    Billy, the void in the wall near the door may have originally been a porter’s nook or booth. In the age in which this convent was first built, it was common to designate one, usually older, nun as porter. A respected position, the porter held all the keys and was responsible for all comings and goings. Workmen-men-would have come to the premises for repair work, for the renovations and redos you’re finding, for heavy lifting, delivery of food and the carting away of all waste material. It was considered proper for one responsible nun to know at all times who was coming in, let them in, lock the door, quickly escort them to their destination, and return to her post. Actually, this was not unlike how the aristocracy and merchant class alike operated: women and girls did not answer the door. It was not considered safe. Home invasions are not a modern invention. As the centuries moved on, changes were made, porters less needed. But some big convents and monasteries still had them in the first half of the 20th century. Crack on!

    The void would make a wonderful place for coats, hats and such. Loving the floor.

      And I think there have been doors found around in the attic or basement or outbuildings that might fit, or might even have been original. If not a coat closet, certainly a utility closet would be another practical use.

      I was just going to suggest the same thing. Maybe even put a chest style bench for seating/shoe changing, plus you could incase a time capsule inside of that. I was picturing like a mud room type alcove like we have in some homes in the states.

      That floor is just marvelous, I wouldn't dig it up, might not look as beautiful after, which would be a shame. Besides preserving old workmanship when it's still solid and safe is as important as preserving the materials 😊 ❤

    I still vote for creating a breezeway 🤚😁! Then you can get any machine in and out of the gardens....no need for expensive doors, great flow between the gardens and archetictually stunning...⛲🏰⛩️
    🧐👍

    • @barryanderson5505
      @barryanderson5505 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I’d think about creating a “cobbled narrow street scene” with flowers by each inside door giving the impression the doors lead to private homes. And no need for doors on each end, leave it open. Fantastic space!

    • @familydutton6568
      @familydutton6568 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@barryanderson5505 Yes! That would be fantastic!

    • @familydutton6568
      @familydutton6568 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@janetpendlebury6808 a breezeway would be way less expensive... and they have already received permission. I'm only offering a suggestion. The hallway actually looks like it used to be a breezeway. Creating an entrance through the wall would require tons of work and 💰 money not to mention ruining the flow of that beautiful wall.

    As others have said, I too like the idea of a closet for coats, hats and wellies etc. Especially if the garden is going to be open the locals to help with gardening as well as other visitors. Would be nice to have it wood panelled with antique coat hangers and racks with downlighting.

    Encore du bon boulot Billy et Matisse !!! 👍👍👍 Pour la cavité dans le mur je pense plus à une porte, si ça avait été un placard souvent le fond d'un placard en France était muré de briques pour que l’intérieur du placard "respire" et la nous avons des parpaings !? A moins qu'ils n'aient pas conservé le mur en brique qui aurait été en mauvais état mais ça me paraitrait un peu bizarre puisque étant à l'intérieur de la cuisine il devait être impeccable (pas exposé aux intempéries). Alors sans doute une porte et peut être qu'il y en a aussi une autre en face sur l'autre mur qui donne dans le réfectoire comme l'architecture typique d'une longère ou toutes les portes qui desservaient toutes les pièces en enfilades n'étaient que d'un seul coté... Ce ne sont que des suppositions. Comme nous sommes dans un couvent si il y avait eu des placards dans l'entrée et vue la grandeur de cette entrée les placards auraient été en saillie sur les murs de plus ce sont des murs porteurs. Bon courage pour le nettoyage Billy j'espère que ça ne sera pas trop difficile mais le rendu avec les joints des pierres en granit refaits sera SUPERBE ! 🤩🤩🤩

    That void would look amazing finished with a beautiful coat cupboard or a fancy mirror and table with a marble top. Maybe a section of the bank furniture to sorta marry the furniture throughout. Maybe for a sign in book. Adds character to the room instead of just a rectangular space. Exciting find!

    The void was perhaps an old doorway that gave way to a corridor on the courtside of the kitchen wing, all along the wall towards the door to the left of the fireplace in the kitchen. That is why the fireplace in the kitchen is not in the middle of the backwall. If you imagine a corridor on the left side the chimney would be exactly in the middle of backwall. The corridor was perhaps separated from the kitchen with a wooden screen with a view glass panel or internal windows.

    Would you consider polishing the stone? Two things about it:
    1. It will make the floor even so that walking on a smooth surface will be safe.
    2. You could consider a layer of clear resin on it to raise the level and protect the beauty of the floor. Just a couple of thoughts.

    The alcove would be a good place to display some of the artifacts you have come across in your renovation. A narrative to explain the history of the building.

    “The Void” is a bonus!!!
    A business can never have to much storage space!!! You can work out the details for shelving, etc as your business needs develop

    If it's as hot there as it is here in Mississippi, that was pretty hard work, even without the heavy lifting.

    Welcome Matisse to the team! hope we'll get some gorgeous painting from you (easy joke, sorry..) Guys, I follow your vids since some time, because I admire your hard work and your respect for the ancient convent. Let's crack it on! Also, I live next to a convent that had undergo a renovation since the past year, aprox. The council turned it into a museum and a convention centre, or sth like that. Greetings from Spain!

    You might want to put in a glass case with glass doors and shelves and place artifacts you have found from the convent on display in the space you found behind the entry hallway.

    Matisse is a keeper. He’s definitely not afraid to get his hands dirty.

    The void could have been for maintenance access at one point. My friend found a narrow doorway leading to a narrow passage like that. Turns out that was what it was for. I think there was old electrical cables etc in it.

    efficiently done as usual, billy! if you get a landline phone, you could do a little phone nook in the space behind the wall. do people even get landlines any more?

      I have seen old pay phone booths, the kind with la little seat in one corner and a bi-fold door, in a train station now used as little pods for people to use whilst talking on their cell phones so no one else has to hear half a conversation.
      So he could make a nook for a person to sit in whilst asking on their cell phone and maybe even have some plugs available. Oh and maybe an antique phone on the wall. Either the kind with a rotary dial or the even older ones where the operator had to connect your call. But wire it so when some one picks up the receiver it only calls a matching phone at his & Gwen’s Château.

    What a great help Matisse was.
    Does he paint? 😀
    His muscles aren’t painted on that’s for sure! I hope and would be very happy to see more of him in your vlogs! 😀😀😀
    Best wishes from Neil in Australia 🇦🇺

    Perhaps that new discovery could be a convenient space for jackets and shoes when coming inside.
