Glenn Whorf’s bass playing here underlines his reputation as being one of the best in the business. Even Mark K. is delighted by the solo/duo, eliciting a smile of admiration for his longtime band mate!
Since dire straits ended his music has got better and better you can clearly see his folk roots coming through, one of if not the best story tellers ,you add his guitar playing and you have perfection.
What a pleasure to watch Mark playing on acoustic guitar! Only his hands may produce those magic sounds which can be compared only with the hands of Michelangelo working on his Davide... and my sincere compliments of all his band members.. thank you all!
1979..was also the end of high school to me, Mr. Howe..and I guess our generation was very lucky getting introduced with DS band and an exceptional musician like MK. I think that most of people believe that he's an "alien" guitar player, whilst in my opinion Sir Knopfler is a multi-talented artist, a genius by all means, & his guitar playing & technique (which to me, is absolutely the best for the past and it will remain unique for next 1999 years) is his last and most unimportant feature... ☺
I don't know your age, but I've followed MK since Sultan's of Swing my senior year in high school1979 (that would make me closing in on 52, folks). I don't know if it's an age thing, but his music has resonated with my soul since day one. The guy makes life observations, combined with just the right guitar intonations and musical arrangements. The younger set wants to hip hop & dance, in my mind. No room for reflection/introspection in this fast pace wireless e-world....SLOW DOWN & enjoy!
Even though he spent mos of his artistic days in England, that does not necessarily erase the fact that he was born in Glasgow...from Hungarian father and English mother.. As for the second part of your comment, I agree with you 1000 %, he is and for sure will remain in the same row with classic geniuses of humanity, a live legend and many people will be "Knopfler-ized" ..☺ !
Hi grande old dad :) You are the best Mark K. His music is amazing and harmonized with all kind of instruments, so technically is an orchestra playing a master piece. 👏!!!
I saw them perform for the 1st time, this song Live in Paris Le Zenith in June 2015 and I can assure you that it is as brilliant or maybe even more than on this terrific video !! thanks Mr Mark Knopfler and your Band for making the best Music on this Earth!! Also thanks to Farco for posting this vid!!
Perfect arrangement of all. Mark knopfler is out of the spfere of linear guitarist. His deminuendo, and he plays even if he not play, and you hear this, erevything is so important, brilliant, so easy, and so much layers. so under skin, but intelectual fair, he is in the manire of best cowboy.
+Nino Balac Ok, are you Ted Kennedy on a bender, or is it just me? Mark Knopfler is out of this "spfere"? His "deminuedo"? And lastly, "He is the "manire of best cowboy""? Did you mean "manure"? Speak and spell soberly, please.
Probably my all time favorite album is Dire Straits self-titled debut album in 1978. Not a dog song on it, in my mind, and superb guitar playing. If you get his solo stuff, just don't expect to be rocking a lot. He's mellowed out, and much more restrained (with exceptions) in his guitar playing, but he's great with story telling & words. Many songs will leave you longing for the more Dire Straits-type solos, but his music tends to grow on me no matter - but remember, I'm almost 52, not 15!
Isn't that the truth! BTW, one person has lost their marbles! Mark exudes class. Notice how he doesn't draw attention to himself - he looks at his band mates almost with an air of admiration, as if to say "damn, you guys are good!"
I am 15 and I Love Dire Straits(Even If It's Just From "Money For Nothing"And Several Other Single Songs) And I Plan On Buying And Listening To Several Of They're Albums Soon(Specifically Dire Straits,Making Movies, And Brothers In Arms.) ,And While I Haven't Paid Much Attention To His Solo Career I Have Heard Good Things About It.And Hey It Dosen't Hurt To Give It A Shot,Right?
just because he was born in Scotland does not necessarily mean that he is an actual Scotsman. Even tough he was born in Scotland, he lived and made music in England for the vast majority of his days. Whatever, Knopfler is a genius, no matter where he comes from. And of course - Scotland is great :)
Roll out here mister If you need a lttle rest Lay me down in marbletown A bone yard is the best There was a bad bull on the railroad Tried to put me off his train Lay me down in marbletown 'Til the coast is clear again I can hear them a- hollerin' 'We got a man down here We got a man down' I'm gonna flip me a cannonball That won't stop for anyone Lay me down in marbletown Wait 'til morning comes I'm gonna roll out here in the tombstones Wait here on my train Lay me down in marbletown I hope that it don't rain And I can still hear them hollerin ''We got a man down here We got a man down' Roll out here mister If you need a little rest Lay me down in marbletown A bone yard is the best
I'm not sure why Mark Knopfler's post Dire Straits career isn't more acclaimed, I saw him perform this song a few weeks ago and it completely changed my mind about him
Absolutely. Incredible music, and I kinda hate to say but I think better than Dire Straits as a whole. Nothing will ever replace Sultans, but Mark's phenomenal ability to keep writing excellent songs is remarkable.
Welcome aboard. Perhaps you are not aware that Mark's 2005 Shangri-La World Tour (for just one example) played over 100 dates and virtually sold out immediately in such places as: Germany, Australia, Italy, France, Spain, Denmark, India, New Zeland, Poland, Russia, Sweden, South Africa, United Arab Emirates, Switzerland, Estonia, Finland and Hungary. Not to mention all Mark's old stomping grounds.
+Diego Bernal Coincido plenamente, ese talento y su dedicacion lo llevaron solo donde van los Grandes, es zurdo y toca con guitarra para diestros, otra perlita.

Danny Cummings, was the percussionist in the On every street tour in the mid 90's later on became his drummer. Check out the peformence of 'Speedway at Nazareth' on the tour he did with Emmy lou Harris. Its even better that the one on this evening ( my opinion) but thers no such thing as a bad performance with MK
He's 72 years old now and still going strong God Bless him and keep him safe and sound. He is Legend!
this is a prime example of mark recognizing other people's talent and giving them the spotlight instead of himself
Glenn Whorf’s bass playing here underlines his reputation as being one of the best in the business. Even Mark K. is delighted by the solo/duo, eliciting a smile of admiration for his longtime band mate!
He is the best ever!! I love him and thats an understatement, I'm sure many will agree.
This is the Pinnacle of Mark Knopfler and his band!
Sur la scène,le Grand Mark nous manque!!!!!!!!

The "beyond perfection" harmony of sounds which takes you nowhere but to the skies of Scotland...
I love this live arrangement. Different than the studio version. Love it! These boys can jam. Can't get enough!
"Got Lucky" enough to see Mark Knofler on this tour. This song was definitely one of the highlights of the concert.

Heard this song at a concert in Berlin....ABSOLUTE STUNNING!!!
Just wow! There's nothing else that can be said for this particular grouping of musicians.
Mark est le meilleur guitariste du monde actuellement avec Dan ar bras
Isn't that the truth! BTW, one person has lost their marbles! Mark exudes class. Notice how he doesn't draw attention to himself - he looks at his band mates almost with an air of admiration, as if to say "damn, you guys are good!"

8:10 reminds me of Jethro Tull a little
what's the problem with the drummer at 1:00 and later?
He's playing Brushes for a soft, subtle sound that doesn't overwhelm the others
