I got my four ceramic coasters at Target for $3 per piece about 8 years ago. They have plants on them and are easily washed, and I’m nowhere near done with them for those two reasons. A good coaster lasts forever and has one of the best value per dollar spent if you do it right - can’t imagine buying a clear plastic one that will be out of trend in 6 months.

The different sized tip pens are used for graphic novels/comics. I’m not saying that one should buy them unnecessarily but they are useful and can run out after a month or two with intense use.

@@shawnaripariI flew through those a lot. Art graphics pens dry fast when you use them alot for art so I could buy 6 packs a years or multiple of particular sizes. Yes- Im a comics artist and I do through these pretty quickly, however I still don't know if I would buy them from temu. I'm very picky about my tools and I find cheap markers don't last long and the tips tend to disintegrate on heavy use. I really like the Staedtler and Sakura Pigma Micron brands for heavy use artists, and they are easy to get at most local art stores. Also I really don't use a huge range, I mostly like the thinner sizes

One thing that helps me, is when I find myself perusing and thinking "Ooo, cute!" I add it to cart, and I just keep adding stuff, but then I don't check out- I just leave it there (cuz you can't wishlist things, cuz they push that fomo thing)- and then make myself close the site. Eventually those things go out of stock or something happens and I forget what it was anyways and I've saved money. I know this won't work for those w/ little will power, but I've def trained myself to sort of 'walk around' with it and then put it back once I realize "No, I don't need this."

I have found that when there's an item, esp a more expensive item, if I add to cart and then close the tab or site, that feeling of wanting it goes away. I have a couple of little flame diffusers that are so beautiful and easy to clean, and I use them every day for much of the year. They do not need distilled water at all. Usually when washi tape is sold in packs of multiple the rolls are shorter than the ones sold individually, so even tho you get more designs you don't get that much more tape itself. Also, when washi tape is sold in a set it tends to have some sort of theme, so if someone is journaling in that aesthetic they will probably use all that tape and it won't get wasted.

I wonder if you’ve considered doing a video covering subscription boxes? I don’t mean Hello Fresh, I mean themed monthly (or quarterly) “curated, themed” boxes. I think truly consumable ones (like snacks from Japan ones, for example) are at least, you know, consumable… you try a bunch of new foods and marvel at the flavour combinations you might never find depending on where you live. But then there are others which are just FULL of knickknacks and enamel pins and keychains and wooden baking spoons, T-shirts and “wearables”, tiny candles… I don’t know. I see a bunch of the pins and things on sites like Poshmark and whenever i watch unboxings, i think “how many t-shirts and baking spoons does one human need?” I feel like it fills a void in us that we all want to be sent a personal, surprise “care package” of goodies by a friend or loved one, but many of our friends and loved ones can’t afford to do that, so we “treat ourselves,” but it’s still a surprise when it gets to the customer… but it’s trying to fill a void, and since so much of the stuff ISN’T what we might’ve bought for ourselves, it all just accumulates without being used. A hundred rolls of washi tape later… you find yourself regifting all the stuff you didn’t want or need anyway, hoping someone else might be able to use it… I don’t know. I always understand the pull to WANT to receive subscription boxes, but when I watch unboxing videos, I just realise how much of it feels like cheap junk that’s just waiting to be donated or regifted. I would be interested to see if you had any further thoughts on the phenomenon of subscription “curated boxes” and how they potentially create a lot of unnecessary, unappreciated “consumption” of items, only to fill a void that never truly gets filled. (I’ve been tempted many times, but the prices have just proved me out since I have no budget for it, so that’s worked out so far for me.)

funny enough I was thinking about subscription boxes yesterday and wondering what has accounted for their longevity. The Ipsy and Causeboxes (now all Alltrue) out there. I think there's some stationery boxes out there too!

    • @21cormorants
      @21cormorants 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

@@shawnaripari I definitely see it as being a combination of elements. One is the feeling of getting a parcel, as if from a friend, full of goodies centred around a theme… If it had been from a friend, that theme would likely be a shared interest of some kind. Sometimes it’s an interest that the person *doesn’t* share in common with any friends, which I think can make them feel less alone, but also emulate that feeling of receiving a care package. I also think the Mystery element of not knowing what it will contain produces its own additional excitement that, even if the box is a letdown one month, you can kind of tell yourself, “yeah but maybe it’s because NEXT month’s will blow this one out of the water!”
Then there’s also the Limited element - special edition book editions, or small release, or exclusive pins, journals, posters, sticker sets, and so on…
For some, posting photos of the items online could make them feel like they have a well-curated Something Special to post photos of, whilst also potentially fostering a sense of community as you browse through similar posts.
There’s also, as ever, the Identity element, where what we buy is often a reflection of who we see ourselves as, and how we want others to see us… these boxes can often reinforce that by giving tangible ties to that person, not just through the items themselves, but through the dedication to a “subscription” itself.
Plus the Novelty element; not knowing what you’ll get is fun, but trying things you wouldn’t otherwise have chosen for yourself (be it an ink, a paper, a wool, a tea, a candle scent, snack, or a randomly selected gemstone, etc…) can create additional excitement and interest. We could all take the same amount of money to the shop and potentially get something we KNOW we’ll love for roughly the same price, and zero on shipping - but sometimes there’s an added satisfaction in trying a candle scent you KNOW you wouldn’t have invested in… but finding reasons to appreciate it anyway, expanding your horizons a little out of necessity as well as a desire to try something new.
There’s a lot of reasons, I think… unboxing itself is another big one, I’d imagine. Even if you’re not recording it to your socials, I think there might be a bit of that glamour associated with it, or there wouldn’t be so much effort put into how these things are thematically packaged in a way that reflects the box’s “identity.”
There are probably more reasons, but those are just a few which come to mind. I think I’d surely enjoy them if I had the disposable income, but the associated clutter of having a bunch of stuff I wouldn’t have chosen for myself amongst all the bits I *do* like would drive me a little crazy, and I’d really feel the consumer-to-donation-to-landfill pipeline working through me in a way that would feel gut-wrenching with where I’m at in life right now. But it also makes me wonder if I’m the only one thinking about it in this light?

@@shawnariparialso, yes, you’re right, there are boxes for everything! Nerd boxes, witch boxes, Harry Potter adjacent boxes (note: unrelated to witch boxes), stationery boxes, book boxes, yarn and knitting and crochet boxes, stereotypically manly stuff boxes (think pocket tools, leather journals, wooden stuff…)… Japanese snack boxes, tea boxes, coffee boxes, cosmetics boxes, I think there are alcohol subscription boxes, meat grilling boxes?? I feel like I might’ve seen something like that, but maybe I’m misremembering. Dog treat & toy boxes, so probably also cat stuff too…! If you can think of it, there’s probably a subscription box for it.
You know, it’s very reminiscent of Advent Calendars, too. 😅 (speaking of dog subscription boxes, there’s also dog treat advent calendars! A lot of your reasons are not very convincing, but in the end it’s TEMU. The biggest problem is you won’t get what you think you’re getting.
Like the pen sets. You acknowledge they are drawing pens but then keep referencing how slowly you go through pens journaling. Artists go through these pens very quickly. These pens are meant for things like stippling and crosshatching, where ink takes up most of the page. The more important thing is that this is TEMU, so they are likely NOT real fine liners but a knock off product. I wouldn’t be surprised if some were dead and dried up on arrival. You’d probably get one drawing project out of them. And who knows what the feel and quality of the ink is like.
For a lot of these things, the real deinfluencing is to point out that no matter how cheap it is, it’s money down the drain if it shows up and doesn’t work. Or it works so poorly you have to go out and get the product at the normal price.

i have the cherry blossom coaster myself and i’ve had it for years. granted i bought mine off amazon. the coasters are really pretty, so easy to clean (literally just use soap & water!), and go perfectly with my room because it’s pink and full of flowers! the only thing i will say though is it’s not the best coaster for long term. having a drink on it for a long time can cause it to have a big puddle on the coaster and leak onto the table

I'm an artist an a journaler. Though I love my gel and disposable pens, I'm currently diving headfirst into the world of fountain pens. It's a community known for collection, but the it's also very much of a built to last mindset. Archival inks and sturdy, well-crafted pens meant to last for years if not indefinitely. I wouldn't dream of buying any kind of FP or ink from Temu. However, I did fall into the stationery trap. It's not worth it. The washi tape is flimsy with barely-there adhesive. The ephemera are often low-quality dupes of nicer products. Nothing is archival. The only issue is that a lot of non-Temu stationery 'boutiques' source from the same or similar suppliers. I managed to work my way out of the trap by taking inventory of what I already have and being diligent about what I want to buy vs. what I already have. I've saved myself at least a hundred bucks in the last few months by just being mindful of my abundance.

Heavy on the cherry blossom cup mat. I thought it’d be hard plastic and bought it because I knew that I’d want to use it when I move out. I do love those cherry blossom flowers since I have one outside, have forever but it’s already getting gunky and dirt sticks to it.
I hope I’m able to find a glass version of it later down the line, I’d definitely use that and I’d know it’d be used for much longer.

I have autism and a big special interest of mine is stationary. I write lots and im also an artist, i once burned through a regular writing pen in a week.i dont use thicker nib ball points because it makes the ink patchy and i despise the texture of writing with them.i prefer the needle nibs. As for inking pens for art, i prefer Microns because they are made with archival ink, which basically makes your work last long, and it doesn't fade from exposure to light. I keep many pens on stock, i have an extensive collection that i swap through and use whenever I do write. Lately, I've gotten a lot into fountain pens and are using dip pens as you can choose the specific ink you want and swap te nib from the cartridges, or with dip pens you can just well dip it.
I should note that i haven't been collecting because of social media, but ever since i was a child, I've been obsessed with stationary and quite picky with my writing instruments, too. I still have the zebra unbreakable mechanical pencil from middle school and it works like a charm.
Edit: when I'd write essays weekly I use to burn through a pen in about 3 weeks, but I can't tell much because the pens I use for essays are typically identical but when I in a hurry I just use a different pen that has a different body, but the same writing feel.

Never thought of buying any of these except the washi. I love Washi. Do I have too much? Of Course. But I also can say I have the fitting washi for basically all of my 100 + fountain pen inks and I just love "fattening up" my journals and planners with it. So yeah - while I see your point of "where the heck do I store this?" that's pretty much my only concern. LOL. So glad I'm not even remotely tempted by any of the others.

I bought a similar cosmetic organiser. I don't really have that much make up but whatever I have is in various pouches and I can never find everything. Tall section will house the brushes. I assume everything will take up 2 compartments and the 3rd one will be home to my pins, hair ties etc. that I currently just throw on my desk and end up losing because I don't have any system for them. I thought about buying it for about a week before I ordered it (not from Temu though) because I feel like it will actually be useful for me.

The amount of stupid people in the comments saying “I use xxx all the time!!” is just alarming. This video is clearly for people who buy 10 journals and write something in them once a year for example. If you journal regularly and it brings you joy you should absolutely buy and use them as you want.

  • @nebulonicc

i do journalling and i have a few penpals that i trade stationery with. The section about washi tapes is definitely true. I've seen how obsessed people get with collecting this stuff and then never use them. I will only ever buy stationery if it 100% matches my aesthetic and i know I'm going to use it. Most of the time stuff i use for collages or bullet journaling was either gifted to me by penpals, or i collected from packaging, or otherwise found (cafes have a lot of paper ephemera surprisingly), or took from other people who were going to discard it. My mother even had a whole collection of scrapbooking supplies (she made maybe 5 pages total lol) that i took from and i use that as opposed to going out to buy new & cheaply manufactured supplies. I don't even buy new journals unless i'm less than 30 pages away from finishing my last one. I definitely have a paper ephemera hoarding problem but they all have sentimental value since they all hold reminders of memories of when i collected them.
if you really want stationery, find people online to trade with. you can make your own stationery with a color printer, scissors, and some tape, so you dont even really have to buy anything. and if you get something you know you wont use, you can pass it on to the next person. its a lot better for the environment, your wallet, AND you get to make friends. :)

I don't agree with the pen thing. As a student and artist I tend to finish multiple pens in a year, both jell pens and the kind you showed in a video. It's true that most of the people don't need 12 pens with different thicknesses, but there are people like comic book/manga artists who might just prefer to work with that variety.

I finish my pens. But I also journal almost every single day and use them for work as a designer (sketching and taking notes). And because I journal and use a planner I actually went through my washi tapes fairly quickly. I think it took about 2 or 3 months. That said, after going through them I bought a bunch more but then fell out of using the washi tape so I have one small container full of the skinny washi tapes. Such is life 🤷🏽‍♀️

Washi tapes are just a tip of an iceberg, and that's coming from me, the owner of a planner. I remember using Etsy, aliba etc as a blackhole for my wallet. Some of the stuff I still use today. However some of that, like washi paper or cute stickers I recently gave away. The worst thing for me is that I wanted them so badly just a few years ago. And then I used them a couple of times until tossing them into the junk drawer.

I would never buy pens on temu, buy I do buy my prefered pen in 12-packs, I also buy just ink refills when I'm not short on pens. But I work with kids and they frequently ask to have one of my pens because they are so nice ( I use the sharpie s-gel 0.7mm, if anyone cares), sometimes metal body, although I never intentionally give those away sometimes someone takes one. I do give kids that ask a plastic one, but I try to emphasize that its a gift and because they asked not just something they can take.

I'd gotten it off of Amazon, I believe, and was under the impression (somehow) that it'd be resin. Needless to say it's not worth the money. The craziest part is that it's not even THAT good of a coaster! Mine leaks when the drink has too much condensation. So frustrating. I kind of disagree regarding the "aesthetic" storage boxes. They can be very useful as they give you 1) a much better overview of your collection than just stuffing everything into a box or drawer, 2) a place to put things after use instead of leaving them all across the house, and 3) a regular visual reminder to use what you own. Maybe this is my ADHD specific experience though 😂 Also lots of ppl DO need water bottles inside - not this shitty Temu one though, I agree.
