I think that was the point. The author knew by this point that he had a very enthusiastic fan club. They aren't stupid. The theories were going wild and Reiner and Bertholdt were pretty much outed immediately after Annie was. So he went for choosing the delivery of that twist in the most absurd way possible, and it worked perfectly.

This is literally the saying "if you want to hide a tree, hide it in a forest". It was in plain sight the whole time, and that's what makes this brilliant. People usually assume that a huge plot twist must be preceded by a huge build up and be presented in a big, flashy way. However, dropping the truth in the most casual way possible catches anyone off guard, which makes the reveal even more special. And then, when you rewatch it from the start knowing this truth, you see how many clues were dropped on the way up to this. The rewatch value of this show is unmatched, second to none. Absolutely incredible writing, truly a modern masterpiece. Love your reactions!!
An obvious clue on the previous episode right when Ymir transformed and then climbs up the other again you can se bertoldt holding out his hand in front of his mouth to bite himself
It was built up with visual and sound cues. The grey clouds, side eyes, and wind were letting us know something was about to happen. We just had no idea from where or when. Beautifully done

I can't believe I haven't picked up on the blatant RED FLAGS haha. I was so glued to the screen and was hanging on the edge of every word and sound that I ignored the colour completely. Too focused on thinking that the wind gradually picking up and snapping the flag off its pole represented Reiner's breaking point and the scene's imminent climax. And just like that, I love this show even more.
I got completely blindsided by this. The thought they might be Titan Shifters never crossed my mind, not even once. I don’t know if that speaks more to the quality of the writing or my obliviousness as a viewer.
If you had been looking for it, you'd have spotted the clues. In hindsight, given that Annie was who she was, you'd think this would have been easier to see coming. But I was also blindsided. Especially looking back at episode 1, seeing the Armored Titan with *exactly Reiner's hair*....

From the moment the first AoT video was posted I have been excitedly waiting for you two to get to this one! Having seen all of the anime, and read all of the manga, this is, by far, my favorite moment in the entire series. Between the animation, pacing, dialogue, and music (my god, that music) this reveal is so incredible. And your reactions certainly did not disappoint! I appreciate how this episode subverts your expectations. At this point there are clues that you won't be surprised by Reiner and Berholt being bad guys. So instead they surprise you by having Reiner blurt it out of nowhere.
Actually in the 5th episode it foreshadowed that bertholdt is a Titan. when ymir climbed the tower to rescue them, Bertholdt about to bite his hand the moment he saw ymir's Titan form.

Honestly the biggest achievement of this series is not that it has fucked up "big reveals" every now and then, but that the more you learn about the story, the more they make sense. We have seen plenty of long running series doing the "ass pull" once in a blue moon, but here every time they add new details you can see that the vague foreshadowing was there from the beginning.
Totally. The best way to enjoy AoT is to watch it first without any knowledge, then watching it again from the very beginning to catch ALL the little foreshadowing. There's literally sooo many since the beginning of season 1

16:29 my tears come every time. Armin’s scream to Eren, then we see the last moment Eren sees his friends. After this moment, they’re enemies. The MUSIC. It’s just utterly heartbreaking. So damn good.
Also the timing. Just imagine thinking about Ymir being another titan, the Beast titan who can talk and how did the titans got behind the walls without destroying the wall then you have this big reveal all of a sudden.
Reiner revealing it obvious an insane plot twist, but three things they did made this huge plot twist into the GOAT anime reveal: 6:37 - when Bertholdt grabs Reiner and asks him not *what* he's doing, but *why*. Reiner isn't joking, and they also didn't plan it ahead of time. 14:41 - when the music starts after the silence the first few seconds makes you understand that something is about to happen, you just don't have any idea what it is. 15:59 - when Reiner sees Mikasa over Eren's shoulder, it snaps you out of your thoughts of why Reiner is doing this. Mikasa here reminds us that they aren't just revealing they need Eren, they're literally their biggest enemy. And the scouts will fight them no matter the history.

Well it's been over one year, but i really can't stop rewatching this reaction out of your guys xD The flagpole "snapping" does actually carry a symbolic meaning: It's Reiner. He's completely snapped and fucking lost it in this scene, but it's not quite obvious until you figure out his condition in the next few episodes!
This is one of the best reaction I have ever seen. I really like how shock you both were and I think almost all people who have watched this episode did not unterstand at first glance what Reiner was talking about. I remenber that I tought that the subtitles was not correct or something went wrong. But then I realized this is actually true. What a twist! And you are right, they said that so casually! No big effect, no warning, just like this in one sentence almost in the background while Hanji was also talking. This will give a new dynamic to this show and show us all the layer and the dimensions of this masterpiece. Even if you had a clue about Reiner, your reaction was truly amazing but don"t worry, you will not be able to foresee everything that will happen From now, if you look at some scenes of the 1st season, you will understand more and more things waiting for all the pieces to gather in order to riddle out all the secrets of this show. And this is specificly why I like this show and his writing and the storyline so much, it because it has so many layers and is so deep. After the end of the season 2, you could have a new look on the 2 previous season and notice some small clues. After the end of the season 3, you could then again rewatch the season 1, 2 and 3 and discover new things! And this is truly amazing to think that so many things were hidding in some very casual scene or dialogue which are, in reality, very important information at the end! I can't wait to see the end of this season with you and your journey within the season 3 Trust me, the best is ahead :) and this is the best part for you

I can't believe I haven't picked up on the blatant RED FLAGS haha. I was so glued to the screen and was hanging on the edge of every word and sound that I ignored the colour completely. Too focused on thinking that the wind gradually picking up and snapping the flag off its pole represented Reiner's breaking point and the scene's imminent climax. And just like that, I love this show even more.

If you had been looking for it, you'd have spotted the clues. In hindsight, given that Annie was who she was, you'd think this would have been easier to see coming. But I was also blindsided.
Especially looking back at episode 1, seeing the Armored Titan with *exactly Reiner's hair*....
And in 2x4ish or whenever Ymir tells them to grab on as the tower's about to come down, Bert is poised to take some action too

Actually in the 5th episode it foreshadowed that bertholdt is a Titan. when ymir climbed the tower to rescue them, Bertholdt about to bite his hand the moment he saw ymir's Titan form.

Honestly the biggest achievement of this series is not that it has fucked up "big reveals" every now and then, but that the more you learn about the story, the more they make sense.
We have seen plenty of long running series doing the "ass pull" once in a blue moon, but here every time they add new details you can see that the vague foreshadowing was there from the beginning.
Totally. The best way to enjoy AoT is to watch it first without any knowledge, then watching it again from the very beginning to catch ALL the little foreshadowing. There's literally sooo many since the beginning of season 1

Reiner revealing it obvious an insane plot twist, but three things they did made this huge plot twist into the GOAT anime reveal:
6:37 - when Bertholdt grabs Reiner and asks him not *what* he's doing, but *why*. Reiner isn't joking, and they also didn't plan it ahead of time.
14:41 - when the music starts after the silence the first few seconds makes you understand that something is about to happen, you just don't have any idea what it is.
15:59 - when Reiner sees Mikasa over Eren's shoulder, it snaps you out of your thoughts of why Reiner is doing this. Mikasa here reminds us that they aren't just revealing they need Eren, they're literally their biggest enemy. And the scouts will fight them no matter the history.

I really like how shock you both were and I think almost all people who have watched this episode did not unterstand at first glance what Reiner was talking about. I remenber that I tought that the subtitles was not correct or something went wrong. But then I realized this is actually true. What a twist! And you are right, they said that so casually! No big effect, no warning, just like this in one sentence almost in the background while Hanji was also talking. This will give a new dynamic to this show and show us all the layer and the dimensions of this masterpiece. Even if you had a clue about Reiner, your reaction was truly amazing but don"t worry, you will not be able to foresee everything that will happen
From now, if you look at some scenes of the 1st season, you will understand more and more things waiting for all the pieces to gather in order to riddle out all the secrets of this show. And this is specificly why I like this show and his writing and the storyline so much, it because it has so many layers and is so deep. After the end of the season 2, you could have a new look on the 2 previous season and notice some small clues. After the end of the season 3, you could then again rewatch the season 1, 2 and 3 and discover new things! And this is truly amazing to think that so many things were hidding in some very casual scene or dialogue which are, in reality, very important information at the end!
