watching on one channel or another ever since. Five nights a week even now I watch Hugh as Wyatt. I loved Douglas Frowley as his Doc Holliday, he was great and so funny. And Mason Dinehart as his Bat Masterson was also very good. I know he quit acting to become a business man but did he ever do any interviews about his acting career that you know of? Thanks for posting this!

Hello from Australia Rob. A great Life & Legend of Wyatt Earp fan here. I have the entire series of the above which I purchased in 2020, and since then; I have watched the entire series at least Fifteen times over the pas 2 years. I cannot get enough of this story, and I look at every historical programme of this great man. I recently watched an episode of HISTORY HUNTERS which depicted the Crematorium (Pearce Brothers I think) in Los Angeles where Wyatt and his Common Law Wife were cremated. I have followed Bob Boze BELL'S historical recollections of the Earps, and just today; I found your OUTSTANDING programme that has been colourised. WOW WOW WOW! Thank you so much mate. A Brilliant weaving of fact and fiction.

Yes, this has nothing to do with Clint Eastwood, but he is one of the few, who can update, some of his older movies, because he was also the director, to go back and add himself at his current age, so that each movie he wants is updated by himself, also starring himself, playing the same part, but looking back in retrospect on the "history" of the event. The return of the star, remembering the action, as he looks back into time.
Much like you did it with this movie and the television series.

    • @AWordonWesterns
      @AWordonWesterns  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

That would be awesome, Frank. With Clint's old friend Doug McClure as an Executive Producer, CBS agreed to let me do a RAWHIDE Featurization. It would be similar in format as our WYATT EARP, RETURN TO TOMBSTONE with guest stars interspersed throughout the movie, using clips from the RAWHIDE series as flashbacks. The only catch was...Clint had to agree to appear in it. CBS approved $1,000,000 overage for Clint's participation. With an outline for the story, which was crafted to use Clint for only one day, Doug offered that 1-Day fee to Clint. Sadly, for all of us, he turned it down. I understand why, but it sure would have been fun and still be a very watchable film experience today.

This is good. I had never seen it before. I had seen some of the original TV series ( we got a TV when I was five years old about half way through the six year run). I was young enough that it didn't leave many lasting detailed memories. I've seen the Kurt Russel Tombstone movie many times, but I've never watched the Kevin Costner movie all the way through. I've watched a couple of the older movie treatments recently, so I suppose I should watch Costner.
This one, with its blending of old and new footage works very well.

Hugh O' Brian was THE ultimate Wyatt Earp,no offense meant others that have played the part. The original series would not have been the same or as successful had another actor played Earp.

I think Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer were the best cast actors for Wyatt and Doc, in "Tombstone", but there's been a variety of likeable over the years.

The original episode took some liberties, of course, but overall I was surprised how accurate the depiction of the fight and the events leading up to it were depicted according to what was believed at the time and even what is known now.

Hugh's challenge to a " shootout" was cut short by the response of Audie Murphy. Sounds interesting, let's use live ammunition.Audie Murphy was a real hero .The most decorated soldier of the second World War, and received honors from Belgium and France.
